Okay to good read. While not a great book it is still a sweet, light read.

The story starts off , when the h catches her betrothed en flagrant delicto with a maid. She's heartbroken. Her horrible father won't let her back out of the engagement. She soon learns that her fiancee has a Duke who is his cousin. Surly he can help her? So she travels at night while dressed like a man. She finally pushes her way into his home.

Right away there is instant lust. The Duke is intrigued , beguiled , and willing to marry the h. His last wife recently died after shouting for his cousin (h betrothed). The Duke really wants the h and thwarting his cousin is a bonus.

Soon the two marry and spent weeks together. There some very hot/steamy sex scenes. It's great watching this couple grow to love on another.

The author created a very fast paced story. Though, I felt like the story was missing something . The MC were likable bit a little too perfect. They lacked any real dimension.

Still, it was a nice simple read! Part of me is tempted to try the next book, so that says not that bad.

Enjoyable Romance about human frailty and not being who people think you are. Annabell catches her fiancé and (kindof friend) in the barn milking not the cows (ok maybe it was the stables) she wants to break the engagement. Her father (who is a jerk all through the book) refuses. So, she secretly goes to the duke and explains the problem to him, and he sees an opportunity to even out a wrong done to him. The duke is a very nice man (I tend to like the bad boys) and a series of noncommunication and finding out about long ago secrets come to light. I thought about adding it to my Erotica category as it has a few very spicy parts. I look forward to the next book 3.5*

Very charming

I really enjoyed this story. The heroine was so adorable and I loved how she went out and found her duke instead of settling with the cheating ex. I do think the ex was sorry after he saw how wonderful their marriage was but he was still a zero! I also liked how the duke and the heroine communicated with each other, well except for that one time, and worked things out. There are a lot of sex scenes in the book so be prepared. They aren't crude or anything but they are explicit without being depraved as so many authors seem to write lately. It had a great ending and I am looking forward to reading more by this author. This one was safe except for her finding her ex in the act. And he didn't matter because her true love was the duke.

OUTSTANDING SENSUOUS HISTORICAL ROMANTIC STORY!!

I absolutely loved this couple's story. Miss Annabel Ridley daughter to Baron Ridley is 4 weeks away from her wedding. She catches her betroth Richard the Earl of Saunton having sex with one of her kitchen maids in the stables.

Annabel goes to her father and wants him to cancel the wedding but her father refuses. Annable than dresses as a lad and goes to get help from Richard's cousin Philip Markham the Duke of Halmesbury.

Philip agrees to help Annabel by offering to marry her himself.

This is a beautifully written, sensuous story of strangers falling in love. They are truly committed to building a loving marriage. The story is accurate and believable to the historical Era it is written. I also, like the fact that Annabel was a young 19 year. I really dislike Spinster stories. So, Annabel being so young was a good surprise.

This was a fast paced story with great secondary characters. I Highly Recommend You Read "The Duke Wins a Bride"

No ordinary marriage of convenience.

A new to me author and her first book, I can’t wait to see what she has coming up next.

Take one forlorn widowed duke, one high spirited, headstrong , breeches wearing heroine and watch as they get to know each other. Steamy times a head.

Both Philip and Annabel were wonderful characters to watch grow and fall in love. Annabel with her love for life despite her odious father and just desires to be loved. There are moments that brought tears to my eyes so just warned. Her housekeeper, Mrs Harris, well I want someone like that in my life too, she was a fantastic character and added that extra layer of wonder.

Philip is quite jaded in the beginning, not believing or trusting in love again due to his first wife but thanks to Annabel’s tenacity , that soon changes.

Such a delightful story that I would love to read again for the first time.

2025 52 Book Challenge - May Mini Challenge - 2) Main: Chef's Passport Plate - An Author From A Country You've Never Visited

I've never read anything from this author before, and I was expecting this to be like knockoff Bridgerton. And okay, it does feel like the first Bridgerton book, but it felt like it had more depth to it than Bridgerton did. While the characters weren't super deep, there was still an emotional connection between them, and it felt more realistic. It was quite an enjoyable read.

I received a copy of this from BookSprout and this is my freely given opinion.

I really enjoyed the Captain's Wife, the short novella that was a prequel to this story, and my only lament was that it was too short, since I loved the characters and their journeys so much. It was in that novel that we first meet Philip Markham, the Duke of Halmesbury. Captain Lewis from the novella is his friend, and the captain's wife, Lydia, seeks his help when she ran away because of her husband's stories of Philip's goodness and helpfulness as a friend. From his understanding, and help of Lydia, and the stories of philanthropy, there is a pretty strong background of Philip being a good and likeable person, so I was looking forward to reading about his story.

Anabel is the daughter of a baron near Halmesbury, betrothed to Richard, the Earl of Saunton, who is good friends with her brother. She loves him, and is looking forward to their wedding. What she does not know is that he is a terrible rake, but the blinders are torn off when she runs to greet him when he arrives at her family estate, and catches in flagrante delicto in the stables with her kitchen maid. She shows incredible kindness and presence of mind in her dismissal of her maid, and decides that she cannot marry Richard. He, however, is determined to marry her as he knows he needs to marry, and determines that Anabel is a good bride, and a woman he can tolerate living with, and her father wants the social connection to the Earl to prop up his consequence. Anabel is a means to an end for the both of them, and what she wants personally is nothing to be thought of.

To save herself, Anabel runs away, with the help of her housekeeper, Mrs. Harris, to find the Duke, who is a cousin to Saunton and someone he spoke of looking up to. She confronts him and asks for him to intercede to stop her wedding to his cousin, Richard. Philip has been widowed for 3 years and his first marriage lead to him developing quite a lack of self confidence in being loved. It also ended up tearing apart his relationship with his cousin Richard, who was his best friend. But as a Duke, he realizes that he must at some point wed again to sire a heir. When Anabel appears before him, he is quite attracted to her strength, boldness, and beauty and offers her a solution to her situation - by marrying him instead of Richard. He promises her fidelity for one thing, and after some thought, Anabel agrees.

This is a story that actually is quite steamy, as Philip as a strong love of the carnal, and is very attracted to Anabel, and she is a sensual person herself. But what really caught me was how lacking in confidence in themselves they both were, despite their outward demeanors, and how undeserving of love they both felt. It was quite heartrending how broken Philip's prior marriage had him feeling, and how lonely they both were. So I was quite taken by the stories of finding love and lifting loneliness in this story - and not just between Anabel and Philip either. Richard, despite his man-slut ways, is not the villain he appears either.

The baron, however, is a jerk, though... but even he gets warmth and consideration because Philip... and Anabel, are just good people. Good people who have a passionate, sensual love for each other, and a well deserved HEA.

Looking forward to seeing how Richard redeems himself and finds himself a Countess!

Steam level 4 (tastefully)

A surprisingly steamy Regency romance to begin a series by a new to me author. The characters are well developed and likable. Even though it is steamy, there’s plenty of story, and it’s not pornographic by any stretch of the imagination. I really enjoy the world being built by this author. The characters have depth, are funny, sympathetic and more than two dimensional. Plus the noblemen/gentry interact with the common folk in a way that doesn’t feel trite or dismissive. I am curious as to why Clinton‘s voice is so gravelly.

I will say that the "I have to keep this secret or lose it all" plot device was a little thin, but the fact that the characters are so delightful and well written, I’m willing to forgive, what felt like a reach to create some drama between our star crossed lovers.

I’ll keep reading I can’t wait to see these characters grow and get to know one another as their circle and family increases.

This started out good but it was ultimately disappointing. The angst was nice but flat-lined when the heroine felt guilty both times and apologized when she didn't need to. The Hero was kind of a wimp. It's good that he apologized, but I needed more of a grovel and for him to be more convincing. I thought they were a good match in the beginning, but after all the turmoil the heroine was put in just waiting for him really put a huge damper on what little romance there was.

Sidenote: I was very relieved that they didn't have a daughter and name her after his dead first wife. It's incredibly disturbing when romance books do that. I don't know if anyone does that in real life, but if they do, they have a much stronger stomach than me.

Annabel Ridley catches her betrothed, a childhood friend and an earl, with her maid. The wedding is in two months, but her father and betrothed refuse to end it. After a month, she's desparate and seeks help from her betrothed's cousin, a duke more powerful to help negotiate ending the wedding. Philip, the Duke of Halmesbury, wants to marry again. Annabel is exactly what he wants in a wife. A passionate marriage different from his first. It might be revenge against the cousin who betrayed him, but he can't let Annabel marry anyone else. I wasn't bored reading this one.

Good - ish

There are a number of problems with this book, however i did enjoy the story.
There is too much repetitive chest-beating angst and hysteria. For example, Annabelle is not an hysteric, yet towards the end of the book that is how she is portrayed.
The Duke is an amiable idiot.
There are many errors that a little research would have corrected. For example, the Duke does NOT live in a manse; a clergyman does.
Skipping over these irritations and errors, I enjoyed the story enough to find Book 2 in the series.
On the whole - recommended.

Annabel discovers her fiancé with another woman weeks before their wedding and tries to break off the engagement to no avail.

She leaves in search of his cousin, the Duke of Halmesb, for him to help her break the engagement with his cousin.

He has his own plans and he suggests a marriage of convenience.

The author delivers a story of the challenges of a relationship where there is a strong physical attraction but one don't know the other well enough and the feelings are not clear. Simply page-turner.

Annabel had never been out of the country. At the age of 19 she happily accepts a proposal from an earl that she believes loves her as she does him. She’s disabused of the fact when she sees him in the act of having her kitchen maid, just weeks before her wedding.

Annabel boldly turns to the earl’s cousin, the Duke of Halmesbury, whose estate is nearby for help. He convinces Annabel that marriage to him will solve both of their problems, as he’s seeking a spirited lady for a wife and will be faithful. Annabel has trust and self-esteem issues to deal with. Philip (the duke) also has issues because of his first wife’s fear of the marriage bed.

Philip and Annabel had no difficulties in their marital relations at all. Every encounter was erotic and sensual. They were steamy and very well-written. But will a partnership of convenience turn into love?

I loved that Annabel had a close relationship with Mrs Harris, her housekeeper, since her mother died. She’s strong-willed and stands up to her father. She also confronts Philip when they have issues. Philip right away was drawn to Annabel with feelings of hope and such an instant attraction like he’s never experienced. I found that so endearing in this story—unlike other books that has the male hero so wishy washy.

This is the first book in the series Inconvenient brides. I’m really looking forward to lots more by Ms Jarrett.

I received a copy of this book for my honest opinion.

A steamy read. I liked the story line. Possibly the Duke was slightly weak in not showing his feelings for so long, and he seemed naive about how to communicate with a partner , but overall I enjoyed it. I will try the rest of the series.

The Duke Wins a Bride is the first book in the Inconvenient Bride series.

This is a fantastic first book. The story begins with Annabell catching her fiancée in an indiscreet moment with a housemaid in the stables. She fires the employee and magnanimously offers to write a reference for her. She then turns on the fiancée and demands to cancel the engagement to which he insists that they will be married.

Secretly she runs off to the Duke who is a relative of her fiancée to ask for help. The Duke himself had been in mourning and has just decided to enter the marriage mart when the very interesting and enticing young woman catches his interest. He offers to help her by asking her to marry him instead. He offers to handle everything, her awful father, her fiancée, the vicar and so on. Annabell happily agrees to the marriage. What she doesn't know is that he has his own reasons for helping which will create problems going forward and makes for a very enjoyable story.

I believe these can be stand-alone books in spite of many characters which are in each of the books as well as new characters which are introduced. And for me, this is why I like to read the whole series from the beginning, instead of a book in the middle somewhere. I recently read the third book in this series as an ARC for which I wrote a review. Now I wish I could rewrite the review not because I like it more, or less, but because there is history and character development that is missing when you don't start at the beginning. I guess I need to do a better job requesting books which may be in a series, since this information isn't always on the site where I get the ARC's.

This is a wonderfully written as well as entertaining story with characters who long to be loved for who they are. I highly recommend this series.

I really adored this book. This was a fast paced read for me and such a good historical romance. Annabel and Philip are such a dynamic pairing. You cannot help but feel for both of them as the story progresses. I really enjoyed Annabel as a character. Given her family history, I am surprised at how strong she is. I also love how supportive she is of Philip.

Annabel is in love and ready to get married to Richard. She sees he arrives early one visit and runs off to surprise him. Only she got surprised in the end when she finds him with one of her kitchen staff. She is devastated and wants to call off the wedding but her father and Richard will not allow it. Out of options, she goes to Richard's cousin to get his assistance. When she gets there and explains her situation, he takes heart and then offers for her himself. After all, a duke is better than an earl.

Philip has decided it is time to remarry and start a family. He dreads going out to the marriage mart, so when he sees Annabel and how she is begging for his help to get out of marrying his cousin he comes up with a plan. His plan? A marriage of convenience. He will marry her and remain faithful, and she no longer has to marry his rake of a cousin. What he doesn't tell her, though, is one of the reasons he is so quick to offer for her. Will that secret tear their fragile bond apart?.

Annabel and Philip

After seeing her betrothed in a barn in a compromising situation with a housemaid, Annabel no longer wishes to marry Richard, an earl. Her father is not swayed to cancel the wedding so she seeks out Phillip, Richard’s cousin and a duke, after reading a flattering article about Phillip’s charitable works. Needing a bride and an heir, Phillip can’t believe his luck when this amazing woman dressed as a lad virtually drops in his lap. Intrigued with Annabel and her story, Philip offers marriage to free her from an unwanted marriage with Richard. Annabel accepts and the two have their special license, quickly thrown together wedding then marriage of convenience. Their marriage bed is physical and extremely steamy, that is when they are at their best. But they need to overcome several hurdles, secrets involving Philip’s first wife and his first wife’s relationship with his cousin, Richard, and Annabel’s difficult childhood and estrangement with her elder brother. This is the first book I have read by Nina Jarrett and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The plot was interesting and well done. It is always good to see a strong female who figures out a way to get what she wants. She’s not afraid to be herself, which awakens Phillip’s heart. All was not smooth sailing though, they had to clear up the past before embarking on a happy ever after future. The secondary characters added another level to the story, especially Mrs. Harris, the housekeeper who watched Annabel grow up and moved with her to the duke’s estate, and Clinton, Phillip’s longtime butler. All of the characters had distinct personalities adding to the overall plot and story flow. This is definitely recommended for lovers of very steamy regency stories. I will definitely read more of Jarrett’s work.

A new writer in a genre I love so much. And what a revelation this story was told.

The way Annabel is portrayed is fantastic. As a 19-year-old rural woman, she has more freedom than other young women of her class in London. When she catches her fiancé with the kitchen maid, she wants to get rid of the promise to marry him. But her fiancé and father want the wedding to go ahead. In search of a solution, she ends up with Philip Markham, Duke of Halmesbury.

A beautiful story of a marriage of convenience that involves love. Great dialogues filled with humor. But also the humor in the scenes when Philip convinces himself of his feelings for Annabel
qoute "He would still spend the evenings with her because he ... because he ... because he had a responsibility to sire an heir" and moments later he has to remind himself again of why he keeps sharing the bed with Annabel "....because ... because ... because they had a future generation of Markhams to produce, he told himself". And I thought it was hilarious that his cousin, Annabel's previous fiancée, helps him find out that it is love.

Overall a great book to read.

I liked Philip and Annabel's story. Here was a young woman determined not to settle for a man who would cheat his way through their marriage with no qualms. Despite her father callous treatment of her, not showing her any love or care, she grows into a well-adjusted, loving and kind young woman, willing to stand up for herself. Following her many attempts to try to convince Richard, her fiancé and Philip's cousin, to call off the wedding, she finally takes matters into her own hands and travels to meet Philip and seek his help. What happens is quite a fun ride with Philip marrying Annabel instead. Philip was a widower still reeling from the loss of his wife 3 years earlier and just beginning to think of entering the marriage market to find his next Duchess. Enter Annabel with perfect timing and the rest is history!

The couple take time to grow to love and appreciate each other while sorting out a few issues of their own before their HEA.

I would definitely recommend this book wholeheartedly.

Annabel and the Duke . . .

Miss Annabel Ridley eagerly ran to meet her betrothed Richard, the Earl of Saunton, and caught him in the stables with a maid, seeing for herself that he has been unfaithful. She wants to back out of her betrothal to such a blatant rake. But he needs a wife, feels he can tolerate her, and what she wants means nothing to him. So he refuses to let her go.

Annabel is not willing to settle for this and she seeks out widower Philip Markham, the Duke of Halmesbury, who may be inclined to assist her. She asks him to intercede to stop her wedding to his cousin, Richard. But as a Duke, he realizes that he too must at some point wed again to produce an heir. So he suggests that she should marry him instead of Richard. When he promises her he would be faithful to her, Annabel agrees to his proposal. Will this solve her problem? Will the two find happiness with each other?

A smoothly written, steamy romantic story, entertaining and humorous at times. Annabel takes matters into her own hands when she wants to break off her engagement to the unfaithful Richard. She asks his cousin, Phillip, for help and ends up as Phillip’s bride. Despite their hurried marriage, the two get along well, yet some cracks seem to appear in the relationship. How they deal with this is explained in this story. Likeable characters (except Richard, I really wonder how he can become more pleasant in his own story), occasionally lighthearted and occasionally more serious. Good structure and pace. The thoughts that cause the issues the main characters are struggling with seem a bit silly to me for the most part, but I tried to imagine that things were very different in the time in which the story takes place. Enjoyed the story, the first of a series of which I expect to read more.

This is the first book of the Inconvenient Brides series and also a first time read for me by this author. It was a steamy and wonderfully captivating story that captured my attention from the start and kept it all the way through. Philip is a widowed duke with a quiet and jaded personality. Annabel is the complete opposite, spirited and full of energy, exactly what Philip needs to pull him out of his forlorn mood. The story was such a delight to read and I really enjoyed following Philip and Annabel's story and watching their love blossom and grow and how Annabel help put light back into Philip's life. The characters were wonderful and well-developed and you can't help but fall in love with them. A lovely story I am happy to have the opportunity to read!

This is a charming and emotional Regency romance with some steamy scenes. When Annabel discovered her betrothed with a kitchen maid she is desperate to break free. Phillip Duke of Halmsbury is looking for a wife and they enter into a marriage of convenience that rapidly becomes much more. Misunderstandings and secrets put pressures on the couple and give the story emotion and depth as well as a little frustration with a characters who sometime struggle to talk to.each other. The story is really well written with excellent well described characters who have their share of issues and problems. Loved the story. A new author to me and one I will be reading again.

This is the first book in the Inconvenient Brides Series, a Regency Romance. I liked the prequel novellas Interview with the Duke, and Captain's Wife. I liked Annabel and Philip's story. Philip, the Duke of Halmesbury, is very handsome, caring, and supportive. Annabel is beautiful, king, and smart. They are perfect together. The supporting characters are great. The characters are interesting, and well developed. The story is beautifully written, romantic, passionate, and engaging. I liked the twists in the story. I enjoyed it. Claire Glove did an excellent job with the narration. Looking forward to listening to the next book in the series, To Redeem an Earl, Richard's story. Wow simply loved this book read it straight through no housework done today

A bold young Annabelle taking control of her own future very brave especially in those days where women were told what they should do

I enjoyed the relationship she had with her housekeeper who also ended up with her own strange love match

Phillip was a lovely Duke albeit naive but he learnt his lessons and had a kind heart

How cruel were some fathers back them loving money more than anything

It makes me think of how many times we misunderstand rather than confront and talk our lives might be more fulfilling

The steamy parts were good to phew!

Thank you a great story
