Deals with Demons #4

Luck of the Demon

Rate this book
Within a matter of days, Samael will turn to ash.
And there’s a high chance I’ll die with him.

To save both our lives, I’m calling in every favor and debt owed to me.

I’ll travel through realms.

I’ll tussle with mythical creatures.

And I’ll hand over the things I value most– even if it means playing right into Lucifer’s hands.

I never could have imagined I’d risk everything for a demon. But what Samael and I have will always be worth fighting for. Even if it means ending treaties, severing friendships, and alienating our allies.

Because Samael is mine now.

And I protect what’s mine.

♥ If you like K.F Breene, Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, Faith Hunter, Laurell K. Hamilton, Jennifer Estep, Shannon Mayer, Kim Harrison, and Dannika Dark, you’ll love this series. The Deals with Demons world includes the fae, demons, mages, werewolves, witches, and more.♥

This fourth instalment mostly focuses on Danica’s race against the clock to fin d a way to save Samael before he dies, and her with him.

This book introduced a lot of new creatures and characters, and we also got to visit new realms. I loved the change of setting and the more mystical vibe of this book; it ended up feeling like a long scavenger hunt, and it got tedious after a while. I love that there was a lot of action and that it was also a race against the clock, but at the same time, I feel like I had to time to breathe and take in what was happening.

The pace is good, and things keep happening to Danica and Kyla, but I did lose interest after a little bit. There was almost too much happening; I felt exhausted just reading about all the traveling they did in a few days or weeks.

While searching for a way to save Samael, Danica also butted heads with the Mage council. After what happened at the end of the third book, it was heavily implied that they were aware of the plan to remove Danica and send her to Lucifer, and the mages decided to try to take advantage of the fact that Samael was out of business for a while. Danica did not let them get away with it, and it was so satisfying to see her holding her own against them and getting a semblance of revenge for the way they treated her and schemed against her.

Danica has always been resourceful and driven, but it shows even more in this book. She is willing to do almost anything to save Samael and does not care about her health in the process, but I also liked that while she was desperate to save him, she still had lines she would not cross. She was vicious and violent at times, but in the end, she remained a good person with principles and a moral code. She also made a new fluffy friend along the way, and I am in love with Virtus already.

Kyla is the best sidekick. She quickly went from “intern” to “best friend”, and her unwavering support of Danica in her quest meant everything. Kyla was always there to threaten enemies, kick asses, or simply support Danica and I really think it made all the difference for Danica to see and feel that she was not alone in her mission. That at least one other person still thought that it was possible to save Samael in time.

This book also ends with a cliffhanger, so I am glad that I already have access to the fifth book. It seems like there will be an amnesia trope in the next book, though, and I hope it will not drag on for too long because I am not a huge fan of that trope.

This book felt like one big very obvious connect the dots but in a good way. I could see the pieces falling into place long before they happened. There are quite a few interesting twists along the way and a lot about possible future spin-offs were hinted at. That was actually one of the most interesting aspects of this book in particular. What I wouldn't give to take a look at the storyboard the author probably has for this universe she's fleshing out. *Cue conspiracy theory meme guy gif*

Due to extenuating circumstances, Samael was and wasn't a big part of this book. He was there and he was important but it wasn't on him to resolve anything. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that he's a bigger part of the next book because that ending really hurt.

Danica was so violent, resourceful, and kick*ss in this book! Even with so many people doubting her she moved heaven and hell to get what she wanted. She called in every favor we've seen her collect in past books. That was the moment it dawned on me that the author had this all planned out from the start down to the smallest of details.

It's astounding to think that Stacia Stark only started releasing books in 2021. The world she's built with this series is fantastic. The writing is so good. The characters are complex and painted in shades of grey that you sometimes cringe at but you know you'll be coming back for more. She deserves a big pat on the back or maybe a punch considering all the cliffhangers she's putting me through. Of course, I'm kidding! 🙃

The ending left me like....

What the holy heck did I just read?! An incredible storyline is what!!

Dani's journey to bring Samael back brings all the pieces together for a final showdown of epic proportions. We see all the players from each of the previous books come together. Stark adds new players to the team. I mean there is so much happening here, I can not imagine the time it took for Stark to put this together. It was genius.

There is not a lot of Samael in this read for obvious reasons. It never felt like a loss though. It felt like a solid escalation to the final ..... the moment Dani comes face to face with her destiny.

GAH!!! I love this and I am shredded book 5 is not available yet.

Happy reading,
DD 🥂

Words cannot describe how much I’m loving and enjoying this series.

Do yourself and read this. Just when I think everything is good this author introduces a new twists that I wasn’t expecting.

That ending was insane.
Love love all the adventure. And I really hope Lorcan is alive and Agates is a positive character.
Betrayal in this series? Yeah, you don’t see those coming.

Safe, ku and not standalone.
Absolutely recommended.

This series started off really strong but now I'm feeling like it is getting repetitive and dragged out. In every book, the peak of the plot does not hit until the 90% mark and then it ends in a cliff hanger...

I really enjoy how strong Danica is as a main character, how much she has grown, her supportive characters and her relationship with Samael. I initially felt like the plot was really coming along. There were opportunities to explore the witches and werewolves and demons as spin offs. This book where Samael is down we could have seen Danica step in as a ruler for a hot moment and see her grow there. I felt like, in this book, Danica went off on a merry chase to find something random... She was all over the place, and honestly nothing happened. Then at the end she saves Samael and bam... another cliffhanger. I wish the end had turned into all of the factions meeting and working together to defeat Lucifer. I hope this series turns around but I unfortunately feel like its just going to be dragged out into a 7+ book series when it could have ended in 4 and been a top re-readable series.

Boy, that cliffhanger fucking sucks. I mean, the last one did too. But this one seriously pissed me off.

Separately, it felt like this book was seeding some interesting spin-off series: Nathaniel and Evie, Kyla and Finvarre, Vas and Meredith, maybe something with the mer-folk. I like the secondary cast in this series a lot, and would definitely be down for all of that.

My review needs a disclaimer up front. This installment is just as well written as the previous ones. The lower rating is strictly personal and probably won’t affect anyone else’s reading experience.

Okay… so why? Because one of the few tropes I really can’t handle is when one of the main characters is dying. And I especially hate it when the entire book revolves around that basis (as opposed to finding a solution, getting better and getting on with things at some earlier point in the story). It immediately and continually puts a huge dark cloud over the entire reading experience, even when the story, itself, is full of action and excitement (trying to find a cure). Of course, I know in this book everything will be okay (because said character is in the following book in the series - I peeked) BUT… no sooner had the problems resolved than the other beloved main character is thrown into it. The end.

Yep a horrible cliffhanger on top of my depressing sandwich.

Did I mention that the book is still awesome and amazing IF one doesn’t have my hang ups? Yes? Well, there ya have it.

No ha sido ni de lejos el mejor de la saga. Encima no debería haberlo leído en el momento que lo hice. Creo que lo mejor sería que hiciese una relectura del mismo.

There are no words that could describe this book adequately. The hoops and hurdles that Danica went through to save Samael are an inspiration. She never gave up and wouldn't let anything or anyone stand in her way. The bond they both shared was and is their lifeline.
An unexpected twist had me seething in my seat. The next book cannot come out fast enough!

Great writing Stasia. I continue to look forward to the next installment!

I love this series!

Danica has developed so much throughout the series and I love watching her on her quest to save Samael.

And I adore Samael and Danica!

Not happy with that ending, though...

This book was a sprint race from start to finish.
I really liked all the interactions between Danica and various supernatural factions but I wished we had more time (not possible considering what was going on and the raving against the clock situation) to enjoy them.
That ending also...left me with my jaw on the floor.

3.25⭐️

Book #3 had finally made a lot of headway with the story of this series. It finally felt like things were moving in a solid direction with the relationship between Danica and Samael. And then of course a cliffhanger ending that leaves one of the characters incapacitated for the whole next book. It’s a tired trope in fantasy books. But I was still keen on reading book #4 and where the story would go.

Book #4 was very fast paced and action packed. It was a very fast read. But it was frustrating. Everything felt like it was make a deal, move on to next challenge, make another deal, find another person, find another artifact, make another deal. So much was happening all in an effort to locate a spell and it just became draining that the whole book led to that. To then end in ANOTHER cliffhanger that then puts the other main character in a shit situation for the next book. And it involves some kind of memory loss which is a trope I FUCKING HATE!

So yeah I’m frustrated by this book. But the worst part is it wasn’t a bad read, just frustrating dragging of the storyline in this book. Two books left in the series and they are short reads so I will finish but it feels like this book was crammed with too much, but also should’ve been half the book.

I was Alice, and I’d fallen down the wrong damn rabbit hole.

Luck of the Demon was an emotional book about sacrifice and love. Debts were called in and traded. Prophecies graced the pages. We saw lots of familiar faces from the previous books. Friendships formed I didn't see coming. And there were new alliances made that had me on the edge of my seat having to know what happened next! This series continues to keep me entertained, obsessed and needing to know what happens next!
Lucifer had known exactly where to strike. I was the chink in Samael’s armor. His blind spot. The weakness Lucifer had been searching for.

Luck of the Demon hurt. I had so much anxiety for Samael. What he was going through was horrific. And his fate fell completely on Danica's shoulders. Her tasks were unfathomable. The deals she made just seemed to dig her even deeper into what had to be done. I was so nervous for her, yet love drove her to never give up! And play some very dangerous games with those in great power. Yet Danica also sacrificed more than we could ever imagine. I cried for her. For what she had to lose. And then her emotional moment with Scylla, I just couldn't. I was a blubbering mess. This book definitely held me in the palm of its hands!
Whatever it took. I’d do whatever it took to make sure he lived.

With time running out, the intensity of this book felt through the roof. And with enemies at every turn, I just wanted them to have some type of break. One that didn't exist. Danica traveled through realms, was given tasks that seemed impossible and met creatures she didn't even know existed. All the while Samael's life was on the line. So I was beyond terrified and sometimes didn't want to turn the page because I needed those I loved to be okay. And that definitely wasn't guaranteed. But there was an addition of a new character who I loved! We also got some answers to questions back from that first book! But there was also tears, I had so many tears! Even happy ones. Then those last few pages left us again on another epic cliffhanger and I started that next book asap!

PS When she said MY people! OMG, I got chills!

Not a fan.
This book was completely unnecessary. The whole book was there to set up the and as a way for the author to retell legends. There was SO MUCH explanatory dialogue.
This book bummed me out. I was really looking forward to it but it was obvious the author didn't know what to do, so they just rewrote the odyssey and brought in a bunch of references to Beowulf and Orlando Immorato.

Also, homegirl really needs a Tums or some Pepto with the amount of bile crawling up her throat.

This was the weakest of the series

Whew, I really had a hard time getting through this one. I don’t know if it’s because it was so dark, or hopeless, or maybe because it felt like a filler between stories. I kept reading a few pages, then going away to read a more interesting book for a week or so, then coming back and trying again.

Hopefully the next book will be back to the level of the first 3 books.

Even I love this series and pay a lot attention to my reviews on the books in it, this one would not be very positive.
Ok, the writing style was very good, as in the others. And what I really do appreciate is the fact that Danica was pictured as strong heroin, again. She did not need men to cover her back. She did not need demons to do her job. And while everyone gave up, she still had her hope and she was determined to do whatever it takes to save the love of her life.
Also fun, irony and sarcasm were parts of this book. Given the circumstancies, they did not take as much space as in previous three books of the series, but I can understand that. Griffin made up for everything else.
Oh and - I knew it!!! (Evie and Nathaniel.)

But...

Through about 140 pages of this book, there was only one idea in my mind - was this book really neccessary. I can´t say it was not interesting, but it was not a book I wanted to read after the ending of third book. I wanted to story went forward and I wanted to met Lucifer sooner. I think it would be interesting to see Danica in the Underworld instead of visiting realms, making bargains and trying to save Samael. Of course I did not (and do not) want Samael death. What I am saying is that third book could end differenty and fourth book could be the last in this series. Yaeh, I know - Stacia Stark had a lot in her mind and she wanted to put everything into her books.

Through almost all the book I felt like I was reading parts of fairytales, myths and legends instead of really going somewhere. Luck of Demon is like an encyclopedy of mythical creatures.

Several "thank you" to the Fae hit my eyes hard. I know this is fantasy and all the myths about Fae are .... well, myths. But this was ridiculous. You do not say "thank you" to the Fae, because it would not end well for you. Debt? Sure. Bargains? Yes, of course - and be very carefull how you form the bargain, because Fae could easily step out of it. But "thank you"? No way :)))))))

What else hit my eyes hard? It track my mind from first pages of the first book in this series, but here in Luck of the Demon it screamed on my. Stacia Stark is probably very big fan of Sarah J Maas and her series. Danica, Maeve, Lorcan - those are just few names of characters which are in this series and which played their role in SJM´s books. And the way Samael was saved? Do you remember the way Feyre was saved? And later Rhysand? When Hannan stepped into the scene, I literally rolled my eyes. It was like I was back in time reading ACOTAR in that part where Feyre begged Tamlin for his drop to save Rhysand.

Of course I am about to start fifth book of the series. I want to see how it will ends and I want to see their happily ever after. :)

This book was better than the previous two. There weren’t as many inconsistencies, so the story felt more real.

I liked:

*the way she kept Samael in the story even though he was out of commission. That was well balanced.

*I’m looking forward to future stories Shell write with this world. I really want a book for Evie and Nathaniel. Also Kyla and …the Unseelie king? That’s my guess. That would be a fun story to read.

*Danica really had to dig deep and find her inner strength this story. She’s always been a strong, stubborn woman, but we especially see it in this book. I really like her character.

*I like how she wrote the griffin’s character. I hope his wing gets healed and Danica can ride him around instead of needing a demon to fly. That would be amazing. Although, based on the next book cover, I’m guessing she’ll find her own way to fly. That would be cool too.

*lots of action. The story had a good pace and kept me up reading until midnight.

Didn’t like:

*Danica FINALLY gets what is required and instead of rushing back to the seelie king, she stop to see a witch, which is fine because of Kyla. Where I got bugged is when they stayed for a sit down lunch and then Danica casually starts doing dishes. What happened to the sense of urgency? Samael is now too weak to speak. This is not a time to do dishes!

*The last chapter was confusing, as in, I thought there was an editing mistake and a chapter from a future book was accidentally inserted. I think I know where Stark is trying to go with it, but it was clumsily done. Not a good way to end the book. It could have stopped with the previous chapter (which is why I don’t like starting series until they are done. Stupid cliff hangers.) But the last chapter just left me confused and unsure about the author’s intention.

*It felt strange there wasn’t a demon with her throughout her quest. She’s trying to save Samael’s life. More help should have been given by the demons. I know some had already given up hope, but not all. Why wasn’t Vas there? Just a thought.

*Danica should have interrogated the merqueen’s councilors for her. The knife would have been useless to the Queen anyway. Giving up Misty didn’t make sense because it was unnecessary and a waste of a good tool.

Overall, we’ll done Stark! You stepped it up with this book. Thanks for keeping the story more real and more consistent. I’m excited to read the rest of the series!

4.5 Danica is not returning my heart ★★★★☆

This was mind-blowing just like the others. Danica.... that girl,... she is a warrior born of both steel and determination. She is more than just a skilled fighter; she possesses a heart as bold as her knives. Fueled by a deep sense of justice and compassion, she fights not only for her own survival but for the freedom and protection of those who cannot defend themselves. Even if everybody had lost hope but Danica kept going and fought for Samael's life. I'm so glad she had Kyla with her. Throughout this book, Danica faces countless challenges, but with every trial she endures and every battle she survives, she emerges stronger, more determined, and more badass than ever before.

Kyla reached over and squeezed my hand. “You did it Danica. No one thought you could, but you did it.”

Some of my fav quotes-
The griffin watched us out of huge, adoring eyes as we approached. Despite myself, I slowly held out one hand, stroking his ears. Now that I wasn’t in danger, I could appreciate just how rare this experience was. I’d hung out with an honest-to-God griffin.

First Nuri and then Virtus... kill me with cuteness overload
...
“These old paranormal guys are just set in their ways,” Kyla said.
“They need a fresh, young, optimistic perspective.”

Damn right
...
He brushed his lips over mine. “I will love you until death and beyond, little witch.”
...
I loathed prophecies. All they’d ever done was complicate my life.

Yupp...I am the witness
...
I wanted to take my time with her. Wanted to inhale her. Wanted to cut myself open and tuck her under my skin where I could keep her safe.
...

I just wanted Samael to share her burden, somehow help her and himself but unfortunately ummm ...he was of no use. I know he was helpless but still... Danica was always fighting her exhaustion, even I was feeling tired for her.
“Are you okay?” Kyla asked as we left the hut.
“I don’t have time to not be okay,” I said.

"Luck of the Demons" is a great follow up to the last installment where we were left with quite a cliffhanger ending. At the end of book three, Samael was left in a coma like state and Danica is desperate to help it. Unfortunately, everyone is telling her that she needs to sever her ties to him because if she doesn't she will die shortly after he does. Danica is not one to believe in a 'no win' scenario and she plans to find a way to save the demon she loves.

Even though Dani is also grieving the betrayal of some people she thought to be her friends, she moves with a dogged determination. She embarks on a series of quests that will lead her closer to a potential cure for Samael's state. Little does she know but even though Samael is in a dream like state he still has the ability to communicate Dani and his trusted advisor. He is not about to allow Dani to die and he begins to work behind the scene to sever their tie if she is unsuccessful in finding a cure for him.

Danica is not one to mess with and she handles the pressures and challenges of the various quests like a trooper. She even manages to forge some important alliances along the way that could prove useful to her in the future. As the clock is winding down, the pressure builds until the reckoning arrives. Will she restore Samael to his former self or will both of them go down together. You will have to read this installment to find out. I will warn you though, the ending is another cliffhanger and this one is the worst possible one yet.

There was plenty of action and tender moments in this read. I loved the way that despite the tension in Danica's life she never lost her compassion for others. There is also quite a bit of subterfuge at play and she must work her way through that as well. You can tell that we are inching closer and closer to a major battle with her grandfather. The questions is who will be on the winning end?

A nail-biting installment to the Deals with Demons series. I love Danica's "getting sh*t done" attitude. I would be an absolute wreck in her place. My only gripe was the However, still not enough to detract from a 5-star rating. Also getting super excited about the fact that it looks like we will have spin-off for Kyla and a certain unseelie hottie.

4⭐️ This continues to be one of my favourite PNR series of all time.

There have been some plot threads added to the weave slowly throughout this series that are likely to be set up for spin-off romances. This became more overt in this book, but I have to say the author does an excellent job at making it feel natural and not like we are having scenes or moments that feel like an aside to the main plot. I’ve seen this done poorly so many times, so I wanted to call this one out as an excellent example how to lay the groundwork for spin-offs without impacting the overall pace of the primary story. I’m so excited to continue with this series—the cliffhanger, whelp!

I’m just so impressed by this author with every new book I read!

This one kind of lost me. My favorite parts of this series have been the bits that focus on Danica’s bounty hunting/detective work, and this one eliminated that, and it’s looking like the next one will, too.

This installment felt pretty messy, and it bounced around a lot between all of these tasks that Danica had to complete in order to fix Samael. To be frank, after so much push and pull with her when it came to him, the whole “I will destroy the world for you” thing just didn't feel completely genuine to me.
