The problem with rating a book using stars is the wide margins. You cannot write a review unless you award the first star in the automatic template.
Is it absolute ZERO or up to one-fifth of available assessment assuming that the global ideal of ***** means 100?
Declining to review or dumping a book before anything enjoyable is found distorts the overall because of its absence or template enforced award to a book that should not be touched with a barge pole. Got some of both in last year.
Four books into a semi-binge reading of this author's catalogue has a good tale each time with a back story threatening to peak through while irritating having to wait.
My Rebus thought as always is that he is the ultimate in the genre.
IMHO
How do you rate against Ian Rankin? Is 3 stars 50% or 60%.
Unlike Rankin, McDermid, Cleeves, Coben, Peter Robinson et al., we have a lot of self publishers who churn out reasonable stories that need a lot of fillers [excessively about coffee, it seems] but feeling monotone.
If they were a paint it would be magnolia applied badly with a sponge roller.
Kirk has a lively style and is not obviously overstretching his stories at the moment but a lot of characters have their absence of hair described quite often!! Possible irritant filler.
On my Rebusometer I would be saying 70 by comparison because he hasn't got depth of a Rebus and so many books in a short time smacks of development of storyline might run dry long before numbers match Rebus.
In short; Read The Series....Most importantly, keep going as Vol;. 4 goes for it, big time. IT took that long to become comfortable with the characterisation, given that few of you will be form that part of the world. (If you are, you will understand this.) The writing becomes far more gripping when the reader can identify the characters within as individuals. A gripping style of writing and one, as a "local" I can seriously appreciate. The subtle building of pressure as one gets halfway or so through the various volumes is classic, the more so when one can identify with the characters. No concept is outside the bounds, a superb trick by the author. A series I purchased to while away some of the Covid ennui has left me an absolute fan of the style and mind of the author, I look forward to finishing the rest and then looking for new publications by him. Thank You Mr Kirk !!!!! ( I get the feeling I should say "Captain??")
This is book six in this series and all have been great reads. BUT this surpassed the other five.
It starts off going 100mph and NEVER STOPS until the last page. What a book, no question the best of the first six. (already have downloaded book 7)
Almost the whole plot evolves around the hunt for The Whisperer a child killer that has escaped prison and is bent on revenge on DCI Jack Logan. And revenge he does get. One thing JD Kirk is not bashful about is killing off a main (good) character which is what he does again in this book.
However it would be a hard read if you haven't read the prior books as there is so much of the plot line that moves from book to book.
Without question about the best I have read in a long time. READ IT.
I had hopes after the first three books, but books 4 and 6 were a disappointment. I liked book 5, The Last Bloody Straw. It was a tightly woven plot with good characters and some feeling for the Scottish Islands and had real detective work. Unfortunately books 4 and 6 reprise familiar ground: the grumpy, out of control detective, his stupid and corrupt boss, a psycho lose, blood and guts to follow. How would anyone follow this narcissistic leader, whose priority is personal revenge rather than either the law or welfare of his team? For someone who lives in Scotland, the author provides little local color and leaves many details and story lines up in the air. Time to retire DCI Logan.
I am really really enjoying this series of books. They are gritty but with a great sense of humour which really has me laughing out loud. There’s just 2 things. Book 6 was a little too far fetched. Things that in real life wouldn’t happen in a police team and this spoiled that particular book for me. Then there’s the swearing. Now a well placed swear word can have a good effect but when it’s repetitive to the point of unnecessary it’s really spoils it for me. Other than those 2 things I really enjoyed the books in this set. 4 out of 5 reluctantly given because of book 6 and the continual swearing throughout. Otherwise it would definitely be a 5.
I am obsessed by DCI Jack Logan entire series. Can't put them down. Really well written to the point that you feel emotional as to what's coming next in each book. Highly recommended and have already purchased book 3 containing books 7-9. Can't wait to start them.
This book was brilliant & saw a couple of story threads come together. Some of this book was quite shocking & uncomfortable, but I really was on the edge of my seat and couldn’t put it down! Wouldn’t recommend until you have read the previous books in the series.
I've read six of the Jack Logan books this past week. I've come to consider them perfect. Each is well orchestrated with the perfect amount of tension n, mystery and suspense to make it impossible to put a book down until it finished. I really look forward to continuing the series tomorrow!
Read this collection right after finishing the first 3 books. Did not disappoint at all. All 3 books are really good all in their own right, with the same great characters on Logan’s team with interesting storylines. If you have previously read a Jack Logan book and enjoyed it, any one of these titles will not disappoint you I am sure.
This series just got better and better. Book 9 was fantastic from the first page. The end couldn’t have been more exciting and hopefully will lead to more in this series.
How has this character not been optioned for a TV or streaming series? The whole team is painted brilliantly and the stories are full of pace and suspense. Move over Vera and Shetland
We love this series - lots of humour and great characters but also some very dark and dangerous villains. This was the darkest of the lot and an uncomfortable read at times bit I couldn't put it down.
The next box set didn't disappoint. The language and descriptive passages with a quirk of humour continues to make these books a really enjoyable read.
So glad I read all 6 books. All 6 good, but the 6th finished the story that was through all 6 and had me on the edge of my seat. A real couldn't-put-down book.
Wow, wow and wow! Absolutely fantastic read, twists and turns, and a great ending!! I couldn't put the book down. Love the language and humour throughout too!
