Why am I a writer? When I was a young girl, I wanted to be a teacher. I’d line up my stuffed animals in front of a board and teach them the alphabet and how to count. In high school I wanted to be a tennis player. I was on the tennis team, and played at our neighborhood tennis club. Then in college I thought digging dinosaur bones would be a cool job. It wasn’t until I was working at my own public relations agency that I decided I really wanted to write children’s books. I was so inspired by the magic of reading a book that I wanted to see if my active imagination could create magical moments for kids all over the world. I started to write, then sent my stories to publishers, and sold my first manuscript in 1992. I’ve been writing ever since.
Why I write now.
I love the freedom of being my own boss, of coming up with ideas on my own and writing that first draft to see if my idea has any spark. I’m not so crazy about the revising process although there are thrilling moments when I figure out a better way to say something, or when I nail dialog, or work through a complicated plot line. The most exciting moment is when an editor says they want to publish my manuscript. Then I know all my hard work has paid off, and that soon, children will enter my imaginative world through a book.
I received this book to read and review. As a fan of author, Natasha Wing, I was excited to be notified of another book. Natasha Wing outdid herself with this chapter book. The book is a smaller book geared for ages 6-9. As an elementary school teacher, I feel confident this biography would hold the attention of even older children. The illustrations were beautiful that gave a feel for the timer period of the mid 1700s to the mid 1800s. Wing included vocabulary through the book and a glossary at the very end. The book could be read aloud or as an independent read for students/children. We have learned about the Founding Fathers for years beginning at an early age so it was beautiful to read about a Founding Mother and her successes. The story follows Eliza Hamilton as a little girl to an important figure as a Founding Mother and the impact she made.
The story includes happiness, love, tragedy, struggles, and passion. Eliza kept living even after tragedies in her life. With mental health being a rising concern, this biography depicts how you can find your purpose and overcome hardships. Without Eliza, we would not know Alexander as we should. As an adult, I learned a lot from this book. I cannot wait for more!
This book includes opportunity for connections, critical thinking, discussions, and writing through he Think Tanks Wing included throughout the book. The end supports comprehension by giving 10 multiple choice questions. Aside from the beautiful illustrations, the book also has a Table of Contents, short chapters, maps, timelines, which can be incorporated for history/social studies, and can be an introduction for students to begin a research project. This book includes the opportunity for many subject areas or it could easily be read for leisure.
I am an educator of 23 years teaching elementary level students also a fan of author, Natasha Wing. I was thrilled to see her latest publication and how perfectly it fits in my classroom collection for my 5th graders this year. We are studying the birth of our nation and the history tied to it (all history). It is wonderful to have books representing unique perspectives of that time. Natasha has done an incredible job with this chapter book and I hope to see more like it to add to my classroom library! The design and quality text features make this book very accessible to all young readers and levels. The vocabulary included and the ease of use with a glossary was perfectly aligned with our biography projects.
