This was an interesting story featuring Holly, who is at a fancy resort that she and her ex-husband, Lyle used to go to when they were married. She has fond memories of the resort, but this time she is here for her ex-husband's funeral. Also attending are Lyle's second and third wives. Holly finds out quickly that wives two, Megan, and three, Eliana, know nothing of Lyle's first marriage - like it never existed.

This was a touching story and I felt for Holly as revelations unfolded and she questioned her life with Lyle. I think I liked all three of the wives, although they were very different, but I really liked Holly and my heart went out to her.

Holly Penny was 12 jaar getrouwd met Lyle en ze waren dolgelukkig. Ze leken voor elkaar gemaakt te zijn, hun liefde was intens en allesoverheersend, maar blijkbaar toch niet bestand tegen alles wat het leven op hen afvuurde. Eén allesbepalend moment veranderde hun levens volledig en vernietigde hun huwelijk. Nu, decennia later, is Lyle doodverklaard nadat hij 5 jaar daarvoor van de radar verdween en Holly wordt door zijn broer uitgenodigd om zijn leven te vieren in een chique resort waar ze in gelukkiger tijden vaak hebben gelogeerd.

Holly weet dat Lyle na haar nog twee keer is getrouwd en deze vrouwen zijn ook aanwezig. Zij weten echter niet dat Holly bestaat, Lyle heeft hun relatie altijd geheimgehouden en Holly herkent haar Lyle totaal niet in hun verhalen. Wie was Lyle echt? Welke geheimen bewaarde hij nog meer? Wat is er met hem gebeurd? Hoe kunnen de vreemde gebeurtenissen tijdens het weekend worden verklaard? En zal Holly ooit vrede kunnen krijgen met hun breuk en haar nieuwe leven?

Het verhaal wordt voornamelijk in het heden vanuit het perspectief van Holly verteld, met flashbacks naar het begin van haar relatie met Lyle en de jaren die daarop volgden, terwijl je tussendoor af en toe een mailwisseling tussen Lyle en zijn broer leest. Deze overgangen verlopen heel natuurlijk, geven je steeds een extra stukje van de puzzel en uiteindelijk worden al je vragen beantwoord. Door gesprekken met Holly leer je de andere vrouwen van Lyle beter kennen, ze stellen zich steeds meer voor elkaar open en hoewel zij niet de hoofdrol hebben, worden hun karakters goed geschetst.

De personages en hun onderlinge relaties worden mooi neergezet en dit is meer dan een liefdesverhaal met een aantal onverwachte wendingen, het is een gelaagd verhaal over geheimen, vriendschap, onverwachte verbinding, levensveranderende gebeurtenissen, de kracht om door te gaan en jezelf weer leren kennen wanneer je het gevoel hebt dat je jezelf bent kwijtgeraakt. Het is liefdevol, kwetsbaar, grappig, slim, mysterieus, verdrietig, warm en boeiend tegelijkertijd, je blijft doorlezen omdat je sommige geheimen opgehelderd wilt zien, het verhaal is erg vlot, soepel en prettig geschreven en hoewel ik één wending niet geheel geloofwaardig vond, is het geheel echt sterk, een erg fijn boek dat fans van de boeken van Liane Moriarty zeker zal aanspreken!

I absolutely ADORED this beautiful book. Profoundly moving and very wise, this  stunningly original and touching tale is one to savour and re-read. Although at its heart a love story with a twist, it is so much more, layered with wisdom and a woman's brave struggle to carry on going after a life changing event. So very beautiful and thought provoking on so many levels, this is a must read for everyone, a wonderfully absorbing tale that I  guarantee will make you think, question and change. I loved every single character, they jump off the page and into your heart. Norman, Beatrice, Janet,Melinda, Eliana, even Megan and Bodie, Lyle, Caleb and especially Holly became my friends.  They are colourful and glorious and uniquely, wonderfully human. Do read this book - it celebrates humanity, love, life and provides insights into what's really important. An immersive delight of a book - just what is needed during these difficult times.

This is a great read, it was well written with a great storyline and well developed characters that I took to my heart. It was a captivating read that also had romance as well as twists and turns. I couldn't put this book down it was truly compelling.

I was a little concerned that I would not like this book. I was so wrong! The story caught me by surprise and I couldn't let go! The characters are well developed. This book is a mystery, a love story, and, occasionally, super confusing. But it all comes together and you're guessing what the next plot twist will be. You will love some of the characters and hate others. But you will not be able to stop reading this book!

Holly Penny attends the funeral of her ex-husband, Lyle. The funeral is taking place at an elegant mountain resort that Holly and Lyle enjoyed spending time at. Holly is wowed by the little touches that are put into place after her arrival, things that she enjoyed when spending time with Lyle at this beautiful vacation spot. It makes Holly feel as if Lyle is still there. After her arrival at the resort, Holly meets Lyle’s other wives. She is shocked by the character of these other women, as well as, the information that related about Lyle’s character and actions. This is not the man that Holly remembers falling in love with. Whose recollections are accurate and what other secrets will be revealed about Lyle. Holly will have to reconcile the man that she thought she married with what actually occurred. This story was difficult to put down. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the advance review copy in exchange for my honest review. I will be seeking out other novels from this author.

Holly attended the funeral of her ex husband and only then discovered Lyle didn’t bother telling his next 2 wives about her which puzzled and hurt her. There were very few interesting parts of this book and so many unnecessary details to wade through before getting to them. This made the book far too long. The description of brain injury was exceptional but the endless communication between the brothers certainly wasn’t. I can see that lots of people seemed to have enjoyed it but sadly not me. I really did like the sound of this novel but not when it actually came to reading it. I was given this ARC by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Thoughtful description of how a brain injury altered a previously idyllic marriage. Holly goes to her ex-husbands funeral and is surprised to hear that Lyle never mentioned her to either of his two subsequent wives. The wives remain after the ceremony for the reading of the will and the discussion moves in a big way to values. What do billions count of you are dissatisfied or deeply unhappy? My old daddy would say that money enables you to be miserable in comfort but that isn't the gist of Holly's soul searching. Predictable but satisfactory ending.

I love thrillers and this was NOT. It was a drama with a little bit of mystery - is he dead or is he still alive? but I enjoyed it anyway! The main character had experienced a huge setback in life - a medical issue that changed everything - and watching how she navigated it (poorly or heroically) was interesting. And of course I was waiting to see how she would choose in the end. Very satisfying!!~~

Unfortunately, this wasn't really my cup of tea. From the blurb, I was expecting a psychological thriller about a first wife who attends her ex-husband's funeral and clashes with his later wives who didn't know she existed. This was more in the "Contemporary Women" category. It was well-written, just not what I was anticipating.

“De diepere laag in dit verhaal zal de lezer raken, De eerste vrouw is een echte Mustread.”

De begrafenis van haar ex man is voor Holly een emotionele trip, ze reist af naar de plek waar zij zo gelukkig waren. Ook zijn, zijn broer Caleb en de twee vrouwen waar Lyle na Holly mee getrouwd was aanwezig ,voor de twee vrouwen is het een grote verrassing dat Holly bestond, Lyle heeft het nooit met hen over een eerder huwelijk gehad. Holly heeft het idee dat zij haar ex man nooit echt goed heeft gekend, of hebben de andere vrouwen een heel andere Lyle leren kennen, want in geen van de verhalen herkent Holly haar grote liefde die zij na “de verandering” heeft verloren.

Muna Shehadi, heeft met De eerste vrouw haar moeder een eer bewezen, hoofdpersonage Holly heeft net als de moeder van de Amerikaanse auteur niet aangeboren hersenletsel waardoor haar leven in één klap veranderde. Shehadi weet deze personage uitermate overtuigend neer te zetten, de lezer proeft de onmacht, voelt de frustratie maar ook de daadkracht, het is een sterke personage en in de verhaallijn zal zij de lezer ontroeren. Sowieso is het verhaal een echte ontroerende tranentrekker, een heerlijke leesflow zal de lezer omarmen en pas loslaten wanneer de laatste punt gelezen is. Vergeet ook het nawoord niet want hierdoor zal het verhaal nog meer betekenis krijgen en zal de karakter Holly nog meer aanzien krijgen.

Muna Shehadi weet met deze stad alone de lezer te raken, de schrijfstijl en de sfeer impressie passen als een warme jas. Aan verbeelding geen tekort want de luxe sfeer en de intrigerende verhaallijn zullen zeker indruk maken op de lezers. Men zal zich wanen in het luxe resort en de ontroering zal voelbaar zijn. De eerste vrouw is net als de drie dochters trilogie een echte Mustread, een auteur die het verdient om in de spotlights te staan door haar manier waarop zij gevoel en emotie weet over te brengen aan de lezer

Een meer dan dikke aanrader voor de fans van echte romantiek met een diepere onderlaag, een verhaal met inhoudt.

There were few interesting (not all believable) twists in this book. But overall i liked the characters, the story and the ending.
