Victims are going missing, clearly victims of a serial killer, and FBI Special Agent Ilse Beck suspects this is no ordinary killer—with no ordinary M.O. With the clock running out, can she crack the case in time to save the next victim?
In this bestselling mystery series, FBI Special Agent Ilse Beck, victim of a traumatic childhood in Germany, moved to the U.S. to become a renowned psychologist specializing in PTSD, and the world’s leading expert in the unique trauma of serial-killer survivors. By studying the psychology of their survivors, Ilse has a unique and unparalleled expertise in the true psychology of serial killers. Ilse never expected, though, to become an FBI agent herself.
As Ilse goes deeper down the rabbit hole, she soon realizes something isn’t adding up. She must put her brilliant mind to the test to make sense of all the evidence—including the clues that may be hiding right under her nose.
Will she crack under the pressure?
And will it be too late?

Ilse has a very troubled past and still today she suffers the consequences of it. Even when working a case she almost freezes when she recognizes similarities between what happened to her and her family and the circumstances she has to face because of a crime. Tom is also a troubled soul, he doesn't talk much, doesn't let anyone reach him, and is going worse by the minute making Ilse feel afraid for her life. Besides finding the serial killer who is striking a small town, they both need to tackle inner issues regarding their fathers. Who will help Tom? Who will help Ilse? Will they find the peace they deserve to live their lives in full? I received a free copy of this book from the author and this is my unbiased opinion.
The story is fine , but the author needs to pay more attention to detail. Before, no one knew anything about Ilse’s past (and how did she get into the FBI with a new identity?) but now they know about Ilse’s father in prison in Germany? At the end of the book, a person gets hurt, has a cast on his leg and the next day walks without a problem and cast! The word “winces” is way overused as well
Does not use F word but there are other random curse words like damn it or shit. Another good book that pulled me right in and held my interest. Listened at 1.75 speed.
