is about a young man's struggle for freedom from
Socialist Yugoslavia. He shares his early experiences during and after
WWil, growing up on a small farm as one of eight children with a
sometimes violent father. His yearning for a better life *across the border
led to repeated escape attempts, despite each time being caught and gaole
then threatened with harsher penalties if caught once more. Undaunted
he persisted and finally gained refugee status in Italy before eventually
emigrating to Australia. After settling in Sydney he was not content and
moved from job to job unwilling to join a union, which he saw as being
akin to the Socialist government he had escaped from. Then one day he
saw black opal in a city jewellery store and his life was changed forever.
Moving to the Outback town of Lightning Ridge with his young family he
pursued the elusive gem and, after much hardship, forged an enviable
lifestyle as his own boss, free of any yokes Seeing more of this sunburnt
country than most born here, he and his wife travelled all over the countr
researching and later promoting the opal books that shared his lifetime of
experience in opal mining.
