University Press returns with another short and captivating book – a brief history of Scotland.
Replete with its whisky, kilts, bagpipes, and castles, Scotland is an enchanting country with a rich history, extraordinary culture, and striking scenery. Ever since the first humans arrived more than 12,000 years ago, Scotland has attracted immigrants, assimilated cultures, spawned clans, and fought fiercely for political, philosophical, and economic independence.
from hunting and gathering, to the Neolithic Revolution, to the visits of ancient Greek explorers, to Roman invasions, to the arrival of Christianity, to Viking raids, to the evolution of the clans, to the Scottish monarchy, to William Wallace, to Scottish independence, to the Scottish Renaissance, to Mary, Queen of Scots, to the Scottish Enlightenment, to the Industrial Revolution, to the First and Second World Wars, to the referendum on Scottish Independence.
This short book peels back the veil and provides a brief glimpse into the gut-wrenching, heart-warming, grief-inducing, awe-inspiring history of the Scottish clanlands – a glimpse that you can read in about an hour.
The book hit many of the highlights of Scottish history but leaves out much that is interesting. What is the difference between n the Highland ers and low landers? What has best behind the religious conflicts? Why are the Scots still so angry at the English? Brief is valuable but perhaps overdone in this case.
Is this one star fair? Maybe but is is it fair that I got this to have something funny and fun to listen to midway through have an extremely graphic rape scene described in blistering detail midway through? Also for anyone aware of Mel gibsons behavior it is a bit jarring to hear the Gibson praise that I will blissfully assume was in a joke. Please do not tell me otherwise. Not that anyone will read this but if you do really consider if you need that graphic assault scene in your work or if you do if it needs to be described in such a way that will send many of us to our therapists.
A short book on the history and treats and culture of Scotland. It gives your view of the main people and Skyler’s history and the wars and battles that reply. It also shows you the interventions and how the Scottish people are fiercely independent. Very informative book and I recommended
Honestly, this book is a brief history of the Clanlands just as it says. It's an easy read you can blow through in an hour or so. It was okay but not memorable.
If you know a preteen interested in Scotland or their Scottish ancestry, this would be an excellent read for them to get started. It's not overly challenging but gives just enough to be interested.
Provides a broad brush overview. Not intended to be a detailed history. Lacks fascinating detail and personal interest stories that would enhance the distinctive culture
Fairly complete history of Scotland. No extras just quick flowing information hitting the high points. Suggest this book to those taking a vacation to the island!
This book covers more recent history of Scotland. It is closer to a summary overview than a true history. Despite that, it is a quick read that gives a lot of information in a short space.
This little book is well written and informative. It the includes a surprising amount of information in very few pages. I learned quite a bit and highly recommend it for anyone wanting to know more about Scotland.
Clanlands was well written, succinct in historical characters. It provided a quick review of the main changes of government over the centuries. Also this short history emphasized Scottish love of their land, customs and independence.
I wanted a quick overview of the history of Scotland but this was a poorly written "book" and wished I had taken the effort to find something more comprehensive.
