The Villainess reverses the hourglass (English title) is about Aria Roscent, The daughter of a prostitute who married a wealthy count. Because of this and her beauty, Aria's status in society skyrocketed. But soon she's betrayed by her non-bloodrelated sister and ultimately meets death. Just as Aria desparately wishes she could change her fate, she sees a curious hourglass that takes her back into the past

Now look, I hate summaries in reviews too, but I had to pull out tits and bits from here and there to compose one so you here reading this review could get some CONTEXT. Because I doubt you've ever heard of it.

Anyways, Going into this, I obviously didn't have much expectation. Otomeisekai trash is Otomeisekai trash. BuT tHaT dOeSn'T mEaN I dOn'T gEt To CoMpLaIn

It's gonna be the characters mostly, as those are the selling points of most Otomeisekai Manhwa. But let's start with some other stuff first.

+The Art and Illustrations are GORGEOUS

+Aria getting her revenge is literally the best, most satisfying part of the story

-Literally the worst romance I've seen in ANY story. Yet again another Otomeisekai which would've been amazing if it just stayed political.

-All the characters either really love or hate Aria.

-The childhood friends thing was done poorly.

Now, the characters

Aria Roscent
Definitely the most fleshed out character in the series. I mean she IS the main character. Though it is kinda annoying how she NEVER struggles with anything for more than 5 chapters. And her problems are non existent after she starts seeing Asher, because he's ThE cRoWn PrInCe. Seriously, she needs more flaws, or consequences for her actions.

Asterope Franz(Asher)
I just skimmed the manhwa EVERY.SINGLE.TIME he showed up after a few chapters. He is THE most boring Male lead in the history of make leads, boy DESPERATELY needs a personality which doesn't consist of him just simply worshipping Aria. Also, It's werid and kinda funny at this point how Aria thinks it's romantic every time he teleports into her room UNANNOUNCED.
Why do you care so much about Aria? Dude, aren't you a crown prince? Don't you have like, Crown prince stuff to do? Do that. You're gonna be the next king. I don't care if you're 16-17 or whatever.

Mielle Roscent
Aria's younger sister, the supposed main antagonist of the story (for a while anyways, along with lady Isis). Honestly, she deserved better writing. I truly wish she was smarter so Aria would have a formidable opponent.

Not gonna lie, I feel she gets too much shit done to her in the first few chapters when she was 13-14. I mean sure, she hated Aria and is trying to run her life, but kids her age are so easy to manipulate or convince. I know Aria could have gotten her on her side, she is capable enough to do so. They could have some other much more influential person as the antagonist (Lady Isis?) And it would have been an amazing subplot. Mielle is a far, far, FAR more interesting character than Asher. And if she had just gotten better writing and more agency, then the story would be SO much better.

You know how character just thinks he's an absolute piece of trash just because he couldn't stand up for himself? Well hey at least he has something called a PERSONALITY. Even a little bit, but it's there. That must be a foreign concept to most characters.

There are a few other characters, such as Aria's biological parents, Ca*n, Lady Isis etcetera but I think the review would be far too long if I included them(not that it isn't already) so I'll just stop here for now.

But you know what I hated the most? It's the fact that the reason Aria got a second chance ultimately was because She had the RoYaL bLoOd PrIvIlAgE. Of CoUrSe OnLy NoBlEs CaN lOoK pRetTy oR wHaTeVeR.

As I said before, this would've been much better if it was more political and the Romance didn't interfere. Otherwise the end chapters just got boring and predictable that I could skip chapters without any consequences, and I couldn't wait for it to end.

I still think that if you want to, then give the first 30-45 chapters a try, they're geniunly good, and then continue if you like I suppose ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Me quedé en el capítulo 90 (quién me mandó a leer un manhwa ongoing la re pu) y, honestly? Estoy fascinada por lo mucho que disfruté esta historia. Creo que es el manwha más largo que leí sin aburrirme o pensar "bueno, ¿cuánto falta?" cada vez que terminaba un capítulo. Hoy descubrí que me gustan mucho las historias de reencarnación con un plot de venganza.

Bueno, ahora sí: a levantar la pala y a ponerme con las cosas de la facultad.

The villainess turns the hourglass has very beautiful drawings, it's a Korean webtoon recently published in English, printed in full color. To me it's just one of the best out there, because Aria really doesn't go the usual route of the villainess archetype in villainess genre.
A great read, can't wait for volume two.

this book really encompasses my feelings. "wow, i wish i had my time back!"

this manhwa is just so mind-numbingly DUMB. it felt like i was losing braincells as i was reading it.

first of all, the female lead, aria. MAN is it hard to watch her. why does she STILL turn to evil? it makes it really unjustified when she wins against her sister. it just makes her seem really insufferable. she's manipulative, and not to say i dont like girl power woohoo but like it's to the point where it's really unforgivable? like she manipulates people that she really doesn't need to? to an extent she ALSO manipulates the crown prince, which is like, giving red flag toxic relationship vibes!! yay! it just really makes her the same breed as her sister, manipulating her way to the top.

to add on to this, i really don't feel like she had any interest in asterope as a person, but only as his position as a crown prince. because the AMOUNT of times he saves her from some bs and swoops in like a bald eagle is the amount of times i cringed over this book. too many. and asterope has the male lead personality of a saggy sack of potatoes. he's literally a convenient plot device to get aria out of danger, essentially giving him zero other personality traits other than "i love aria!" which just makes me want to inject pure unadulterated cringe into my body because omg i do not care

i also don't like how she is shown to have an actual like noble dad. her whole sentiment of like 'i want to help the poor' had merit BECAUSE she was from humble origins, but then it turns out she had her REAL DAD all along! wow! like it just detracts from like... everything she stands for? since all of her struggles and things she was fighting for was because of the class divide? and then she just gets to have a marquis dad all of a sudden that comes out of absolutely NOWHERE? like before her actions were justified because they were bullying her for being born in the lower class but then she's suddenly a noble and you're like ok?? what was the point???

i also don't feel like mielle (her sister) did anything so wrong for her to deserve what happened to her? (at least at the beginning) like sure she like drew you towards execution in your past life but you also literally have a superpower that lets you be perfection incarnate. also that whole bullying your mielle thing is kinda YOUR fault. also she's not that infuriating in the beginning? she kinda just gets screwed over and THEN decides to turn to harassing aria. plus the way she literally turns her back on like her maid who's been serving her for her entire life like you just decide to let her die???

CAIN. let's talk about cain. he's a literal PREDATOR. preying on his STEPSISTER?? like sure you're not related but jesus you deserved the death... i was so grossed out when i saw that like oml... and he ATTACKS her after like not seeing her for a while?? and like he gets SPARED by aria?? hello?? incestuous much?? when i tell you i LAUGHED OUT LOUD when mielle ACCIDENTALLY poisons him. best part of the whole manhwa. it was so deserved.

iris and her ambitions are so stupid. like just because you didn't get engaged to asterope you decide to literally try and take over the empire? it's really dumb. i don't think she's a well written character honestly, and all the political aristocratic faction bs was really boring. and how she gets taken down is really dumb. like the other empire's king or something is in cahoots with the crown prince and then she gets executed for treason. rofl moment tbh like the whole thing really gave me an aneurysm

poor oscar man. did he live? yes. but it was so undeserved for him to literally lose everything just because of his stupid sister. he literally gets his ass obliterated by politics and becomes a commoner. just a victim of everything, like being engaged to mielle, and being too much of a coward to stand up to his sister. plus he's also a victim of being manipulated by our QUEEN aria!

my biggest issue honestly is the hourglass itself. the hourglass has 'drawbacks', by making aria LOOK older. wow. WOW. what a drawback! it doesn't even show on her, she just gets prettier as the art improves... it honestly just makes people more attracted to her anyway. like it's basically a zero cost broken superpower. and when she reveals this superpower to the ml he doesn't bat an eye. he doesn't even bother to BLINK. he dont care if she becomes his noona. it don't matter. nothing in this book matters because aria is our perfect mary sue that gets 50000000 layers of plot armour.

in summary, this book is a 1/5 and i can't believe there are only like 17 other people agreeing with me.

Un des meilleurs manhwas dans le "villainess" genre que j'ai pu lire (aussi parce qu'un des seuls complets, c'est une rareté). J'ai beaucoup aimé le personnage d'Aria, elle planifie très bien les choses. J'ai en particulier aimé le côté "business woman" et ses entreprises qu'elle élabore grâce aux infos du passé dont elle se souvient pour devenir riche et influente, ses donations permettant de s'élever dans la société. Le love interest est mims mais assez basique, c'est clairement le prince héritier depuis le début mais Aria est en mode "hum tous les critères fit le prince héritier mais ce mec devant moi ne pourrait jamais être le prince héritier mdr", ce qui est plutôt drôle. Les deux ont des magical abilities : Aria le tablier qui lui permet de remonter le temps et réjouer des interactions à son avantage, et le prince qui peut se téléporter. D'ailleurs c'est parce que les deux ont du sang de la famille royale, of cours Aria secret princess plot voyons c'est un manhwa.

Le roi du pays voisin aux cheveux blancs qui aide le prince et Aria contre les nobles qui se rebellent est vachement plus bg, j'aurais aimé qu'il soit plus développé (ferais-je une transition de goûts entre love interests aux cheveux foncés et aux cheveux clairs ?).

Mielle est la méchante que tu adores détester, mais qui manque un peu en crédibilité parce qu'elle est quand même vachement conne. J'ai trouvé le dernier volume un peu long par rapport à la vengeance contre elle, j'aurais bien voulu qu'on la tue en même temps que les autres nobles rebelles . Après je comprends l'idée d'Aria qui fait exprès de lui donner une deuxième chance qu'elle gâche elle-même en reprenant ses vieilles habitudes et essayant d'empoisonner Aria, mais au final empoisonne son frère et pousse son père à se suicider (d'ailleurs j'ai trouvé la fin dure pour eux deux, dans cette vie ils étaient pas si horribles envers Aria).

this was by far one of the best manhwas i have ever read. i spent my whole day yesterday reading almost the whole story cuz every single chapter was so frickin good and there was just always something happening. i love the characters with my whole heart and they deserved the happy ending they got.

aria is most definitely one of, if not my most favorite, main character in all the manhwas i’ve read. asher was such a sweetheart and would do anything for aria. aria’s mom was amazing too, literally one of the best mom ever. jessie, sarah, and many other characters were very likable and the story was just so well-written im in awe

i most definitely recommend reading this, i have no regrets

3.5 Stars.

This was truly quite the study into petty villainy, lol.
And I don't mean that in a bad way! It was overall an entertaining, face paced story following Aria's chance to redo her life.
For a lot of this story I was irritated with how Aria would act so sure of herself and like she was true villainess as she did overall benign things. However, later on Aria *does* do some pretty evil stuff while also humbly recognizing that she isn't that smart, she just has extra knowledge due to the time travel. She is a pretty complex and deep character who is thankfully likeable throughout the whole series!

The epilogue was too dang long tho.

I read this in 2 days. Not just this actually, since this is just the first season. Oh no no no.
I read the whole 125 chapters - yes including the epilogue.

It was fun. It’s among my top Manhwas along with beware of the villainess and who made me a princess. It’s one of those Manhwas that stay with you.

Excuse my bland review it’s like midnight and I’m sleep deprived and all I can really think of is lippe and bliss. Which is another good thing. Lippe and Bliss - so cute?

Gotta love how honest Aria is about her motivations and her not being a good person. Even when she's nice, it's for ulterior motives.

But we can't hate her for she's going after people who've wronged her. In fact, even after changing how she acts and improving herself, they still don't appreciate her efforts and work against her. Live even the staff, except Jessie. Oscar is collateral damage tho

These are the circumstances that have been created for her, if she doesn't use her cunning, power, money and manipulation, she won't stand a chance against Mielle's games

Absolutely. Fantastic.

Rather than a reformed villainess, she is simply wiser, carefully honing her knowledge and skill to systematically destroy others. What's better than that?

There are a few fleeting moments of humanity as she grows bit by bit, but what I particularly enjoy is that she is not wholly dependant upon her knowledge of the future or immensely surprised as her influence changes the world around her.

Plus, the artwork is amazing. Worth every penny.

3,5 Sterne, gelesen als deutsche Printausgabe "Aria & die goldene Sanduhr der Zeit" von Papertoons. Hat mir gut gefallen, der Zeichenstil ist wunderbar anzusehen. Die Geschichte bleibt allerdings noch etwas oberflächlich, ich denke aber, dass sich das mit den sich anbahnenden Komplikationen in den kommenden Bänden ändern wird. Ich würde mir für die Fortsetzung ein tiefgründigeres Charakterdesign und mehr Nebenfiguren wünschen, die nicht nur Statisten sind.

I really liked the novel. It was satisfying and I love the fl. I like the manhwa more than the novel since it's faster. My favorite part was when Aria and her mom were talking while drinking tea. I don't know why but I just love that scene. The fl is smart and actually a villain. Most fl villainess books aren't even evil but Aria is. She isn't a good person. She was a horrible person in her past life and did horrible things out of jealousy. Now she's still a villain but a smarter one.

Eu amei esse manhwa, e principalmente por causa da Aria. Ela é determinada, calculista, não tem medo de fazer o que precisa pra atingir seus objeticos e é super inteligente. Também amei o relacionamento dela com o Asher, pois foi muito saudável e maduro, e também o relacionamento com as criadas e com a mãe. Houveram momentos que eu achei que algumas situações duraram mais do que precisavam, porém isso não me incomodou

خیلی قشنگ‌تر از چیزی بود که انتظار داشتم. :)) فکر می‌کردم روند انتقام گرفتن لوس و بی‌منطق پیش بره ولی جالب بود. شخصیت آریا رو هم دوست داشتم و مثل قهرمان‌های دختر سیندرلایی نبود. و فکر می‌کنم خیلی بی‌انصافی باشه اگه از آرت‌ش نگم. غرق لباس‌ها و تک تک جزئیات‌ش می‌شدم. و آه، استروپ. TT چه اسم بامسمی‌ای داشتی پسر. TT
درکل، شاهکار نیست ولی بسیار زیباست.

I was hooked from the beginning! I do love a good revenge story. The character designs were amazing but the costume designs were *chef's kiss*. My only gripe was probably they were trying to portray a 17 year-old but the heroine look like she's in her early twenties. Also, I know this is just me but, it couldn't hurt if there were more romantic moments.

I absolutely loved this!! I would say the only problem i have is how she would refer to sarah (and the others that we readers sees as her friends) as just a means to increase her social connections and status. Although that was the idea at first but when they grew closer and aria got a lot older that was still the dynamic especially between her and sarah which was kinda disheartening to read.

I read the Korean webnovel (and the Manwha) and I LOVED this! I love a good revenge story where people get what they deserve and the romance was cute. No spice, but the romance was really sweet and it felt like a kdrama where even holding hands made me squeal.
