Apparently this book has already been revised so tell me why does it feel like it requires a lot more editing? The writing is just so clunky. And to be honest, this book reads more like self-insert fanfiction??

Pretty cover though.

“Little did he know, she didn’t need saving.”

SHADOW PLAY. Do you need to know more? Lol

Kick ass witch who doesn’t need a man to rescue her? Check.

Just enough smut to plot? Check.

Paranormal elements with witches, demons, etc? Check.

Side characters who help elevate this story? Check.

From start to finish, Tricky Magic kept me intrigued, wholly satisfied, and wanting more with each page. I honestly cannot decide what I love more, our sassy-take no shit main character Ellea or the overall plot line of this captivating book. With perfect amounts of sexy moments to actual plot, this book is a beautiful balance.

L.L Campbell takes the classic idea of witches, demons, wolves, and even more paranormal beings and turns it to a story that’s uniquely her own. Providing elements that make you want to keep turning the page to read more along with characters who drive the whole book forward, Tricky Magic is a book to add to your TBR if you love paranormal romance. There are surprises that will leave you gasping, characters that shock you with their actions, and moments that will leave you feeling all the good things in all the right places. Lol.

If you’re looking for a new book by a new author to add to your list to read, Tricky Magic is the perfect upcoming release. This is an adult novel, with adult situations, characters, etc. It is beyond worth it and I already want to re read it.

This book is a 4.5/5⭐️ for me and I’m OBSESSED! The world building was great. There are witches, magic, demons, wolves, vampires, familiars, and more.
The story follows a young, very powerful trickster witch who is still learning how to use and control her powers. She has a troubled past that is a secret for the most part. And because she doesn’t really fit in where she’s from, she leaves her town to take a break and heads to her family cabin in the woods. And that is when we meet Ros.
Ros. Oh sexy, shadow wielding Ros. I love him so much. He too has a troubled past that this book doesn’t touch much on, but i have a feeling book 2 definitely will. The relationship between Ellea and Ros is so fun to read and never boring. The spice in this book was 🔥🔥🔥
This book was so perfect and well written. I’m so ready for book 2!!

"I would have done anything just to have your hands on me. Hurting me, caressing me. You could have done whatever you wanted and I would have thanked you." he said

Now this really was the smutty goodness I was promised.

We have two POVs in this book. Ellea and Ros. At the beginning we even have a little RH, with Ellea having four men she hooks up with.

Ella is a strong, badass female MC who I loved throughout the whole book. The relationship between her and her familiar is written really well, the scene where the both of them have a Harry Potter movie marathon was the cutest.
The tension between her and Ros was everything, as well as the banter. Him always trying to rile her up with her scowling and making snarky remarks and him loving every second of it.
I loved the yearning, it wasn´t insta-love and Ellea made Ros work for it.

I loved the side characters in this, especially Sam and Devon and their relationship and I am excited to see where the next book will take them.

The only thing I have to critique is that the pace feels really slow at times and the ending came a bit unexpected and quick for me in comparison to the general pace of the book. That´s why I deducted half a star.

Overall this was an amazing read. All the fantasy smutty goodness you can ask for with good side characters and a nicely written storyline. Also the page design of the paperback was absolutely gorgous!!

So I would like to start by saying that although I'm not giving this book a good rating, I still see the potential and want to read the second book.

I will start with the good part, what I liked:

- Sex positive heroine: I LOVED that Ellea had other partners before meeting the hero, that she was confident, comfortable in her body, and made her own rules. But my favorite part is that we see the heroine having a sex life on page before the hero.

I tried to remember if I ever read that previously, but I can't think of one example in which we see the heroine's healthy sex life in all its glory without the main hero. It's mentioned but never shown in most cases. Now the opposite... I can think of several heroes who had sex lives displayed before the heroine appeared in the books.

So, because of those odds, it feels so refreshing, exciting, and even a feminist takeaway to see a heroine treated as an equal. Something as natural as a woman with a sexual past that should not be hidden or shied away from. Congrats author.

- No OW or OM drama: I understand that, in some cases, to be realistic, and to propel the plot... the author needs to use this trope, but I was so relieved that I had a break from it in Tricky Magic. Some of the last books I read had it in such a full capacity that I was beyond frustrated, so it was so good to read a book without this plot device.

- Consent: I really liked how consent was portrayed here in distinct situations and in many steps along the way. I loved every time it appeared in a smut scene and how verbal consent was important to Ros.

- The Smut: I found the book amazing in that department, creative and with perfect timing and size descriptions. I liked the dirty talk too, and how the smut felt organic, sexy, and a real pants combusted LOL.

- Ellea, Billy, Gram, Ros, Sam and Devon: I liked Ellea a lot, that she wasn't a damsel in distress, that she was sassy and fierce yet also had vulnerabilities and fears. I loved Billy and Gram, and I can't wait to read the novella.

Ros I have to say that I wasn't a fan of him when he encountered Ellea for the first time and until most of the book - he felt needy, stalkerish, immature, and "too much too soon". But, the bastard grew on me towards the end. So I'm putting him in limbo until the next book. I really liked Sam and Devon and I need more of them in the next book.

- The main mystery: I absolutely want to know more about the meanings and whys of Ellea and Ros's nightmares. Also, Ellea's past with her parents and Ros's past with his parents and his "old kingdom".

So, what I didn't like:

This book has two main problems. It feels like the first book by the author in the sense that Tricky Magic feels underdeveloped and has some beginner's errors.

And yeah, I know it's the author's first book, but there is a distinction between being the first book and feeling like a first book. The mistakes:

- Characterization: "the boys" looked more like a unit than 3 different characters, I get that Ellea places them all with the same status, but they could at least have more individualities that would set them apart and make me recognize them as a single character.

Speaking of Luke and Aidan, what really differentiates them? Even their physical descriptions were faulty, the only thing that I know about Luke's is that he has a tattoo;

- Worldbuilding: I needed more about it. The worldbuilding was depicted with lone words rather than valid descriptions;

- Magic system: the system was lacking a better explanation;

- Length: I think it could be a shorter book.

And that sends me to the second problem: not much happened

It started with a bang, and I was invested in knowing more about Ellea and Ros (the book is told from dual POV) and their similar nightamares. But when she went to the town of Glenover...

The middle dragged a lot, and nothing besides the smut - which was really well done, grabbed my attention. Then, only when I arrived at 89% of the book it became interesting again. And for a book with 445 pages, that is a lot of filler.

Lastly, the romance felt off, as in they had few important and substantial conversations and romantic moments. The majority of the powerful discussions and heart-to-hearts took place with their best friends, not with each other.

While the smut was on point, the romance felt superficial and the physical attraction made way more sense than "falling in love". I hope this will be remedied in the next book.

What the eff is this??

This book is an editing nightmare. It switches between multiple tenses every other sentence. Random words are capitalized where they don't need to be (uncle, mother, or queen not being used as a name, birthday, etc). A crapload of punctuation is missing and there is an excessive amount of telling versus showing.

I've barely made it to 10% and I just don't think I can keep going. I like my romantic fantasy with an actual story, and it became obvious what kind of book this was when the FMC has graphic sex with her masseuse within the first 20 or so pages. I normally wouldn't care--I like my books with some steam--but it was blatantly gratuitous and offered absolutely nothing to the book. I haven't even made it to the MMC's POV--and probably won't. There just isn't enough here to keep me hooked. The only thing related to the plot I've discovered in 5 chapters is that Ellea has a recurring nightmare. Forty pages and that's *it*. No thanks.

Don't waste your time.

*ARC Review* 4.5 Stars Revised Edition:
Tricky magic is perfect for readers who enjoy adult PNR with slow-burn, spice, and sassy MCs.

Not only did I adore both MCs, but I also loved the supporting characters!
Ellea is a badass but with vulnerabilities and insecurities. And Ros is her perfect counterpart. He is a grumpy grump with a heart of filthy gold. I FREAKING LOVED HIM!!! 🛐
Their chemistry was so good (and the spice y'all! 😮‍💨)

"I have been here for over a thousand years, but I have never come across someone like her."

The beginning didn't feel slow, but the MMC was not introduced early on, and the agony for them to meet was eating me up.
But the rest of Tricky Magic did definitely make up for the lost time!!! 🔥

Her familiar Billy and the supporting characters (especially her new best friend) were highlights for me!! (These three watching movies together was so cute)

I can't wait to see how the overarching plot will develop! And that ending left me desperate for Tricky Princess!

🗂Genre: Paranormal Romance

🏷Tropes:

4 - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“My life has been spent looking for ways to change, ways to control this monster that I am destined to become. And I am getting tired of it.”

Holy. All the author had to do is mention Shadowplay and it had me running to amazon to grab a copy.

Tricky Magic is a sexy and dark paranormal romance that features witches, demons, and many more supernatural creatures.

“So many things are wrong with me,” he said in a way that showed he was fully okay with that statement. “If you’re lucky, you will get to learn all of them.”

• Slow-burn romance.
• Spice? 10/10.
• Complex heroine struggling with her powers.
• A sinfully hot love interest that is at times possessive and at times soft. He is swoon-worthy.
• Cast of fun characters.
• Includes mature and dark topics.
• A unique magic system.
• Supernatural creatures like demons, witches, wolven, shifters,
• It's not RH but at one point the MC has multiple partners and she is open about her sexuality.

“I’m still torn between killing her and dragging her to bed.”

I really enjoyed the chemistry between Ellea and Ros, it was scorching!

Although the author was generous with the spicy scenes, but she did a great job at balancing it with the plot. She didn't fall into the trap of losing her grip of the story between the spicy scenes which I think happens with many authors.

The characters multilayered and the author did a really good job with their arcs.

One problem I had is that I found the magic system a tad confusing and the pacing was off to me sometimes.

Other than that, I'm excited to see what will unfold in the next book after that cliffhanger!

I have now read this story 3 times, with the third being completed via audiobook. The way this story wraps me up and fills me with so much emotion never gets old. You will laugh, cry and clench your thighs in this delightful story full of Magic & angst.

The characters are complex, and so easy to fall in love with. Knowing we’ve only scratched the surface of who they are has me desperate for more of them. The story is full of intrigue and secrets that will have you devouring this story for answers.

Audio narration was so insanely hot 🔥 and some dinners may or may not have been burnt due to insane amounts of distraction listening to these two say the most delightful things in my ears.

Aaaaaaaaand, we’re back.

As many know, I initially DNF this debut novel. If you read my earlier review, know those thoughts still stand. But I felt it was important to share a more cohesive reflection.

Do I maintain the same reservations? Yes. Will I continue the series? Indeed. This book is really perfect for this time of year and is sure to excite NA and adult fantasy readers alike.

Tricky Magic features a host of supernatural creatures, various pop culture references, and endless tropes. It begins as a single POV, eventually shifting to a dual perspective that truly befits the characters.

Where this book falls in ranking is the pacing and prose. The repetition and somewhat jumbled, sudden transitions complicated things. Each page also felt slow and lengthy, featuring unnecessary details and dialogue that did not move the story along.

Early on, I truly thought I hated the FMC, Ellea. There is something to be said for character development and making unlikeable characters likeable (think Nesta Archeron, Dianna Martinez, or The Heirs).
While I’m always one for a villain era—I support women’s rights AND wrongs—early Ellea is abrasive and reckless, but the attitude feels forced.

Once the setting shifts and we meet her love interest, Rosier ‘Ros,’ Ellea feels more natural. But I still wonder if she became more palatable as a character or if Ros’s presence kept me entertained enough on its own….Because Ros? The lumberjack silver fox of a demon?! The reluctant princeling? He carries this book. And I’m not even talking about his contribution to the smut; he is simply a balanced, complex character.

Of note, many of the early love interests are indistinguishable. I’m certain this is intentional as it sets up Ellea’s relationship with Ros, but I wanted to flag it for fellow readers.

In terms of plot, there is so much to love. But unfortunately, it is weighed down by the writing style and the predictability. It’s a lot of hidden in plain sight meets prophecy and more. Even the cliffhanger felt less than surprising….

But this is far from a bad debut; if anything, it reminds me of Gild. It’s a bumpy ride at the beginning, but the rest of the journey will be smooth. Ultimately, Tricky Magic—like many other releases of late (TA6 and KBB, to name two)—suffers from a reader problem. Yep, I’m putting the onus on myself. I had certain expectations, and whether it was due to the marketing or the lack of critical (note I did not say negative or cruel) reviews, I went it with a lot of anticipation and my own ideas.

What I stand firm in is the fact the author worked incredibly hard to republish the first book to address previous editing concerns. Hence, grammar/syntax does not factor into my rating. She’s also remarketed the series with new covers and worked tirelessly to help bring new readers into the world she created. For that, I am going to press on. And I am hopeful about what Tricky Princess has in store.

Meh.

I personally felt like Tricky Magic was good, but it read like fan fiction.

I liked the characters and their personalities and how the main female lead didn't only insinuate having healthy relationships/partners before the male lead, but also the partners were seen on-page. Typically, if a previous relationship is seen on page before the hero/heroine, the S.O. turns out to be a jerk or is villainized or something bad in order to get them out of the way.

That being said, Isaac was iffy enough to make Ellea push him away, and Luke and Aidan had very, very little personality or descriptions. I think Luke had a tattoo, but otherwise, they could have been faceless, shapeless characters and I would have been none the wiser.

Once Ellea meets Ros, the characters are developed more and actually have a described body. The spice was very spicy and very nice, no matter where or when, but I had issues with the worldbuilding.

I thought that Tricky Magic was a fanfiction. The world would have already been developed in the original series, which is why there isn't much detailing the world and towns and people or the various magic and what other types of creatures exist, etc. The readers would already know because, well, it's a fanfiction based on something that already has the details. That's why the only things the author needed was the characters and their stories.

The style felt like a debut novel as well. I mean, it is one (right?) but it was easy to tell. There were too many periods and sentences ending too early when they could have been connected. It read almost jerky(ily?). I'm the type to ramble in one sentence and go too far, but I would always pause and try to connect some of the sentences so they would flow better.

Overall, I wasn't too impressed with Tricky Magic. I didn't think there was too much connecting me to the story or the characters, and if I have time I might pick up the next one, but until then, I'm not really feeling it.

Erotic Romance

So, the blurb and advertising for this book was right up my alley. Dark magic, handsome hunter, paranormal atmosphere, etc.
However 🤚
This fell flat in way too many ways. At first, yeah, it went well! Seemed to have a good set up, then it just went downhill. There was no flow to the 'barely there plot', no character development, all the side characters seemed the same, and the only reason our couple like each other is because they're both hot. Points for shadow hands though 😜
I have no problem with character driven books, but the characters have to be interesting, and they just weren't 😬

DNF at 31%.
I’m sorry, but this book is a disaster. The writing screams to be edited, it’s like I was reading a draft and not a finished book.
It contains a lot of unnecessary details and dialogues such as:

“Ros! How are you today?”
“Not bad, Agatha. How are you?”
“Good, good. […]”

Even whole chapters could have been omitted tbh.
The world building is vague. All we know is that it’s been 328 years since the world learnt about vampires, witches, werewolves, etc. but Harry Potter books still exist. The words “topside”, “court”, “supernaturals” keep being thrown at a reader without any explanation.
The heroine is a sex positive witch. Cool. But even though polygamy is a usual thing among witches, she’s still despised and slutshamed for sleeping with three men. Again, no explanation given. Speaking of those men, they share one personality, I couldn’t say who was who.
I barely got to 5% of the book when the first smut scene happened, but it felt mechanical - no feelings, just weird word choices. The next one wasn’t any better.
You can clearly see that it’s L.L. Campbell’s first book, there are a lot of mistakes that could have been avoided (and don’t get me started with the heroine describing her appearance while looking in the mirror). I hope her next works will be better.
Unfortunately, I can’t find anything worth finishing this book.

"Magic is such a tricky thing. Powers are an extension, not something you force."

Ellea is a witch who has inherited trickster magic from her parents - an uncontrollable and chaotic branch of magic that the rest of her fellow witches fear. She is an outsider in her own community and even though she does her best not to let all the scornful looks and abuse get to her, it does. Her Uncle Felix and Nana love her and try to help her master her powers, but when Ellea starts to feel overwhelmed and her nightmares worsen, she escapes to her family's lake house in a small quiet town - and there she meets Ros, a fellow supernatural who wields fire and shadows. And things start to change for the better and for the worst.

I came across Tricky Magic on Bookstagram and I'm so glad I decided to abandon my March TBR to read it. It was addicting from start to finish and I feel like I was able to sink into L. L. Campbell's urban fantasy world full of witches, demons, wolvens and vampires. I really liked this supernatural world as it was a modern society where mortals were aware of supernatural creatures and they sort of co-existed and lived amongst one another. A lot of fantasy worlds tend to lean in the opposite direction, and this sort of reminded me of Sarah J. Maas' Crescent City series.

I loved Ellea - I thought she was so badass and hardcore, but also soft. She is a total bookworm and I'm guessing she would love BookTok because she's a romance reader. She experiences a lot of hate from fellow witches because of her powers and because of her parents which creates a lot of angst. I really love reading about a character learning about their magic, learning to control it and use it. I really liked her! Tricky Magic is dual perspective (which I love!) and Ros is the other. Gaining insight into his life, his thoughts and feelings really added to the story. I thought, at times, Ros was a little too 'possessive alpha male' for my liking, however, I did find him to be interesting, and I adored the banter between him and Ellea. I see this as a sort of enemies-to-lovers romance and Campbell wrote some chef's kiss witty banter. I feel like the only thing that let this book down for me was the lack of 'plot' until 80% in and a lack of world-building. Stuff was touched on but not developed and it felt rushed at times.

Overall, a very steamy and sexy paranormal romance and I'll definitely be reading the sequel, Tricky Princess later in the year.

I went into this fantasy romance because of the hype on bookstagram; I'd seen it there for a while now, and since the second book is on the way, I went in with high expectations.

So, were my expectations fully met?

Unfortunately, no.

First and foremost, the writing; while it was easy to get into, I couldn't imagine or be convinced that it was set in a modern setting, despite the historical fantastical world it conveyed. In my opinion, the writing simply gave it that impression.

Furthermore, with the crumbs provided by the novel, there is a lack of world-building and magical system depth. One of the reasons this novel felt so flat to me was this section.

Regarding the characters and romance; despite liking the characters, particularly Ellea, I would say that the romance and the smutty scene between Ellea and Ros were not something I enjoyed. To be honest, I couldn't feel the chemistry and felt like all they had was something purely lustful.

I also felt that the plot was both nonexistent and present but not particularly moving, notably in the last 30% of the novel, and the appearance of characters there was extremely anticlimactic for me.

Overall, I believe this could have been improved in a variety of ways, beginning with a solid world-building, consistent plot, and magical system. I think I'd read the second book just to find out what happened next. 2.75⭐

Ellea is our female main character, a one of a kind witch with immense power of illusion and creation that she’s terrified of. Her life is filled with an abusive childhood of her corrupt parents taking advantage of her powers, and her fellow witches hating her for what she is. Unsure of herself and her future, she takes a break from her current life to stay in the cottage she grew up with her uncle and nana after her parents were imprisoned. It’s there that she meets Ros, a (very broody, snarky, and rugged) demon prince whose been living topside for a thousand years eliminating evil supernatural creatures to protect others. They try to navigate this immediate pull to each other that they can’t explain, while also trying to figure out what Hell seems to be plotting with the increased number of demon and vampire attacks happening. Can they work together, without killing the other, to stop chaos and destruction before it strikes??

This book was so damn addicting. I fell in loooove with the magic system first—witches, demons, wolven, and ESPECIALLY the familiars. I feel like we don’t get enough stories that include witches and their familiars! And then I fell for Ros and Ellea next.

Their banter is so so beautiful. They are both equally stubborn, ruthless, sarcastic and powerful, and I just loved seeing them try to get the upper hand. Ellea is a very strong, independent, crass woman and I loved that Ros embraced all of it. He never wanted her to be something she wasn’t, and he was so in awe of everything she is while still being the aggressive, domineering, morally grey male we all lose our minds for. He can be confident and an asshole, yet pensive, loving, and thoughtful. He was so unbelievably attractive inside and out.

Ellea is such a complex character. She comes off as this wicked, sharp-tongued creature without a care in the world. But we get to see that she’s actually incredibly insecure. I loved watching her come into her powers and find herself in this.

Also low key the spice in this book is PHENOMENAL….. like 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶. In case you didn’t know.

The ending scene was INTRIGUING TO SAY THE LEAST. I need book 2 immediately.

Things I thought could’ve been improved:

I just wish the storytelling felt a little more cohesive—it seemed to be all over the place at times. There’s a lot of jumping around when I want more information and plot. I wanted a little more set up for the series as a whole. Because YES obviously I went in for the smut, but the author made the plot so freaking interesting that I also wanted more out of it 🤣

Honestly I think all my hopes and dreams will be answered in the next book.

SPOILERS NOW!!!!!
!!!
!!!
!!!
!!!
!!!
!!!
!!!
!!!
!!!
!!!

What the hell was up with Isaac?? Why did he get so psycho and aggressive? I for sure thought this was going to come up later… (maybe it still will?)

Belias’s whole character felt so strange this first book. I feel like there’s a lot more to him, but we didn’t really get to see it? I’m thinking we’re definitely going to learn more about him, but the way he was utilized in this could’ve been better! Like what happened to him when Ros “shadowed” him away after the confrontation with Ellea?? What was the whole point of the third cabin on the lake he was thinking of buying?

I wish we got more of Ros and Ellea finding out about each others background, and more about the bond they share. Especially with Ros - we didn’t really get to know anything about his life which I felt was kinda weird for a main character, especially with a dual POV.

And honestly I wanted more information about Ellea’s parents. WHY WERE THEY ARRESTED? WHAT ARE THEIR GOALS? Like we know absolutely nothing about why they are so evil, only that they just ARE.

Billy and Garm are also kind of a mystery to me. I’m curious as to the point of Billy having a human form, and why it was important that Ros saw her in it. And why Garm hangs around Ros.

The scene with her parents confronting her felt very anticlimactic. Why didn’t they just take her then and there? It felt very obvious that they easily could’ve since no one seemed to be able to stop them, so I don’t really understand it.

UPDATE AFTER READING REVISED VERSION:

Unfortunately for me, the new changes still didn’t make the first part of this book better than the OG. I think it’s just the setup in general, it feels very out of place than the rest of the book!

I get what the author is doing and trying to set up the world, but it just feels like it could be done throughout the book instead of within that first part.

Like we get to see that as a whole, the witch community hates and fears Ellea. Except we don’t really get the background yet as to why, or how 3 men end up loving her anyways. Or what her nana and uncle do about it, just that they are supportive. But like… how??

Regardless I am absolutely intrigued for book 2 and can’t wait to find out what happens!

I felt this was every stereotypical romantasy trope rolled into one book, with little to no context, and very little closure.

This book is a great start to a paranormal fantasy, setting the scene and characters for the series we meet Ellea a trickster witch that is driven out of her home, abandoned and seeking a way to control her unpredictable magic.

The storyline for this book is good with a grumpy shadow magic love interest, less enemies to lovers and more annoyance into lover kind of romance that has some good back and forth and some very steamy shadow play!

A great start to what I assume will be a steamy series, cliffhanger warning for the end of this book, you will want book 2 ready to go!

2 🌶

SHADOW FREAKIN DADDY OK! 😮‍💨🤌🏼

I’m obsessed with Ellea & Ros. Not only that but I’m also in love with the side characters.

I wasn’t really sure what all was going on with the plot at first but ooooh the plot twist at the end was so good!

I am diving right into book 2!

Y'all this book. THIS BOOK! I had the privilege of reading an arc of the revised version and you guys! Oh my god. Lexi did such a good job. I loved the original, but the changes Lexi made! The story flows better and they just brought this 'oomph' to the story. I don't know how to explain it. Also side note, I wholeheartedly blame Lexi for my 'shadow play' addiction😅😏

Ros is the dark haired and broody man of your dreams and Ellea is the smutty book loving badass that we all want to be. I love Ros and Ellea so much. Lexi does such a good job at fully flushing out her characters. Don't even get me started on the side characters😭 I almost always gravitate towards them in books. I just love getting to see the MCs interacting with other people. And Tricky Magic's side characters! Oml! Everytime Sam was on page I laughed. And Luke and Aiden!!!🥹 They are so damn cute and the way they interact with/treat Ellea😭 They're like golden retriever boys, but with a little 🔥🌶️spice sprinkled on top. I am so damn excited for Tricky Princess.

If you like witches; demons, and all kinds of other creatures, magic, dark and brooding MMCs, book loving badass FMCs, and plenty of delicious spice😏, you'll love this book.

Tropes:
Fated mates
Grumpy/broody love interest
Badass female MC with magic
I love you, but I shouldn't
Funny & loveable side kicks/characters
Cliffhanger

TWs:
Emotional abuse
Emotional manipulation
Sexually explicit content
Attempted sexual assault (chapter 16)
Violence
Death

witches, magic, demons and sexy scenes that will curl your toes. Before I get into it let’s all appreciate how absolutely gorgeous this book is 😍.

Tricky Magic is a debut from the wonderful and talented Lexi. This book is a perfect example of a slow burn, mature character who are over 25, a well constructed magical and supernatural society and a sassy powerful MC that is easy to like.

I really like the addiction of mature topics of mental health and some trauma, it felt raw and real and added to the Ellea’s chatacter. I loved Ellea, she is a woman that knows what she wants and isn’t apologetic for it. Weather it’s a foursome with 3 other guys or to be left alone curled up with a smutty dragon shifter book. I also loved her power it was unique and very interesting.

Now Ros….🥵🥵🥵. That man was sexy as sin, a little possessive, a little protective and very very sinful 😈. I also likes his chapters, the fact that we got to see how his personality progressed while around Ellea. It was very well written. And don’t get me started on his shadow magic…he was very creative with it 😈

I can’t say much that won’t spoil a lot. So I’ll just say this. Demons, Magic, Witches and smut, it’s a perfect balance for a great fantasy book. And ya all need to read it!

This book? Absolutely devoured. Like, take-my-soul-and-leave-me-grinning levels of good.

Ellea is the kind of sharp-tongued, take-no-BS heroine I live for – chaotic, powerful, and a little unhinged in the best way. And Ros? Shadow Daddy Supreme. Not just a title — he actually uses his shadows, and yes, it’s as hot as it sounds.

The chemistry? Flaming.
The banter? Unmatched.
The vibes? Witchy, wild, and so unbothered by your mortal rules.

Oh, and let’s talk about the queer rep – the side characters are giving personality, sass, and full-spectrum queer excellence. The found family dynamic? Inject it straight into my veins.

This is the kind of fast-paced, fantasy chaos that grabs you by the throat and whispers, “You’re not sleeping tonight.” And honestly? I didn’t want to.

Spicy, supernatural, and stupidly addictive. Time to immediately go start book 2.

And here I am, again, happy but pissed because I found an amazing book BUT I have to wait for the second one.

Tricky Magic was a really fun, fast paced and amazing read. Ellea is a great FMC, sarcastic, powerful and true to herself. Ros is everything you can dream of. Literally swooning over him.

The characters are easy to like, the plot is actually quite good and it’s an easy read. The spice is also so, SO good. Long live shadow play 😏🥴

Where do I even begin to write this review?! I've been here since the start. I was lucky enough to be an alpha, beta, and ARC reader for this work of magic. Thank you, L for trusting your work with me and allowing me to get lost in your Tricky Magic world.

My love for Ellea, Ros, Devon, Sam, Garm, and Billy is endless and I cannot wait for everyone in the book world to be entirely consumed in this witchy world. The banter between Ros and Ellea is chefs kiss and I love the chemistry that is brewed as the story develops. There is so much magic in this world that every paranormal reader will love. I LOVED the twist at the very beginning of this and it left me pretty damn speechless.

Wolven, vampires, demon, princes, witches and so much more supernatural entities are unraveled in this story! Do yourself a favor and add this to your TBR! I'm going to go ahead and SCREAM that we need book 2 ASAP, because I need to know if our Princeling is going to save the day.

“So many things are wrong with me,” he said in a way that showed he was fully okay with that statement. “If you’re lucky, you will get to learn all of them.”

Reread of TM:
1st time - 4.5 ⭐
2nd time (Revised Edition) - 5 ⭐

Tricky Magic is dark paranormal and mythological romance, that features supernatural creatures, great magic system, dealings with trauma, captivating main and secondary characters, and steamy ohh so steamy smut! You will unlock a new kink, my friend! 🔥

After Ellea escapes from a city where mortals and supernaturals hate her for who she is, she takes up a residence in cabin, that is owned by her family. In the small town of Glenover, Ellea will find friends and foes, learn new revelations, go to a wolven barbecue and read a lot of smutty books. Oh, and she will meet a grumpy, mysterious and sexy lumberjack - Rosier. In truth, they have given up all hope of a happy future due to the fact of who they are and what is required of them. Until they met each other.

I love that Lexi created a great balance between spice and plot. There's tension, struggles, humor, unapologetic desires, trauma, chemistry, witty banter and characters are multilayered. It really was a page turner. With updated version, we get to have clearer and more in depth story than before, that is told by dual pov.

“Fears evolve and grow, welcoming another. One whose power will balance yours in destruction. You feed his fire as he feeds your chaos. You will turn worlds upside down.”

We get to meet a witch Ellea - a rare trickster and seer witch lineage. Enjoys latte, has open relationships with 3 partners and has a hilarious and sassy familiar Billy. She has a lot of trauma and struggles to unpack, so you will get to see her journey to self discovering and evolving so someone much stronger that she realizes. I loved to see how she grows as a character and I can't wait to see what's in store for her in book two.

And of course, sinfully sexy Rosier - a swoon worthy and shadow wielding mountain of a man, who enjoys reading, swimming naked and chopping wood. He's a a demon witch princeling ;) Also has a hilarious familiar Garm. Jokes aside, Ros has his own dark past to get over and we will only be able to sense a small portion of it throughout book one. As I am currently reading book two, I can say this - you will learn the dark and sad revelations that Ros didn't share before.

The chemistry between Ellea and Ros is tense and steamy, but it does not take away focus from the plot. Garm and Billy are my fav familiars ever! I love every encounter they have with each other. Sam and Devon - we need their own book Lexi 👌

What you will find in this sexy story:
▪️ From '' I'd Kill You! '' to '' I'd Kill For You! ''
▪️ Interesting magic system
▪️ Slow burn romance
▪️ Shadowplay (new kink alert)
▪️ Dark topics
▪️ Powerful, badass and body positive heroine
▪️ Broody, hot and shadow wielding hunk
▪️ Delicious banter
▪️ Funny side characters
▪️ Power struggles
▪️ Mystery about visions / nightmares
▪️ Mean cliffhanger :D
