A fast and practical visual storytelling method that puts a powerful new toolkit into the hands of leaders, innovators, salespeople, teachers and anyone else who needs to quickly make an impact on increasingly distracted audiences. The Pop-Up Pitch is a radical new approach to help you create the perfect presentation, combining three key elements of persuasive storytelling-simple pictures, clear words, and powerful emotions-that together motivate audiences to pay attention, learn something new, and make effective decisions. The Pop-Up Pitch weaves together the latest insights on visual cognition, behavioral economics, and classic story structures in an easy-to-learn and inspiring storytelling algorithm. In this new era of remote, work and online presenting, it delivers powerful and persuasive outcomes for time-limited professionals dealing with complex ideas, attention-deficit audiences, and the evolving challenges of modern meetings.
The Pop-Up Pitch by Dan Roam surprised me. It surprised me due to its simplicity. It surprised me due to its clarity. It surprised me due to its usefulness. It encourages us to create easy-to-follow, highly informative and persuasive seven-minute 10-page presentations which catch and hold the attention of our listeners. And the best part is it can all be accomplished within two hours.
You may be asking yourself, when will you need a seven-minute pitch? I asked myself the very same question. But I soon realized many of my presentations and workshops can be divided into seven-minute segments. In fact, according to many sources, you risk losing audience attention when it takes longer than 18 minutes to present and conclude new information to an audience. With this in mind I eagerly read this book, hoping for tricks and tidbits to make my presentation writing quicker and more effective. The author challenges us to look at our seven-minute pitches as episodes, stories in which a challenge is presented which hooks the audience and then is skillfully solved by the presenter. Simple, clear, and useful advice.
But the challenge isn’t just any challenge. It’s a challenge that will create an emotional and intellectual pivot for your audience. In order to write the compelling episode effectively and impactfully, you’ve got to have a reliable roadmap of where you want to go and how you’re going to get there. And for that, you’re going to have to read the book.
This book is great if you are a teacher, trainer, salesperson, manager, negotiator, or someone who simply wants to be more persuasive. While the book is a bit repetitive, and it may not be reinventing the figurative “wheel” it’s straightforward practical advice that can easily be implemented by us all. I would have given the book five stars, but it was impossible to see many of the graphics in the kindle version. They do not enlarge, so for that reason, I deducted one star. Hopefully, this gets fixed as this is a great little guide!
Time will fly so fast 😆
It doesn’t matter your business or work; the reality is everyone has to persuade and pitch to get what they want. Dan Roan gives readers a straightforward and creative way to convince others in THE POP-UP PITCH.
As Roan writes in the opening pages, “Think of this as a persuasive cookbook. You re the check, and you have a delicious new idea to share. Your audience is your guests, and they’re hungry for a happier way to work, live and be successful. Your job is to share with them a short, inspiring, and memorable presentation that will show how your idea will help them, and then motivate them to act.” (Page 2)
THE POP-UP PITCH is well-written and gives readers a variety of examples for use. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
I am a huge fan of Dan Roam’s work. “The back of the napkin” is still one of my favourite productivity books, and one that I recommend to new consultants (and indeed to anybody struggling to get the message across) a regular basis.
Somehow, I had missed the publication of “the pop-up pitch“ and was excited by the subtitle, “the two hour creative sprint to the most persuasive presentation of your life!“
Against the promise of its predecessor, and this enticing subtitle, I am afraid the book does not deliver. However, that does not mean that you should not read it! As always, Roam provides a simple framework and easy to follow guidance to creating a storytelling narrative for pretty much any flavour of pitch presentation. His focus on imagery and simple messaging is spot-on.
I would like to see more comprehensive examples, but it is an easy read with powerful takeouts.
Love this book. I participated in Dan's Napkin Academy program as he wrote and then published the book. It was a pretty amazing experience to watch someone create a book about creating a persuasive pitch then to watch him use that same framework to get the book sold and published. I used what I learned from Dan to create and pitch my own book, 'MAP. MEASURE. MOVE.' Dan's presentation and storytelling skills are the gift that keeps on giving.
Interesting concept to improve one’s public speaking and presentation skills. I am looking forward to implementing this technique for my next big presentation. I would imagine that this book is even more effective in a physical format rather than the digital format with which I read.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Fantastic use of my time. Dan's Pop-up Pitch Sprint is just what I needed to take all the significance I thought I needed to get things just right. After two hours, or less if you're really crunched for time, you'll get what you need to tell a better story. That's a life learning skill well worth having. Thanks for the easy to follow breadcrumbs.
Excellent and practical advice from Dan Roam on visual representation of things that matter. Long time fan of his work going back to "Napkin" I found "Pop-up Pitch" do a bit more narrowly focused and incorporated a template and methodology - extremely prescriptive in nature. Which was, in truth, very effective. Good practical advice on visual messaging and how to do it right.
Simple. Focused. Helpful. A unique appeal. Doesn't really apply to my type of sales, but if you regularly need to make presentations to win over a team to a new idea or direction this book could be helpful.
Another great book by Dan! It has a very conversational tone and very easy to follow. You'll get the most out of it if you do the exercises as you read through it.
A very interesting and useful tool. This book is really a knowledge digest Of the other Dan’s books. I enjoyed and take advantage Of the pop-up pitch technique. I used it, and believe me, it Works. And works soectacular.
