When entering the world of my books. Dive in with an open mind and heart. Leave your expectations at the cover and go on the journey with my characters. I hope it’s one you can enjoy.🤎
In 2020 the literary world was introduced to the infamous Porter clan. These brothers are an acquired taste, you either love them or hate them. For the readers that love them, Nina decided to bless us with a prequel about their dad, Hassan. This very limited-edition story was only released in paperback or hardcover edition and if you weren't in the few that got it, you'll never be able to get it. The author did it this way because of the harsh topics this book touches on: abuse (physical, mental, emotional, verbal and sexual), child abuse, death, drug use, excessive violence, explicit underage content, extremely vulgar language, homophobia, mental illness, sex with a minor, self-injurious behavior and suicide. If you've read any of the previous books connected to these characters, none of these topics should surprise you or offend you. It's 571 pages of rawness, but once readers are finished, they'll have a better understanding of the characters they love so much.
When the story starts, Hassan is a teen that just lost his father, Kyle. His mother, Hanifa, hates him because of the sins of his father. "I hate you because you came from him and anything that man ever gave me, was poison. Ruined my fuckin' life!" Instead of being consoled by his only living parent, he's shunned, not even being able to grieve his father correctly. At a young age, Hassan is forced to live and survive on his own. That is until Erica, who readers know as Mucci, comes along and devotes her entire life to him. Erica wasn't Hassan's first choice of spending his days with, but her loyalty to him is what forced him to keep her around. "He forced himself to deal with Erica because being alone felt like a suffering he couldn't take." Not only is Hassan dealing with the loss of his dad and the rejection of his mother, but he also has mental issues that prevents him from being classified as normal. As the story goes on readers will see that there's nothing normal about Hassan or the way he lives.
During his life span Hassan collected an assortment of women, inevitably turning the worst ones into the mothers of his children. "All y'all bitches the same. He glimmer, don't he? He shine? It all look good when you runnin' after what you don't know. Y'all should listen to your lil parents and stay out the streets cause you gon' run across niggas like Hassan that make you wish you never even existed." Erica, Oceana, Rasheeda, Adrianna, and Demetria had one thing in common, and it wasn't their love for Hassan, it was their resemblance to Hanifa, the woman that started Hassan's disdain for women. "The older Hassan got the more he saw his mother in each of his baby mommas. He didn't know if that was an unknowingly intention behind his selection in women, but it was there in the way they felt about their children and Hassan couldn't stand a bitch that didn't fuck with her own kid. It was about the same as spitting in your face to him and he wasn't having that shit." They were terrible mothers, and the only thing that saved them from being discarded by Hassan were his children. They all resided under one roof, creating unimaginable drama for days on end. "My kids gotta be together, O and unfortunately, I have a habit of fuckin' damaged ass hoes."
Nina walks us through the birth of every Porter: Kyle, Lake, Rushon, Avant, Demetrius and Dayvion. Their upbringing and the many lessons that come with being a man ill-equipped to raise four boys on his own. "One day shit gon' happen and you'll hear my voice in the back of your mind, remember a time where I told you what to do in a certain situation if you ever find yourselves lost." Readers get to see Hassan grow right along with his kids, loving them the only way he knew how. They'll also see Hassan in love, a man that felt he never deserved love. "I love you too. You keep my head above water even when I think I'm drowning. You gave me Lake. My everything, O." We'll see why the boys have such terrible relationships with their mothers. And most importantly we'll see the evolution of Mucci. "'Listen,' Hassan snatched her back. 'We for life, ard?' You pushed your way into my fuckin' space now you got it. You got what you been chasin' all these years... I... I don't trust nobody else... you all I have.'"
This book was wild. But as stated previously, after reading the Front St. series, nothing was really shocking, to me at least. The story and the characters were layered. Generational curses, soul ties, addiction, violence, mental illness. All issues that plague many families, but rarely anyone ever discusses. This book was top tier as far as entertainment, but also left me feeling sad. Sad that it was over and sad for the characters. I even felt bad for Mucci for a split second. I enjoyed every single page. I couldn't read fast enough and was reading too fast all in the same breath. When I started the book, I was indifferent about Hassan, I didn't love or hate him. But by the end, I loved that poor tortured soul. "How can the dead be truly dead when they live in the souls of those who are left behind?" But there's light at the end of every tunnel.
Hassan birthed 5 of the realist niggas you ever gone meet. Period. Love my boys. Don’t shit move without Hassan approval. It’s forever gone be who 👀 when you bring up something Hassan forgets 🌚 Erica is one of the most pathetic characters I’ve ever read about. It’s time to dig her ass up I don’t think her death was enough! My fave babies was sav and lake 🥲🥲🥲 you definitely got to understand Hassan more and his boys. Hassan may have did a lot of dirt and wrong. He may have slept with everyone mama including mine and yours but forever gone be right about him loving his kids. What a bond to break him dying was the most painful thing for his children. They didn’t have a mother’s love always but always had Hassan’s.
It took me a year to read this book because I honestly wasn’t ready for this story to end. Nothing prepares you for How raw and dark Hassan’s story is. I felt like I was invading their privacy. Hassan was a real nigga despite his own mental, emotional and physical abuse. Through it all he was able to single handedly raise 5 men. Hassan handled life the best way he saw fit, regardless of what anyone thought. I’ve never wanted to hug characters as bad as I want to hug the Porters. I really can’t sum this book up, it’s an experience 🖤
This book was needed and the author owe us nothing! This book was everything and in so many ways confirmed all that we knew about our beloved Porter brothers. Mucci is a horrible person and deserves to rot in hell for all that she did, obsession or not. I am grateful to have met the conflicted man name Hasaan who never had his mother's love but somehow loved anyway in his own way. His love for his sons and Oceana was relentless and unwavering. When he laid eyes on his daughter, my heart was full because he was so gentle. While society would mark him as a monster, the truth of the matter Hasaan represents a portion of our community who is misunderstood but underneath lies a man who longs for love and gives it in the way that works best for him. This author's pen game is unmatchable. She has a permanent fan in me.
I really want to take the time to write a full out review, but honey… my heart. When I say I CANNOT stand Mucci. It’s like, I already knew how Hassan’s story would end, but it’s still kind of heartbreaking. Especially for Lake. This book spoke of everything we already learned in the On Us Series, however, you do get a greater understanding of the dynamic of Hassan’s relationship with his baby mamas and also the boys’ dynamic with their moms. Of course, Nina is such a great author, and I inhaled this book as fast as I could but life slowed me down. 5 stars
This was one of the best books I’ve read. The reading world was definitely waiting on this story and Nina did not disappoint us. Reading Hassan story is what we needed after following the lives of his sons. The longest book I’ve read in a long time with 500+ pages and I didn’t want to put the book down at all!
Hassan was a damaged child that turned into a damaged man but he made sure his kids knew he loved and would do anything for them. Hassan was certified and raised 5 certified niggas. I absolutely loved learning about the darkness that is Hassan Porter. I really wish Hassan would have opened his eyes about Mucci but all of that dirt caught up to her in the end. Nina did her thing on this story. She never disappoints!
A must read, if you read the Porter Boys series starting with Front Street Porter, you need to read about the man who started it all. Hassan was a motherfucker, but he loved his sons with every ounce of love he possessed.
I would first like to agree with Nina that you do not have/need to read this book because Hassan’s story is told throughout the other books in the series. However, this book helps readers truly understand why each Porter man behaves the way he does. We understand why Lake is so cold and protective over his brothers and why Lake’s word is law. We understand why Avant is a crybaby. We understand why Wreck has middle child syndrome. We understand why Sav is so protective over Dem and why their bond is the way that it is. We understand the history behind Dem’s mental health diagnosis and how that has affected his relationships. We also get a deeper understanding of the love between Hassan and Oceana, and how making a child from love is different from lust. We get a look at Lake before the incident and how it was handled. Although Hassan’s methods were harsh, those boys, and O, were his heart in human form ❤️
This book was everything it needed to be! 76 chapters of good reading! This is my favorite read of 2020 so far. I’ve fallen in love with these characters even more. Hassan was something else! Oceana is still my favorite, after Lake of course. Erica should have been tortured a little more in On Us after reading more of the backstory.
What can I say....I love the Porter family flaws and all. I really hate how Hassan chose to end his life and that there was really no one in his corner to help him heal and get the help he needed. Mucci lit a fire of rage and disgust in me to no end. Its 4ever F*ck Mucci. I hate she got away with the things she did as long as she did. Can't wait for Nina to drop her next gift!❤
Let me first say what address you Nina. What a job well done. It took me longer than it should have to read this because of the processing I had to do between the scenes/chapters and for that emotional release I truly appreciate. Even in the dark it made those light moments so big.
TO THE MF CHARACTERS…
We gon address baby mamas 3-5 as one. Cause they all was some BIRDSSSS. Straight birds son. I’m so blew because if they cared HALF as much about they kids they could’ve got an OUNCE of what they hated Oceana for. But that’s neither here nor there cause they was who the fuck they was and that’s all they ever gon be. BIRDS.
Oceana?! The real heart of the porters if there ever was. Through her PURE love for her son she made the heart that Hassan had and I don’t care what nobody said. He loved her down to her dirty draws!! And it was beautiful to see. To witness. I just wish she could’ve been a tad stronger. Used that pull she had on his heart to get control of the situation in a way only she could. She had and deserved all the power that he gave to the one I’m not even gon name.
Hanifa…if I could’ve went through pages and strangled a bitch. She was first and right behind her that h** I’m not gon name.
Now last but never in the least. Hassan Porter. Such a complicated misunderstood man. A man who really needed nothing but love and nurturing and since he couldn’t get he gave it to the ones he knew would deserve it in the only way he could. His only downfall will be birds for women he wanted too much from. His mother and them birds he impregnated. ALL of em. I just wish out of everyone he read thru he would’ve read thru Erica. His BIGGEST downfall. She straight up tortured our guy into his own downfall. This how I knew I was toxic though cause the whole time I’m sitting here telling myself I would’ve took my beatings and still talked all my truth. Busted lip and all!! I hate that he lost a battle so many do without the proper support, without the proper Safe places. But what a man he was. What a legacy he left behind. Truly truly one of my favorite characters I hated to mourn. I appreciate how much light you brought to his battle.
And still we not even gon address the one I ain’t mention cause she got what she deserved and that still wasn’t enough in my eyes.
Lord, this thing took me through ALL the feels! Hassan🤦🏾♀️ I promise you I could see him in so many men. He loved those boys, and he did what he could to raise them in a way that would make them successful. I love that he instilled love in them. I love that he helped them understand that if they had nobody else they had each other.
Gosh… this was such an amazing read.
I almost wish I had read this one before all the other books, but I’m also glad that I read this last because it just made everything else I read prior make all the sense in the world.
His baby moms… terrible. All of them! But I do still hold a soft spot for Oceana in my heart.
Mucci… 👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾 Like sis🤦🏾♀️. She was just a bad seed. 😒 I never felt sorry for her and I still don’t. She has to be one of the best villain characters I’ve read in a book. Nina showed out with her. Like she did way too much to get so little.
This book was a great ride. The highs and the lows were well worth every minute I spent on these pages. Unfortunately this is a limited edition read. So if you have it and haven’t read it bust it out. If you don’t have it. I’m sorry in advance.
When we were first introduced to the Porters, we learned of a hood legend named Hassan. A single father of six boys and one girl, he ruled his home with an iron fist. This is his story.
There is so much to unpack in this book. First, Hassan fathered his sons the way that his father, Kyle raised him. Second, he was too young to realize that most, if not all, of his five baby mothers suffered from Post-partum Depression, and they were trifling as heck. Lastly, I never thought I could hate (strong word) Mucci more than I did in this book. Murder was too good for her. From day one, she was jealous of Oceana's place in the hierarchy.
Once I ripped the plastic off of this treasure, I couldn't put it down. The storyline flowed, character development was A+ and the numerous plot twists were amazing! My favorite character goes to Oceana and the least favorite was Mucci.
If you were fortunate enough to get your hands on this book and haven't read it yet…PLEASE GO DO SO!
Finally getting to read this, I can honestly say it puts so much into perspective. It made everything make sense, had me looking at everyone differently, and gave me a deeper appreciation for the true character growth of all Hassan’s boys in the later books. Hassan did the best he could with what he knew. His life was rough, and that ending… goodness gracious. This was definitely an emotional read. I’ll definitely binge the series soon to get the full picture again. So heavy, but after Front Street Porter, nothing truly shocks me. I’ll just say Avery really made a difference in everyone’s life..
Being that I love the porters this book was a must and I’m happy I decided to take that leap of faith to purchase. This book filled me up with the family that I’ve grown to love. I loved seeing Hassan be a dad and understanding this relationship with his kids Vs. There’s with their dad. This was really good. But I knew that before I purchased lol.
Hassan-I had a love hate relationship with him the entire time. He started off as a bastard who was teaching his sons some crazy ways, but once you began to understand him then a lot of his antics made sense. Mucci, I still did not like that heifer.
Reading this from Hassan's pov was wild! He went through so much. My disdain for Erica/Mucci intensified!! Hassan was spreading that thang around freely. His mammy Hanifa was just that, a mammy. I wish he had taken her out.
Took me literally 10 days to read this because it was A LOT to process for just one person 🥹! Nina does not disappoint ever! I wish everyone could read Hassan’s story because it definitely explains the background of how it all started! Just know that Hassan Porter was something else….
Man, this was such a deep but great read. If I thought I loved Lake and Dem, I should’ve prepared myself to fall for Hassan. No more words just five stars, ard!
I finished this book a few days ago. I am still not ok. This book is a limited addition and I am so grateful Nina (the author) put this book on sale one last time. I have never been so obsessed about a book in my life. The Porter family experience had me so invested, that I just had to read this book. While it was not necessary, to follow the trajectory of the story I am so excited to have had this back story. This is by far the BEST book I have ever read. I hate giving things the title of "BEST" because I read lots of books and there is always something different or better about each book. This book is all the hyped that it lived up to be. I loved watching the children grow up and understand how they became who they became. I was prepared to change my opinion on Hassan knowing that I was going to read his troubled background, but I didn't. In my opinion, he was a terrible person. However, I will say his parenting while most of his life lessons were trash, he loved those boys with everything he had and taught them how to love each other. This book made me cry ugly cry at the end, I knew how it ended, but the love affair that Oceania and Hassan had, was never fulfilled to their true destiny. I think if they had more time, they both could have been a strong unit loving each other and providing the boys more stability and nurturing. Oceania was a good soft side to Hassan's tough parenting. Lastly, Mucci deserved what she got and wished it happened sooner. She did so much, but her destroying that letter that Lake so desperately needed and still needs was the ultimate unforgivable sin. Lake and Oceania will never have the relationship they once had and that's on her, but Hassan's love and encouragement may have helped them get back on track and sooner. Oh and baby/younger Lake is so adorable!
