William and his friends have fought their way through a prison larger than any city they’ve encountered, avoiding enraged prisoners and diseased alike. And now they’re finally here. The south.
A new world.
A new start.
A new life.
And most important of all …
No diseased.
Save for the one that followed them through the prison’s south gates. Had they known, they would have made more of an effort to close them, but there were no diseased in the prison when they left.

Summary: William and his gang have faced danger, lost friends and all in the hope of finding somewhere to call home. After finding new friends some decide to stay behind in the prison while the rest press on. Their world is filled with unknown dangers and societies of the have and have nots. The gang thinks that at least they have left the diseased, or zombies, behind, but as the title says it ony takes one.
The gang arrives is the South and things don’t really look any better. Instead of diseased they find what the locals call vampires while the rest of the people live in towers. Back at the prison, Joni and her friends are struggling to stay alive against a hoard of diseased.
This is a fast paced story forcing the teams to stand together against overwhelming odds and it isn’t over yet!
Book 13 in this nail biting post apocalyptic survival series and I just cannot get enough of this thrilling and very scary journey our group of survivors are on. William, Matilda, Artan, Nick, Olga, Gracie and Hawk leave the prison complex on their way to the South, leaving Joni, Antonia and Ralph behind. However when they go over the prison wall what they find in the South is not what they expected. Have they gone from the frying pan into the fire? The land is as desolate as the one they had left behind, apart from the looming shining towers and the ragged shanty town homes in the plaza below. The towers were protected by soldiers who were heavily weaponised and they were all highly secured whilst the meadow was populated by thousands of vampires. Olga and Gracie drove a tank they had stolen into the garage of the towers thus gaining entry, whilst the rest of the group were captured by the vampires, who turns out were anything but. Joni in the meantime is doing her utmost to prove herself to her daughter, but selling herself short every time, feeling a failure whilst facing such horrible odds. The prison had been taken over by the diseased but Antonia sees in her mum a strong ally and a capable survivor which Joni really was. The people in the tower are greedy and abuse their power by manipulating and enslaving those they dare to label as vampires knowing full well what they were. When the diseased break into the South all hell is set loose as both the vampires and the tower people panic and scramble into action. Were our friends guilty of letting the diseased into the North? Well fingers were pointing at them even if they weren't and it was time to move on yet again. Phew another edge of the seat book with a horrible cliff-hanger ending, so onto book 14 please!
I personally didn't care for the prison storyline in the previous couple of books. I was ready for the series to come to an end and was skeptical about buying yet another BTW book. However, Book 13 branches out in some new and interesting story arcs and I enjoyed the book. These new story elements should be good for maybe one more book - two at most (I can only guess that Mr. Robertson is heading for 15 before concluding the series).
What I originally enjoyed about this series was the early plot that had our heroes living without technology and fighting terrifying "diseased" with primitive weapons through rubble and ancient, abandoned buildings. I love a good lost in the rubble story. Instead, we now have modern buildings with electricity and elevators, security cameras, wireless radio communication, fully automatic firearms, tanks, grenades, armed drones, video games, luxury indoor restrooms, etc. I am really hoping this series does not become just another "shoot em up" story where the main characters act like paramilitaries in a modern-like setting. The BTW universe has certainly come a long way from where it started in Edin.
Assuming we have another book or two before the end, the new story arcs should provide enough good material to get us to the end without "jumping the shark" too badly. That is, unless William and Matilda show up in a jet fighter or an aircraft carrier in which case I am done!
Not bad. I’m 13 books in now, so I guess that says something. I feel the characters are still a little immature after all this time. And the standard of living has been somewhat confusing since the beginning. The main group comes from the north, a place called Edin. Where they pretty much live in huts and when you turn 18? You’re drafted to become a soldier/ gladiator. The characters travel to the south, looking for a better way of life by the sea, and it turns out everything is high tech, and they may actually be in a worse place than where they came from. There’s still dirt poor people/ slaves and everyone is still trying to survive with the diseased roaming the lands. It’s just weird how one area is almost like it was a 100 years ago, and the other is like living in the Stone Age. I know I’ve left a lot out. This is my first review in this series. Just trying to condense it. I am looking forward to the next book, because overall these books have been a pretty good read. And as usual the ending is left with a cliffhanger lol.
I have really enjoyed this series and book 13 sees William, Matilda and crew dive into battles that involve more than the diseased, while Joni attempts to clear the prison enough to survive with her daughter...
This instalment focuses on entitlement, though, I suppose, this series has seen the few ‘at the top’ take everything, however, the ‘towers’ really do show the vast divide between the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’, which is disturbing and disgusting because it is like today’s world.
The story is filled with action and suspense, thoughts and feelings, with a great plot (divided between groups of characters) and a fantastic sense of place.
I like Joni the best because she is so strong after being through so much, and though thought of as ‘a little crazy’, her kindness and determination shine.
All the familiar characters are well-developed and fit well into story and I liked the fast-paced writing style.
This thirteenth episode of Beyond These Walls follows William, Matilda and their group as they pursue what they want to believe is a better place to live. Without providing any spoilers, I think I can safely say this group has an uncanny ability to be able to hop right out of the frying pan into the deepest part of the fire. While what they find on this adventure isn’t like the prison they just left, the new place has its own issues. The action in this episode is intense and near nonstop, however that’s not to say in a few places some dark humor sneaks in to give the reader a bit of breathing room. Once again Michael Robertson has created a worthy sequel to this story line and has set the stage for the next episode following this group’s next adventures. I received a review copy of this book from the author and chose to provide my review.
Our band of refugees has finally arrived at the supposedly ultimate goal – the South. However, this part of the world also contains widely separated groups – the elites and the outcasts – with constant strife and battles between them. Both groups consider William and company as public enemies, so they are still in a fight for their lives. How much longer can they avoid the grim reaper? Will their trials never end? Mr. Robertson continues to dig deep into the refugees’ interpersonal relationships as they continually face death and suffer one setback after another. The series has been an easy read with constant action that keeps me riveted to the story. I have thoroughly enjoyed it and will follow it to the finale. I received an ARC – this review is my honest opinion. I purchased a copy to support this outstanding author, and have already pre-ordered the next book.
After a long and arduous journey through Zombies and all kinds of obstacles, William and his friends have finally made it to the south of the wall. Are all his hopes and dreams about the place about to become reality or are they going to vanish in a puff of smoke? I am not going to tell, you will have to read it for yourself. I love the characters in this book, they keep on going through horrible experiences, yet sometimes it is too much and one succumbs to zombies or chooses an alternate route. Some are mentally traumatized and others power through. I love the world building as it is full and easy to imagine. This is a good book and I would recommend it.
I can’t lie, I was sad to see our main group separate from Joni... although I was relieved that we were still able to follow her story. I do feel that for me the series is beginning to push the boundaries in the wrong way - falling into the zompoc trope of “find a settlement, discover their horrifying secret, somehow escape with new allies and repeat” and each time it seems more extreme. Whilst the books are still enjoyable, they seem to have moved away from the original Zombie genre which is a shame.
Wow what an amazing installment full on all the way through. The friends have finally reached the south. But what waits for them will it be the paradise they had hoped. Also there's Joni's story still within the prison. With multiple storyline's every chapter ends with a cliffhanger. Interesting new characters and plenty of action make this a real page turner. Definitely recommend this story
I have really enjoyed this series. Great characters - we’ve lost several key members of the group along the way so glad that Joni is still with us. The diseased are a formidable foe and other human settlements are generally hostile. I look forward to the next book in the series.
Another fantastic instalment of the BTW series. This universe gets bigger with every book. Loads of nail biting action and ends of an excellent cliff hanger. Great stuff.
Book 13 continues by leading the protagonists to the promised land! Or, does it? Excellent characters and great world building makes me want more! The amazing action keeps me turning pages as quickly as possible. I highly recommend the entire series. Now I’m going to my corner to wait for book 14!

This like any one of Michael Robinson's books is attention getting, and like the other ones hard to put down. When you get invested in the characters you just have to find out what's next. I am almost done this book and can't wait to see what's next.
