Rate this book
In this science fiction/fantasy novel, two brothers and their cousin discover a device lost for 136 years in the foothills near Denver, Colorado. An entryway allows them to travel through time. North Table Mountain a novel features some of the most complex characters in modern science a deaf and blind sister who must cope with societies expectations – is she disabled or merely different, a seemingly ageless relative who guides them through their journey and an adopted transgender cousin who makes what could be the most important discovery of all.

As the story progresses the protagonists wrestle with the contradictions inherent to time travel. Can they alter events that have already occurred or are they only bystanders? Can they travel to a time before they were born or after they have died? Are there an unlimited number of timelines or a single continuum? Set primarily in the foothills and mountains in Colorado, the story also takes us to a future Phoenix and a past Austin with brief forays to Italy, Austria and Poland.

At its heart, North Table Mountain the novel is a morality play, a coming of age story. The characters confront some of the choices we all make with the added twist that they move through time and influence lives in ways we cannot. Will they try to win at all costs or use their advantage to help others? Operating behind the scenes are members of an ancient society responsible for the safekeeping of the entryway. All come together at the stories end with an unexpected conclusion.

This is a fresh and lively coming of age story with a time travel twist. Two brothers and a cousin, Jordan, Nathan, and Peter, (and later Peter’s brother) happen upon a way to travel through time. At first this is just a novelty, but as they face the future they each use the ability to move ahead and back in time to achieve their individual and very different goals. Going back in time to “fix” problems often results in unpredictable results. The one constant in their lives is their grandfather, Dockey, who they turn to for help. Dubbed a morality play, this could lead to great book club discussions. I encourage you to get involved in their lives!
