Human against vampire. The hunter against the hunted.
I kill bloodsuckers for a living.
The job should be simple—capture the target and collect the money. But when I draw my enemy out in the open, I’m blindsided by his mesmerizing green eyes and snarky wit. Sam Mason is the type of vampire my mom warned me about—the kind who will seduce you with his easy smile and arrogant charm.
Yet, I know better.
The Vampire Navy SEAL oozes mayhem and sex appeal. Sam’s deadly swagger puts me on edge and sets my nerves on fire. If I mess with him, he’ll annihilate me in a second. That thrills and terrifies me at the same time.
A million red flags are telling me to run. But my sisters lives are in jeopardy, and the only way to save them is to grovel for Sam’s help.
Is it possible to push the flames to the back burner and trust an enemy who can take anything he wants?
The Hunted is an enemies-to-lovers, paranormal, military romance and the first book in the new Vampire Navy SEAL spin-off series. Layla and Sam’s story is a slow burn romance with a feisty heroine, snarky banter, action, suspense, off-the-charts steamy times, and ends on a cliffhanger.
Navy veteran and bestselling author S.B. Alexander writes paranormal, new adult, and young adult romance. Her writing is emotional, angsty, and character-driven, and features hot heroes stealing hearts.
S.B. or Susan as she likes to be called is a navy veteran, former high school teacher, and former corporate sales executive. She’s a lover of sports, especially baseball, although nowadays you can find her on the golf course.
When she’s not writing, she’s a full-time caregiver to her soul mate of twenty-two years who got a bad deal in life when he was diagnosed with ALS. Her motto: “Life is too short to waste. So live every moment like it’s your last.”
(audiobook) Let’s just say it was mostly entertaining. It deserved a slightly better writing, fewer repetitions and some more seduction–though this one is a personal preference–but as it was, it wasn’t boring.
The characters weren’t that bad. Besides the recurrent gushing about their physical assets, there was a real characterization through “show, don’t tell”. We learn more about Layla and Sam through their actions, plus some conversations. Though at this point, they’re already drawn to each other, and they could have the personality of an old sock, they’d still be madly in love with each other. Thankfully, they have some real personality traits. Sam is 100% protective alpha with a healthy dose of love for his family and his teammates, while Layla is utterly loyal to her relatives, even when they’re ignoring her. She’s also stubborn and sometimes makes bad decision, which goes great with a protective love interest.
But once their attraction to each other has been established, I could have gone with fewer paragraphs about how beautiful the other is, and why they shouldn’t entertain the idea of a relationship. It drags the story and messes up with the pace, when it could have been a fast-paced action-packed book.
As it is, it is still generous in action scenes, and gory action scenes at that. It’s expected with a vampire as the hero, and a world full of monsters and creatures. I’d have liked more world building, some day to day stuff, but it was probably explained in the previous series, centered on another couple.
The events of that series are offered in big info dumps that seem necessary but aren’t pleasant to read. I was sometimes confused, as the story came back to characters previously introduced, but that were long dead, and I had forgotten all about them. I felt like it couldn’t really be read as a standalone.
There’s also some action in the sheets. It was borderline disturbing as there’s a lot of blood play between Sam and Layla. But they’re seriously going at it a few times.
The narration was half good. I felt the narrators didn’t give the same energy, and the loud inhaling of the female narrators annoyed me. The male narrator was quite good with growly Sam though.
Quickie
- Series: Vampire navy SEAL: Sam & Layla #1 (ends on a cliffhanger, and references a lot another series by the same author) - Hashtags: #paranormal romance #military romance #romantic suspense #enemies to lovers #instalove #vampire #vampire hunter - Triggers: violence and death, lots of blood, including blood play - Main couple: Layla Aberdeen & Sam Mason - Hotness: 3/5 - Romance: 3/5 - + interesting world building - – it drags a bit
Great Vampire Romance is my take on this book, it has a lot of amazing action and a nice amount of smutty scenes and I am loving the story. I am looking forward to reading the next volume of this series. Highly recommended.
Layla Aberdeen and her sisters are vampire hunters. Sam is a Mason vampire, an uber elite kind of Navy SEAL vampire. While trying to capture Sam for a bounty Layla and her sisters get caught in the middle of a vampire versus vampire web of mystery and death.
Initially the book had momentum but much too quickly the story became very convoluted. Layla and Sam’s is a spin off another series. I am not sure which series but with all of the backstories thrown around there is definitely more to the book. The history was long and made the story difficult to get through. Many of the characters had long histories that weren’t easy to explain in the span of a few memories and sentences. They book got so bogged down by the past that it was difficult to stay interested in the current plot line.
The Aberdeen sisters were the kind that acted tough but kept having to get rescued because they would run into danger just to prove they were vampire hunters and could handle themselves. They were not likable at all. Sam was not an Alpha vampire. He acted like a back up in a boy band. A very immature male lead. He had many powers and was the only one with such powers but he never lived up to his hype. The insta love between Sam and Layla was within one day.
The writing in this book bothered me. The women were always giggling and the men were always smirking.
I won’t be continuing the series and I would not recommend.
'La necesitaba tanto como necesitaba sangre para vivir'.

The Hunted de S. B. Alexander serie Vampire Navy SEAL libro 1
Argumento:
A ver...
This is the first time I’ve read this author and it won’t be the last! Her characters are well developed and the storyline is intriguing, captivating, suspenseful and full of passion. Sam is a vampire Navy SEAL which means he’s stronger than normal vampires and Layla is a human and vampire Hunter sent to capture Sam. But when Layla‘s sister is in trouble Sam is the only one that can help her. They have such an intense chemistry but they try to keep it professional. I can’t wait for the continuation of their story!!
Oh my goodness you've got to buy this book! It's a continuation of Susan's Vampire Seals series and it's wonderful! Sam is a vampire and Layla has been raised to hunt and kill vampires by her family. Sam is drawn to Layla but she wants absolutely nothing to do with him... or does she?! The way Susan resolves the misconceptions each one has about the other is something else. Her way of writing draws you into every book she writes like these are friends or people you want to be friends with or places you want to be. That's what I enjoy about her books and I punch pre-order every time I finish one of hers and I cannot wait until the next one comes out. They're all that good. I actually read this book in one sitting so needless to say I did not sleep the night I started it. If you're thinking about purchasing this book I suggest you do if this is your first one by Susan Alexander. Come along and read with those of us who love her world of vampires. I know you will truly enjoy all of them! I received an ARC of this book and I give this review sincerely from my heart. Thank you Susan. As always, I was happy to read your book!
New author for me. Interesting premise with vampires who are Navy Seals and vampire hunters. It just didn’t deliver for me. The descriptions of how hot the hero and heroine were got repetitive and boring. The heroine and her sisters are supposed to be badass vampire hunters but I didn’t get that in their actions…also lots of talking about their Uncles but didn’t really get details on why the Uncles stayed away after their Dad died. Some things I think were explained in a previous series about Webb and Jo but I’m not motivated to read that 5 book series. This one ends on a bit of a cliffhanger…but again, I’m not motivated to pick up book 2 of this 7 book series.
Sam & Layla are sworn enemies but hot AF together!! One little taste and they can’t get enough of each other. I love them together & can’t wait to see what happens next 😑
Just recently been on a Vampire/PNR genre kick. I used to not really care for this genre but lately my mind has been pleasantly changing! These great thing about these kinds of books is that they do not have to follow a certain rule. And maybe this where and why I historically have been hard on these stories because really a story of Vampires how could that any good. Well slap me silly because here I am to admit " I WAS WRONG!" I have always said for this kind of story line to work the author really has to find a way for the non-human storyline to work. There must be something that works and not the same old same story being retold repeatedly in this genre. Well, I was easily lured to this story, first off, we met Sam who is a Vampire seal - HMMM yes that what I said a Vampire Seal. Now this is a new spin on Vampires, and Layla is a Vampire Hunter, and she is no Buffy either! Back to the Seals thingy - ummm this is new, guess I always assumed Vampires to be more or less the villain in the story, but here we have Vampires who are military Seals - hmm wonder where this is going. I love this spin and there is definitely some unique pull that these two have. They have this chemistry and attraction that cannot be denied. Oh, but back to the story here we have a human, Layla, hunting a Vampire Seal, Sam, and along the way people get kidnapped, glamoured (is that the right term? ), attitudes galore, fighting and of course some sexual tension who wouldn’t want to encounter all of this??? Anywho I thorough enjoyed this first book I admit I was sucked in (haha). I really want to see what happens and where this story line goes. Of course, there is a little bit of a cliffy but hell who doesn’t love one of those!! I highly recommend trying this book out.
This was my first read by S.B., a military / suspense / paranormal read which I really enjoyed, although I did feel I was missing out on some of the plot points at times, thinking this is a spin off from maybe another series? I won't stop me reading more or even finding the other series and reading that one, it was really good!
Sam is a vampire with some unique abilities (others in his family have some different abilities too) and as such they are top of the wanted list of the vampire hunters, though they have no idea just how strong he is. Layla and her sisters are hired to take out Sam (she comes from a family dedicated to removing vampires from the world), but they are quite unprepared for just how strong he is. But more than that both Sam and Layla are perturbed by some very strong feelings of attraction for each other, which is way out the question for them both.
But the more time they spend together the more they are attracted to each other, with Layla developing some weird vampire ism's which she just cannot get a handle on! Sam is declaring her as his but Layla is overwhelmed with just how quick things are happening and needs some space.
This ends on a cliffy with book 2 due out in a few months I think. I really enjoyed it, loving the dynamics between the Vampire Seals and their whole world, will definitely look into reading more of this. Lots going on to keep those pages turning and holding your attention, a great PNR / enemies-to-lovers / military suspense read.
What an epic introduction to this author!!! My heart is still in my throat and adrenaline pumping after that doozy of a cliffy! My word....i am officially on tenterhooks desperate for the next book. This was my first time reading anything by this author and I can say without any hesitation, I'm all in! Considering I devoured this book in roughly three hours, I think it's safe to say I'm officially a fan 😉💗.
I loved the concept of having a SEAL team made up of vampires that help protect supes, but also try to protect humans. The world building shows like in real life, you have good people and bad people... and sometimes those in between. This is also the same in the world of vampires....one can't paint them all with the same brush of "evil" or "monster". So using the concept of a vampire Navy SEAL and a female vampire hunter crossing paths then needing one another for information or help is a fascinating concept. There's FAR MORE that happens that I refuse to spoil, and a few unanswered questions along the way...but through it all one theme does seem to prevail, that of family. The reader is taken on one heckuva journey within these pages, and you will definitely feel an immense range of emotions. I truly.came to care about these characters, and cannot wait to see what's next! There's definitely plenty of alpha males within these pages, as well as sexy time, action, and just an all out great read. Take a chance, dive in and enjoy!!
I was lucky enough to get my hands on this inviting, seductive story. Sam and Layla have a lot to offer up in this story where their attraction is out of the norm since Sam is a vampire and Layla a vampire hunter. So maybe it has some things you expected but a lot you just won't see coming and that makes it worth reading. Let's not forget a very sexy, talented vampire seal who has more to offer than the avereage vampire. Ok, don't roll your eyes at the cliches I've used. Really this is just the beginning for these two because the author left us with a great cliffhanger. The main characters work so perfectly together and the secondary characters just fill in the blanks to add another layer of suspense and heat to what is already a good story. I will say that I listened to the audible version and I LOVED the narrator. I can't complain. It was one of the better narrations I've listened to and I can't wait for the next book to come out. I am definitely on Team Sam and Layla and wait (impatiently) for what promises to be even more complex for these two characters and it will be interesting to see how all sides play out.
The Hunted by SB Alexander is an enemies-to-lovers paranormal romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Blake Lockheart and Cecily Foster. This is the first book in the Vampire Navy SEAL: Sam & Layla series.
This is the second series of Susan's that I have read and it won't be my last. I am really enjoying the slow burn relationship between Sam and Layla. I liked that we got both of their points of view throughout the book. It really brought the story to life.
The book ends on a cliffhanger which wasn't a surprise since it's the first book in the series. I can't wait for the next book The Predator to be released on April 19, 2022
Blake and Cecily did a great job on the narration. They both really know how to bring a story to life. I look forward to reading more of their work in the future.
I would recommend this book if you like enemies-to-lovers romance, paranormal romances, military romances, slow burn romances, or romantic suspense.
The Hunted By S.B. Alexander Main Characters: Sam and Layla I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author. 5 out of 5 stars I have read and reviewed about 11 or 12 of Susan's books and have loved every one of them. This is the very first vampire book I have read. I mostly stick to contemporary romances but I thought I would step out of my comfort zone and try this one. I was not disappointed. This is contemporary suspense paranormal, a military romance. I love all the main characters in this book. I found plenty of drama, suspense, chemistry, and well-written characters. This book does end in a cliffhanger and I have to admit I am not a big fan of that only because at my age I have short-term memory problems and when the next book comes out I will have to read a refresher on this series. Susan does a fabulous job of keeping a reader's interest and I do look forward to reading more by her.
WOW I'm not usually into the paranormal type books but I think this may have converted me, I seriously cannot wait for more, Absolutely loved it I was so apprehensive when I started reading but boy just WOW, the story just flows, pulls you in and you dont want to put it down, you are in there with them fighting with them for them, the story is not to far fetched if you know what I mean it's all believable, I think thats why I liked it. I will say it ends on a bit of a cliff hanger but don't be discouraged the next installment is April. I would most definitely recommend this new book by Susan Alexander. It's more than a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read.
Sam and Layla are enemy's that would never work but they have this amazing chemistry that even they cannot control. Loved the other Characters too Harley, Ben, Jo, Abbey just to name but a few, Read the book to see where is goes it's absolutely worth the read.
When I first started reading romance it was Paranormal Romance. I stopped reading them and haven’t read many in almost 10 years. But I am so happy that I took a chance on this book!!!
I loved Layla and Sam. They are both amazing characters. I loved their connection.
While I know this book was paranormal it didn’t feel like it. The things that happened in the book didn’t seem far fetched. That’s where my struggle with paranormal came from, was the things that didn’t seem could be real.
I am not going to lie. This book left me on a cliffhanger and I don’t like that. I just want to know what’s going to happen next. I cannot wait until the next book comes out. I need more Layla and Sam. I’m also curious about Layla’s sisters Rianne and Jordyn. I really liked Jordyn and want to know more about her. I’m a little up in the air with Rianne.
First off I was so thrilled to learn that Sam Mason, member of the elite Vampire Seals was getting his own story and fingers crossed a series and believe me you won't be disappointed one bit. If you haven't read the earlier series that revolved around Sam and his sister Jo Mason and how this whole Vampire Seals series started I would highly recommend you do, but if you simply found this little gem you can easily read it on its own and follow the saga.
As I said this is Sam's story five years later and things really heat up when Sam, vampire hunk and military seal meets his match with Layla, a sexy vampire hunter from a family sworn to hunt down and rid the world of vampires. Great characters as usual, great story filled with sexual tensions, swooning romance and just enough mystery and complexity to know this is going to be one great series.
I was provided with an ARC from the author for an honest review.
This is a paranormal military romance. Sam is a vampire Navy Seal, who has empath and other superior vampire abilities. Layla is a vampire hunter who is hired to hunt Sam. Even though they should be enemies their chemistry is white hot. The more they are together the stronger their connection becomes. Sam claims Layla as his but Layla is so confused about her feelings about Sam. They also are dealing with shifters and other vampires who want to benefit from Sam and his families’ special powers. Sam doesn’t want to lose Layla but she decides to leave with her sisters, to try to work through her feelings. But things aren’t over by a long stretch. There is an exciting cliffhanger that leaves you wanting to read more of Sam and Layla’s story.
A direct spin-off from the Vampire SEALS series where Jo and her brother Sam fight for their lives as newly turned vamps with powerful DNA. The Hunted focuses on Sam, his infatuation with a human and their fight to find her sister. Layla comes from a family with a different legacy, as she tries to honor them and complete her mission she also questions what’s in her heart. It’s quite steamier and sexier than the other series, Sam and Layla are extremely hot and very in tune with their desires. This new series is starting off well with lots of excitement and new characters. I received an early copy and have written my review voluntarily.
Throw away everything you have heard about this book. Man, it will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions. Sam is a Vampire Navy Seal and holy hotness he has powers like no other. He and his sister are always a target and all he wants to do is protect those around him. When an op turns the wrong way and he meets Layla a human and her sister well things are about to get dicey. Layla is a Vampire hunter and will kill anyone who gets in her way. However, her sister's lives are in danger and Sam is the only one who can help. These two will have a whirlwind of a time trying to stay professional because of the chemistry you can feel jump off the pages. Can Sam help Layla before it's too late? Can he save himself and his family? There are some amazing page-turners in this story.
This is the first book in the Vampire Navy SEAL series. Sam Mason is one of the most powerful vampires in the vampire navy SEAL. Layla is part of one of the most famous vampire hunters family. Layla and her sisters are on the outside with their uncles. They take a job that is way out of their skill set. They got set up to fail. Eventhough Sam and Layla should be enemies they are drawn to each other. The storyline of the Mason vampires is very interesting and unique. This book does end on one heck of a cliffhanger! I can't wait for the next book. Cecily Foster and Blake Lockheart did a fantastic job narrating this book.
I voluntary review an ARC. This is the first book of a series, the books should be read in order. What a great start to this new series. I'm normally not the biggest fan of vampire stories, but this book is a real page turner. I fell in love with the protagonists. And with Abbey. A great storyline and writing style as expected by this author. I've only read romance and YA by her before, but she can deliver magical books too. Can't wait for part two.
This was my first book by SB Alexander, but definitely not the last!! You could sense there were stories about the side characters before, but in no way was I missing out. You can totally read this book as a stand-alone!
Sam is one powerful vampire everyone wants to capture to get on his DNA. Layla is a vampire Hunter and hates them with a vengeance, until she needs to work with Sam together, because one of her sisters gets kidnapped. The chemistry between these two is off the charts. Sweating. Smoldering hot! The suspense is keeping you on edge, and even tho I’m not really a PNR fan, I LOVED this book. It kept me glued to my kindle, and I couldn’t wait to see what’s happening next!
This book ends on a cliffy and I’m excited to see what the author has next in store for us, and how the story between Layla and Sam continues!!!
Holy intense batman, what did I just read? The Hunted is a timeless love hate story for the ages. I was instantly smitten with Sam, though I can't say he's entirely the hero in the story. He does make an amazing case for it though. We're also introduced to Layla, and that is where the plot thickens, and all the feels start compiling. Their chemistry is off the charts, yet they are time bombs ready to explode. The outside world, reality of who they are, and those they love pulling them apart. Beautifully written, I was hanging onto every word.
This was a gripping storyline filled with passion, action suspense intrigue twist and turns with amazing characters and was a captivating read. A definite twist to a vampire and vampire hunter story.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Love this author and her writting style. This was a great start to a great series. Finished this in one sitting. Susan can write anything and i love this genre best. Great story. Can't wait to read the next one in the series #kbsbloggingandreviews
This is the first book in the Vampire Navy SEAL, an amazing Paranormal Romance. Sam and Layla's story is suspenseful, intricate, and captivating. This is an excellent paranormal romance. Blake Lockheart and Cecily Foster did a fantastic job with the narration. I enjoyed it. Looking forward to listening to The Predator, the next book in the series, to know what happens next. #TheFlock
Supernatural books were always my go-to genre, it’s been a quite a while since I read one…they all started to feel the same.
This book packed the punch it took to relight my interest in Vampires and Shifters, and now I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!
I loved the connection between Layla and Sam. The author makes you feel their every emotion.
Great story twists in the Vampire v. Human world, with a cliff-hanger that you makes you wonder if you can hang on ‘till the next book in the series is released…..might have to try another paranormal series by SB to tide me over…The Vampire Navy SEAL here I come

I’ve never read anything by this author before & holy wow will I be checking out her other books asap! I loved this book! Plus that cliffhanger was a killer, I knew it as soon as I seen there was 90% of the book left that it was going to end on a doozy. I was right! I cannot wait for the next book.
I’m loving this world, all the characters are awesome. Sam, seriously I wish he was a real guy in my world. Layla is one lucky lucky lady! There’s so much going on, so many secrets, lots of plots happening & I just want more. I hope book two releases soon!
