My bestie, Valerie, offered to hook me up with a quirky oddball of a man she met at the gas station where she works. She insisted that he would be perfect for me, because he’s into the paranormal so much that he has modified his appearance to look like a vampire, complete with fangs, pointed ears, and inhuman eyes. She knows I love anything paranormal or supernatural—or just plain weird—and honestly, her description of Vincent certainly had me intrigued.
Though she managed to talk me into taking Vincent to her New Year’s Eve bash as my blind date, I had my reservations, but one of my New Year’s resolutions was to take risks and try new things in an effort to live my life to its fullest, instead of just existing. Starting that resolution early seemed to pay off when I met my date. Vincent turned out to be as gorgeous as she’d described, and his body modifications were certainly as unusual as she’d promised.
Then he took me back to his place, and I discovered that his body wasn’t modified at all. He’s not pretending to be a vampire.
He is one—and an alien one at that!

Vincent
When it came time to seek my mate, I knew I would end up traveling to another dimension through the Nexus to find her. Wanting the kind of forever-love that my parents enjoyed, I focused on my half-human side and decided to search for a human mate on a world much like the one my own mother, Evie, was abducted from so many years ago.
To my surprise, I was able to hide in plain sight amongst the humans, who believed my Fayi features were a result of artificial body alterations. As long as they never saw me with my shirt off, they wouldn’t guess that I had six deadly, venomous claws the Fayi call “claudas” that extended from my chitinous spine. Unfortunately, being unable to take my shirt off until I knew I could trust a woman not to freak out when she saw my claudas made dating more complicated.
Then the manager of the gas station where I stopped in every day to satisfy my sweet tooth told me all about her best friend—a woman named Gabby who loved the unusual and paranormal. Gabby sounded exactly like the kind of woman who would embrace my inhuman nature—and allow me to embrace her with my claudas.
I just hoped she would be prepared to leave her world behind forever and return with me to the Dead Fall to become the most important part of mine.
Born a dragon, but forced to take human form to fit into those little baby carriers, Susan accepted that she'd have to live a mortal life. She just wasn't going to go around being all boring about it. As soon as she was old enough, she immediately applied for an alien abduction, but got wait-listed, so she made her lair in the desert to wait out the coming zombie apocalypse with a pair of magical cats (they can appear underfoot in an instant, usually at the steps) and the dog from Hades that has three heads (and now has three bodies to go with them).
When the white knight came to fight the dragon, Susan liked him so much she decided to marry him and they now have a beautiful little dragonlet. (Who looks just like a little girl unless you use a magic mirror)
Fortunately, despite being trapped in this dimension, Susan uses her dragon's vision to see all the most interesting goings-on in the multiverse. Figuring they made great stories, she decided to share them with the rest of the mortal world, by writing fantasy, science fiction and romance.
Initial thoughts (12/19/21): I was very excited to see this recommended me because I really liked the first series (at least the first 3 books. I'm iffy with additions to harems after formation). There were some characterization choices and events that made me dislike Vincent and made me feel like Gabby was too forgiving. Honestly she's a doormat that is super insecure in an annoying way. Sexual desire doesn't mean immediate forgiveness. I'll elaborate more in a full review to come, hopefully sometime this week.
Final Review (12/26/21): It’s been a while since I read this and I wanted to give myself some time to think about it. But I am still mad, because the decisions I alluded to in my initial thoughts are so unforgivable. But let’s not hope into the negative immediately, let’s talk characters.
Gabby the heroine. She has bad taste in men and keeps getting back with her on again/off again boyfriend, Charles . She has some self perception issues and is set up on a blind date by her bestie, Valerie . She makes some mistakes, one of which we will discuss when I go on a rant. As heroines go she was okay, not whiny but she didn’t feel distinct. Honestly she kinda gave me a toned down version of Vincent’s aunt, Alice from Into the Dead Fall. I was super happy to see Alice crop up later in the book as a social worky person. That was a little weird. I love her nerdy side - ComicCon, figurines, etc.
Vincent ohh… I loved you at first and then you just pissed me off. He’s the hero. He’s the son of Evie and Doshakeren from Key to the Dead Fall. I found the Fayi species very interesting then and Vincent was the same way. He had vampire teeth and claudas (not sure how to explain those but read any Susan Trombley book and you’ll run into them). He has other alien features; it is an alien romance so…. One of the things I liked about Vincent was he was a romantic and wanted love like his parents. Dude was hard core interested in monogamy which went against his species’ culture. They were cute for the two days they were together.
I’m gonna get spoiler heavy and incoherent so be warned if you dare reveal. There is ALOT of content hidden under the spoiler tag but I couldn’t think of a way to phrase it without spoiling the plot.
Gosh, this was way longer than I intended. This could have been great but I am not as forgiving as Gabby. That being said I still love Susan Trombley and I will continue because I need to see Friak and Sherak find their mates but especially Friak he’s been through so much.
This book didn't work for me but I was all over the juicy afterword where Susan Trombley outlined all the fantastic books that are set to be published in 2022:
- FINALLY Ava's book in the Iriduan Test Subject series (YASSSSSSS)
- three Children of the Dead Fall books (featuring one heroine and her three guys), several more are outlined (Sherak will be the first in this reverse harem yey. No heroine has been confirmed but I think I know who it is)
- Book 2 in the Dark Paths series (potentially exciting)
- Uriale's book (villain romance!!!)
About this book:
More than half of this book, despite the Dead Fall title, plays on Earth. For first time readers, that might be a nice introduction to the Dead Fall. For me, it was frustrating. I wanted to see Evie, Alice and their mates and children!! Especially Veraza. Especially the children. I just wanted 500 pages of getting to know the children and reading mindless fluff about life in the Dead Fall.
INSTEAD, I got ... Gebby and Vincent.
The first chapter introduces us to Gebby, who is a doormat and wants to run back, tail wagging, to her emotionally abusive ex who constantly cheats on her. Val, Gebby's best friend, tells her not to and to have some self respect. Val is great. We all need a friend like Val. But the hard truth is that no one needs a friend like Gebby.
Gebby's problem isn't her vapid band douche bro ex. Gebby's problem is GEBBY. 70% of her page time, and she has a lot, is filled with monologues about how her self-doubts are justified. "My skin is so saggy" "I used to be fat" "My Kim K make up looks silly on me" "I'm not good enough for someone hot". She goes on and on with her self-hatred. I swear, if Gebby's words were a whip, she'd have bled out by now. This girl does not need a hot alien boyfriend. What she needs is to listen to her good friend Val and ditch her ex, and most impprtantly, Gebby needs THERAPY. At least a couple of months of talking about the bullying she experienced and how it has left her an insecure clown.
"But why would you call poor Gebby a clown? Isn't she an abusive survivor?" Sure she is, because surviving passively is the first step of surviving. The next step is to concentrate on yourself and move on, and that's the kind of active surviving that Gebby has no intention of doing.
Romance books often come with abuse survivors, some of them hurt beyond repair. But I rarely see a character that is so involved and caught up in their self-flagellation. Her self hatred is so intense at times that I started doubting that her interest in monsters, halloween and aliens was even real. Sewing as a hobby and decorating were mentioned in passing, but really the essence of Gebby as a person is "I hate myself and I will list the reasons why you should too".
To be fair, Vincent is a vapid poptart. Dumb as a toaster, no personality whatsoever, and if this guy sees a conclusion? He jumps without a parachute.
These two deserved to be thrown into the Rift into a parallel dimension where they won't bother anyone else.

Pre-Review: Children of the DEAD FALL??!!
Attention, attention, this is not a drill. Please prepare for heart palpitations as a spin off of the beloved Dead Fall series appears from out of nowhere and with no forewarning. I repeat: attention, attention, this is not a drill. Please prepare ...
OMG I SCREAMED when I read about this today. I am SO EXCITED!!!!
I love the Dead Fall series so fricking much and a spinoff featuring the children is only the best thing that happened to me this month!! Best Christmas present ever. Now all I want is this book and a comfy room where I can read italone and undisturbed!
Instant dislike of the sister, skipped pages of monologues and didnt feel like I'd missed anything. Seems a little like an unnecessary spin off from the Irudians storyline, which I liked.
Woah this is nothing like her Iriduan series and I don’t like it. This is not my cup of tea, reading ad nauseam about the heroine’s lack of confidence, doormat behaviour, insecurity, body issues, etc . The whole Instagram/social media and photoshop/filter thing is also just not what I want to read about in a sci-fi romance personally. I won’t leave a rating as I didn’t even get to the 25% mark 😑
I suspect one of the reasons this book got lower ratings is the fact that most of this book was simply setting up new readers to Dead Fall and reminding fans of the first series. The info drop as far as Omni character names was overwhelming and their interaction felt cartoonish. However, I'm still in mega love with this concept and the spice level was great. I will absolutely keep reading this series. I hope the author never leaves the Dead Fall.
If this is your first Trombley novel start with Into the Dead Fall before this series and it'll make more sense.
This is a 2.5 star read for me. I liked most of the books in the previous series, but what really made me love the series was the Dead Fall world itself. Great world building there. This is the first in a secondary series. I was excited for it, but this book falls flat.
The characterization of everyone is two dimensional. The buildup of the main relationship is so unrealistic and almost nonexistent. There is barely any getting to know one another stage. It is instant love times ten, in my opinion. The main hero reacts in such an overly dramatic fashion at all times.
There is SO much emphasis on body insecurity, on human women being treated like dirt by human men and not nearly enough emphasis on an actual plotline. The dialogue is decent at times and cringe-worthy at other times.
There are too many characters introduced too quickly. There are bizarre comments or subject changes made often that don't fit the current situation. There is no context given as to what has lead the character or characters to such quick changes.
Also, baffling decisions are made by multiple characters, but specifically the heroine, her best friend, and the hero's siblings. The decisions are baffling because they seem to follow no sense of reason at all. It as if these characters are 10 year olds trapped in young adult bodies. No sense of comprehension about their world, their actions, their morals, or their possible consequences.
The entire plotline point of this book seems to be getting the heroine to the Dead Fall, but how this happens is so cringe worthy, not thought out well or explained well.
So disappointed in this book, as up until now I've really enjoyed everything I've read by this author. But the MFC was a sad sack of a doormat, the MMC far too impulsive and unintelligent (I did not get the "insta-love" at all), there was too much dialogue (verbal and inner), and don't get me started on the MMC's psychotic sister. I've come to view "kickass" and "sassy" in a negative light as so often such female characters are obstinate, mouthy, reckless, and incredibly annoying. Ria was all of that, as she was a violent b*tch.
A nice spinoff of the original Dead Fall series. Gabby was a self-conscious mess because of her shitty mother and equally awful off an on again ex Charles. She did lose a lot of weight after breaking up with the asshole for the last time and was even more self-conscious, because of all the sagginess from the weight loss. Then her best friend, Val, sets her up on a blind date on a New Years party. The date started so awful that I teared up for poor Gabby, thankfully Vincent got better later in the evening. Vincent was one of Evie's (heroine from the first series) adult children, he was hot as all hell and hiding the fact that he wasn't fully human. One of his fathers, the Grey, told him to look for his mate in parallel dimension Earth and he spent months looking. After his initial disgust at Gabby's 100 layers of makeup challenge to look like Instagram model he was shocked to see her slipping out from the party without it and looking like a human ;) he was very sweet after that....for a night at least. Then I was disappointed once again. I hate the breakup trope and we've got it after not even 24 hours of relationship...and it lasted a fucking year. To make the matters worse, it would last indefinitely if his three stupid siblings didn't decide to abduct Gabby to their dimension. I hated Alex and Ria. Alex was a fucking idiot that didn't even ask the name of the girl he was trying to abduct, so obviously he got the wrong one, and Ria was a violent and abusive bitch. Sherak disappointed me immensely, I thought he was smarter than that stupid plan. Val's story was so sad. She seemed like a strong gal at the beginning of the book then she spiraled so much that it hurt to read.
Overall I really liked this book. The world building is fantastic, the characters are very well developed, there are great side characters and there is a wonderful love story between human Gabby and half human/ half alien Vincent, who comes to earth from Dead Falls which is in another dimension to look for his mate. The first half of the book moved a little slow. Lots of the characters thoughts and lots of description but not much movement in the story. Then it picks up, but I found the angst part of the plot to drag on too much. I thought Vincent's stubbornness and jumping to conclusions was overdone a bit. But in the end, they get their hea. It will be nice to read about them in the next book in the series and see how they are doing.
DNF - quit at 25% Maybe I don’t like this authors style, not completely sure, but there is something about it I hated. I struggled to get 1/4th thru before giving up. To start with, there’s way too much repetitiveness. I started skimming to get past stuff. Next, way too much inner dialogue from both main characters. Next, I hate when the FMC is TSTL. I felt like I was missing something for the world building, as Vincent (MMC) thinks (inner dialogue mostly) about his home world and family -like I’m supposed to know who or what was what from name dropping etc. So from other reviews filling that in, I don’t think this is a stand alone series/book.
At my age (60), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.
Welcome back to the Dead Fall! I loved how Susan pulled the reader back into the fall. It was a slow teasing in the beginning and it's not till later in the book that you return but she does tell you along the way from Vincent's pov how things have gone and how the characters have grown. While allowing the reader to enjoy that this is a new beginning to a new spin off of the original series. Now you get to meet and enjoy the children of the Deadfall as they are 20 yrs later and many of the old favorites make a reappearance. Great new characters and loving older ones. While leaving the ending wide open for many new stories in the Deadfall and new adventures I definitely look forward to reading. Was not disappointed and loved the ride looking forward to more.
I probably should have read the books about the parents first, but I absolutely enjoyed this series starter. The characters really were fantastic with their own insecurities and habits. I love how Gabby and Val were able to help and support each other, and Vince added an entirely new level to the emotions the author was able to capture in each interaction. The girls have gone through so much, but I feel like they got where they needed to be in the end. This book holds so much promise for the rest of the series and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
The base of this story is amazing. Something i feel could be one of the best stories I have read. Now saying that, I feel its lacking the story. Its missing any real development between characters, the plot and focusing on soley on the inner dialog of the main characters and how they hate themselves. I feel like this is a rough draft and im still waiting on the final masterpiece of what it can be
My favorite thing about her books is that the character and world are full fleshed out and you can really immerse yourself in the story line. I'm a big fan of the Dead Fall series and enjoyed catching up with my favorite characters. I like my male heroes to veer away from the conventional and her books give me exactly what I'm looking for.
Loved this continuation with the children grown (and growing) up. Makes me want to go back and reread, forgot all about poor Pavdan and Omni, but loved seeing Friak (the little firebug grown up). Sorry will try not to give spoilers but the crossover with Iriduan Test Subjects is so cool, can’t wait for more!
Loved this book and the entry into the children's story. I love either the MF or RH story lines - don't hold back on the RH love stories! And I'm hoping that the next one involves the two males I hope it will! I honestly see a title as part of The Dead Fall and just click to buy before reading who is it about. Love this series!
I was very hyped about a spin off for one of my favorite series from her… but the first character coupling 😞… slow buildup.. very slow- I still don’t think Gabby had much character development from her self absorb monologue. Vincent- I expected more from him , being Evie’s son and all.. really hope this series picks up in the next installments.
This was quite different for me. I wasn't overly fond of the main female character as I found her over the top. The "romance" was rushed and not very romantic. The Fall characters were interesting but I really need to read the Dead Fall series first. I thought that this was a prequel but I was wrong.
WTF?? when did the dead fall turn into the land of “not like other girls”. Other girls are FABULOUS. You can like the things you like without putting others down. Femininity is not bad. DNF 13% I kept pushing, hoping I was getting the wrong vibes, but then the MMC kept talking about girls who wear makeup and nice clothing being fake.
I loved where the author took us with this first book in this new series. Being such a fan of Into the Dead Fall I can not wait to see where these new stories lead! The character growth and development always draws me in.
It's the start of the next generation finding their true loves and it's going to be very interesting to explore New Omni and all the growing it has done in the between years. I also liked the brief crossover mention with the Iriduan series.
Susan brings all her characters to vibrant life, and they roar off of the page! The Dead Fall is a mixed up conglomerate of multiple dimensions, and this next generation is amazing!
I loved the idea of a romance with people in the natural. The store had way to much of the characters talking to themselves. Did they just look at each other while having their self conversations? I gave up on finishing the sfory.
More of a Vampire book than I was anticipating. It had some interesting parts and I did read through the entire book. I'm sure there are some who will really like this book but not my style.
Once again I enjoyed another book by this author. It was nice to find out more of the newest generation of New Omni. I'm even more intrigued to find out what happens next.
