Opposites can attract, but can they build a life together? When lives are quite literally on the line sometimes the only thing you can do is believe in true love. Which might be a problem if you're a cold-hearted lawyer...
A Quiet Life is a new stand-alone lesbian romance from Sienna Waters, the bestselling author of The Wrong Date, A Perfect Mess and Tea Leaves & Tourniquets.
I know the blurb calls this an opposites attract romance but I don't think it is. I think Holland and Emory are very much the same, but at different stages of their lives with a 12 year age-gap between them. Emory has a young career as a vet and is fighting to make a name for herself in her small hometown and Holland recognises that ambition because she was once in Emory's shoes. Holland is 42, which is still relatively young, and 42 and 26 shouldn't be that big a gap in a relationship, but Holland has had a heart attack that forced her into early retirement as a high powered lawyer and this has driven her to change her lifestyle and needs.
I love the chemistry and sexual tension between them and I also like the general direction the story takes. There is a lot of self-awareness on Holland's part and she knows what she wants. But because she was also in Emory's position before, she thinks she knows what Emory needs as well. There is a lot of back and forth between characters because despite the attraction, Holland is convinced Emory is not the person for her and doesn't want to hold her back. But I like how they work through it to bridge the gap between them with a bit of understanding, enlightment and compromise.
I enjoyed this book a lot. A surprise find on Kindle Unlimited.
I like the characters and their dynamic works for me. I particularly liked how well they clicked right from the start and that Holland was able to get over herself by embracing her life, even with the alterations necessary for her health.
I wasn't interested, like at all, with the plot, however. Emory faces prejudice for being a woman where expectations are for male vets. That's hard enough. But to add outright persecution with an actual villain doing dastardly deeds is just not interesting to me.
Unfortunately, at the halfway point, I feel like I've had the romance payload already. They're so perfect for each other, and the chemistry is so strong, that I feel like the romance has culminated. Yeah, they're going to have to make the choice to make this thing long-term but the only thing holding them back is simply making that choice. And all that really stands in their way is talking things out.
Which means that the only conflicts left are a) not communicating and b) uninteresting plot. So I'm going to dnf this here, but with three stars because frankly, I really liked the romance. And that makes me feel like I'm getting away with something because I got all the great payoff I love in romance and I'm skipping all the add-ons that I don't care about. Win-win.
"A Quiet Life" is an opposites-attract, age-gap romance set in a small town. Holland, an ambitious lawyer leaves her job and moves to the country after having a heart attack. She is helping a stray dog which leads her to the town's vet, Emory. Sparks are flying almost instantly.
The synopsis sounded great, but unfortunately I was a bit disappointed. My problem was that I couldn't connect with either of the main characters and I couldn't feel the chemistry between them either. What I did like was Lucy, the dog and the neighbor Laura who didn't believe in boundaries but was still really hard not to like. In the end she made me laugh every time I read "Yoo-hoo".
I really enjoyed this latest book from Sienna Waters. Then again, I always like her books. This one I thought was just subtly different but was just as great. I liked the 'age-gap' characters who were at such different times in their lives, and enjoyed how they worked to get onto the same page. All you look for in an entertaining read. I received this book as an ARC and am giving it an honest review.
2.5. Just OK, A few irksome things about the relationship and drama around their jobs. Didn't really feel a true spark of connection or romance here. Nor was I particularly enthralled with the characters themselves.
There's far better stories to read in this authors catalogue, in my view.
This is a solid three star story. It’s in the Insta lust/Insta love category, which is not my favorite trope, but it has a little bit of a mystery element, that I was very interested in finding out what happened. Both the main characters are a bit two dimensional, but enjoyable for what they are. So yeah, a decent story.
I‘m a huge fan of Sienna Waters because her books always brighten my days. The plot of this one sounded great. I mean I love age-gap and ice-queen stories and we have both here.
When Holland has to change her life totally after she had a heart attack, her journey brings her to a small town. A town where everything is different than she has no for now. It’s not only so much more quiet than in a city, there are also people that look out for each other (not like usually in a city). For example her new neighbour Laura does everything she can do welcome her which includes setting her up with dates. The longer the story went on the more I loved Laura and this little town. I would definitely love to have people like that in my life, even if ok me being as private as I am it could be overwhelming sometimes. Lol
Emory on the other hand is a young vet that just had to take over the practice after her dad died unexpectedly. Being only in her twenties and as a woman people don’t trust the new vet. And that a big vet association wants to buy her out and does everything to make her life harder, doesn’t help of course.
When Holland and Emory meet there is this instant attraction. But it’s not one they both give in right away. It takes a bit and I loved to see them navigate to each other. There are several ups and downs. Of course there are some misunderstandings but actually not big ones and I was positively surprised how they talked about some things. But talking isn’t everything when life happens and especially Holland is suffering from more than just being scared of being in a committed relationship.
I don’t wanna reveal more about the storyline. Personally I loved both characters even if Holland annoyed me sometimes in the book because she was a tiny bit stubborn. That actually reminded me of myself and is probably the reason it annoyed me. I mean I totally got why she was like this after the experience she made in life.
Emory on the other hand is just so sweet and more mature than you would give her for her age. She definitely was more mature than Holland in some situations. ☺️ but of course she has her flaws too and maybe doesn’t have all the experience in life. But this only leads her to grow even more and that made me love her even more.
One thing I wanna mention too. There is a little creature that plays a huge part in the book, if not the most important part. She is called Lucy and just the sweetest dog. Dogs like her make me wanna have one myself. If you wanna know what I’m talking about, read this book. I think this is my new favourite by Sienna. 😍

Holland has had a major health scare and completely changes her life. Emory is trying to follow in her father's footsteps as a veterinarian. Their first meeting is a bit heated and awkward. Thanks to a stray dog Holland and Emory end up spending time together and become close. Small towns have a wonderful way of being friendly and including new people into their groups. Emory has to learn how to ask for help and slow down. Holland needs to realize that she doesn't know what's best for Emory. They have to work on communicating. It was a lovely age-gap romance story with great characters.

2022 and a new book by Ms. Waters and gosh I looked forward to this read. Petrified after suffering a heart attack, Holland a successful and driven lawyer, ends her career and escapes to the country side and small town living (a quiet life). When an injured stray dog gets attached to Holland a visit to the neighborhood vet is in order. Emory has taken over her father's practice but is struggling for acceptance by surrounding farmers since they consider her too young and inexperienced. When the two meet there's an instant connection but the age gap, the fact that Holland is only temporarily in the area and is terrified of having another heart attach or stressful situation makes for a bumpy road. A meddling neighbor Laura, small town gossip, Lucy the dog (little matchmaking canine) and other twists and turns are skillfully woven into this romance with some heat and both leads growing into the relationship with give and take. I didn't put this one down until the HEA. I easily recommend this 5 star hit from the author, which is firmly on my re-read shelf.
I rec'd a copy through Booksprout and this is a completely voluntary and unbiased review.
An enjoyable enough idea and set up, but the major problem I had with this was that the characters don't really seem to grow much with each other, even after some time has passed. They kind of stay in the same sort of stagnant state that has been causing issues and not communicating a lot.
If I could give a half star I would have rated this 3.5 stars. Overall I enjoyed the age-gap romance, I cared about the characters and the dog, and the story was interesting. However, two things bothered me; first I thought the issue of what ever Emory may or may not have done with the horse could have been explored a littler deeper, and it was resolved way too easily. Second, I couldn’t figure out where the story was set. Was Holland an attorney in New York? Chicago? London? And where “in the country” was Lowery Falls? Upstate New York? Virginia? It matters because of the lawsuit, I kept wondering where a fine and loss of her vet license could be imposed in a civil law suit. As far as I know someone sues someone else for compensation of a loss. Fines aren’t imposed. Is there a state in the U.S. that allows private entities to impose fines? Sometimes it’s the details that derail a story.
This was a nice book with likeable characters and a decent plot. At times you have to suspend your disbelief (doctors giving “advice” that they wouldn’t dream of giving or giving incomplete information and characters having an instant personality change). Usually you can overlook stuff like that but given these sorts of things are used here as plot devices, it stood out. At times, you just want to give Holland a shake for her ‘woe is me,” approach to everything and her reactions could be a bit Norma Desmond at times, but she was still likeable. I’d definitely read a follow up to this story if there is one because it would be really nice to see the characters develop a little more.

These characters irritated me so much, Holland was annoying, the amount of times she rejected emery for the most stupid reasons ever. Like I get the "she's young, she has a full life and career ahead of her" reason but damn even after she wanted to make changes she still gets rejected and blamed for being "busy" the amount of times she gets angry, red flag bro. she has no patience and no wonder she gets heart attacks with that stress level.
like chill
and emery's friend and co-worker is pathetic man. I wouldn't even call her a friend. she blames emery for how her fathers practice is going, tells her to sell it, tells emery to give up her license and doesn't even believe her when she says she didn't do anything wrong (ding dong hello!)
emery kinda a dumbass too, the poor girl let's her decisions be influenced by the bad people around her.
also the characters fell for each other way too soon so I wasn't really rooting for them to end up together after a while. at one point I thought Laura and Holland were gonna date, they spend more time together than her and emery.
This is a very interesting age gap book with the two main protagonists being at very different stages of their life journey. Despite their differences there is chemistry between them and possibilities arise along with the inevitable complications. Each of the main characters learn to show compassion for each other and new pathways are forged for a hea ending. I enjoyed the development of the characters and the characters in a rural community. Pleasurable read

Sienna Waters amazes me with her storytelling. She takes us on a sweet adventure and introduces us to some interesting characters. Holland is a cold hearted attorney, wins are her drug and not having a companion was not a problem until she had a heart attack at forty two. Forced to make changes, she quit her job, left the city and now is renting a house in a small quiet town. Emory lost her dad a few weeks ago and is trying to take over the vet office he had. But the towns people aren’t use to a woman, a young one at that, take over. No clients, no business, no money to keep it open. That’s another lost she can’t handle. When Holland and Emory paths cross the first time, it didn’t go so well. When a hurt dog shown up at Hollands home, she takes the dog to the vet. Now The second time they meet, it is nicer and sweeter. As the story unravels, Emory’s integrity comes in to play and Holland is needed but can she do this…. This was such a cute, sweet, story. Another good one!
The main characters felt like props made to go through events. I enjoyed most of the scenes by themselves, but they feel off as a whole. The liberal misuse/disuse (?) of commas detract from the reading experience so much. If you've been on the internet long enough, chances are you've seen at least one video of a cat spazzing out to metronomes. That's my brain while reading those sentences.
The right before the ending might be by design but I wasn't feeling it. I do appreciate and like how the actual ending
Dnfed at 73%. The older heroine is agonizing over her age, although she’s only in her early 40s. Also her attitude toward her girlfriend’s veterinarian career is pretty shitty, she’s bitched repeatedly when the vet is late because work, showed up unexpectedly at the vet office for a personal meeting in the middle of the working day, and advised the vet to give up her license because petty lawsuit she, a lawyer, hasn’t conducted any proper due diligence in yet.
This Ice queen, age gap, small town romance is everything I expect and enjoy from a Sienna Waters story. Angsty and realistic in the portrayal of the romantic relationship. When Holland has a heart attack in the courtroom at age 42 she knows its time for a drastic change. She decides to move to the middle of nowhere and resigns herself to a boring life. Emory is struggling to fill her father’s shoes as the town Vet when he passes unexpectedly. The two meet and sparks fly. The chemistry is palpable. These two women fight hard to resist but the desire they share wins out by a landslide. I really enjoyed the shared attraction and how the relationship developed between them. There were bumps but they handled them maturely and with good communication. The age difference and a few professional complications were the biggest hurdles and I liked how Waters handled the problems they faced. The character growth is fantastic. Both women change and learn throughout the story, I loved the maturity and understanding that was developed. The romance was steamy with a light dom/sub element that felt very natural to the characters. The casual physical relationship that quickly evolved into more was well done. They often got in their own way and made things harder for themselves but when they were in sync they were electric. I really loved the outcome of this story and enjoyed the journey the characters took to get there. Another great romance from Sienna Waters.
Holland is a highly successful attorney from a large city where she suffers a heart attack in the courtroom. Her physician told her she had to quit her job and change her lifestyle or she wouldn't be long for this world. So she rents a house in a small town where she rescues a sweet dog she names Lucy who has been limping around her new property.
Emory is a new veterinarian taking over her father's practice since he very recently passed away. When Holland brings Lucy in for help, they are forced together to nurse her back to health.
It's a well-paced story. The plot is enjoyable with a bit of a mystery. Nosy neighbor, Laura, is a gem! Holland and Emory are so different from one another. Although their relationship is fairly combustible, it's truly a slow burn and doesn't even solidify until the epilogue. Sienna Waters really prolonged the HEA for these two and it was well worth the wait!
Holland is a rich lawyer who suffers a heart attack. Her doctor advises her to quit her lawyer job and find a quiet life which she does. A dog becomes the catalyst between Holland and Emory Cater, the local veterinarian. The plot is very good and brings two opposite women in contact as feeling develop. Holland is afraid of another heat attack and the age difference between her and Emory. Emory is following. in her father's footsteps and runs the clinic after his death. She has to learn how to be in a relationship and make a compromise. I enjoyed the book and the characters around Holland and Emory. I recommend this book for romance readers. This kept on popping up in my kindle unlimited recommendations and I got to be honest I skimmed over it a few times due to the cover. HUGE MISTAKE!!! I love age gap Ice Queen romances and this was a hit. Holland was such a great written character, her demanding job as a lawyer resulting in a health issue which "forces" her to move to a tiny town where she meets vet Emory. I loved their first meeting and initial thoughts of each other, Laura and the general small town gossip, fighting attractions and then surrendering to it, all of it so deliciously inevitable. The plotline was solid, good, not that exciting or unpredictable but I even liked the conflict parts because the communication in the end was so satisfying and this author knows how to write great endings. Hot and cute and overall lovely read, I'm going to work my way through Waters' books now.
There is a brilliance to this author's ability to weave a tale and this book is a testament to that gift. When you pick up this book you will lose track of the hours you spend reading it til it's completely consumed and then you will stop and think of the absolutely beautiful story you were just a part of. You are going to wish you lived off a country road in Lowry Falls, where you have a Lucy and a Laura to fall back on, a small town life to call home, and an Emory to warm your heart. It's a fairytale with a magic all its own. A retired lawyer and a vet just finding her way in life converge over a pup named Lucy and the rest is a history you want to know all about.

I loved this book. Combining age gap, vets, and arguers to lovers it had lots of things I like. Holland although prickly was for me, easy to like. Lucy the dog really brought out a new side to her that even Holland didn't realise she had. I loved that although Holland had to make certain adjustments to being in a relationship, Emory went on a far bigger journey despite seeming to be the most put together of the two. Just when I am happy with my favourite Sienna book, she goes and blows me away with another one. Therefore I've decided that my absolute favourite hasn't been written yet. In fact it's not even a twinkle in the authors eye, but I'm excited to read it whenever it gets written.

she had worked her whole life to get ahead, and kept on going. First in her class in undergrad, second in her law school. youngest person to make partner at her law firm. never lost a case for her high rate paying corporate clients
the nausea, and everything that happened after, came as a complete surprise
so what should a gal do ehen retired at forty two?
a new chance for Emory to run a practice her veterinarian dad spent his life building. not something she expected to do alone
Can this two very different women find a way to live past grief and fear, and build and hold onto a life together?
new and different opportunities in life and romance

Hadley has a heart attack and is told to slow down and smell the roses by her doctor. Hadley doesn't expect to have a happy life with anyone that is also quiet or stress free. Hadley meets Emory and everything goes ok, but then Hadley has a scare that just causes havoc. So Hadley wants to leave thinking somewhere else will give me the quiet life that I need. People from Lowery Falls are sad to see her go. So Emory goes to say goodbye and some interesting things are made known to us readers about Hadley. Emory realizes that some things have to change and wants Hadley to help her with those changes. It's sweet and has some ' not fair' moments, but a read I found enjoyable and sweet.

3 stars. My least favorite book by Waters. The synopsis had me absolutely sold on this and the first chapter was really good and scarily intense as we see Holland’s heart attack on page but everything after that was boring. I didn’t really care for Holland or Emory. Holland was a bit more tolerable than Emory who I never grew to be a fan of. Emory was so unlikable and selfish. I also didn’t buy into the romance as I felt the two of them lacked chemistry. Honestly only giving this three stars because it’s well written, I did like some of the plot (especially towards the end), and the side characters were great.
