The introduction is an excellent post-colonial history of the Adirondacks where the tension between use/development versus preservation played out in full until the late 1900s when the area was set aside, and largely protected, as a Forest Preserve. Today, the Adirondack Park is the largest of all state and national parks outside of Alaska and is larger than several Eastern states. The pictures are nice, not dramatic; they capture an appealing, quiet, soothing beauty. It's great that there are such places still around.
