We went to an exhibit of Junaida's work this summer in Hiroshima, where we saw many pages of this book in the original. Stunning. We now have several of his books in our library. This tale of a lonely troll who befriends an entire town in spite of himself is simultaneously funny, heartwarming, and a reflection on living in community vs. the need for space.
The adult side of my brain wanted to point out the blind spots of the book's ending, and for a moment, I was embarrassed by myself. Am I so jaded that I can't enjoy a children's book for what it is? But then I remembered that deliberately misreading a children's book can be a good thing because you might be pointing out the blind spots of the book's moralistic messaging. In the case of 『街どろぼう』(Town Thief) by junaida, the artwork is colorful and entertaining--the geometric cluster of the houses carried on the giant's back is fun--yet the story is so simply crafted that it invites your own interpretation. It's a children's book that's even more fun to read as an adult.
