Devil's Cradle #2

The Nightmare in Him

Rate this book
The Ancients and the Aeons. Two groups of powerful immortals that have not seen eye to eye for millennia. And right now, at the heart of their conflict, stands Wynter Dellavale.

Wynter is a witch who sought safe haven for herself and her coven in Devil's Cradle. Founded by seven Ancient beings, the Home of Monsters provides protection, shelter, and will never give you up to outsiders . . . providing you pay the Ancients' substantial fee. Wynter already wears the brand of Cain - the mark that she is in his service and that her soul partly belongs to him. But as their relationship deepens, Wynter has to make a choice from which there's no turning back.

Cain cannot reveal the nightmare which lives inside him, the beast that could tear apart the woman who means more to him than he ever thought possible. But with his brother Abel out for revenge, and the suspicious reappearance of his parents Adam and Eve, Cain sees that Devil's Cradle is on the verge of war. As the stakes are raised, Cain knows he needs more than anything to keep Wynter safe and by his side - forever.

Upgraded to 3.5 after re-reading a couple times…

After not loving book one, I was hoping that things would improve for me with book two.

Sadly, they did not.

The world and backstory clicked more for me here than they did with book one, but that’s about it. The characters and their powers just feel…weak and convoluted to me. And Cain doesn’t really do anything that strikes me as all that badass.

But the main thing is that I just feel nothing for the main couple, which is what really shocks me. I’ve never had a Wright couple not do it for me in the chemistry department, but Cain and Wynter’s relationship feels very superficial and spark-less to me, for whatever reason.

Oh well. I love Suzanne Wright and I will still read the next one in the series.

I can't believe I'm about to say this, but I only finished this book through sheer willpower.
Maybe I made the mistake of rereading the first book before starting this one... because there was no need. Everything is retold in the first 20%.
The rest of the story... nothing exciting. Yeah, there are some new discoveries and fights, but nothing exciting for me, even some parts about Wynter's coven that keep repeating are boring...

Well, this book was... ok.

All the things I mentioned in my review of Book 1 are still applicable to this book. Except that in this one, I could feel more of a connection between Cain and Wynter, although not enough for the level of commitment they had by the end of the story. That was a bit too fast for me, it felt forced.

The series is interesting enough that I'll keep reading it, but not enough to be categorized as one of my best reads. I'm not even sure I want to reread this book.

Damn. I would have been PISSED if I had to wait a whole year to read this book. Nothing, and I mean nothing of note happened in this book; nothing moved me, there was no emotional investment for me, no plot progression and no meaningful development between the 2 MCs.

I have never had a problem with Suzanne Wright's story telling before. I loved her Phoenix Pack series - the writing was always decent and all of her couples from that series were well developed and the chemistry was on fire.

The Devil in Me series has none of that. The writing comes across as lazy and almost juvenile - it doesn't feel like I am reading a Suzanne Wright novel.

Cain and Wynter are the biggest problem with this series. They have ZERO chemistry; they act like two business partners, not lovers and they are both wholly unsuited to the other. Wynter's objective was to protect herself and her crew by starting a new life in Devil's Cradle and after a few weeks, her number one priority is Cain?? The man she knows next to nothing about. She blindly accepts EVERYTHING he tells her. Yet, she is supposed to be a take-no-shit gal, unless its from Cain.

The plot was boring me greatly throughout - It has been waylaid in order to push Cain and Wynter's relationship beyond anything else. Not much in this happens. We are all waiting to find out what the hell the deal is with Kali and what she wants with Wynter and also, who is Wynter's father?

When we do find out about what Cain really is, it becomes... anti-climatic to say the least. The question of what Cain was, was supposed to be a high stakes situation that could make or break their relationship, but it fails miserably as Wynter is like.. is that all you are? okay, I accept what you are and I am not afraid. What was the point of building up what Cain was and dragging it out for 2 books if this was the end result?

Then we have the OW drama... well, could it even be called that if they haven't been together in centuries? The bunny boiler trope is getting old when it comes to jilted ex lovers. There really was no valid reason why Ishtar acted the way she did. Every time Ishtar spoke, she came across as a complete idiot. She was utterly 1-dimensional and only wanted Cain because she didn't want anyone else to have him. It was lazy writing and it pushed me further away from the story in general.

The syntax in this series left me scratching my head at times. I would almost wager that this book was written by some sort of software from the structure of some of the sentences I read; you cannot say someone will do their "utmost best" to get something done. It is either utmost or best, the two cannot be put together.

Verdict: A sloppily put together UF, with two mismatched MCs, no high stakes, little plot development, filled with empty sex scenes and regurgitated lines from side characters that were supposed to provide some form of comic relief but instead proved to be frustratingly repetitive and adding nothing to the plot.

The Nightmare in him continues Wynter and Cain’s story and it was EPIC. Cain and his inner monster were never prepared for the need they would feel for Wynter but have absolutely no shame in pursuing her.

“Until Wynter, it had been a long time since he’d truly wanted something. He hadn’t expected that the want would become a need. Or that he would come to crave her with an intensity that was as ferocious as it was shocking.”

But war is brewing and Wynter and Cain must weather the storms coming together despite holding some personal secrets close to their chests. Wynter especially has to decide the future she wants even when it feels like not all her choices are her own.

“Wynter would only ever belong to a man if she allowed it. But Cain wouldn’t rest until she was his on every level. He’d find a way to own the un-own-able.

The Nightmare in Him is full of secrets and revelations, humor and gore and enough steam to fog a room. I loved Cain’s dominance and obsession. His possessiveness and need for Wynter was hot AF.

“What I want from you is nowhere near as reasonable. Oh sure, I want all those things you just listed. But I want more. I want you utterly addicted to me. I want you to be as obsessed with me as I am with you. I want to be the only thing you need.” He scraped his teeth over the crook of her neck. “I want to be the keeper of your soul.”

Cain gave off Knox Thorne vibes and so I was 💯 here for it. Wynter was one badass bitch and her aloofness with those outside her circle, her vulnerability with Cain and her devotion and loyalty to her inner circle was excellently written. She’s a FMC I just love. Per usual with Wright’s MCs, these two were steadfast in their connection and I was happy that the only angst was outside of their romance. These two were just everything.

“Do you know why you exist, Wynter?” he asked, still slicing his dick in and out of her. “You exist to be mine. You were fucking born for me. Born to take my cock.”

The Nightmare in Him perfectly balanced an engaging and action packed plot with Wynter and Cain’s relationship. While this ends on a HFN for Cain and Wynter, (I appreciate this Suzanne) there is so much more to be uncovered and discovered and a war that will change everything. I hate that I will have to wait so long for their story to continue but I just seriously enjoyed the hell out of this.

Wright has seemed to lose her grip over writing. The romance, plot, chemistry and dialogues all were lacking. Lazy and unimaginative. Wonder where is the author who wrote the dark in you series.

All my feelings from book one are the same into book two. This picked up where book one ended. Same characters and a few new ones. My very small hangups in book one continue into book two. I still very much enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to book three.

This was…fine. Very predictable and a bit boring though. I acknowledge and like that SW can be quite formulaic in her writing and characters and often times that’s comforting, but it’s just not hitting the same in this series. The recycled characters and plot just feels inauthentic. Cain and Wynter say and do all the right things, perfectly and quickly. No tension, no surprises, idk. Everything just moves really fast, and while I can get behind instalove I just don’t feel their love the same as other series/characters.

I did like the brief nod to Lucifer, tying in the loose over-arching world building of her series. Wynter’s coven wasn’t as OTT and annoying as I found them last book. I liked that we finally learned almost all of Cain’s secrets…like kinda interesting, honestly🧐 although I would’ve liked to learn more about the deities and Kali’s plan for Wynter, but I guess that’s a next book thing… There was, of course, another big battle at the end 🙄 and I know the next book will have one too…listen, battles are hard to write well and in general I find them very boring, this was no exception. Again, Cain is supposedly the biggest and baddest, but doesn’t do anything interesting in battle plus why the fuck is 7 ancients vs 1 aeon not a walk in the park?? Make it make sense. And then the deaths were sooo anti-climatic after all that build up. Oh and also the person who “betrayed” Cain was also a big let down.

Overall, I just found this book boring and uninspired. It took me a few days to get through and I just didn’t love it…not that I expected to, I just read what SW writes🤷🏼‍♀️ lol. I also have no idea who the future pairings might be in this series so there’s not even anything exciting to look forward to after C&W’s plot wraps up next book…

I had a great time during the first book, but reading this one just felt like déjà vu. I was bored a majority of the time.

There was way too much dialogue (literally pages and pages of dialogue) and not enough action. Too many of the same scenes just slightly tweaked or from a different perspective. You get a chapter about an event, then the following chapter is the characters talking about the same event you already know about from the previous chapter. Too much back and forth. Too much.

Also the lip licking was out of control 👄 why was everyone constantly licking their lips??? And the use of the word ‘thingy’ in a published book is insane to me.

I found Wynter’s coven super funny in the 1st book. This one, not so much… the situations they found themselves in were the exact same as the first book. It was repetitive. We get it, Hattie reads smut. I don’t need multiple pages of dialogue surrounding thoughts about her books while I’m reading THIS book. This isn’t Inception!!

The spicy parts were spicy, but again, repetitive. The same whips and slashes of pleasure / pain over and over. And you guessed it! She passes out almost every time afterwards.

If you wanted more of the same thing you got in Book 1, continue the series. If you were hoping for a ton of development and action here, you won’t really get it.

This is book two in the series, I devoured book one rating it a five-star read and this managed to come a very close second in terms of my overall enjoyment and engagement. Though I've rated this slightly lower it was still a fantastic experience and I'm fully onboard for what's to come in the last book as I believe it's a trilogy.

This begins sometime after the events of book one, there were some secrets revealed previously mostly Wynters and what she is and houses inside herself. Cain though is at least initially, still keeping his reveals close to his chest on account of him being afraid of Wynter's reaction to the truth of him. But we do get to find out more here, as does Wynter and our girl as expected takes things completely in her stride. We also get a lot more world-building and overall explanations of the set-up and the origin story and I was very intrigued by what we discover.

The strife and potential conflict between the Aeons and Ancients intensified and this brought plenty of bloodshed and action resulting in a bloody skirmish brought directly to the Devil's Cradle door. We have betrayal, lots of humour and some delicious chemistry and heat between Cain and Wynter. Saul is also gunning hard for both of them making it his personal mission to avenge his sister and he's relentless.

I'm seriously loving this series and this author is now a definite auto-buy for me. I don't think I've read anything of hers I've disliked yet. I also appreciate that I'm never left hanging with some major cliffy and this book as usual concluded in an HFN finish. I'm also very appreciative of how reasonable and healthy the relationship between Cain and Wynter felt they are a unit, there's no unnecessary game playing and i find it so refreshing. So yep safe to say this was another winner and I'll certainly be Preordering the next book in the series when it becomes available.

I was really on the fence about what rating to give this. The first book was great. It felt like a breath of fresh air after so many long running series. I've read every book by Suzanne Wright, though a few weren't for me I've mostly enjoyed her books. This book wasn't bad, but it also wasn't as good as the first for me.

I found myself starting to skim/skip paragraphs and forcing myself to go back to actually read it. I was getting a bit bored with things because it was just so repetitive from the first book. Suzanne needs to stop relying on running gags so much because nearly every interaction with Wynter and her coven felt like one big running gag set to repeat.

I get that part of it is consistency with characters, but after a while it just felt more like there was a character sheet with three sentences about each character and that's what we got every time we saw them. They had maybe one meaningful conversation and even then it was purely used as a plot device. We learned nothing new of any of her coven members. We learned some new things about the Ancients and Aeons, but I definitely felt like this book neglected her coven.

Overall, I did like the book, but it just didn't hold my attention the way the first book did. I did read it all in one day, but I took several breaks where normally I would not have - even put the book down for two hours once. I think for me the biggest let down of this book is the explanation of what the Aeons and Ancients are. I mostly just wasn't a big fan of the explanation for how Kali fit into their backstory. It felt unnecessary - I would have preferred that Kali was not related to their backstory at all, but maybe it will make more sense when we learn more about Kali in the next book. So I'm reserving judgement on that part.

Depending on how the next two books read, I might take a break from Suzanne and stop buying her books. I have Kindle Unlimited, but I buy the books to support the author and so I can easily revisit the story. I think it may be time to just get her books in Kindle Unlimited first and only buy if I really like the book. I'll finish buying the series I have, but new series I won't purchase.

Dear Lord, well the reason it took me this long to finish this book (LOL, well, for me, it's long, it's not generally long) because I had to go back and re-read the last couple of chapters of the previous book Wicked in me, so then I started The Nightmare in Him and I was again, overwhelmed...

Generally, I liked it, as I usually do, it's just this thing between Ms. Wright's writing and characters and me...something just clicks every time....

But since this is such an immaculately detailed fantasy world I just found it "too much" as times and then I get lost...LOL, yeah, true thing, I get lost in all the detailed descriptions I sometimes lose track of what's really happening...and then, damn....I get frustrated...LOL

So, let's call this a "bad" thing, but basically it's not, so I'll focus on the things I did like/love: the characters, I adore Wynter, she's such a badass heroine, strong, honourable, direct, smart, stoically wise and witty...loved her...

Cain - well, I love him too, but he's a bit of a sidekick, LOL, well that's how I see him, he's a good match for Wynter, for a monster, he's a pretty fine guy....*wink*

Wynter's coven - they are a hoot! I love them each, such sass, and well, Ms Wright has a pretty fascinating sense of humour that she passes on to her characters....so, so well done!

So, yeah, you get the picture...I generally liked the book...

I do have smth against the endings in these books, though LOL, they look abrupt and cut off, you don't really figure out that it's an ending until you go to the next page and it says "acknowledgements"....and I'm like - wait, what?!

So, impatiently waiting for the third book!

It's here....
Suzanne's new book....

You know what that means, right?!

3.5: honestly I'm still having a hard time buying their love, it just seems like revolves around sex and it gets a little repetitive

apart from that, I really liked how the plot of the war evolved and can't wait for the finale

but suzanne's writing is getting monotonous, in vocabulary and plot, she didn't need to explain almost everything again at the beginning of the book because it's the second of the series, the coven "fights" are getting old too

It was fun getting more of the backstory to these two groups, and I generally enjoyed the story, though I feel like there was a dramatic increase in sex scenes. Don't get me wrong, I like the smut, but if it is like 1/3 of the book, it starts to get repetitive.

Wynter is a fun badass. a bit of a Mary Sue, but that's fine with me. Though one thing I want to say ... I've read a couple books now with FMCs that come back to life after they die. It starts out cool, but I think with all the series (most of them have been the phoenix books that were suddenly everywhere over the last few years) it ended up being grating. Like, with all those series, I hit a point where like, the FMC died for the 4th time in the book and it occurred to me that this is actually not that impressive. I read a lot of UF/Fantasy/PNR and somehow, all those FMCs manage to handle their shit without dying 4 times a week, whereas this chick dies constantly. Maybe she should get better at her job.

It doesn't help that it also undercuts dramatic tension, generally. I mean, if she can't die it takes a lot of worry out of encounters. That's not the case with this series, though, because her situation is a little precarious - a goddess is sending Wynter back when she dies, for reasons She hasn't communicated. She could change her mind at any time, or Wynter could do whatever thing (like
Not that I'm bagging on it, it was fun. But seriously, the Aeons are such total asswipes it is pretty unbelievable that anyone thinks otherwise.

I have a problem with this series. Book 1 and book 2 - both of them are writen almost exactly the same way. We get a whacked conversation with Wynter's "coven" followed by over the top sex scene with Cain (also almost identical to every other sex scene) and repeat.
Very little in terms of story is happening.
The second book is much worst. Honestly, I am so bored with this. There is no real feeling of friendship and 'priestess-coven' relationship amongst the Wynter's group of people (just the same crazy, pointless conversations aaand moving on to the effing).
Wynter and Cain? Zero romantic link between them. Only sex. Nothing else. It seems as if Cain's only good quality is giving Wynter big orgasms.

Thank you to Netgalley for gifting this book to me.

Can I start of by saying I absolutely just love suzanne wright's books, I'm genuinely never disappointed. This book carries on from where we left from the 'The wicked in me' Wynter and Cain trying to figure out ways to protect Wynter and everyone around her whilst also trying to build on from their relationship. We get to see their love for each other grow so much in this book and Cain is even more protective in this then the last.

We finally get to find out who Cain is and let me just say It was such a good surprise, Cain is just soo protective of Wynter but he also allows her to be who she is. I love how both Wynter and Cain just embrace who eachother are and don't allow anyone to get into the middle of their relationship.

Now moving on I think Wynters friends might be my favourite crew out of all of Suzanne Wright's books and that's hard to say because I absolutely love the Dark in me series and all those characters but just the way they fight for eachother and will go to the death for Wynter is so amazing. I would be so happy if we got a book for these characters as well, I think Hattie deserves to have a husband that lasts.

I can't wait to see what more holds for this group of people and can't wait to see what lies for Wynter and Cain, I just hope the third book comes out soon because I need it now.

Wynter Dellavale knows that the Aeon's will try to get her again after she corrupted their land. She is protected by her lover and partial soul owner Cain. Cain though wants more with Wynter, he has no intentions of handing her over but his clever witch and her coven wont let Cain keep them hidden away.

With the threat looming towards Wynter since Saul has not returned to the Aeon's and is out for revenge, alliances are tested. An unexpected visit though maybe a game changer for the Ancients. Secrets will be revealed and it could change everything for Wynter.

What a follow up to the first book in the Devil's Cradle. Cain and Wynter are terrific together, there is so much to their secrets they keep and some we revealed. Had several twists and turns I was not sure what would happen. Another terrific story with the band of characters who are fascinating. Can't wait for the next book.

Wow just wow!! I am soooo happy I got to read this as an arc, when I read wicked in me I was captivated by the darkness, desire and ruthlessness of the characters and plot! The nightmare in him was no different, it was amazing to indulge in the character dynamics new and old.

The story picks up with our lovers Cain and Wynter who are recovering and strategising after their last battle with the aeons. The ancients are preparing for the next attack so they can finally escape their jailors once and for all. This book also brings us new characters which hold potential for betrayal or alliances which had me on edge of what outcome we might get.

Again I’m so happy I got to read this, its fun and spicy with an amazing plot that is perfect to indulge in.

* I'd recommend reading the previous book first.

Wynter and her coven of misfits have found a home in the Devil's Cradle and the ancients who rule it. But the Aeon's are still after Wynter and even her relationship with Cain, the most powerful ancient, might not protect her from harm. Especially since one of the Aeons keep spying on her and trying to kill her and he is so elusive that they have trouble catching him. In between Wynter and Cain develop their relationship and she finds out she is not the only one hiding a monster, Cain's might be even worse than hers.

Pro's:
+ The theme of this book, the story inspired on the bible, still feelings quite unique to me. I know we're already far from the source material, but it is different from the other books in this genre that currently are being released.
+ This book has some great pacing, even with the double POV. There is a lot of downtime, but every time you think it will become boring there is another violent action scene to break through the boredom, keeping you wondering what will happen next.

Con's:
- The dialog becomes really repetitive and very fast too. Cain and Wynter both keep thinking in circles and in the end it resolved every time in a heartbeat. It was annoying and it felt like page-filler and I just did not like it. I would have preferred more action scenes if I had a choice.

Well, in comparison to the previous book this was quite the let-down. It was much lower pace and with all the repeated dialogue and the very sparse scattering of the action scenes. I like the uniqueness of using the bible as a source of inspiration for this story, but it was done better in the first book. The interactions between Wynter and her coven are still fun, but we've gotten a lot less of it in this book. This was just not it, it was boring and I hope stuff gets less dragged out then it is in this book. Such a pity.

I received a Netgalley ARC of this book and as always Suzanne wrote a great story. Wynter and Cain’s relationship becomes deeper and closer in this installment. There’s no angst or miscommunications between them that plague some books so that’s a big plus with Suzanne’s writing. Cain definitely doesn’t leave Wynter wondering about there relationship here and I love the dedication he shows to their relationship throughout the story.
This book continues to expand on the story of the ancients and contains plenty of action, magic, zany coven members and sexy moments. Also some characters who seriously need a punch in the tit (men and women alike).
The plot definitely wasn’t anything I was anticipating, so if you think you guessed what’s gonna be revealed, think again.
There were times when I felt like the story dragged a bit and I had to set it down and come back to it later (which never happens with Suzanne’s other series for me, as I usually binge read them). I feel like that happened with book one of this series for me too but I ended up loving it anyway, so maybe it’s just how different these characters are from her other stories that throws me off. In any case, it stretched out the reading for me and I enjoyed it anyway so I still very much recommend it.
I will say that much of the action and all of the reveals happen towards the end so don’t expect answers right away. That’s when it got gripping for me though.

Definitely more to come for this series so if you’re like me you will be awaiting the next installment as soon as you finish The Nightmare in Him.

Quickish 3.5 star Review

Second book in series gives a lot more info the history of Ancients and Aeons. Still can’t quite put my finger on whats missing to make this really work for me but it may be that I want more detail about their day to day life. I like Wynter’s relationship with her coven and I’ll read the next book because I can’t stop. It’s just not my fave series by Ms Wright.

This was an amazing second part to the trilogy. Finished in one day and I’m devastated that I got through it. I just needed it to go on and on. Love Wynter, Cain, the coven, Seth and the Ancients. I’m desperate for the next book. Suzanne Wright has written another winner! Highly recommend.

I am definitely hooked on this new world. Reread the first one to remember everything and then read this one. Things have definitely turned interesting and the story is progressing on a good pace and I can't wait for the next one.

DNF 59% - I liked the first one. I didn’t like that the second one was basically just a retelling of the first one. I’m also annoyed that there IS ALWAYS A JEALOUS AND CATTY FEMALE CHARACTER. I used to love Suzanne Wright’s books but I think I might have to finally stop reading them. 😢
