Eli McKenna has a good life. Starting goalie for the Seattle Kingfishers, a beautiful wife, a lovely home—he even has a great dog. He should be counting his blessings, not wishing for things he can never have.
When Rune Hedaya is traded to the team, Eli knows he's in trouble. Rune is charismatic, handsome, and has a knack for making Eli smile that few possess. But Eli can totally handle Rune staying with him for a month or two while he looks for a place to live, right?
Noemi McKenna never stops moving. If she's not coaching the college's hockey team, she's volunteering at the local shelter, training for marathons, or mentoring troubled youths. But somewhere deep down under everything, she knows something's wrong with her husband, and she's determined to find out what, if she can just get a minute alone with him.
Eli, Noemi, and Rune are going to have to get this sorted before their internal conflicts tear them apart from the inside out, but whether or not they have the courage to go for what they want is another story altogether.
ODD MAN RUSH is a guaranteed happily-ever-after for all parties involved with no cheating, but is not a traditional polyamorous romance.
Noemi is presumably asexual, possibly graysexual, and married to Eli, who admits he's gay, but they don't want a divorce because they're best friends and they love each other???? Dudes, you can love your best friend and not be married to them! A divorce makes most sense, especially when both say they have no desire to have a sexual relationship, they aren't in love with each other and Eli is interested in someone else! Instead Noemi just pushes Eli towards Rune, his gay teammate and lodger, and they fall in love.
What are they going to do if Rune and Eli want to go public and get married themselves?? At no point is it said Noemi and Eli are IN love, they just love each other. I'm Ace myself and this just makes no sense to me - you don't marry someone just because they're your best friend, and you don't then stay married to them when they want to have an actual relationship...
It just seems Noemi is actually quite selfish and is willingly holding Eli and Rune back, no matter how much they all say otherwise, just because Eli and her have a close bond as friends. It doesn't even come across as a poly relationship because Noemi and Eli aren't in love and don't want that kind of relationship with each other! Totally weird one for me. If Noemi and Eli were in love with each other and Eli was bi/pan, and Rune had been added into the relationship then it would have made sense, but as it is Eli is gay, he and Rune are the couple and Noemi is just there...
What a delicious treat of a hockey novella! Before you get all up in arms that there is a female MC in here (you MM purists ;)), know that she is part of an unusual triangle.
She is an asexual woman married to a gay man. Yes, she and the hockey goalie love each other and are best friends, but obviously something is missing.
That something missing comes in the form of a newly traded D-man. A gay D-man.
So, what ensues is that everyone eventually lays their cards on the table and lives HFN.
No heat, but there is some tasty tension between the boys!
My rec? Why not? I’m keeping my eye on this author since this is the second hockey book of hers that I’ve read and enjoyed!
Interesting because I didn’t know how it’d actually turn out. Also, having read BlindSide Hit first, I couldn’t imagine it turning out disasterously for the married couple. I shouldn’t have worried!
Michaela Grey, pleasePleasePLEASE develop out your endings more. We get absolutely nothing after these two doofuses admit their feelings for each other. I’m not even sure we technically get an “I love you too.” Nothing! Like one kiss and a “it’s two months later and they haven’t fucked yet but maybe they will tonight the end.” That’s not enough for me. Not nearly enough.
I thought this was a really interesting tale on MMF (see below for specifics), but it was a tad frustrating that 100% of the conflict was people not acknowledging their feelings/identities to each other.
Overall, the characters were fine, if nothing particularly special. They could have handled a meatier story. It gets the extra half star for pulling of the unusual triad dynamic.
Contains: married MF couple bw closeted gay man and closeted asexual+biromantic woman. Opens up to sexual romantic MM relationship.
Steam: 0.5/5🔥 (very last scene is sort of fade to black?)

Welp. I was a huge fan of the first book in this continuity, Blindside Hit, and had high hopes for this - especially since it contained familiar characters. Unfortunately, most of what I loved about its predecessor was absent here.
Noemi and Eli spend far too much time failing to communicate, only to have the actual communication come out rushed and feeling too convenient to be believable when it finally happens. They're married and apparently never bothered to tell each other that one is asexual and the other gay, which makes their entire relationship feel a bit farcical. (Going into this, I'd wrongly assumed that perhaps they had come out to each other pre-wedding and it just hadn't been covered in the first book because that was Adam and Etienne's love story.) While their love and acceptance of each other felt nice, they had so much emotional turmoil leading to that point that it was just exhausting and made me question the authenticity of the warm-fuzzy feelings.
That's a shame, because I quite enjoy polyships. In other circumstances - such as Rune coming into a relationship where the husband and wife were already aware of each other's sexualities and already open to bringing in another partner - I'd have gobbled this up like the good candy at Halloween. Their dynamic as a triad was cute, the chemistry between them believable, the way Rune slotted into the family wonderful... But, as is, this is the disappointing candy at the bottom of the bowl: it all just didn't feel right due to the prior lack of communication and the rushed nature of being in a novella.
And the melodrama... Dear lord, the fucking melodrama. So much crying. So much angst over secrets only kept because of lacking communication skills. Maybe it would fit in a full length novel, but here it felt like emotional whiplash. I'm sorry, but I'm not believing that people who were just crying like the world had ended are now happily becoming a thrupple a few pages later. I'm not believing that a guy can go from believing in monogamy to accepting an invitation into his crush's marriage on the drop of a dime.
The epilogue doesn't help any, either. In fact, it took this from "cute under other circumstances" to "makes me uneasy" because of a new dynamic introduced to the three-way relationship.
And on top of all that, Noemi's best friend, Juliet, is terrible and drags this book down significantly every time she appears because not only does Noemi deserve a better friend but Eli deserves a wife who doesn't force such a horrible person into his life. Juliet frequently calls her best friend "bitch," nonconsensually psychoanalyzes people she knows don't want to be assessed, and ignores boundaries. All she does is judge people she allegedly cares about and treat Noemi like an idiotic child instead of another adult. It's gross, and I hated how Noemi and even Eli, who hates having her around, kept trying to insist Juliet was a good person. It felt more like the author trying to convince readers, and I didn't believe the hype.
Which... actually, come to think of it, that's basically the theme of this book, for me. A constant struggle between what's told and what's shown, where the two paint vastly different pictures of the circumstances.
I feel disappointed, but I'll probably keep reading in this universe because I know how good it can be and I suspect part of the problem here is that this was a collaboration. But, man, this one stings because I'd loved Noemi in the first book and had been looking forward to reading about her again.
I was glad to read this after the hints of weirdness between Eli and Noemi in Blindside Hit. It's definitely an interesting set up, I haven't run across/read any poly relationship books before. I do wish it hadn't taken Eli and Noemi so long to actually talk to each other, too much page time was spent on their waffling and the romance with Rune was cut very short instead...I wanted to see more of that. I would have also liked to see more of their interactions as a trio, the few pieces where it was happening was super cute.
Sadly this was a great premise with an extremely boring execution and just like, a lot of crying for what was a very low-conflict story and while the emotional payoff was... fine, I just can't imagine giving a queer character the chance to experience a sexually fulfilling relationship for what seemed like the first time and then just... not doing it.
Well, it doesn't work that way. All three are in a relationship, but the two males will have sex only when the female is not there?! I'm a bit narrow - minded, but what you have with Naomi is friendship, not love, dudes.
Eli, a gay man, marries Noemi, an ace woman. They're best friends and Eli assumes attraction will come and Noemi doesn't really enjoy sex. They love each other and sleep in separate rooms. What a pair. When the newest player on the Kingfishers, Rune, needs a place to stay until he finds his own place, Noemi has to move into Eli's room so that Rune can take the spare bedroom. Rune is a breath of fresh air. He's crushing on Eli and loves Noemi. We can all see where this is going. It just takes Eli and Noemi being honest with each other.
This was fine. It wasn't the cutest book I've ever read and maybe was a bit overly dramatic at points but it was nice. The ace rep felt, honestly, quite a bit like my own experience which is pretty cool.
I think the one thing I didn't fancy in this book was that both Eli and Noemi went into a marriage lying to each other but I really loved Eli and Rune together. I really wanted more of their story.
I wanted to like this book, as it had some great parts to it, but unfortunately it fell a little short for me. There was a lot of focus on both Eli and Noemi having something they both wanted to talk to the other about, dragging that out a little. By the time they finally have the talk and come to a happy understanding, there really wasn't much room left to show any kind of romance and relationship progression between Eli and Rune. It was sort of skipped and then the book just finished. I've also noticed that in this authors books she always seems to throw in a moment of one of the guys stuttering. It seems to come out of nowhere and for no reason, but appears in all the books i've read of hers so far. Just seems a little odd, but also increases the feeling of these characters/books not being so different from each other.
This is cute and sweet and non-traditional fun...the problem is that Bishop tried to jam way too much non-traditional fun into a novella with zero character developments. I was left with a sense of incompletion.
I’m sure this author just makes her endings like this to wind people up. What the hell kind of ending was that?
“Rune held on tight, the happiness within him threatening to lift his feet right off the ground. Never in his life had he imagined this was how things would work out, but it was better, somehow, standing there in both Noemi’s and Eli’s arms, surrounded and sheltered in their love.”
This! This is where it should have ended, but no! She then gives you this paragraph separately and ends it there?? WHY?!
“Are you coming?” Eli shouted from the hall, and Rune shook himself. “Almost ready!” he called back, and scrambled into his clothes.
I’m laughing at myself because I’m not sure why I’m so irritated, but I’m very irritated!
- Ok the story. In the previous book, when Noemi was talking to Adam, I thought it sounded like she was accusing Eli of not sleeping with her, and because we know he’s gay, I thought, well, yeah, of course. But no, Noemi is the one who doesn’t want sex and Eli questions himself because she doesn’t want him. Yet, he doesn’t want her either because he’s gay. It’s all very merry-go-round.
It’s not a traditional love story, but I can see how it would work. Getting emotional love from one person and sexual love from another. Not sure if I could do it, but each to their own.
It does read a little bit selfish. Both from Eli and Noemi. Noemi because she can still have Eli in her life and be his best friend without marriage, and Eli because he expects Rune or any other future partner to put aside their dreams of marriage etc, because he refuses to divorce someone he can barely share a bed with because she likes her own.
Aah, I don’t know. It was cute and endearing at times, but at the same time, made little sense and felt a bit like a stretch of reality.
Either way, I wouldn’t mark it more cos the ending annoyed me too much 😂
I'm very torn on what type of rating to give this book. Let me start off by stating I read this book after reading Blindside Hit. (On the amazon blurb there was a reading order so I decided to start with the first book.) I enjoyed Blindside Hit so much and was excited to meet both Noemi and Eli, knowing they would be in this book. I was also EXTREMLEY CURIOUS by Odd Man Rush's blurb and how it stated " ODD MAN RUSH is a guaranteed happily-ever-after for all parties involved with no cheating, but is not a traditional polyamorous romance. "
I will admit that this book kept me flipping pages. I loved discovering the different sexualities and trying to figure out how they would work as a throuple. But then as soon as we figured out each character's role in this trio, the book ended. It wasn't steamy at all and I feel like this book needed it. I also wanted to see at least a chapter or two showing us that they ALL three truly did fit in this relationship. Overall I give it 3.5 Stars. I'm rounding up to 4 since the book kept me intrigued.
That being said I just finished book 3 and 4 from the reading list. Both of those get 5 stars from me.
Author's recommended reading order according to blurb on Amazon:
I wondered if Eli and Noemi would end up with their own book and was pleasantly surprised to see that they did! Docking a star for a few reasons: no bang on the page, and I was really looking forward to see how it played out between Eli and Rune (speaking of Rune — loved his back story of Syrian immigrants parents and being born in Germany). Second reason, I really wanted to see how the dynamic played out between the three of them further into the future than 2 months of 2nd base. Like, do they move to a bigger house and all get their own rooms? Or does Eli go back and forth? How does her family take it? How does Adam and Etienne react? Do they come out to the team with their unconventional relationship? I dunno, just really wanted to see the three of them at least 18 months into the future and firmly established in their relationship.
Short story short (because it’s a novella) : boy loves girl, girl loves boy, boy loves boy, girl loves both boys (chastely bc she’s asexual and the boys are gay). No sex scene btw the boys, bc the heart of the matter is about thinking and loving outside the box. What they do btw the sheets is irrelevant to the story.
Fine writing, nice characterizations, no unnecessary angst nor side stories. It could have been a full-blown novel, the subject matter is good and broad enough to put plenty of flesh (and muscles, because hockey) on the bones. Warmly recommended.
I read this book in one sitting. And by that, I mean I sat down to start reading and simply couldn’t move until I finished. I thought this was such a beautiful exploration of various sexualities and relationships. It was wonderful to see asexual representation in an M/M novel! I have already read it again, and I think Eli is possibly my favourite of all of Michaela’s characters. I genuinely cannot recommend Michaela’s books enough. As soon as I started reading I was hooked and couldn’t put them down.
When I was first introduced to Eli and Noemi in Blindside Hit I had a terrible feeling about how their story would be resolved, and that they were headed for heartache. While the way everything was resolved was perhaps a bit too neat and tidy, to the point of being cheesy, who doesn’t like a bit of cheese occasionally? I think it could have definitely benefitted from some steamier content to finish.
I read this as per the reading order recommendation. I honestly found this to be a bit drawn out for even a novella. It read slow for me and a let down from the first book. This one doesn’t have any sex in it so if that’s your jam you’re not going to find it in this one just some sexual tension.
It was cute and I enjoyed the characters and the author made their non-traditional relationship work but see no reason as to why this would have to be read for the 2nd book to be understood.
Not the turnout I was expecting but we knew something was up with Eli & Neomi’s wedding in Blindside Hit. Seeing the love Eli and Nomes have for each other is so sweet. Their love overpowered honesty before they got married but they realize they don’t want to be separated, they just want more. Rune can give that to Eli and Eli and Rune can be what Neomi needs. Surprising outcome but so sweet.
The only reason this isn’t a 5* is because I need more!! I would have looooved this to be a full length novel! I love a great poly book and this one is no different, even though it is one I haven’t read about before. It’s got a different twist and I love that twist! Maybe one of those days you’ll write a full length of their story?? Please? Would highly recommend!
I really enjoyed this interesting take on polyamoury. Reading the description I was so afraid it'd be a cheating book, or one with lots of horrible guilt trips. I was pleasantly surprised that it was nowhere near that angsty or icky (I hate cheating stories). I do wish it was longer, and a few things filled out, but I was contently happy with it as is, too.

I love a book that questions the universality of the monogamous nuclear family paradigm! The characters are sweet and loving, and I'm left here, during shelter-in-place, with a giant smile and a warm feeling in my heart. Thanks for this, Michaela and Ariel!
Stayed up way too late to finish this one. To those of you that only read M/M, relax, you will love this novella. I’m really loving this series, and I’m on to read the next one.
After reading Blindside Hit I did wonder if there was something more to Eli. I loved this novella. Eli and Nome are best friends, they're married but they are not lovers. Enter Rune. He mixes things up a bit. There is no cheating, just a discovery for all parties.
