“Finally. A well-written and engaging book that provides honest and practical guidance to unlock what’s standing between you and your best self.” —MARY MCDOWELL, CEO, Mitel Networks

“COMPOSURE’s stories are so compelling and illustrative of similar experiences I’ve had as a female executive or have heard all too often from others. THIS IS ESSENTIAL READING. You have the power in you, and Kate helps you tap into it.” —SALLY THORTON, CEO, Forshay

As boardrooms inch their way toward diversity, women and those in other underrepresented groups who break into executive, managerial and entrepreneurial ranks step into a spotlight that puts additional pressure on already demanding work and personal lives. Feeling the need to prove ourselves, this kind of pressure can zap our confidence, leading to perfectionism, self-judgment, a feeling of being overwhelmed, and burnout.

While workplace pressures are real, much of the pressure we feel is self-imposed. A lack of confidence in our own abilities can make us feel like we have to work twice as hard, and even then don’t deserve the success we achieve. Within this unhealthy dynamic, even the most well-intended feedback can feel like judgmental criticism. When we feel anxious and doubtful, belief in ourselves disappears and we lose our composure.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. The key is to find and maintain a powerful internal presence regardless of the external pressures brought on by work or home life. Like any important skill, composure is something you can learn and cultivate by creating strong personal boundaries, building confidence, developing self-awareness, and aligning yourself with your values.

Using proven techniques, relatable case studies, and comprehensive exercises, this book shows you how to compose yourself to elevate your presence at work, home, and, ultimately, within yourself, no matter how hectic or overwhelming your life may feel.

Drawing on more than twenty years of experience as corporate executives, and executive coaches, and their expertise in neurolinguistics, trauma and PTSD therapy, Kate Purmal and her colleagues Lee Epting and Joshua Isaac Smith deliver a unique approach to navigating work environments that don’t feel psychologically safe.

Initial chapters provide great detail and definition on issues and mindsets that hold back high achievers. Many of the subsequent chapters provide good ideas for shifting your mindset and perspective to better serve your goals and communication to executives in the corporate world. When it got to the executive presence it felt more like an ad and a high level summary of their coaching business. I didnt get any major techniques on how to develop "composure". The other thing that was really tough is SO MANY of the example people already made it to the executive level and are just trying to make it to the last rung. What about those of us who have been in a lateral promotion cycle for decades? I keep looking for resources that teach people how to stand out in a pool of contributors and break into management, especially when you have a toxic manager but this book does not provide that.

amazing guide on how to become more confident inside and outside

“Composure: The art of executive presence” by Isaac Smith, Kate Purmal and Lee Epting is one amazing guide on how to become more confident inside and outside. It is not just about seeming confident to the world, but about actually being sure of your capabilities and stop doubting the value you bring to your workplace. This book is all about self-love, setting boundaries, having self-awareness and having composure. It is basically about surviving the reality of this world, where many people work in places where they might feel stressed, out of place or just not good enough.
I personally really enjoyed reading this, as it does in fact help you to build up your confidence with proven techniques.

Composure: The Art of Executive Presence is a book that shows what it means to have executive presence. I am to believe that it's a book that finds itself between the self-help and business genre.

My belief for this is due to the fact that the authors have experience as coaching consultants. They know what moves people's minds and why they could be feeling less confident or motivated in their day-to-day life. On one hand, they give their experience and perspective on how to be more "executive present" on employees, meaning more confidence, motivation, management, etcetera. On the other hand, this could also be helpful for the average person looking for success and control over their lives, but who doesn't really know how to achieve it.

What I mean by this is that sometimes people lack confidence or motivation and, sometimes, they just don't know how to overcome that. With that in mind, this book can really help everyone in regard to this big topics that are success, self-control and happiness, from a CEO to a stay at home mom.

The author defines Composing as "the creative act we bring to our clients... ". Clearly, this refers to teaching clients, corporate or not, new solutions and practices to have a better hold or control over their lives. As I wrote before, this book offers a physiological perspective on the why of the chaos in our lives and how we can fix that.

The book also gives a lot of thought to the Impostor Syndrome. Many corporate men and women suffer from it, lacking from self-determination, affecting eventually their happiness. Therefore, the author gives an insight on some key abilities to have more executive presence, what are the three phases that people go through having Impostor Syndrome and how to break through.

All in all, I would recommend this book to anyone. However, for those struggling with stress and anxiety, it could give a new perspective on what those factors that are causing them harm are, and maybe understand themselves a little more.

Composure was written by Kate Purmal, Joshua Isaac Smith and Lee Epting and is an engaging and pragmatic career handbook for women in leadership roles.

The opening chapters discuss behaviours associated with Imposter Syndrome. This book compiles stories of women overcoming workplace difficulties, subverting cultural expectations, and aligning their work with their values. Every section characterises and draws forward the utilisation of expertise or impeding idea connected with women's battles in the work environment. The main points addressed include imposter syndrome, values-based leadership, and unpaid labour imbalances. The author's ideas stream cohesively, working in intricacy as the book advances.

Composure shares stories of women who lack confidence and refuse to go after positions they are experienced and qualified for or request higher wages. These women make excuses and consolidate with convincing information to justify their Imposter Syndrome. The authors bring a complete, definite picture of the contemporary landscape of women’s leadership. However, every story is relevant to the comparing section's motivation in a broad sense; a portion of the stories run long, are repetitive and incorporate unessential subtleties.

The authors provide definitions, explanations, stories and case studies about Imposter Syndrome, Self-Determination Theory and other topics with examples of how to identify the behaviours that comprise these. Tips and recommendations on improving body language and being more authoritative and approachable are added value to this motivational and insightful book. It is an unapologetically empowering book and will be helpful to women from all walks of life searching for their passion. The techniques described in this book include self-exploration and learning to look at problems in a new light. It's an illuminating, well-researched and remarkable book. The insights it offers allow examining the personal effects every individual surround themselves with and perhaps finding insight into who they are as members of society.

I’m giving this three stars because I think there are people who will enjoy it, and may even get some helpful tools from it. It wasn’t for me. My personal rating is one star.
I am a technician by nature and trade. I live in an immutable universe where no amount of spin or wishful thinking will change reality. I’ve actually had to explain to management, that I understood how much better it would be if it was the less expensive component that was broken and had the system down. And no, it doesn’t mean I’m not a team player because I’m insisting that we’re not going back online until we replace that expensive component - the singed one that has the flames and smoke coming out of it.
This is a collection of the experience of people in the tech industry who used the “looking at things a new way” mindset to improve their situation. Despite the assertions that these people are innovators in the tech fields, I seriously any of them have ever actually written a line of code or soldered a component onto a board. I suspect these are management people with no dirt under their fingernails. I’ve heard the principals propounded in this book in all of my management classes, but none of my technical classes.
This is not a book on dealing practically with technical problems. It’s a psychology class for management.

They make readers understand that composure is cultivated by strong skills of confidence, personal boundaries and staying in tune with values. This guide also highlights the negatives which one should avoid such as doubting self-ability, being judgmental and critical which will only harbor doubts and anxiety making us loose composure. I know it's extremely difficult to maintain healthy mindset in this competitive world which adds on pressure of extreme level. This guide is extremely helpful to tackle these pitfalls with proven case studies and guidance of well experienced authors. There are exercises too as an added bonus. As a woman I can completely relate and get help from this read. I am glad to have found it.

Once You Learn the Secrets, you can Become the Best Version of Yourself.

California author Kate Purmal et.al, presents a very powerful book that is intended to serve as a guide to women in leadership positions. The book sets the premise of the message the authors wish to pass, which is composure. It is one topic that has the potential to change how we approach others and build self-confidence.
The book uses proven techniques, ideas, exercises, and case studies to teach readers how to compose their selves at home and work to create more presence. There is no doubt that with the right composure, you can navigate even the toughest situation with ease. The author clearly states that workplace pressure is very much real and can take a toll on you. However, with the right internal disposition, dealing with external pressures becomes much easier.

Since I began to read this book, I've found the strength I need to push on no matter the circumstances. I must admit that it has been very helpful. One thing about Composure is that the authors don't just assume, their ideas are drawn from years of experience. It's one investment I was glad I did. A very helpful book.

Composure, The Art of executive Presence by Kate Purmal is an extraordinary leadership book.

She has extensive experience working with executives and teams to help them develop their leadership skills and navigate change in the business world, so this book is the perfect tool with all the information she has been getting through her experience.
This book helped me to understand that we are more powerful than we believe and that we don’t need to be or do everything in a perfect way. With this book, I found out all the impostor behaviors that I had in several moments at work that now I know I need to modify in order to improve my performance.

Perfection. Fear. Some struggle with both or just. This struggle is being looked at within the book Composure: The Art of Executive presence. A woman who had a thriving career. Though everything looked great on the outside, she was struggling on the inside. As this became a struggle, she sought help. I believe many can relate. Many want to be involved with many activities. They are successful but yet there is no happiness. Like this woman, she found she found validation through working. I think that some individuals want to work and do many things to find their worth. Sometimes I have done things to get encouragement or believe I am worth something based on doing. I think that people will be able to relate to this story and find great wisdom through her journey!

When employees are being pushed, when the work environment is unhealthy or stressful and there's not much to change about that, there is one thing they can definitely change: the approach they take to it.

That's the premise behind "Composure: The art of executive presence". Kate Prumal and her colleagues Isaac Smith and Lee Epting use their years of experience in the subject to teach the reader a way to solve work-related issues.

In my opinion, the internal change the authors propose is difficult to achieve, but completely necessary, since you are taking control over situations otherwise impossible. I do recommend reading this book to people going through a rough time at work, it can change the way they react to stressful situations.

A very empowering book.

This is a very empowering book, especially for those who are in management or aspiring to be in management positions. Composure: The Art of Executive Presence is a very well written piece that I can simply relate to. Sometimes, we are our worst critic. It is very well written and easy to understand. This book helps the reader like me to feel more empowered and confident in front of my peers or my boss. Each chapter of this book helps you navigate from the source of why confidence is lacking inside up to the part on how to build confidence, apply your strategy and live by it . I would definitely recommend this to those who have lost confidence in themselves or looking for that little push!
I would definitely recommend this book.

This book helped me a lot to understand some things that were happening to me and that, without noticing them, were draining all my energy making me feel exhausted all the time.
Since I started reading it, I realise that although some work spaces are stressful and demanding, the greatest challenges are created by ourselves whenever we assume more responsibilities than the ones we can manage to demonstrate our capacity.
This great work is written by two women who are leaders in their works and who have decided to show that women have to work harder than men even when they occupy the same position in the same workspace. I really recommend this book that invites us to reflect about the challenges we have to face in the work realm.

Composure is a book that departs from the thought that even though workplace pressures are real, much of the pressure we feel is self-imposed, what leads us, among other things, to lose our composure. Thus, Purmal comes in handy here by providing us with techniques, studies, and exercises, among other things that can help us “compose” again.
This book is fantastic! It helps us see things we were definitely never taught at school. It's about
how to understand your emotions, find and sustain love, succeed in your career, fail well and overcome shame and guilt we may sometimes feel. It's also about letting go of the myth of perfect working life in order to achieve genuine emotional maturity. Loved it!

This practical book carefully examines how to deal with internal pressure in different moments of our life. The authors made an amazing job by showing the reader to replace inadequacy and self-doubts with confidence. They strongly believe that the first step is always to change our point of view. After reading this masterpiece, I could understand that things change when I change the way I look at them.
Moreover, the graphics always help me to understand better, and in some pages, there are visual aids to explain things in a simpler way.
“Composure” is also filled with techniques, strategies and comprehensible activities which are more than useful. Some of the tips provided are common sense points but very often forgotten.

A compulsory read for those in the business

Kate Purmal, Lee Epting and Isaac Smith got together to compose this masterpiece called “Composure: The Art of Executive Presence”. The title says it all. In just around three hundred pages, these authors taught me how to make the most of my appearance and be able to give the best impression when it comes to the business industry.

It is always good to align oneself, I mean, to become our force and motive. Our image can give us power or make us powerless. People often treat us as they see us, so if we look good, we are going to be well treated.

This seems superficial, but there is more than that in this book and for this reason I give it five stars. This is a must for the business world.

Composure: The Art of Executive Presence by Kate Purmal is a guide not just for females at the height of their industry, but for all that need a study in personal boundaries and self-awareness. I recently had a supervisor I was constantly in awe of, because every movement she made was controlled and decided, and she was the most respected of anyone around. Coming across this book, I thought of her, and appreciated the exercises and examples oriented toward choosing your responses rather than having reactions and falling back on imposter behaviors—things that affect others’ images of you and trust in you as a leader. It’s a honest and straightforward approach to a topic that deserves attention.

Reading Composure: The Art of Executive Presence felt like a great way to celebrate confidence and and accept, embrace, and learn from your vulnerability as part of personal growth. Kate Purmal and her co-writers Lee Epting and Joshua Isaac Smith have done this book in a remarkable way. I love that it represents stories of different women who strived hard to be at their best in a corporate world. For me their stories are truly relatable. I work in a corporate world and I can say that at times, I feel how they feel-- how they struggle to compose themselves especially when pressure calls for it. I have learned quite a lot from this book and somehow, it made me realize the importance of composure and confidence wherever you are, not just in the workplace.

This is a timely and extremely important book in today’s climate! Kate Purmal explains how marginalized groups (which includes anyone who makes up the minority in a field dominated by others, such as Black people in a predominantly white setting, women in a field dominated by men, but also men in fields dominated by women, etc.). She describes the barriers to success that these individuals face in their careers, some of which are actually self-imposed. While in no way minimizing the real challenges minority groups face in workplace settings, Purmal gives a brilliant breakdown of how we often sabotage ourselves, how Imposter Syndrome is very real, and how to overcome these challenges with what she terms “Executive Presence”. Cannot recommend enough!!

A must-read! Absolutely recommended
I started reading “Composure” and it turned out to be a gem for women at work. It is an interesting guide penned by Kate Purnal. Thanks to her experience, she is able to share practical techniques and pieces of advice that will help women strike a balance between life and work, which is something quite difficult for human-beings in general.
Through diagrams, resources and her personal story, she compiled a guide which is full of wisdom.
It´s a well-written and developed guide that will teach readers about the importance of proactivity, responsibility and personal growth. Even though there were some new terms, I was able to understand the main points and follow the author's ideas. I learned a lot and I highly recommend it.

Composure is the perfect book if you are feeling a lack of confidence with anxiety and stress at work or in life. Authors Kate Purmal, Joshua Smith, and Lee Epting teach us, through many different stories and theories, how we can face these issues and become confident in our skills and knowledge. Each chapter is easy to understand, they explain each theory very well with examples and they have a workbook to help you during the reading. Even when the book focuses on women and how we can empower ourselves, I feel like this book is for everyone because there are times in our lives when we feel that way. I like the way the authors help you put together a complete plan for confidence, composure, and overall credibility. I highly recommend this book.

“Composure: The Art of Executive Presence” is a must-read book for people in any executive position, and indeed, in all walks of life. From the very beginning, it is an absolute eye-opener for anyone suffering from self-doubt or insecurity. It plunges right into case studies which help high achievers who have lost their sense of self-worth and follows on with a most invaluable chapter about the Imposter Syndrome. Each chapter after that is full of useful stories of personal growth and improvement. Success is not always in doing a lot, but in being able to say “no” to too large a workload. The part on trauma is priceless and is followed by several upbeat chapters of success. I highly recommend this self-help book.
