What would change if Harry asked Hermione to the Yule Ball? H/Hr RobSt's first fanfic Rated: Fiction T Chapters: 30 Words: 141,452 Status: Complete Fanfiction ID: 4357909 Pages Calculated based on 390 words per page
I'm glad it's stated up front that this was RobSt's first attempt at writing fanfic, because it's definitely quickly obvious that this is a big step down in the level of maturity and polish from the author's later works, in every way — from proofreading (noticeably more typos, word errors, etc. — though still/already better than a lot of fics [on FF.N]), to writing style, to the major narrative choices of interactions and plotting.
Nevertheless, it's fairly entertaining, with some uncommon and clever ideas, including among the plans they make to improve Hogwarts, and to better connect their two worlds, magical and non-magical.
I feel like a meanie to pile onto a "first fic", but objectively, it'd probably only be about 2.67 Goodreads stars from me.
The "content warning" is for some severe (though not canon-atypical) violence, and a couple unpreventable OC deaths, and for one terrible secret that is discovered.
It all felt like things happened in a bit of a perpetual rush, with magic rapidly maturing our young leads, some conflicts and crises dealt with rapidly via overpowered protagonists, emotions at times excessively *mercurial* (you'll realize if you decide to read it why that's a pun, too 😉), i.e. rapidly changing, and told in a style not smooth enough to carry all of it off convincingly.
Voldemort is dealt with early, Dumbledark being a more central antagonist, with several Weasleys' support of his plans being a more complex and painful issue than often presented. I'll give a bit of a spoiler, though, and say it's pro-Ginny, without any romantic connection on Harry's part.
The Grangers, Dobby and Winky as role models promoting elven (not elvin 🙄) liberation, goblins, and some former foes — or long-oppressed female kin thereof — who are canny enough to see and believe both the carrot and the stick Harry and his Lady present to them, join the leads to become a powerful force united for change, with an agenda of equality and the right to choice.
It's also got a late-developing RPF thread, with non-magical British royalty coming into play, but I really don't to spoil too much of the various events throughout the story. (The soul-bonding happens so early it'd be silly not to shelve it that way, though.)
I'll admit I started it but was not sufficiently committed to finishing it at first, revisiting a couple shorter favorite fics by others before returning. I don't regret reading it, and it did have a satisfying conclusion, but I'm not sure I'll ever be in the mood to reread the whole thing. If you're only looking for stories that feel publication-worthy, just give it a pass, but if you're fine with some tropey fic drama and smiles, you may want to give it a try.
Interesting take on the "soul bond" idea, got the events of the books out of the way quickly and then onto completely new ventures instead of just retelling the books slightly differently.
