The world has changed and new rules are required. More Rules for Life is the perfect companion to Kitty Flanagan's bestselling 488 Rules for Life.
More Rules for Life is the latest collection from comedian and rule-maker Kitty Flanagan. Following the success of her bestseller, 488 Rules for Life , Kitty realised there was still a lot of work to be done.
What if there were people who didn't know that you're supposed to take the lettuce off the sandwich before toasting it? Or that you should never make eye contact with someone while eating a banana? What if young people didn't realise that TikTok is not actually a job? And what about old men on ladders? Someone needs to tell those guys to get down.
Inspired by a rapidly changing world, this special volume includes a whole batch of new rules, as well as some very specific rules for our pandemic-riddled society. Written for the enthusiasts and true believers, More Rules for Life contains all the information you need to help others be their least-annoying selves.
Praise for 488 Rules for Life :
'Kitty Flanagan may have saved us all. It's so simple, buy the book, laugh out loud, become a better person.' - Jason Alexander
As a huge fan of Flanagan’s 488 Rules for Life, this sequel of sorts was a no-brainer.
Adding to the rules of life so brilliantly catalogued in book one, this follow-up for “special enthusiasts” provided more relatability, life lessons and plenty of laughs.
It also acknowledged a whole new list of protocols and etiquette for good folk to implement in this pandemic world we now find ourselves living in.
Most of it remains common knowledge and decency laid bare, but there are for sure, many personal preference rules that are highly amusing and often things to consider in one’s own life.
Like its predecessor, this book was a joy to read.
I guess I'm an "enthusiast" as I quite enjoyed Flanagan's first book called 488 Rules for Live.
I quite like Flanagan's humour, she's sharp, sarcastic and very opinionated. :-)
This was a much shorter volume, which was very easy to digest. I haven't been reading much, I was done with this book in 2 hrs while I was pottering around the kitchen, so it was a welcome diversion.
Flanagan's narrating was excellent, her tone did add something extra, I could easily imagine her raising her eyebrow and looking over her glasses and saying "really, people?"
Geez Kitty, how much did the ABC pay you to write this book? A second rule book that wasn’t necessary. The length of the book shows me that this was written for one reason and one reason only, to push an agenda.
I’m fed up with authors squeezing politics into their books. It’s getting that way where I want to avoid new books just in case the author has included their own agenda or political disinformation. It doesn’t make for fun reading, it makes me angry which then takes me out of the story and spoils the entire book for me.
And by the way KITTY the man did not punch the horse at the protest. Get your facts straight and stop spreading lies enough damage has been done by the mass media and people like yourself. The fckn media doctored the video and the photos. I saw the real footage and he only lightly pushed the horse out of the way otherwise the horse would have trampled him, the police officer on that horse wouldn’t let up, the officer was doing it on purpose to start a riot but the media won’t show that or talk about it as the mass media is not designed to ask intelligent questions, it is aimed to satisfy you with a simplistic/cursory answer so that you can move on and not worry about it, so you can stay clueless and just be a good sheep. News needs some sort of sensationalism to be released to the public so it can grab the attention of viewers. And it did just that didn’t it? with most people not questioning what they saw, if it’s on the news then it must be true.
We need more critical thinkers.
Sorry folks, rant over. I just can’t stand the lies.
I was a huge fan of the original edition of this series 488 Rules for Life because I am deeply into people acting and behaving as they should. And the following year (years? Did I truely read the original two years ago? What is time?) has proven that people truely have no idea that they live in a SOCIETY and being ~that~ person isn't as cool and edgy as they think it is. (Get vaxxed. Wear your mask properly. Don't take your issues out on service/retail/literally anyone employed to help you. Don't be that arsehole.)
This update, with a few more rules, is excellent. If you know someone who constantly bemoans the lack of consideration other people have for everyone else in the world I would definitely invest in get the double pack of books (the original and this new edition) for a present. They'll find themselves energetically agreeing and laughing.
This was a fun, one sitting read. And sometimes that's all that's needed.
i feel a bit like this is cheating bc i read this in like less than an hour but idc its a book and i read a book so i have achieved something it was decent! i definitely liked the first one better but the vibes were here
Reread 05/08/2023: No matter how many times I read Kitty's rules, they never get old. Mum says I can't add it to goodreads again, a) because of its size (at a mere 119 pages) and b) I have already read it ('cheating'), but if it's on here, I'm going to add it.
Reread 04/02/2022: The rules hit different when Kitty brings them to life.
Initial Read 07/11/2021: I hate reading about COVID but for Kitty I'll make an exemption. I was laughing out loud from the very first page and cannot wait for the audiobook to be released so I can read and experience it all over again
I love Kitty Flanagan's style of humour. I miss her segments on The Weekly and The Project, and I really enjoyed her original book - 488 Rules for Life. Obviously seeing there was a follow-up, I had to give it a go!
The book was as amusing as the first, in that while I wasn't laughing out loud constantly, there were a lot of smiles, sagely nods, and general agreement on how hopeless some people! It was considerably shorter which was a shame, but not unexpected, and it certainly made for an easy read.
Overall the book was amusing, relatable, and a little informative. If you like Kitty's humour/style, if you enjoyed the first book, or if you just love rules, I would recommend this!
Honestly this was definitely better than the first of the pair - to me at least. A lot of them I could relate to or laughed at because I had friends and family the rules blatantly applied to. Like Rule 516 for my mum; You must be in the same room to converse. You cannot shout at someone who is a different part of the house and expect them to hear you. & Rule 518 for my dad; Resist the urge to share your ancestry.com research. 😂
I loved 488 Rules for Life so I was excited to see a sequel. But while this was still a fun and enjoyable read, I didn't love it as much.
I feel like this book was more about mocking and making fun of people than being a useful guide with must-know tips, despite some funny parts. And although I don't mind reading about Covid-19, a few of the jokes here were quite uncalled for.
Maybe my reading tastes have changed over the years? A quick and interesting read nevertheless, just not one I would rush to recommend.
If you're onto a good thing, why not push a little further? This is a slimmer addition to the first volume. Just as witty as expected but not quite as entertaining as the first volume... less pages = fewer laughs perhaps? Either way, it was an OK read but this series has now jumped the shark and a third volume will not be read or reviewed by me... sorry Kitty, I still think you're funny :)
Another, smaller book of amusing rules from Kitty Flanagan. These are based a lot around covid and some felt like I’d read them before. If you enjoyed her first one, you’ll like this one.
I need a short book for short flight, this looked as if it would fit the brief. No, it only lasted half the flight, 45 minutes. I have seen Kitty in a live show and enjoyed her style, this was a bit lacking in humour. There was ample opportunity to really ramp up the wit. Still enjoyed, worth a 'quick' read.
More Rules for Life: A special volume for enthusiasts is the cheeky follow-up to comedian Kitty Flanagan's popular book 488 Rules for Life. Full disclosure, I haven't gotten around to the first one yet, but after hearing Kitty chat about it on telly, I couldn't resist grabbing this sequel off the library shelf. First impressions – I love the cover. It's like a perfect snapshot of Kitty's vibe: easy-going, irreverent, and the kind of auntie you'd want to have a beer with.
The book itself is a riot. I had moments where I was chuckling out loud. But don't be fooled, because tucked between the laughs is a treasure trove of real-life wisdom. It's like Kitty Flanagan took all the nonsense of modern life and put it through a filter of sharp wit and sharpie-like satire. It's your cool auntie's guide to navigating the madness, far more entertaining and enjoyable than that other famous etiquette book (you know the one, but it's slipped my mind). And the reviews I’ve read say the first book is even better!
My only criticism is that the book is a tad on the short side, but others might see that as a selling point. More Rules for Life is short enough to consume in one sitting (perfect if you’re busy or just a casual reader) or you can stretch out the fun by reading it one conveniently compiled section at a time. Best of all, Kitty's voice shines through loud and clear. After reading this, you can bet I'm on the hunt for the first instalment.
there aren't many people who could make me literally laugh out loud while reading something like this but ofc kitty flanagan did (love u kitty flanagan cannot wait for the next season of fisk) (also sorry i am one of those people who hasn't read your first 488 rules yet lol)
(with that being said, only giving this 3 stars bc it doesn't really have enough of anything to give it more than that lol)
some rules everyone needs to remember 491 don’t go on about golf 493 hunting is not a sport 508 not every band needs to get back together 524 get to the good bit 548 not everything needs to be monetised 553 put some thought into the vegetarian option (correct i do not want any stuffed mushrooms capsicums or pumpkin chunks) 570 dont use the word hubby (this is just bc i hate straight people x) 573 wear a mask (!!! yes, even in 2024 besties) 585 spiralisers are not magic wands 586 cauliflower is not rice 589 a mejdool date is not a dessert (honestly just the entire food stuff section) 596 have an idea (too many podcasts!!) all of zoom etiquette pandemic rules for being businesses and celebrities (lol at the woolies CEO emails) mandatory vasectomies at fifty (iconic way to end the book)
some things for me to remember 530 dont eat your meals in the bedroom 532 not everything is a toxic message 545 avoid single-use appliances (thank u for the anti-influencing kitty) 556 no one really believes “OMG! i just saw this msg now for some reason"
When I read 488 Rules for Life a few years ago, the idea that life could be summed up into a set number of rules seemed ludicrous. After finishing the book, I I understood why the title was chosen and laughed my head off at my own mental boundaries that didn't need to be considered at all (Ie. it is just a title, don't think too hard).
When a follow- up novel was announced and the title contained "for enthusiasts"...I could not wait to read it!
I have laughed an scowled my way through this second novel, the pandemic sections on how to wear face masks correctly (that means you cover your mouth AND nose) to how to properly say goodbye to friends at the end of a night out (check which direction everyone is heading before saying goodbye to someone who will be walking in exactly the same direction as yourself) has been a brilliant addition. Big corporations don't need to be our friends sending out emotive emails of "we're all in this together" and reminding us to turn our cameras off in Zoom meetings while we eat is just common sense that i can even follow on my worst day when I am tired, hungry and a little over people talking in general
A light- hearted read that is worth reading in full :)
As a huge fan of the OG 488 rules for life, I was more than a little pleased to see that Kitty had released a sequel of sorts, particularly when the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns (especially here in Melbourne) had a lot of us feeling glum and even down right miserable. This little book was just the pick me up I needed. In Kitty's usual comedic style it had me laughing in no time. Pretty sure she could read street signs out to me, add one of her anecdotes and have me laughing at them also. I particularly loved how she gave us some new ways to interpret and cope with the pandemic rules. I certainly needed to see a lighter side to all the rules and their updates we were receiving on the daily. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #kittyflanagan #morerulesforlife #goodreads #tea_sipping_bookworm #netgalley #litsy #amazonaustralia #amazonkindle #bookqueen #bookstagram
Holidays... usually an chance to catch up on some spring cleaning and winter to summer wardrobe change overs. With the change of season, I thought it would be a food opportunity to also update my etiquette, Kitty's 488 Rules enmeshed in my psyche.
So as I cleaned blinds, manually vacuumed where the robot doesn't get to, sorted out earrings (where do the missing ones go), pulled my shorts, shirts, serongs, out of storage and packed away my jumpers, trackies, and jeans** I learned about eating bananas, removing lettuce before toasting sandwiches (I agree), TikToc, Zoom meetings, and Uber Eats (also agree).
See multitasking is possible, I have refreshed my wardrobe, and updated my etiquette. Thank you Kitty.
** well, most of them, I am sure Kitty has some rules about that which will appear in the next volume.
