A Witch on the Rocks #1

Tall Tales & Witchy Fails

Rate this book
Splat.
That’s the sound Hali Waverly made when she hit the pavement after a drunken billionaire ran her over with his golf cart.
Cha-ching.
That’s the sound her bank account made when his handlers got him under control and swooped in to buy Hali off. The offer? Ownership of a tiki bar on the property of a busy resort and lodging in one of the villas on St. Pete Beach.
Now Hali is officially successful. That doesn’t mean her life is a beach of roses.
When private investigator Grayson “Gray” Hunter shows up asking questions about a missing woman, Hali is evasive. It’s not because she doesn’t want to help as much as she’s already running her own investigation with the help of her best friend, another witch, and a group of sirens who control the beach.
Gray and Hali lock horns as they continuously cross paths with one another, to the point where they agree to join forces … but only temporarily.
Evil is stalking the resort. Young women are going missing at every turn. It’s going to take a mixture of magic and might to save the day … and even that might not be enough.
St. Petersburg has a new crime-fighting team. Are they strong enough to survive the rising tide and take down a monster?
You’re about to find out.

Well, this was a painful experience.

One of the least of my concerns with this book was that everyone seem to have “drawled”. Why. Why is everyone ambivalent?

But on to the main issues I had with this book.

These were some of the most emotionally immature main characters I’ve ever come across, and I read most of the twilight series. Why does Hali keep saying, “ew. Boys!” That’s the equivalent of what she actually says in the book. “Guuuuys! I’m NOT interested in my guy friend!” And don’t get me started on her stupid brother who acts like a literal 13 year old boy.

It seems that Hali doesn’t like literally anyone in her life. She constantly says Carrie, her “best friend”, is the worst and threatens to kill her. She hates her waste of space brother. She is constantly yelling and berating Gray. Literally. Everyone. She is mean to everyone. She’s not sassy. She’s mean.

And why is hali the worst witch? She has zero powers, though some random side characters say she is a powerful witch if she would bother to learn how to witch. And here she is saying her brother has no ambition. She also somehow gets run over by a super drunk rich dude at night. How is she such a powerful witch if she somehow managed to get herself run over by a golf cart that she probably saw or heard coming from a mile away? And how did she get so injured? Can’t she just witch up a healing brew? And she ends up with this successful bar that she had to put literally no effort into. Again, she is lazy and has no ambition just like her boring brother.

Okay, I just read the end wherein she has a little power and in the most anti-climactic way ever, she shows some witchery. It isn’t well done and don’t get me started on the non-ending. It was like one page/ bad guy defeated. The end.

Another thing that really ground my gears was that on nearly every page, at least by the 70% mark, someone was alluding to our main characters having sex and being into each other. I disagree. They had zero conversations that indicated any sort of compatibility AT ALL. All this stupid and unsubstantiated nonsense made me want to throw my phone right into all their faces.

This book obviously made me more than mad. I hate that I gave a portion of my life to reading it, and may god have mercy on my soul.

2⭐️

Writing: 2/5
Plot: 4/5
Ending: 2/5

I have very mixed feelings about this one. The plot honestly wasn’t bad and I liked the idea of a witchy themed cozy mystery. But the characters fell flat for me as well as the ending. The MC Hali sounded interesting from the book description- but then turned out to be a very unlikeable character. She was constantly complaining about things despite being a local business owner that actually wants to make money.

Another problem I had was the world building (in a sense) - I know this was supposed to be modern times and there’s witches. But then all of a sudden there’s sirens and shifters and these other beings that regular humans don’t know about but some do?? That aspect was just confusing to me and I’m not a new fantasy reader. Really there was just no descriptions of anything in this book. We got basic descriptions of people and places so I really couldn’t imagine anything in my head. I liked the magical system of it being modern with all these creatures but I just wished we had some more insight on how it all works - but maybe that will be defined more in the next book.

Now the plot had me intrigued about who was taking the girls and the slight romance element between Hali and Grey. That’s what kept me reading to the end and even then I was disappointed. The ending came out of nowhere - I love a twist that has context clues but still shocks you when it’s revealed. This ending felt a little hurried and I had no idea what was going on.

2-star rating from me. But other people love it so maybe you will like it better than I did. Will I continue the series? No.

Take a witch who isn’t a fan of being one or being in a coven, who has been given a familiar, a pink flamingo who spends his time getting drunk at her tiki bar and flirting with the clients. Then add in a growly guy who is a private investigator and happens to be a wolf/shark shifter … how does that even work? And then add in friends, i.e. another witch, a set of sirens, more shifters, etc. And what you end up with is probably one of the most uniquely written mysteries I’ve read in a long time. Not to mention hilarious.

It starts with Hali Waverly, who was unfortunate enough to get run over by a drunk billionaire in a golf cart at the beginning. His caretaker, who I think might be another witch, immediately catches up with them and offers Hali a deal to not talk about Franklin, who just might be the biggest jerk out there. Hali ends up with money and a tiki bar on Franklin’s resort, but she’s autonomous, and he can’t kick her out. Seems like a sweet deal.

Hali has to undergo some pretty intense surgery and recovery, including a hip replacement, which leaves her in pain, and she’s barely 30. Makes you want to kick his ass for her.

Then one day, Grayson (Gray) Hunter shows up to ask Hali about a missing girl. She remembers her being at her bar. Turns out there are five missing girls, and Hali, along with her three siren acquaintances, have a chat about it. Gray happens to listen in and realizes that Hali knows about the situation, and from there, the two team up to try and solve the case. Especially after the discovery of one of the girls who turns up dead on the beach. They realize she hasn’t been dead long, but she was the first girl missing. So they suspect the rest might still be alive.

The case is filled with the two of them constantly driving each other crazy … and fighting their attraction. They do a great job of avoiding that conversation, even if everyone else seems to think they should just get it over with. It’s probably one of the funniest parts of the book.

I like the fast pace, the fantastic characters, but what makes this book shine is the author’s ability to create witty banter without it being too over the top. She was able to give all of the characters very clear personalities, even with how short this book was. I also loved how she took your tropes of witches, shifters, sirens, and vampires, etc. and turned them into something completely unexpected. I loved it, and I am looking forward to continuing in the series.

If you’re looking for a fun read with great characters, you’ll love this. Just don’t expect any spice because Gray and Hali don’t quite get there … yet!!!!

The main character is “grouchy and surly” (as repeatedly described by herself and all other characters in the book). I wouldn’t mind a true curmudgeonly, take no bullshit, female main character. It might make a nice change of pace. However, in this novel the grouchiness is nothing but sharp sarcasm, and most of the characters she directs her ire at don’t really deserve it, (eg., her grandmother, family, best friend, etc.).

The author confuses belittling sarcasm with humor. The “banter” is also sarcasm.

This became annoying very quickly, and unfortunately, continued to the end of the book. It’s too bad, because if the main character hadn’t been so horrible to everyone around her, I might have enjoyed the mystery.

New series

Well on the one hand it's exciting to have a whole new cast to get to know and on the other it's a little bit sad because it means that someone else's series is over and done with.

Hali has a run in, well more like is run over, with Franklin who owns the resort. Net result of that is she acquires a nice nest egg, ownership of the tiki bar and one of the resort bungalows; on the downside she has a long recuperation, permanent pain and will need a hip replacement in the future. As a witch Hali can mostly look after herself; she's part of a coven but having been given an alcoholic flamingo called Wayne by the head of the coven, who also happens to be her grandmother, she's happier working alone.

Grayson, Gray, is a PI who is looking into the disappearance of a young woman who has vanished from the resort. Hali can't read him but he's a shifter himself, half wolf and half shark, although he can only shift to wolf himself it intrigues Hali who's never met a shark shifter before.

The pair agree to work together to find the girls "just this once" and although they bicker constantly and spend some time telling everyone that they are not an item it's rather obvious they will be in the future.

Lily has created a heroin a bit more mature.

Hali Waverley s life was in a rut, fired from yet another waitressing job she's out one night pondering her options, not That she has many beyond moving back in with mom and dad as she can't afford this month's rent then she gets run over by someone driving a golf cart. That event ended up being the worst thing and the best thing to happen to her. It left her with permanent damage to her hip, so she's now in constant pain but she got her own business a beachside villa on a swanky resort and a million dollars in the bank, oh and her medical bills paid. Now a year later she enjoys her life but then she meets Grey/Greyson he's a private detective and is looking for a woman who went missing on her beach a week ago. Oh and did I mention he's a wolf shifter and she's a witch. A great start to a new series Hal i is a bit older than ten authors usual heroines being in her early thirties and he humour is also a bit more mature, not too much these books are still very easy reads with some new and engaging characters i can't wait to get to know better.

A fairly lightweight, fluffy book about a witch who own a beach-side tiki bar (thanks to being run over in golf cart by the billionaire who owns the resort). There's a missing girl, who multiplies into five missing girls, a hunky PI and fairly low stakes. It does take an unexpectedly dark turn towards the end as the two protagonists discuss torturing their suspect, and a few plot threads that don't really go anywhere (like the mind block on the other brodude). The author is also way too fond of the word "drawled", which got a bit annoying. Hopefully her editor will rap her knuckles to break that habit in future volumes.

I'd wondered if this is the kind of series where the couple get together by the end of the first book and have half a dozen kids by half way through the series. For the record (and apologies if it's a spoiler for anyone), it's not, and they're still smouldering at each other by the end, and refusing to admit their mutual attraction (even though everyone around them can see it).

This is entirely the sort of series that Kindle Unlimted is designed for. I finished this one and had the second downloaded and started pretty much immediately.

Super cute and serious too...

This 1st Book of a new series is super cute with the romantic flirting going back and forth but total denial of any true feelings to all people who ask. However, it does have a very serious storyline about missing girls and them trying to find them. That's how the 2 get close, working on the mystery of the missing girls. I can't wait for the next book to come out and see where this relationship goes!! Plus it's just a terrific little story, it's got a great setting, the characters are well thought out and have good history, plus Ms. Hart is one heck of a story teller, so you know the next one will be great!! I can't wait!!! Loved this one and looking forward for more!!

entertaining new paranormal cozy mystery series

This is an entertaining new paranormal cozy mystery series. A fun cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. A young witch who lives down in the Tampa St. Petersburg area of Florida hasn’t quite figured out where her life is going yet. One day while walking along the beach she gets hit by an old man in a golf cart. At that point things are set in motion that will change your life. I’m not giving any spoilers though. So you must read on to see what happens after that point. As this author is well-established you can be guaranteed that you will enjoy the story. I look forward to many more books in this new series. Lots of entertaining characters in potential for amazing new stories. Enjoy

Great New Series!

So, I’m definitely a huge fan, and I’m thrilled to find yet another series by a favorite author. I like Hali, the main character. She’s has power, attitude, decency, and stuff she has to deal with. Like.. a close yet annoying family, a best friend with just as much irritating attitude as she has, a drunk pink flamingo familiar she can’t get rid of, and sadly, chronic pain she has to deal with because of some jerk’s mistake. However, that’s why she has ... nah, can’t tell you.
Just read this first book in what looks to be a fun new series. There are also quite a few familiar names here, and I don’t know if that’s just a coincidence, or if there will be future tie-ins with characters from some of her other series. But I can hope.

A new series from Lily Harper Hart AKA Amanda M. Lee. This book has all hallmarks of her other series. Cute, snarky woman with mystical powers meets guy who is cop\ex-military\ security expert\detective. Sometimes more than one of those words fit. Together they work to solve mystery. They fight their growing attractions for "reasons" but gradually become overwhelmed by love.

It's a solid formula that serves her well. She puts out about 20 or so a year under her pen names. So I get the need for a template.

But don't view this as a criticism. These books are enjoyable and well written. You won't confuse them with great literature, but you will have a good time.

A cute read!

I enjoy starting a new series, especially with writers I've already enjoyed. This new series, from a favorite of mine, did not disappoint! The characters are quirky and deep but not too deep, just right for exploring in what I hope will be another good long series! The side characters are just enough to keep you interested, I really hope for more with the grandmother, the coven head. I also must add that to have both main characters being paranormal is a way to make the series more interesting and I look forward to more involvement with Gray's backstory. Lily Harper Hart is very good at keeping me coming back and back!

Author is an auto buy for me. This is start to new series that takes place in beach community. Main character owns a tiki bar. Romantic interest is PI. I liked the story so far. The mystery was okay. There were consistency issues for me. In one scene hero over hears full convo between main character and the sirens. In a later scene he says he could not hear everything. There were a couple of other issues like that. I like the set up for the main character. I'm interested in what comes next.

Talk Tales & Witchy Fails is a terrific start to this series. 4.6 stars

Hali is a fresh witch with lots of snark and witchy powers. She has her own Tiki bar on the beach and her best friend works at the next bar over, so they are good friends and add lots of humor, sass and discussion about the manly population. Needless to say, Grayson sounds yummy and has lots of time to get to know Hali. Of course they all find her familiar Wayne is a major pain in the flamingo feathers. Don't miss the fun!

He's definitely handsome, but can he find the girl before she dies?

Grayson is a private detective hired to find a missing teen heiress. Hali is a bartender who cares about people. She can also read their minds if she chooses, she's a witch. Between her and her friends they are trying to find missing girls. And stop whatever is abducting them. It doesn't hurt that her friends aren't human. I enjoyed the story but none of the characters grabbed my attention. It's worth reading the next book to see if they develop and if Hali eases up on being grumpy.

This was quite a tale! I was laughing at the antics going on every few minutes between Hali and Gray. This is the fun way a really hot romance progresses and the flames are showing almost every other page. The characters are bursting with life, the plot is straight forward, the supporting characters are almost as big a hoot as the main ones, and the premise is finding five missing girls before something really bad happens. I most definitely recommend this book, the series, and anything this particular author writes, because she has never failed to deliver.

an intriguing mystery

Hali and Gray are awesome, funny and entertaining.
I seriously love the beginning of a new series, getting to know new characters and a new place. The tiki bar and resort did not disappoint.
Hali is all kinds of snarky and sassy, Gray is broody and gorgeous, Cassie is just fantastic, Hali’s family are all wonderful and Wayne is freaking hilarious.
The mystery was great.

Will They? Or Won't They?

Lily Harper Hart is one of my go to authors. She writes the best lighthearted paranormal books with lots of snark and entertaining repartee. Colorful characters everywhere. I mean, a pink flamingos familiar? Who doesn't love that idea? The mysteries are serious and baffling though. Give any of her series a try. You could start with this. Enjoy!

I loved the first book in this series!

Great start to the series! I'm just getting into a few more of Lily Harper Hart's other series. It was very enjoyable and extremely fascinating. I was really glad I decided to start reading the other series I hadn't read. The flamingo, Wayne, really had me laughing. Imagine a flamingo, a drunk one wearing a hat at that, being a familiar!!! Really crazy and cool!!!! I'm definitely going to be continuing with this series!!!

I look forward to many more books in the series.

Great series debut

In this terrific setting, which will be familiar to readers of this genre because several authors who have attended conferences there have used it, Ms. Hart gives us an intriguing protagonist as well as love/hate interest, plus a gripping mystery. I'm looking forward to Hall's continuing adventures.

Lily Harper Hart has done it again! She has created a brand new paranormal mystery series that cannot be put down. There is drama & great characters. And of course the usual snark we’ve come to love from this author. I can’t wait until book 2 comes out to see what Hali & friends get into next.

Excellent start to a new series!

Hali and Gray are going to be fun! Two people who are attracted to each other and desperately denying it. Friends and family who are having way to much fun at their expense and in a stellar supporting cast for a truly unique storyline. I can't wait for the next book!

My new fave Lily series

I love Lily’s sense of humour and the characters she writes bring that across really well.

I love anything involving cocktails an magical bar or island and I was crushed when Gina LaManna finished her Magic Island series. But now I found this new one by Lily and as a huge fan I’m so excited.

Mysterious

A proper will they won't they type of story. Even though its a written book, the pictures conjured are like watching a film, or better yet being part of it, smelling the salt air, feeling the heat and watching the two main characters with rapt attention. Hope the next book reveals more.
