St. Mary's #3

Dead Girls Never Talk

Rate this book
AMAZON Top 50 Bestselling Author, SJ Sylvis, brings an addictive interconnected standalone boarding school romance set in a deliciously dark world packed with angst and off-the-charts chemistry.

Cade

Loving her was like breathing air—it was hard to live without.

Journey Smith was quiet and guarded, and above all else…beautiful. When we were alone, I grew to know the girl behind the stormy eyes. Her hesitant touches and hidden smiles were reserved for me, but now they're gone. Stolen moments of happiness were replaced with sharp barbs and fiery glares concealing her fear.

Our past was written in the stone of St. Mary’s—a past that I was not willing to repeat. But what I assumed to be the truth was nothing more than a fabrication of such.

Journey was back, but she was no longer mine.

Journey

They say time heals all wounds—unless, of course, your heart was broken by someone like Cade.

Cade Walker was elusive, part of the Rebels who ruled the halls of St. Mary’s. However, I got his playboy smile and deep dimples. When we were alone, he said all the right things–until his betrayal.

Now that I was back, we no longer stood on even ground. With every fleeting glance he gave me, my hammering heart tried to obscure my fear. Cornered in the darkened halls of St. Mary’s Boarding School, Cade demanded to know the truth.

A truth I wasn’t willing to give.

Dead Girls Never Talk is a complete standalone in the St. Mary's Series and ends with an HEA. This book deals with subjects that some may find triggering.

“Should we make a run for it?” Everything suddenly felt exciting, and I was back to feeling like I was me. I was the Cade Walker that Journey once knew. I was the guy that put the light in her eyes, and the guy who let a girl wrap herself around his finger.  “Hop on,” I said, feeling the warmth of the fire against my back. I bent down, and there was the faintest of giggles from her that had my dimples popping out. Journey’s legs wrapped around my waist, her hot little middle pushing up against me, and then I was running through the psych hospital with my girl on my back, laughing like we didn’t have a care in the world. ”You’re loyal to those who deserve it, you are selfless beyond belief, you’re caring and sweet when you want to be, and you are determined to be righteous even when all you’ve known is evil.”

Dead Girls Never Talk is the third book in the St. Mary’s series by S.J. Sylvis, and though this can be read as a standalone, I’d HIGHLY RECOMMEND you pick up the first two instalments before diving into Cade and Journey’s story…just so you’ll have a better understanding about what all the darkness looming over St. Mary’s Boarding School. Don’t say I didn’t warn ya! *wink*

Prior to fangirling over Cade, the bad boy/morally grey hottie in Dead Girls Never Talk, I’d like to say that the author, Sammi, is a truly talented, more than prolific, Amazon Top 50 Bestselling author. Here’s the most magical thing about her books: No matter how many books you read in a row, you’ll love them all the same—if not more and MORE—as long as they’re written by Sammi. No kidding, that’s told from my personal experience.

Anyways, this book revolves around our lovely protagonists, Cade and Journey, whom we’ve previously (and rather shortly) met in the first two books. The chemistry and all-so-intense sexual tension between the two lovebirds are beyond natural; thus, their mutual understanding and unbreakable connection not only turn the steamy sex scenes into something sexier (and sometimes, more swoon-worthy), but also successfully make them the most-shipped OTP in the entire OTP stardom (at least for me but I’m sure I’m not the only them!)

Before they walked through the door, I turned around and said her name. She peered over her shoulder at me as I began walking toward her, and I grabbed onto her arm, quickly twisting her body to mine. I gave her a kiss right on her blood-stained mouth. It wasn’t a normal kiss. This was a kiss that was filled with an unyielding amount of emotion. A kiss that ripped from my soul and had silent words attached to it.

What’s more, Journey has so much sass and moxie in her despite her petite figure and that’s what makes her stand out among the heroines in the Dark Romance category. I simply have quite a great amount of ADORATION and RESPECT for Cade and Journey, especially after learning how much hardship they’ve been through and SURVIVED in the world full of suspense, deception, and abandonment. Both characters are true survivors even though they may be the ones slipping through the cracks from the very beginning of their lives.

Aside from the dark romance element, I also appreciate the tantalizing suspense dangling right in front of me throughout the whole book. I mean, romance suspense/thriller isn’t my usual cup of tea BUT I always make an exception for Sammi’s books and she never disappoints! A lot of things happen at the last 10% of the book and to my surprise, none of them feels out of place or rushed at all. The pace of the story is pretty fast and action-packed but I’ve got to say everything is really well-thought-out. Not to mention the writing style is as stellar as it can be so yeah, this book deserves more than 5/5 stars from me.

Lastly, you know what impresses me even more? The amazing Sammi leaves us with a bunch of potentials and possibilities for…guess who??? Yep, there will be one more instalment coming hopefully later this year, this FALL if lucky and things all go according to plan!!! Heartless Boys Never Kiss is going to feature one of the most broody guys I’ve ever known, Tobias (Gemma’s twin brother) and Sloane! YAAAASSSSSS!!!!! *excitement overload right now*

All in all, needless to say, I highly recommend this series and this book to everyone! Whether you’re a huge fan of dark boarding school romance, enemies-to-lovers trope, or just a book lover looking for some new authors to spare your precious reading time in general, please please PLEASE go give Sammi and her books a shot. You can thank me later!

“I thought you weren’t a killer.”
I smirked. “When it comes to you? I’ll be anything.”

so this was fun. I mean, it’s not, but I was entertained. This is the continuation of the St. Mary’s Series, it’s the third in the series, but can be read as a stand-alone. Although, I highly recommend reading this first two first.

Cade was GONE for Journey. Like we love to see it. I wish I WISH he wasn’t such a fckboy while she was gone, it went against absolutely everything he said about his feelings for her 💀 it didn’t fit him. It didn’t bother me as much, because there wasn’t really drama around it (THANK YOU) and because it was his way of coping, I kinda got it by the end, but still.

Journey was a good h, I loved that she was strong on her own, but still liked to be rescued by Cade, like yes girlie you’ve worked enough!!! Loved that for her.

Her relationship with Cade was mostly sexual, but I liked how the emotional parts were done too. Their relationship never really stopped, so there wasn’t a big build-up in getting back together, but I kinda liked that. Cade just wanted her🥺🥺 he communicated well and they worked together as a team. He was a fierce protector and a bit possessive, though. I liked it.

“She disappears into the two heavy doors of St. Mary’s, and I dropped my arm down yo my side, preparing myself for death.
Because that was what Journey was going to be for me.
A slow, dreadful calling to my death.”

Last book, there was a more urgent plot, and I thought I wasn’t liking this because the urgent feeling wasn’t there. BUT, I ended up enjoying that, Journ took her time searching for answers and once the “urgent” part came it felt very natural in the story. It was predictable though. But I still was intrigued and enjoyed it.

This book was so much better with the friends dynamics!!! I really got the vibe and I was living for it. I kinda want Bain’s book now. Oh that’s gonna be so fcking good. And next one? With Tobias and that girl?!?! UGH the tease we saw throughout this book was delicious. I need that STAT😩😩

There was a bit of an inconsistency at the very beginning when Journ was mad at Tate for not believing her, but then next time he shows, she said he was always on her side?? And that he was a great guy?? uhhhhh, did I miss something??? I love Tate, but that part was kinda confusing. ALSO, school?? nonexistent?😂😂 It would’ve been better if they were on summer break or something cause they literally never went to class. Hopefully next book, will have a better balance with them being actual realistic students.

oh, and the end wasn’t that great. I wish it didn’t end so abruptly and the epilogue didn’t left us hanging like that. It would’ve been better if they added that in the book and then we could’ve have seen more of how Journey coped after and maybe a tease of next book’s plot?? idk it felt suuuuuper abrupt, like there was a whole chapter missing :(

But all in all, I liked it. It was hot (the orphanage scene? whew🥵), emotional, romantic, intriguing and kinda fun. Although, please wear condoms???!? they were reckless af there. Y’all are 18 😅 but anyways, I really like this world, can’t wait for the next books!!!<33

3.75/5 ⭐️
3/5 🌶

Tropes:
- romantic suspense
- second chance romance
- protective + possessive hero
- boarding school setting
- mystery & secrets
- trauma (heroine)
*Check TW*

POV: first person - dual

Type: interconnected stand-alone (book three) *book one & two are a duet following a different couple*

After escaping a corrupt psych ward, Journey has to find a new way to walk the halls of St. Mary’s where everyone believes she had tried to kill herself 8 months prior. Cade has to earn her trust after a betrayal that is believed to have caused such a domino effect on her life.

It’s most definitely a me thing but long paragraphs are my enemy. This book wasn’t very long and it took me 3 days to finish it when on average I can read lengthy books in a day.

Cade and Journey were such unique characters that had great chemistry right from the start. I just feel like the book started and ended with them never really falling out of love so we never got the romantic build up to this “new” versions of themselves after the separation.

Everything was wrapped up towards the very end and the epilogue was hardly an epilogue, it was very short and dull. It all felt kinda anticlimactic with no smooth build up. I’m also not the brightest when it comes to predicting “plot twists” but I figured this one out early on so I wouldn’t consider it much of a twist since it was almost clearly hinted.

The next couple though? I’M ALL FOR IT.

Safety Warning: *Technically not a spoiler since it was mentioned in the prior duet (I didn’t remember if it was but I went back to check)

For Cade being SO obsessed and in love with Journey, the fact that he slept around to “forget about her” in the time they were apart didn’t feel true to his character.

Dead Girls Never Talk by S.J. Sylvis is a dark new adult romantic suspense with plenty of twists, emotions and chemistry. It is a different kind of second chance romance. If you love boarding schools with their complex and dramatic vibes and complicated characters, this one is for you.

Journey is back to St. Marys after she was sent by force to psychiatric hospital..wrongfully accused of attempting suicide. She is changed. Cade is one of the kings of the school and he has to know what happened with the girl he loves.

Though the blurb says it's a complete standalone, I will suggest reading the previous duet set in the same universe as a lot have happened there and I felt a tiny bit lost. It also felt like reading part two of a romance as this starts with Journey being back to school after that mishap and they already had a kind of relationship. So this is more about the healing and rise of journey and revival of their relationship. Cade is a jealous possessive alpha and you will love how dedicated he is. Journey has been through a lot but she is standing fierce and strong. The chemistry is intense. It was a bit slow and overtly descriptive and I found myself skipping some parts as I wanted to see what is happening next.

While this is an interconnected stand alone I suggest reading the other books as it gives you some back story and introduces you to the female main character in this book

Rating: 5 stars

I have been craving this book since I finished Bad Boys Never Fall and it did not disappoint! I have been a fan of S.J. Sylvis since her English Prep Series and when I say her books get better with every single release I am not exaggerating!

In Dead Girls Never Talk we get the story of Journey and Cade.
I knew from the little bits of information we got in the first 2 St. Mary's books that this one was going to break my heart and she didn't disappoint.

Journey is a girl without a past.
Yes that sounds strange but after being left on the steps of an orphanage at 1day old she had no clue about the people who helped bring her into this world. Sister Mary sends her to St Mary's in an attempt to protect her.

Cade is someone living in his father's shadow.
Forced to do things for the family business that eventually crumbled around them. Now with his father incarcerated and Cade able to do what he wants he goes in search of what happened to Journey 8 months before, when she ended up in the Covens Psychiatric Hospital.

There are a lot of twists and turns in this book that I didn't see coming and some I figured out about the same time as the characters. S.J's ability to build an immersive world will never cease to amaze me and draw me in. She creates a dark world that thrusts you into it with the characters and keeps you turning the pages.

SJ Sylvis has done it again. She is a master writer and I simply adore her books in the St Mary’s world.

Dead Girls Never Talk was pure hotness, an addictive story that I inhaled before I even knew it. This was a book I found myself fully invested in and did not want to put down.

I fell for these characters from the get go. I wanted Cade to get with Journey so bad I could taste it. These two characters have carried a love for one another for many years, it is only right that they finally get things right.

I truly recommend you to read this book but must read the St Mary’s duet before. I loved those books so much as well

ARC Review
Dead Girls Never Talk by SJ Sylvis
Releasing May 19, 2022

Sammi takes us back to the World of Saint Mary's in her new standalone, Dead Girls Never Talk. Cade & Journey's story captivated me from the start. This book is so action packed and while we got so many questions answered, of course new ones came up as well.

Journey is back at Saint Mary's after 8 months of being kept against her will in a psych ward attached to The Covens. She was brutally attacked at Saint Mary's, but everyone thinks she actually tried to kill herself. Journey has spent the last 8 months trying to survive the psych ward, oftentimes doing things she is extremely ashamed of, just to survive that experience. Journey doesn't know who attacked her, but she no longer trusts anyone at the school, including Cade.

Before she was attacked Cade and Journey spent countless hours together, but all in secret. In the shadows and behind closed doors Journey and Cade were more than just lovers, but in public they pretended nothing was going on. Cade isn't ready for things to be done, but Journey is broken from her captivity and her inability to trust anyone. But they both soon realize it's impossible to stay away from each other. However the threat to Journey's life comes back and Cade is determined to protect her, whatever the cost.

Sammi's books completely immerse you into the world she creates. You definitely will want to read the first 2 books in this series before you read this one, but I can't recommend these enough. If you love boarding school/mystery, definitely read this series. Cade & Journey's book definitely took the spice up a notch and I have a feeling book 4 will be even hotter!

Congrats on the upcoming release Sammi! <3

I don't even know where to begin...I'm still trying to grasp everything that I just read...my brain is a whirlwind right now...Sammi out did herself with this book!!! ❤️ It's AMAAAAZING!!! I spent my entire weekend reading this book and let me tell you, there is no other way I would've wanted to spend it! Cade is NOT only 🔥 but also mysterious, kind, loving, angry, protective...AAHHH!! He's everything! ❤️ And Journey...I thought Gemma was tough, but this girl has been through a lot - having no family except for 1 person - not going to name who - read the book, lol, being stuck in the Psych Hospital - the things she had to experience there...just wow...what a mess, and living in the Orphanage at a young age - eventually losing the person who tried to protect her....my heart just breaks for her. She is strong, kind, caring, loving, brave, wild, protective. I love her! I just want to hug this girl a billion times!! Cade and Journey together are like fireworks exploding on the 4th of July! There were so many HOT scenes in this book 🔥- I love the Covens scene! Cade helped her wash away all those bad memories!!! Also that ending was intense!!! My mouth was opening and closing every few seconds. I need more of these two! I also love the interaction between all of the characters. We got to see more Gemma and Isaiah - love these two! Also Tobias!! Boy this guy is mean, but I know there is a heart under that hard shell somewhere!?!? Also Brantley and Shiner - I can't wait to read there book. And Bain!!! Ugh...my heart! ARC review:
I loveeed Cade! The filthy mouth possessive hero, made me blush over and over. His inner thoughts had me cracking up. Sj is the queen of angst man! I loved this story. The tension between Cade and Journey had me gripping my chair. I just wanted them to be happy together. The longing between them both had my heart hammering. Ughhhhh! The hopeless Romantic in me had me rooting for them til the end. The standoff between Cade and a certain someone was so entertaining. Oh don’t worry Cade. I love this group of kids. I love how we still have scenes with Isiah our broody boy and his love Gemma. Some of these scenes were so comical. The commentary had me laughing out loud. SJ also knows how to write emotions/feelings in great detail. Her word play is out of this world. She doesn’t just write he’s mad or she’s scared. The fine detail to what the character is feeling is so beautiful. I can’t wait for the next book. These stories are always so well written, and I will never forget some of these characters. Sj has a way of placing you right in the pages of her book, and you feel like you are apart of that world for a time. I think Cade is my favorite Perfection! *Swoon* I love emotional men in fiction, and he just loves Journey so hard.

And one more amazing book by Sylvis… seriously, why didn't I read this series sooner?
In this book we have Journey and Cade’s story, and I need to say: I love them. Journey is a girl that always searched for a place to be comfortable and to be herself. Always searching for acceptance, she thought that she finally found a place in St.Mary with her friends and a possible lover- Cade. Until, of course, the attent against her life. In the Coven’s she fights with her own weapons to survive- even if she didn’t like to do this. 8 months in such a place transforms her, so when she goes back to St.Mary, isn’t the same girl who left. Cade, on the other hand, feels guilty for all the mistakes and secrets that he kept, so he tries to patch himself up. A girl who puts your walls up and a guy who tries to fix everything for those who love. I love the characters, even Cade- he didn’t try to push or erase Journey past, he accepted it and persuaded her to be full herself. Both of them are perfect for each other, and the story swallowed me until the end. And, of course, I can’t wait to see more about Bain.

Dead Girls Never Talk, what a story!! Where to begin!? I think I have to start by saying Sammi I'm soo glad you've found your stride because you are running up moutains with this series! I can't get enough of it!

Truly every new release seems to be S.J. Sylvis's best piece of work. She has mastered boarding school romances with darkness and mystery intertwined. It will keep you craving for more!

This is book 3 in the series but can be read as a total standalone as book 1 and 2 are on another couple. Here we focus on Cade and Journey!

Cade stole my heart from the first two books so I was thrilled to finally jump into his story, knowing he had his own one to tell with the girl he first loved, Journey.

Journey is a girl without a past, having been left at an orphanage from a young age, she doesn't know much about herself. However, when she met Cade she found a home, until being chased away.

Journey was gone and now with Cade's father out the picture of controlling his life he's free to look into what happened. As they say, all is not what it seems, especially as they uncover more and more about what happened Journey in the time she was gone.

This is a spicy book but jam packed with mystery, questions and darkness. It's a fun ride that has you enthralled right until the last page!

Be sure to grab Dead Girls Never Talk when it drops as you won't regret it! Thanks S.J. Sylvis for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

WOW are you kidding me Sammi!!!!

I have a huge place in my heart for Isaiah and Gemma and didn't think it was possible to love another couple the way I loved them but goodness Cade & Journey tore my heart right out of my chest & put it back together again in the most beautiful of ways. Dead Girls Never Talk picked up right where Bad Boys Never Fall left off, with Journey returning to St. Mary's and Cade being torn up about her being back.

The first 30% of this book was so difficult for me to read because these two clearly share the most beautiful form of love and I hated any moment they spent apart. Sammi does such an incredible job with getting her readers to connect with these characters on a personal level, so even if they're doing something you don't agree with you still can't help but root for them to end up happy because you know their backstory, you know why they are the way they are and are able to understand their point of view. Cade and Journey were no different, they tried to stay away from one another - each with their own reasons as to why, but regardless of how long they stayed apart it was so clear how strong their love still was even if they couldn't see it. My heart hurt for Journey and Cade because these two fought so many silent battles and deserved happiness more than anyone, but they were both such headstrong characters, staying true to themselves and each other.

I tried so hard to read this book slowly because I loved every minute of this story and was so enraptured with these characters and their bond, but Sammi is such an incredible writer it was also impossible to put down. Outside of the incredible sparks between Cade and Journey this story has just enough mystery to keep you at the edge of your seat the entire time. Dead Girls Never Talk was a fantastic read and I'm so sad to put these two characters away because I've grown so attached to them, but I'm so looking forward to the next book in this series and can't wait to see whats next for our favorite St. Marys kids.

I’m not really into high school but this dark boarding school series has me hooked.

Journey x Cade
I almost love them more than Gemma and Isaiah

These rebels are going to be the death of me.

I have been looking forward to reading more about them since I finished the Duet.

This book definitely did not disappoint. Cade and Journey are such an amazing couple. This book instantly sucked me in. I loved the angst and mystery behind it all. They had a hate to love relationship, that was just so perfect. Cade was amazing swoon worthy. Journey was so insanely strong yet her need for Cade in her life was obvious.

Also, getting to also see Isaiah, Gemma, and Tobias made my heart happy.

I cannot wait to see what else these rebels have in store for us!
