My review :
Will she see past his mask and let it go for him ...
Mrs Bree Wolf is an author I come to like more and more, her stories are always full of drama, angst, sadness and twists and turns. And while this one follow a fairytale pattern, it is not exempt of a that makes her success.
While I have only read the first in this series, I like how the classics of my youth are revisited. Here it was like a mix between Donkey Skin and Robin Hood tales with Caroline hiding her true appearance to avoid the marriage mart and Pierce praying on the richest with a team of misfits or outcasts recruited from the scum of the city, all turned down by those thinking they are their betters and who left them to fend for themselves because of some supposed sins or wrong behavior.
Caroline found her calling as a young miss, and because of it, she changed everything in herself, from her appearance to her attitude.
Hiding behind a fabricated likeness to not be found out for the mascarading she does, when by blending with the furniture, it gives her power to assist those who need her.
Pierce has always been quite lonely if not for the few friends he has gleaned along the years, so when he lost a friend and his wife in a terrific attack, he is left scathed and determined. From there his life purpose moved. Now he hunts down those responsible why he wears a mask to hide his nocturnal activities and lets the rumor does the rest.
As both act under a disguise, it is logical they both spot one another. Even if Pierce is the first to suspect Caroline to be more than the drab outfit and ugly glasses she wears. His perseverance to unmask her unsettle Caroline, as she stands against two supposed different men, the peer and the robber. Yet, their protectiveness is something that affects Caroline.
Mrs Wolf once more presents us with a moving and entertaining read with few idle time.

How to Steal a Thief’s Heart is the fourth book in the Happy Ever Regency series, but it was fine reading as a stand-alone. I haven’t read the other books in the series and don’t feel like I missed anything. It had charming characters and was a sweet romance. It was well written and fast-paced.
Caroline Hawkins had a life-changing experience as a child during Market days. She sees a poor, hungry orphan girl and wants to help. Over the years she hires the girl to be her personal maid and starts to disguise herself by wearing glasses and ugly dresses. If she can scare off suitors and stays in the shadows, she can continue to help orphanages.
Pierce Byrne, Baron Markham, lost all respect for Society after rescuing a girl whose family was killed by gentlemen. Now he robs Society men during the night and gives the money and goods to the poor. He notices Caroline in the shadows one night at a party and when he encounters her one night, he must uncover her secrets.
This was a sweet romance and a charming story. Even though I haven’t read any other books from the series, my interest in the series has been caught.

This was my first book by Bree Wolf and I was honestly surprised how much I liked the writing. I like the idea of a nobleman being some sort of Robin Hood for the poor. Caroline is helping too but in her own way. She decided years ago that she wants nothing to do with being married at an early age and to put her time and money to people who need her most. Since she is single and doesn’t have a lot of money she tries to befriend old matrons of the ton so they’ll donate to her orphanage.
They are both hiding behind a mask with secrets only they know of. When one night both their worlds collide, feeling starts to resurface. But what happens when Caroline likes two men – one she met in the ballroom and one she met at night as a masked stranger? And of course, there’s someone out there who might threaten their love…
4 stars. I will definitely read more from this author!

So I give this one 3.5 stars. I think my hopes were set too high! But I really did like Caroline, and there was a some interesting plot twists.

Two people with secret identities makes for a very interesting story! I must say, I really enjoyed this story and I loved how you could feel the passion between the hero and heroine right from the start.
Caroline is a beauty but she prefers to hide herself under dull clothes, glasses and unflattering hairstyles. That way, no one notices her and she can do what she wants without fear of being forced to marry and lose her independence.
Pierce dons a black mask at night to rob the undeserving rich and give to the needy. Although not legal in any way, when you read why he's doing what he is, you really can't blame him! The night he stops Caroline's carriage with the intent of robbing, he's stunned and his life will never be the same again!! He sees her, he truly SEES her, under her disguise and although she keeps fighting him, you can't help but feel the passion that zings between them.
The secondary characters are also a joy and there are many emotional scenes that saw me reaching for a tissue. Very well written and definitely worth reading.

The story is engaging and has excellent pacing. Every sentence serves its purpose. The diction is appropriate for the setting but not to the extent that the reader can’t comprehend the text. Even though the entire book is written in the third person, the reader can easily empathize with the characters. The background characters were developed well. The twist regarding the villain is unexpected. The author conveyed life morals without deviating from the plot, that life is precious, looks can be deviant, and that the most important thing in a relationship is mutual respect for one another.
The author included descriptions about the weather but there was no additional detail that suggested the story’s setting is historical. Caroline and her subplot regarding her philanthropic work dominated Pierce’s masked endeavors. There could be more depth to his character. The climax felt rushed, Daphne’s and Caroline’s relationship felt incomplete.
‘How to Steal a Thief’s Heart’ is one of the most entertaining books in the historical romance genre.

I found another author who is really good.
Pierce was a thief and at the same time a baron and attending parties even with bad reputation. Caroline was a miss who disguised herself in unattractive way to avoid marriage and keep founding her orphanage. They met at the ball, he was intrigued and he set upon her once to robbed and so start their unusual courtship.
This book is full of anticipation.. especially the start of their acquaintance. She was really aloof and he was really determined. The only thing that crushed my hope was the little intimate scenes as I preferred my romance at least with one good scene.

Pure Entertainment!
Caroline and Pierce are two people who mask their identities for very different reasons and they meet and slowly fall in love.
Gosh, how I love this series, Each of the stories I've read in it becomes my next favorite. Funny how that happens, but it just shows that each is an improvement on the previous ones.
Loved the story, loved all of its characters and I am so happy to have read this book.

An encounter in her youth sets Miss Caroline Hawkins on a path where she puts the needs of those who cannot help themselves before her own. Hiding behind a facade to avoid the notice of the ton, Caroline almost manages to stay hidden, that is until she meets a kindred spirit who is determined to discover her secrets. The Black Baron has his own agenda, but when he unexpectedly meets up with Caroline on one of his forays, he finds himself becoming even more enamoured by her and sets himself up as her guardian and protector. This is a gentle romance with some suspense as Pierce and Caroline try to discover the perpetrators of the heinous crime committed some years before. Their joint collaboration brings about surprising results, including the realisation that their feelings are reciprocated. This is a thoroughly enjoyable Regency romance, and although part of a series is nevertheless a standalone and comes to a happy conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift from NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Caroline (the female MC) ‘hides’ behind spectacles and drab dresses in order to stay free and not be pursued by men intended on marriage. Her only goal is to care for and help funding for orphans in the city.
Pierce (the male MC) is also helping the less unfortunate, but doing it in a totally opposite way: in the darkness of night, he sets upon the rich, steals from them, and gallops away in the shadows to give to the poor...
Ehm... Stealing? Really Pierce?
But I think this could have been a great storyline (that was the reason I picked this book up in the first place), but it was a great letdown instead.
The writing was not for me, which consequently put a constant damper on the entire read. Secondly, I was rather interested in Pierce’s shenanigans, but his escapades are not really shown in detail! I was so disappointed... I was expecting some dark atmosphere and foggy nights where a masked Pierce flew through the action in heart pounding moments... But the entire thing ended in barely a couple of paragraphs...
Then, he gets attracted to Caroline in 0.5 seconds for no explainable reason after seein her at a ball. Their romance was just lacklustre.
Furthermore, I will admit that Caroline was NOT likeable at all for me! I found her immature and extremely rude, and had equally immature conversations with her equally immature cousin that made me roll my eyes and wonder if I’m reading a book sporting a 5 year old as the heroine...
At first, I thought she was great at working hard to help orphans, but... I felt uncomfortable seeing as she went on to get the money. She would basically sly her way through possible donors and put them in competition of who donated the most... I don’t know, I just found it disgusting. I know that the money would go to a good cause, but the way she was getting it made me angry.
And, she was the usualbitchy sassy chit that had ‘no need of men’ and thought them useless and would get all haughty and angry on you for no reason whatsoever for trying to strike a friendly conversation.
Yet it’s worth your time influencing the wives to get their husband’s money, eh?
Blergh. I’m out.

Caroline congratulated herself. Considered one of them, she was in the perfect position to influence these women; women who possessed large fortunes and great influence among the ton. What they deemed right and honorable, others strove to emulate.

How annoying! Indeed, men were nothing but a nuisance and not worth her time.
Yet it’s worth your time influencing the wives to get their husband’s money, eh?

How to Steal a Thief's Heart by Bree Wolf is a refreshing approach to an historical romance featuring a hero and heroine who spend much of their time hiding their nefarious deeds from society. Miss Caroline Hawkins and Pierce Byrne, Lord Markham, aka the Black Baron attend many of the same social events. He notices her first, wondering why she wears those thick glasses that she appears not to need. Why does she wear such unattractive clothing and why does her hair look like ... that? She sees him looking at her and ventures to inquire why. She doesn't like it. Than one night she is stopped, about her business, by a robber. He seems familiar. She isn't sure why. He wants to know why she is abroad in the middle of the night, alone. He seems familiar.
Pierce has taken to robbing rich peers who journey through the city in the night, after being up to no good. He believes most of the peerage is corrupt and whatever he takes from them and repurposes to people in need is justified. She is supporting an orphanage by worming her way in to the affections of rich old ladies. They are both interesting characters. A woman who has done everything to be unattractive to men and vowing never to marry, She is a terrific character, one so modern in many ways that she is beyond endearing. I really enjoyed both characters, their romance, the secrets, and the conflicts and the fun confrontations. 4 ½ stars from this reader!

ONE OF THE AUTHOR'S BEST
My this had a lot going for it. We get romance that builds slowly, a murder mystery, a robber who has a good heart and very suspenseful.
Another bonus, I love when an author lists the time frame. I dislike when one chapter gives us the year and then several chapter's later we are given another year. I realize this is very small, but I always need to go back and forth to make sure I know the time span. Here the author stated 7 years in the future or prior. Loved it! Little things like this put a smile on my face - lol.
The h showed her heart on her sleeve when she is 13 and finds a neglected little girl with no-one to look out for her. What she does was so kindhearted and endeared me to her from then on. Also, the reason the H robs, motives were in the right place too. Like Robin Hood.
So many interesting and unique character's that made this a fast paced story. This is basically a clean story, with only a few passionate kisses. More than a few side stories that held my interest. The h's cousin, the h's life work helping children and both of the main character's have hearts of gold.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romance and only kisses. I recommend this story and author. (ljb)

These "Happy Ever Regency" books just keep getting better and better! I think this one was probably my favorite so far, although I really did like the first three quite a bit. I loved that Miss Caroline Hawkins was so determined to live life on her own terms during a period when women of the TON were only valued for marriage and making babies with the "heirs" and definitely not being allowed to be involved in business. I loved that she actually started trying to help others back when she was 12 and met Sarah and then eventually made Sarah her "lady's maid." And Pierce was like a "Robin Hood" in my opinion. It's kind of like each of these stories in the series is similar to a past fairy tale only these are made for adults. It has a kind of surprise ending, which I won't go any further into details about other than to say that although you know deep down that "Lord Tedious" is a bad seed, and learned about him in Book 3 when Caroline's parents were trying to force him on Caroline's cousin, Rebbeca, this time we really learn how bad he really is. We also learn a bit about Pierce's (Lord Markham) activities but this book really does give it a nicely tied up ending. I sure hope that Bree still plans on books 5 and 6. Can't wait!

My favorite book by Bree Wolf so Far!
This is a wonderful story about a young girl from a wealthy family with an excess of empathy for others. Her career in helping the less fortunate starts with “adopting” a starving girl from the streets and bringing her food, clothes, etc, and teaching her better speech, reading, manners, and convincing her parents she would be a perfect maid for her. Next thing you know, she’s opening an orphanage, raising funds from society women, all while pretending to be totally nondescript and uninteresting. A husband would never let her continue her work, although she’s been able to bamboozle her parents from the beginning. She sneaks out one night in a violent storm to go to the orphanage when she receives word that part of the roof has caved in! She follows through right then with the carpenter and pays him half on the spot to start in the morning, before heading back home. She is waylaid by a charming bandit, but there is no way she’s giving up the other half of the money. And that’s just the beginning! Read and enjoy. I could barely put it down.

Miss Caroline Hawkins hides herself from everyone with a little change to her appearance. She has things she wants to achieve, and she can only do them if she stays unmarried and unnoticed. Luckily for her, her beautiful cousin is the focus of her parent's marriage ambitions.
Pierce Byrne, Baron Markham has more than a few secrets of his own. He hates the behavior of some of society, especially the men who do despicable things just because they can get away with them. So he makes as many as possible pay for it.
This is definitely a fun read. Both our hero and heroine are determined to help those who can't help themselves and that causes them to get into difficult situations.
There are giggles, tears, danger and highly emotional moments. So much to enjoy and keep the pages flying past.
This story is set in the same timeline as the previous book in the series which is the beautiful cousin's story. It made me smile to think I knew something this heroine didn't about the other girl's secrets. But if you are going to read the series ( highly recommended) you should read them in order or this one could spoil the ending of the other.

I recieved a free copy from netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Honestly could not put this book down. Caroline has devoted her life to helping orphans and in doing so has disguised herself so she does not end up married as she believes that a husband would only prevent her from the work she does. Pierce is the one man who has been able to see the woman behind the unnecessary spectacles. Pierce also has a secret he has been robbing his fellow peers in a Robin Hood way of justice. The novel creates a fun connection between two people who truly want to make the world a better more fair and justice place. I appreciate Pierce's desire to protect Caroline especially once we find out why he has become a highwayman. At the same time, Caroline is a strong, independent woman who takes control over her own destiny. The romance is definitely a slow burn and stays clean. The hints of other characters from past and future novels was enough to make me want more without overwhelming this story. I highly recommend this book.

If she remains invisible with her dour dresses and oversized spectacles, she doesn't draw the attention of any gentleman seeking her hand in marriage. She relishes her independence until Pierce Byrne, Baron Markham, *sees* beyond her wall flower identity. Pierce has his own secrets, but Caroline intrigues him from the beginning. The more he learns about her, the more he craves her company. Can they both open up about their secrets and let their attraction to each other bloom?

Caroline Hawkins is determined to care for the children in her orphanage. If it takes hiding behind spectacles, drab dresses and powder to cover her hair colour, then Caroline will do all that and more, if she remains single and have her independence. Yet Pierce Byrne, Baron Markham, sees beyond her cover of the ‘wallflower’ and soon finds himself captivated by Caroline. However, his mission to steal from his fellow peers, to give to those less fortunate, may not make him the perfect suitor.
The premise for this story was delightful and made for an interesting read. Both Caroline and Pierce’s characters are honourable and determined to help those in need. Whilst approaching their goal in quite different ways, it is their determination, that makes them such a lovely couple. I must admit that Caroline’s parent’s oblivious response to her appearance was quite interesting, but I suppose that could have been dismissed as the way of the ton.

Great plot and clean story
Bree Wolf definitely has a flare for interesting plots along with great character development. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and the whole series.
My only annoyance was that Caroline although a very smart character couldn’t recognize the voice of Pierce and the Masked man as being the same person, I admit the first time as she only spoke with Pierce for a brief moment. But the 2nd time she would have recognized his voice. This is obvious as at the Masquerade party she immediately recognized voices.
I really prefer characters to be smart and realistic, so that one point drove me nuts.
Otherwise the book was great. I few less kisses would have been fine as well, I started skipping over those after awhile. I prefer the plot to be the focus and the romance the secondary story in a book. But that’s just me :). But it was still very clean which is a must in any story I read.
Enjoy the story, I look forward to the next in the series about Mr. Caswell.

Lovely characters! Lovely story!
How did this book come out two months ago and I’m just now reading it? I’ve been loving this series and so glad to see another book come out. Although somehow I missed the release. This is a fantastic addition to the series. I like it even more than the last one for sure. It did get kind of confusing with the overlapping of Rebecca’s story. So much was familiar and yet I had forgotten a lot of the details.
Anyway, just focusing on the Pierce and Caroline’s story, it was fantastic! Loved it! Both of them have so much to hide with their double lives, both masked crusaders in their own right. There was chemistry and so much excitement to the story! I love their dedication to making things right in the world. I loved Sarah’s background and wonder will there be a story there? I am anticipating so much for the next one, Charlaine. So many questions about that one... very eager to get to know this dark haired Jamaican born beauty’s tale.

Two people cross paths during the night, each with their own secrets. Caroline makes herself invisible, that way on one notices her and what she does with her time. Caroline was on a mission. Make herself very unappealing and obtain as many donations as possible to restore and maintain the crumbling orphanages she could find. Her disguise of frumpy unappealing clothing, large glasses and powdered hair kept the men away and the ladies of society generous in their support.
Pierce did not trust many people or feel the majority of the Ton where selfish with no regard to others. His disguise was as a masked man that rode at night and retrieved, I mean held up those selfish people and relieved them of their riches for better use.

A book truly worth devouring!
I devoured this book as soon as it appeared in my Kindle as I had preordered it. It is a tale similar to that of ‘Robin Hood’ which has always been my favorite. I couldn’t help but continuously think of ‘Robin Hood Prince of Thieves’ with Kevin Costner as my mouth kept drooling. I also remember seeing the old black and white film with the swoon worthy Errol Flynn. The romance in these pages written by Bree Wolf is to die for! Drool over! Swoon over! Have I made my point? The other side of this story could be likened to a butterfly that has just broken free of its chrysalis. A young woman hiding who she really is behind thick glasses and drab clothing. One who dared enough to break free and become her true self. I cannot recommend this book enough. I know you will truly enjoy it as I did.

Caroline has secrets and more of them! Thick glasses and high necked dresses are just a few of them! Pierce has secrets a "daughter" and dangerous occupation! Pierce a Bad Baron has a eccentric and dubious reputation among the Ton! One night he notices the most vivid blue eyes looking over the eye glasses! Caroline is confused as she has made it her life's goals to be unnoticeable! Pierce sees her the real her! These two slowly reveal their secrets and are also close to one they love! Over zealous parents see her cousin former suitor transfer fickle affections to her! But Lord Boring is dangerous! Never judge a book by its cover! But the road to HEA is never smooth and this will have you cheering as of course there is a scandal but oh what a love!!!

They fight for what they believed in.
