My name is Marbrey Small, but my vision has always been large. By hard work and study, I got myself off the street and built a business from the ground up.
Now my magic is changing and mechanical people are beginning to look like you and me. Others have claimed it is my fault, but can I be blamed for things out of my control?
My lover is trying to protect me from the fallout, but even a duke can’t fight back against the magistrate all alone. This is my story of how a street rat became a duke’s lover and the beacon of hope and hate.
Amber Kell has made a career out of daydreaming. It has been a lifelong habit she practices diligently as shown by her complete lack of focus on anything not related to her fantasy world building.
When she told her husband what she wanted to do with her life he told her to go have fun.
During those seconds she isn't writing she remembers she has children who humor her with games of 'what if' and let her drag them to foreign lands to gather inspiration. Her youngest confided in her that he wants to write because he longs for a website and an author name—two things apparently necessary to be a proper writer.
Despite her husband's insistence she doesn't drink enough to be a true literary genius she continues to spin stories of people falling happily in love and staying that way.
She is thwarted during the day by a traffic jam of cats on the stairway and a puppy who insists on walks, but she bravely perseveres..
Having read the first book more than six years earlier, I'm quite chuffed with myself in recalling so many details/characters - it didn't take me long to settle in for a decent read. Of the two realms presented - the place of magic proved more intriguing to me - although I feel more could have been elaborated on the hows/whys these two realms were kept apart.
A lot of the first third of the book is devoted to Marbrey's hissy fit at his lover's actions (done behind Marbrey's back) - and readers who might find this a little too tiresome can skip forward a third-way into the book to get to where the action starts picking up; the eventual forgiveness/reconciliation seemed just a little too 'easy'. Something also didn't ring true for me with ; just saying that's all. However, the unexpected plot-twist regarding caught me totally by surprise!
Just 3 stars - half a star was deducted for the aforementioned plot 'niggles'.
This is the second book in this series and it was wonderful! The fight scenes were amazing and the characters were very well written. Amber Kell always adds some humor in her books which relieves the seriousness of the storyline. A book well worth reading! Highly recommended
Amber Kell definitely has the key to good storytelling. The setting is different and the characters solid and quirky. I really enjoyed both of the City of Keys books. They do need to be read in order. Waiting impatiently for the third. I think Affie's story is definitely something to look forward to.
