I love my former stepfather more than a daughter should. And I’m forced to spend the Christmas with him.
Derek The only thing that threatens to ruin my peace is Paisley my former stepdaughter, all grown-up and back in town for good. For years, I’ve been content with my life of solitude, but Paisley turns everything on its head. Even before I come to her rescue, I’m finding it difficult not to admire her beauty and success. I know I’m no good for her, or for anyone, so why can’t I shake the feeling that she was meant to be mine? It doesn’t matter what I feel. Considering what happened the last time I let someone in, it’s a risk that I refuse to take again.
Paisley Moving back to my hometown was supposed to make my life simpler. But my growing feelings for Derek Cutter are anything but. After a brief stint as a successful model, small town life in the Sierras is agreeing with me. I have a booming jewelry business, celebrity clients, and more than enough money. Everything is perfect, until I find myself stranded in Derek’s cabin. He’s always been a lone wolf, a bit rough around the edges, but he’s also selfless and charming – the sort of man I’ve always dreamed of. It’s too bad that he used to be married to my mom, and thus, is completely off-limits.
Do you remember how Harlequin used to grade their romance books into categories like Sweet or Steamy or Spice? This would probably fit into the Spice category.
I needed a simple, smutty palate cleanser between some dark mafia books. I came across this and figured it would be just what I needed. This was an unexpectedly sweet and deep (for a novella) treat. There’s sex, but it’s not written explicitly so I wouldn’t qualify this as smut.
The author’s writing style was fine - not bad, not noteworthy. A few too many paragraphs without dialogue for my personal preference.
I’ll definitely put this author on the “palate cleanser” list and check out some other book books.
Note: there are a couple of places where the end of a paragraph is cute off. That type of thing is annoying to me, but it’s likely just a few words, so I don’t think we miss much of the actual story.
Didn't have a lot of depth to why they love each other they just get into it with little resistance. The step father loved the mother of the step daughter and it doesn't bother the fmc. And the mother is dead. Could've built more complex characters and give this story more umph. But alas, since this is a short novella, can't really complain. 2.5 stars for the spice and story line.
