One might well wonder why yet another Study Bible is being produced. Don't we have so many already? We are indeed blessed with an abundance of resources in this country. Yet, the Grace and Truth Study Bible sets itself apart in its the approach. It really aims to keep you in the biblical text. Though there is a helpful introduction to each book, it is not overly technical. There wasn't a formal outline. And resources like maps are kept to the back of the book along with other resources. The introduction served as an invitation to get into the actual text of Scripture and begin reading.
The actual study notes had much of the same feel. While it would be impossible to have read all of the notes at this point, I have read the notes for the book of Hebrews and part of the notes for Genesis. The notes focused on following the line of argument, rather than commenting on isolated verses. This means the notes took chunks of the biblical texts rather than verse-by-verse. This was helpful in that it kept me thinking about what Hebrews was actually saying, not just the comments offered on the text or a bunch of cross references zooming me around to other parts of the Bible. The notes themselves accomplished several things: 1) explained difficult parts of the text, 2) brought out the theology of the text, 3) showed how Jesus' work connected to the OT and helped bring the Bible together as one book, 4) moved in the direction of basic application as a response to the text. Overall, the comments were not overly technical. Instead, reading them felt like listening to a well-educated pastor guide me through the teaching of the book over coffee.
The full list of contributors and editors can be found in the sample download of Genesis from the publisher's official website for the book. It's practically a who's who of current well-known pastors and scholars. There were only a few names I didn't recognize. What does this mean? For me, it signals that the notes found in the rest of book will not just be reliable, but insight and helpful. This is not due to come celebrity status, but because of the quality of their previous output. I look forward to reading all of the notes in the course of my study in the coming months and years.
On the more visual side of things, the Grace and Truth Study Bible is easy on the eyes. The font used for the main text is Zondervan's new NIV Comfort Print. This really is a vast improvement on their previous font, which looked too round and elongated. The companion fonts for the notes and heading are san serif fonts that match well. The subtle use of color in headings and cross-references also adds to easy reading experience.
This is a Study Bible I can high recommend to people at church. If you are looking for something more technical or if the NIV is not your go-to translation, that may take off a star for you. But I found what I read to be help as part of my daily reading routine. Though I was given a digital copy of this book for review, it did effect the outcome of my comments. This is a quality work and I'm happy to see it gain a wide readership.

I received the Green Hardback edition of The NASB Grace & Truth Study Bible for free in exchange for an honest review.
I. EXAMINATION:
A. The Facts:
The Bible measures out at 9.5 x 6.75 x 2 inches or 24.1 x 17.15 x 4.9 centimeters with a rounded spine. The NASB Comfort Print font is accurately measured at 9 point for the Bible text and 8 point for the study notes.
B. The Fashion:
1. Dust Jacket: This is a typical hardcover with a dust jacket that is about as attractive as you can get.
2. Ribbon: The single copper ribbon is double-satin to match the theme of the Bible, but it is folded down the middle and tucked into the gutter of the Bible. I don’t like that. There is excess glue sticking poking out behind the ribbon and extending onto the headband.
3. Head- and Tail-bands: The copper head- and tail-bands match perfectly with the green-copper theme of this edition.
4. Print: The two-color page design is attractive and easy to read. The copper accents extend to book headers, chapter numbers, column bars, subject headings, and the decorative lattice patter that adorns the introductions to each book of the Bible. This is also a red letter edition with the words of Christ in the same dark red color that Zondervan has been using for their other NASBs for the last couple of years, which is to say that it is maybe a good Baptist grape juice (not wine!) color.
C. The Features:
1. Smyth-Sewn Lay-Flat: Confirmed. This Bible passes the Fall of Man test and lays flat whenever I open it to Genesis 3.
2. Book Introductions: These may include Author, Date, Audience, Interesting Features, and Theological Themes. It is worth noting that all of it is written in about 6-15 paragraphs (depending on the book) with no uniformity, which is my biggest gripe.
3. The Lockman NASB Concordance is the same one that can be found in other Zondervan NASBs.
4. Map Index: This is located immediately after the concordance. I am not certain why this is not located directly before the maps.
5. Notes Pages: There are three pages for writing notes in the back of the Bible, with the back of the 3rd page having the Note Regarding the Type at the bottom of what could have been the 4th notes page.
6. Maps: There are 14 glossy card stock maps. They have excellent color to them. If you buy the Logos edition of the NIV Grace and Truth Study Bible, the maps are included.
D. The Focus:
1. Target Audience: Dr. Mohler did a couple of promotional videos for Zondervan, explaining the title and the target audience of the NIV Grace and Truth Study Bible. They may be found on YouTube. He states, We have aimed this study Bible to Christians, who are committed to Christ, they love God’s Word, they just want to know how to love it more, understand it even better, and get deeper into it. They wanted it to be direct and accessible enough that the newest believer can immediately benefit from it. It’s deep enough and thoughtful enough that the believer of many decades will find ever new riches.
2. Unique: It’s exactly the study Bible that I (Dr. Mohler) and many others would have wanted to have many years ago. I thought this quote was interesting because Dr. Mohler once shared that, when he would go on family vacations as a boy, he would stick an encyclopedia beneath his car seat so he would have something to read during the drive. The GTSB is also committed to display Grace and Truth in every text of scripture, to help interpret one text from another text of scripture.
3. Unapologetic: Dr. Mohler himself was a very important part of the Conservative Resurgence in the Southern Baptist Convention, and we should expect certain correlative commitments: the inerrancy and sufficiency of Scripture, no female preachers, pro life.
4. Reformed: In order for someone to serve as a professor at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, he must affirm the Abstract of Principles, so if you want to know what these contributors believe, you can start there.
5. Southern Baptist: Though there are many Baptist denominations, Baptist heritage has traditionally included a commitment to the following five distinctives: Soul Competency, Regenerate Church Membership, Congregational Polity, Believer’s Baptism by Emersion, and Church Autonomy.
II. EVALUATION
The GTSB will probably be known for what it doesn’t have, just as much as what it does have.
A. Lack of Standardized Organization in the Book Introductions
The book introductions can range between about six to sixteen paragraphs, and there does not appear to be a standardized set of topics to cover. Though each contributor may cover most of the same customary topics, they do not appear to be given in a standardized order, and there is no method of indicating which paragraphs address which topics. This can be frustrating when the reader wants to quickly find information concerning the date or the author (paragraph 4 in Hebrews and paragraph 8 in Jeremiah).
B. Missing Features
Many of the common features of a Study Bible that customers would expect to find are either missing entirely, or they are quite frankly invisible, which, for a college kid trying to learn how to manage his time, is practically the same thing.
* No Book Outlines
* No Canonical Introductions
* No Excerpt on the Intertestamental Period
* No Timelines
* No Charts
* No Character Profiles
Many of these missing features are done very well in other study Bibles such as The Open Bible and the Life Application Study Bible. Even if there are some of these things scattered throughout the study notes, they are impossible to find.
C. Language
There might be some lofty language throughout the GTSB, which could include some technical terminology. At other times there does appear to be fluffy language, which might be described as having the intention of exalted language, though sometimes coming off as superfluous or verbose.
D. Target Customers
1. Seminarians: No doubt, there will be many SBTS students and graduates who will want to pick up this Bible, and they will probably prefer the blue seminary-themed colors of the NIV Premier Collection edition and also wish that it had been printed with the ESV instead. Those who invest in the NASB edition will be happy that it was produced as well, for the NASB probably has a more favorable reputation with SBTS students as well as with fans of John MacArthur and Steve Lawson, with whom Dr. Mohler and others in that circle are close.
2. Other Students: College students will likely want the less expensive editions of the GTSB. Parents of high schoolers will probably opt for the leathersoft or bonded editions. I think the blue is my favorite among those. It has an additional but modest flare to it.
3. Sunday School Teachers: One of the best marketing decisions made by Zondervan is to produce Large Print editions. Who else does this? How many times have we heard the complaint that the fonts in all these study Bibles is just too small? Zondervan has offered a gift here to those who no longer have the visual acuity that they once had.
III. THE LAST WORD
A. Theology: The Grace & Truth Study Bible will be a treasure for young Christians who want blossom in their study of theology. This Study Bible is not like other Study Bibles. It has a wider focus on how the entirety of Scripture testifies to the glory of God in Christ, and for this addition to the Study Bible milieu we should be thankful.
B. Options: The array of options that Zondervan has produced in the Grace & Truth series is not merely appealing. It is also considerate.

The NIV Grace & Truth Study Bible opens with a presentation page (which is always a huge plus for me) and a special introduction pages that explain (among other things) the reason this study Bible is titled Grace & Truth.
One of the reasons I love Study Bibles is the study notes help me understand the background information, context, etc. that ultimately helps me understand the passages better. It helps me not only read God's Word, but also to gain a deeper understanding of what I'm reading.
For example, in Acts 18:1 Paul went to Corinth and met a man named Aquila. Concerning this passage, the study notes state:
I find facts like this fascinating. I love learning about historical facts, cultures, and customs, especially when they pertain to the Holy Bible. Having these study notes on the same page while reading Scripture is much more practical and convenient than searching for the information through other resources.
This is a very sturdy, attractive, and uncomplicated Study Bible, with easy-to-navigate study notes, detailed maps, pretty page designs on the first page of each book of the Bible, and an ample concordance (over 300 pages) that aid in searching for particular words throughout the Scriptures. Highly recommended.

"Grace and Truth are two of the most wonderful words found in the Bible. Grace is the love God shows us despite our sin, and truth is the very foundation of our faith."
One of the reasons I love Study Bibles is the study notes help me understand the background information, context, etc. that ultimately helps me understand the passages better. It helps me not only read God's Word, but also to gain a deeper understanding of what I'm reading.

A Study Bible with an Emphasis on Grace and Truth
Dr. R. Albert Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, presents the "NIV Grace & Truth Bible" as general editor, together with a group of fifty mainly (but not exclusively) Baptist theologians and scholars, which was published by Zondervan. The Bible comes in an attractive design, with an eight-point print (7-point for the study notes) and uses a dark teal for the text (except for the Words of Jesus which are in red) and has an attractive design. The two-column version lists the cross-references between the two columns and the study note underneath the text.
The comments are good, insightful, easy to be understood, and to the point. Sometimes they have devotional character or are challenging for the readers, e.g., the comment to Hebrews 11:32-40: "The author highlights the reality of suffering and the need to press on amid trials. Enduring suffering proves genuine faith. The Old Testament has many heroes, some of them martyrs. Though suffering and death struck God’s people, they pressed on toward the prize of his promises and believed in God’s faithfulness. Moreover, verses 39–40 make clear that these Old Testament believers never received in this life what they hoped for—the revealing of the Messiah. Even so, they believed in God and trusted in his ways until death. Today, however, the Messiah has come. Jesus has set up his rule and kingdom. Jesus has secured atonement and the forgiveness of sins. Apart from the New Covenant, there is no hope for the fellowship with God for which Old Testament believers hoped. God calls the world to receive salvation and fellowship with him through the blood of Jesus Christ."
I highly appreciated that the Table of Content comes before Abbreviations, Introduction, Acknowledgments, ... which helps for an easy orientation in the Bible for those readers who don't have the extensive knowledge to know where to find various books or items. I further appreciate the Concordance and Index to Maps as well as the 16 pages of Maps at the end of the Bible.

I highly appreciated that the Table of Content comes before Abbreviations, Introduction, Acknowledgments, ... which helps for an easy orientation in the Bible for those readers who don't have the extensive knowledge to know where to find various books or items. I further appreciate the Concordance and Index to Maps as well as the 16 pages of Maps at the end of the Bible.

This book first appealed to me because it is a fresh new commentary, and I like to have resources on hand to aid my personal Bible Study. I am always on the look for quality Christian publications. I have never participated in a book launch for a Commentary before so that intrigued me also. I was not disappointed as I read the commentary word for word for the book of Hebrews. Now, please understand, I use commentaries often in my Bible studies, but I have never read one start to finish for a book of the Bible. I was blown away with it! The commentary made the book come alive as I traced the development of the book through the fresh lens of this work.
The most rewarding experience for me was watching, through these new eyes, the development of the subject material aimed at the Hebrews who either had not accepted Jesus as the Messiah yet or had and were back sliding a bit. I saw as I traversed through the book the masterful way the author developed his argument and the how AND why he used so many Old Testament verses to back up his points. His audience were those who were totally familiar with the Old Testament prophesies and so he used these very words to back up his words.
The commentary gave interesting insights into the traditions of the Jews of the 2nd temple. For instance, they had a tradition that angels were assigned to individuals and so Jesus could be considered no more than an Angel – on a mission, he could be considered less than divine this way. The author of Hebrews uses a string of Old Testament verses to masterfully show he is the Son of God who angels themselves worship.
I loved the points that the commentary used to describe the use of “Therefore” in scripture since we all know to look to figure out why the Therefore is there for… The commentary explained a) it’s a shift in the argument 2) it gives the correct application of the truth preceding it and 3) it’s used to see the readers lives changed.
In the Hebrews 11 – the Faith Chapter the commentary makes a couple of noteworthy quotes. First, “Saving Faith is not blind Faith” and goes on to explain the assurance, conviction and knowledge of God that is all built into it. It also goes on to state that none of the people named received in their lifetime what they “hoped” for – the revealing of the Messiah.
I feel this excellent new NIV Study Bible will appeal to those students of the Bible that want to add a quality resource to their bookshelf and for the Christian that might be looking for a Bible with a quality commentary and Bible helps that is easy to read, follow and understand.
I was provided with a pdf copy of the book of Hebrews from the Study Bible for the Launch group to review but I have not been paid for my review – these are my personal thoughts and my personal recommendation based on my own evaluation.

I bought this after purchasing the NLT Filament student life application Bible, because I wanted a more literal (word-for-word) translation for Bible study purposes. I was not disappointed in this regard. The introduction notes to each book and the passage notes are thorough and nicely laid out. I quite like that the notes do not leave any verse out and instead include them in groups such as "v.15-20, 25-30".
The editors and personnel involved with making the Bible as well as a section on how to use the Bible is included in the preface. The concordance at the end of the Bible is detailed and sorted alphabetically. It does take some effort to get used to the literal phrasing of the verses. I would recommend you use other translations for reference while reading or studying the Bible.
I would recommend the book for anyone seeking a literal translation of the Bible without the archaic (yet poetic and literary excellent) language of the King James Version.

I loved the way this Bible is formatted with the note easily found on each page. The notes are insightful, Spirit led clarification of the scriptures written in a way that is clearly understood. They give depth and richness to the scripture for mature Christians, and for new Christians they are easy to read and connect.

Due to vision issues, I've had to rely on an online Bible reading and leave my beloved, much marked Bible on the shelf. This was my first time to read any other than the KJV. The Grace and Truth NIV online study Bible was amazingly well arranged and consistently accurate in moving from text to footnotes to study notes and always returning to the correct location. Excellent edition.

I love this Study Bible! I found the notes to be thoughtful, consistent with the whole of Scripture and enlightening. It's a great tool to help you read through, study, and meditate on the Word. I have a passion for Study Bibles, own quite a few of them and utilize them all. There are certainly a number of Study Bibles I think highly of, but the Grace and Truth Study Bible is one of the best!

My Thoughts:
I have to be honest. I like the NIV translation but it is not my favorite. Nevertheless, I own several NIV Bibles.
The first NIV Bible I owned was in 1990.
BSF or Bible Study Fellowship International uses the NIV translation. As a member, I can use any translation but all the Bible texts in the notes and questions are in the NIV Translation.
What I love about the NIV Grace and Truth Study Bible:
1. The Bible text print is easy to read. It is nine point. It is bold print. The type font is an easy format.
2. I love the explanation and placement of Bible passages that are not in the earliest of manuscripts. I am referring to John 7:53-John 8: 1-11. I have looked in several of my Bibles to see how they handled the placement of this section. In the ESV Gospel Transformation Bible it is located in the Scripture passages portion and not set apart in anyway except to include double brackets. There is nothing written in the commentary notes. Right before chapter eight begins there is in brackets the following: “[The earliest manuscripts do not include 7:53-8:11].” In the NIV Faithlife Illustrated Study Bible, the portion of Scripture is in italics. There is a brief explanation in the commentary notes. The NIV Study Bible Fully Revised is the same. The NIV Grace and Truth Study Bible is the same except there is a longer write-up in the explanatory notes. It is stated: “The comments below treat the verses as if they accurately describe an actual event.” Page 1458.
3. The NIV translation is a readable translation. It is easy to read. It flows easily for reading silently or out loud. It is an easy translation to memorize.
4. I love the commentary notes.
5. I love it R. Albert Mohler, Jr. is the General Editor.
6. I love the maps. They are aesthetically pleasing and on thick paper. Out of all the Bibles I mentioned in #2, NIV Grace and Truth Study Bible is the best for maps.
7. The ESV Gospel Transformation Bible has an 81 page concordance. The NIV Study Bible Fully Revised Edition has a 147 page concordance. The NIV Faithlife Illustrated Study Bible has a 100 page concordance. The NIV Grace and Truth Study Bible’s concordance is 310 pages. It is extensive and impressive. I love it!
8. The features most important to me is the translation followed by readability. Even though the NIV is not my number one favorite I still like the translation. I love the bold print text that is easy to read. I love the layout and form of the Bible. I love love the concordance. I love the maps. I love the commentary notes.

I enjoy using study Bibles, including the Reformation Study Bible, MacArthur Study Bible, ESV Study Bible and the Spurgeon Study Bible. The new Grace & Truth Study Bible, which uses the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible, with Albert Mohler serving as General Editor, is intended to help Christians read God’s Word, understand it, and develop a constant hunger to know more and more biblical truth. Mohler tells us that every note, every explanation, is intended to help the reader understand the Word of God. The study Bible will benefit new believers who are looking to understand the Christian faith for the first time, and it will help maturing Christians who are eager to dig deeper into biblical truth. Mohler writes that the entire project, and each of the writers and editors involved, is committed to the complete truthfulness and trustworthiness of the Bible. This project is graciously evangelical, Reformed, and complementarian.

In my opinion, a good Study Bible includes plenty of cross-references, notes, pictures, maps and a concordance. This one has all of those. If you are looking to purchase a new Study Bible, put this one on the top of your list.
