Le Chancellor
Faisant voile de Charleston en Caroline du Sud à Liverpool avec vingt-huit personnes à bord et une cargaison de coton americain, le Chancellor suit une direction qui inquiète ses passagers et suscite des doutes sur la santé mentale du capitaine. Un incendie se déclare dans la cargaison et fait rage pendant plusieurs jours avant de s'éteindre à la faveur d'une tempête. Mais le navire s'échoue sur un îlot basaltique et le second, Robert Kurtis, qui a pris le commandement, procède à des réparations en espérant remettre le navire à flot et atteindre la Guyane. Malheureusement, le Chancellor fait eau de toutes parts et la chaloupe a été détruite lors d'une tempête précédente.

A highly satisfying nautical adventure from Jules Verne. The novel is written from a first person perspective and narrates a great tale of tragedy, mystery, and suffering through journal entries made by J R Kazallon, a passenger on the ship 'Chancellor'.
The book starts of at a slow pace and builds up suspense and drama once the reader is through the first quarter of the narrative. A fire that happens on the 'Chancellor' forces the unfortunate passengers to abandon their ship for a raft and make them go through a dire journey which is filled with every form of disaster, horror, agony and moral dilemmas as they struggle for survival. One disaster after another follows them and they are blasted by fate with every type of horrors in the form of extreme climates, acute thirst and hunger, tensions of mutiny and death.
This epic shipwreck tale is emotionally unforgettable as it tells a story of absolutely normal people becoming mad and doing things for their own survival which they wont even dare to imagine in their civilized life's.
There are other tales about Shipwrecks from Jules Verne, but this one is brutishly realistic and takes place entirely at sea.

Verne's love for the sea led him to write several novels about ships, shipwrecks, castaways, etc. This 140 year old novel (1875) is the story of the commercial sailing ship, the Chancellor, and it's ultimate demise in the Atlantic Ocean, leaving it's crew and passengers adrift on a raft for 51 days. While it's a good adventure/disaster story, it's also the story of the human experience; how people react to water and food deprivation, the continuous fear of storms and sharks, and the ultimate fear of knowing this is how their life will end. Jules Verne's inimitable style always delivers.

I finished Le Chancellor on friday but forgot to update goodreads.
I liked it. And the illustrated version was on point.
It's been a long time since I had picked up an 'adventure' book. It felt nice. 3/5 stars for this one.

La storia principale di questo libro, I naufraghi del Chancellor, è anche quella più debole delle due che lo compongono, principalmente per via di un inizio estremamente lento.
Solo più avanti la narrazione acquista sostanza, prima con l'incendio e poi con la terrificante descrizione del lungo tempo passato dai superstiti sulla zattera, con pochissimi viveri a disposizione, senza strumenti, senza sapere dove fossero e con solo la remota speranza di poter in qualche modo veniri sospinti verso della terraferma o di essere visti da un'imbarcazione di passaggio.
Una storia che sicuramente riecheggia quella che doveva essere una delle più grandi paure per i viaggiatori di quell'epoca, e che aveva nel naufragio della fregata Meduse a inizio secolo uno degli esempi più lampanti e spaventosi.
Le sofferenze e i pericoli fisici e morali sono stati ottimamente rappresentanti, ma alcune ingenuità come il comportamento privo di senso del comandante fin dall'inizio risultano pesanti da digerire, specialmente essendo fondamentali per gli eventi.
E' invece una piacevole sorpresa il breve racconto fantascientifico Una scoperta prodigiosa, che mostra la misteriosa e fragorosa comparsa a Parigi di un inventore sconosciuto e mascherato, che ha scoperto il modo di padroneggiare gli spostamenti aerei. Una fonte di movimento tutto sommato economica, di durata immensa, in grado di sconvolgere il mondo intero a ogni livello.
In questo racconto abbiamo sia la narrazione del fatto, con gli esperimenti pubblici offerti dall'inventore, sia l'analisi delle reazioni popolari, tramite anche i collegamenti con il giornale.
E soprattutto offre parecchi spunti di pensiero sui reali effetti di una tale rivoluzione, non solo gli utopici miglioramenti: i posti di lavoro persi in settori che diventano ormai obsoleti, società in fallimento, dogane che spariscono, rivoluzione di gendarmerie ed eserciti, impossibilità di difendere realmente una città da attacchi portati dal cielo, fino alle visioni più pessimistiche dell'umanità che supera i limiti posti dalla Provvidenza e che recede a uno stato di barbarie e caos.
Interessantissimo vedere come in effetti avesse bene interpretato certe cose, pur con le dovute distinzioni: non abbiamo infatti un motore pulito, economico e longevo che senza bisogno di manutenzioni o rifornimenti può andare avanti all'infinito, ma abbiamo aerei di ogni tipo. E neanche mezzo secolo dopo la pubblicazione di questo libro si sarebbero visti i primi effetti bellici della locomozione aerea, fino ad arrivare alla seconda guerra mondiale e alle città bombardate dal cielo, prive di reali difese da tali attacchi.
E poi il finale a sorpresa... davvero un bel racconto!

I can't say I enjoyed this book because it reminded me too vividly of the true story of THE WRECK OF THE WHALESHIP ESSEX.
A crazed ship captain, a storm, a shipwreck, a raft, 12 survivors, 51 days adrift, the end of provisions, the end of fresh water, too much salt water "imagine the globe one vast sea", a lottery, a father's sacrificial love for his son, one day of reprieve, and then the end.
One more day in 2021. Time to finish Verne's MICHAEL STROGOFF.

I tornar després de tants anys a Verne, a un Verne menys optimista i més fosc, però que igualment no et deixa marxar. M'ha commogut aquest relat-viatge que ens porta fins als límits de la resistència humana, tot explorant en què ens podem convertir quan l'única aspiració possible és salvar la vida d'un mateix i res més.

Jules Verne kitaplarından aşina olduğumuz yeni bir coğrafya keşfetme, balonla seyahat etme, denizaltıyla fersah fersah gezme yok. Oldukça gerçekçi olacak şekilde birinci ağızdan anlatılan bir gemi kazası ve kurtulanların yaşam savaşı var. Tempo oldukça düşük ve günlük tadında.
Tam Jules Verne ilk kez ırkçılığını konuşturmamış dedim sayfa 103'te karşıma şu çıktı: "Aşçı kötü suratlı, kaba ve küstah bir zenci. Hiç gerekmediği halde öteki tayfaların işine burnunu sokuyor".
Bu bilginin de hikayenin gidişatına hiçbir etkisi yok. Açıktan sallamış ırkçı dedem.
İthaki Jules Verne serisinin elimdeki son kitabını da okudum. İthaki basımı olmayanları yeniden basmadığı için, çakal sahaflar da piyasada kitap olmaması nedeniyle 5 liralık kitabı 100 liraya sattıklarından yıllardır okuduğum bu seriye burada nokta koyuyorum. Halbuki sevmiştim. Keşke İthaki aynı boyut ve formatta yeniden bassa.

Поредното чудесно морско приключение от Жул Верн, подплатено стабилно с илюстрациите на легендата Едуард Риу.
Фрегатата Чнслър се отправя на плаване между Америка и Британия, но товарът ѝ от памук се самозапалва. В продължение на седмици екипажът и пътниците се борят да я запазят над водата, докато капитанът бавно откача и променя курса. Накрая се налага да я изоставят и да се прехвърлят на набързо скован сал, където седмиците премеждия ще извадят най-животинското от постоянно намаляващата бройка на оцелелите.
Жул Верн е верен на стила си, дори в мореплаването се движи на вълната на географските и геодезични открития на своето време, като успява да направи няколко гениални допуска, доказани години по-късно. Същевремено рисува една картина на завръщане към примитивното, която без да е преекспонирана (както в "Повелителя на мухите" примерно) успява дълбоко да потресе читателя.
Не знам защо е модерно г-н Верн да бъде причисляван към детската литература. Дълбочината на писането му, ярките образи, които рисува и напредничавото мислене за епохата в която е живял не бива да се подценяват.
P.S. Преводачът е орязал цялата морска терминология с цел да е по-четивно за подрастващите, според мен по този начин им е навредил, както и на книгата.

Esta novela de Julio Verne, pertenece a su serie "Viajes extraordinarios" y cuenta las peripecias de un grupo de supervivientes del naufragio del "Chancellor". Esta embarcación realizaba su tercer viaje de Charleston a Liverpool por el mar atlántico con 18 hombres en la tripulación y 8 pasajeros. La novela esta narrada en forma de diario, por uno de los personajes protagónicos: J.R. Kazallon.
La odisea comienza con un incendio en las bodegas del barco. El viaje continúa durante varios días con "fuego a bordo", mientras los marineros intentan controlar la situación con varias medidas infructuosas. Poco tiempo después nos enteramos que uno de los pasajeros, lleva entre su equipaje en las bodegas un contenedor con picrato de potasio, un explosivo muy potente que no fue declarado al capitán del barco al abordarlo. La amenaza es inminente pues el fuego se extiende por la misma zona en donde se encuentra el material inflamable. El capitán abdica y el "segundo" Robert kurtis, se hace cargo de la situación demostrando entereza y humanidad, este es uno de los personajes mejor logrados del relato.
Las vicisitudes se precipitan, el barco encalla en un banco de arena mientras el fuego lo consume todo, por fortuna para la tripulación logra apartar el explosivo. Cuando se controla la situación, una fuerte tempestad sacude los restos del barco dejados por las llamas; la chalupa, la canoa y la ballenera se pierden en diferentes circunstancias. Finalmente se produce el hundimiento; con los restos de madera, los marineros construyen una balsa para naufragar y buscar tierra, apenas unos pocos víveres se pueden salvar.
Los marineros y la tripulación van cayendo poco a poco a las inclemencias de la naturaleza, el hambre, la sed y la enfermedad. Descubrimos lo mejor y peor del género humano cuando es llevado al límite en situaciones extremas. Traiciones, egoísmos, desesperanza, canibalismo.... el clásico de aventuras y desventuras marítimas, en donde solo los más fuertes quedarán hasta el final...

La prova che Verne non era uno scrittore “per ragazzi”. Storia cruda, senza filtri. Forse non la migliore lettura per la quarantena, ma quasi ti va rivalutare la reclusione in casa, rispetto quella su una zattera nell’Oceano.

Gave me what I wanted from Moby Dick!
The Survivors of the Chancellor is a book which for the first 40 - 50 pages felt dull and uneventful. Characters were established and the writing style was very fluid and immersive but it hadn't hooked me and I feared that i'd just plod through the book and conclude by giving it a lacklustre 3 stars, feeling that - though well written - it just didn't hook me. It was about this point though in these later pages where I started to realise how necessary this part of the narrative was. As the situation becomes worst and worst and the characters deteriorate, you just 'feel' it in the writing. These once lively, persevering and optimistic characters slowly become these broken down, warn out characters who just welcome death.
This book is a difficult one to get into but once you're there, it never lets up. The desperation and horror of these character's situation (madness, disease and even cannibalism) paints such a vivid image and feeling of hopelessness, it's almost criminal how relatively unknown this book seems to be. It takes it's time but give it at least 80 pages before giving up. It's definitely worth it!
I might also add, it describes one of the greatest Father/Son relationships i've ever read. They're honestly some of the most touching scenes.

Jules Verne, of course, wrote in the mid 19th century, and his style of writing reflects this. Why say in short phrases what can be said in longer flowery phrases.
Once the reader gets beyond the style of writing shock, the story is really a good one. Verne develops the characters very well, builds the story with skill, and narrates in the first person the struggle of being shipwrecked. I have read a great many shipwreck narratives over the years, and find that this fictional work is very much like the real stories of shipwreck survivors.
It is a good read. While it's not on the New York Times Top 100, it is very readable, engrossing, and entertaining.
I highly recommend it to everyone!

Pretty standard Jules Verne adventure. More cannibalism than usual.

El Chancellor es una especie de Sociedad de la Nieve, pero en alta mar. ¿Sociedad del Agua Salada, sería? También me recordó un poco al Relato de un náufrago, de García Márquez, por la crudeza de las escenas que describe.
La novela narra el derrotero y naufragio de un barco, cuyo nombre da título a la misma, desde su partida del puerto en Carolina del Sur hasta el rescate de los escasos sobrevivientes, en Sudamérica.
Desde el comienzo nos enteramos de que el barco, cuyo destino original era Reino Unido, ha tomado un rumbo diferente, aparentemente porque el capitán ha enloquecido. La situación se complica cuando se desata un incendio en la bodega, que lleva una carga de algodón. El primer oficial se ve obligado a asumir el control de la nave y llevarla a un puerto seguro, pero no llega a tiempo, y todos deben trasladarse a una balsa improvisada, con la que intentarán completar la travesía.
La historia es matizada por las distintas aventuras y desventuras que sufren los personajes: tormentas repentinas, intentos de motín, hambre y sed desesperantes, hasta el ataque de enormes tiburones.
Es una de las novelas más oscuras de Verne. Nuevamente vemos un tema recurrente en sus obras: la lucha entre el hombre (como representante de la razón ilustrada) y la naturaleza. Pero a diferencia de otras novelas suyas, en la que la razón logra imponerse, en esta parece en todo momento que los personajes terminarán por sucumbir ante la barbarie y hacer cualquier cosa con tal de sobrevivir.
No creo que sea de las obras más logradas de Verne: la técnica narrativa utilizada, el diario personal, no me parece la más apropiada, porque resulta inverosímil que en el contexto desesperante y al borde de la muerte en que se encuentra, el narrador continúe consignando prolijamente todo lo que sucede (sin contar con que el propio material de escritura debería quedar completamente inutilizable tras las tormentas que se ciernen sobre la balsa, empapándolo todo). Además, el libro carece de ese enfoque cientificista que vemos en otras de sus novelas, y el desenlace es muy previsible. Aunque hay que reconocer que logra transmitir la angustia y desesperación extremas que invaden a los personajes. Como lectores, en muchos pasajes nos volvemos partícipes de esa desesperación.

Aún así, me pareció lo bastante interesante como para recomendarla, al menos si te gusta la obra de Verne, o las novelas de aventuras del siglo XIX.
La novela narra el derrotero y naufragio de un barco, cuyo nombre da título a la misma, desde su partida del puerto en Carolina del Sur hasta el rescate de los escasos sobrevivientes, en Sudamérica.
Desde el comienzo nos enteramos de que el barco, cuyo destino original era Reino Unido, ha tomado un rumbo diferente, aparentemente porque el capitán ha enloquecido. La situación se complica cuando se desata un incendio en la bodega, que lleva una carga de algodón. El primer oficial se ve obligado a asumir el control de la nave y llevarla a un puerto seguro, pero no llega a tiempo, y todos deben trasladarse a una balsa improvisada, con la que intentarán completar la travesía.
La historia es matizada por las distintas aventuras y desventuras que sufren los personajes: tormentas repentinas, intentos de motín, hambre y sed desesperantes, hasta el ataque de enormes tiburones.
Es una de las novelas más oscuras de Verne. Nuevamente vemos un tema recurrente en sus obras: la lucha entre el hombre (como representante de la razón ilustrada) y la naturaleza. Pero a diferencia de otras novelas suyas, en la que la razón logra imponerse, en esta parece en todo momento que los personajes terminarán por sucumbir ante la barbarie y hacer cualquier cosa con tal de sobrevivir.

A nautical adventure inspired by the tragic story of the Medusa frigate. As expected, the author gives a complete and detailed description of the journey, with scientific details combined with the psychology of the characters as their world collapses and they are faced with moral dilemmas in their quest to survive. All this is given in the form of entries in a diary, which gives us the opportunity to follow step by step the whole process of shipwreck and the great difficulties that make passengers find the strength they need to get out of this adventure alive. Of course, this power is not necessarily good, in some, it is expressed through moral uplift but in others it is expressed through the worst animal instincts. So we have an interesting presentation of the different reactions of people in critical situations. So maybe this is a book that deserves more attention than the one it has.

Όλα αυτά δίνονται με τη μορφή καταχωρήσεων σε ένα ημερολόγιο, κάτι που μας δίνει την ευκαιρία ακολουθήσουμε βήμα προς βήμα όλη τη διαδικασία της καταστροφής του πλοίου και των μεγάλων δυσκολιών που κάνουν τους επιβάτες να βρουν τη δύναμή που χρειάζονται για να βγουν ζωντανοί από αυτή την περιπέτεια. Φυσικά αυτή η δύναμη δεν είναι απαραίτητα καλή, σε κάποιους εκφράζεται μέσα από την ηθική εξύψωση αλλά σε άλλους γίνεται έκφραση των χειρότερων ζωώδων ενστίκτων. Έτσι έχουμε μία ενδιαφέρουσα παρουσίαση των διαφορετικών αντιδράσεων των ανθρώπων σε κρίσιμες καταστάσεις. Οπότε ίσως πρόκειται για ένα βιβλίο που αξίζει περισσότερη προσοχή από αυτή που έχει.

La lectura de este libro ha sido interesante, primero porque desconocía el título, pues desde la infancia hasta ahora, sólo había oído hablar de sus novelas más significativas, como la vuelta al mundo en 80 días, veinte mil leguas de viaje submarino, viaje al centro de la Tierra, la isla misteriosa, de la Tierra a la Luna, entre otros.
Al principio del libro se me hace pesado, aunque debo admitir, que sobre la mitad del libro, se vuelve bastante atractivo, y aproximadamente, cerca del último tercio, comienza la angustia, pero una angustia y desesperación por la situación que rodea a los protagonistas, eso sí, con descripciones bastante "leves". Esta novela comienza en septiembre de 1869, es narrado en forma de diario personal por J. R. Kazallon, y debo decir, que me sorprendió gratamente este formato, además de sorprenderme en ciertos pasajes de la novela, pues parecen inesperados, no por su originalidad, si no por la fecha en la cual, se publico el libro, allá por el año 1874, que intuyo, empatizando con la fecha, que resultaría asombroso e insólito.
Como imaginarán, el relato nos sitúa en la "aventura" de un naufragio, concretamente un barco velero de nombre Chancellor y de como discurren las situaciones que envuelven esta trágica realidad. Encontraremos diversas situaciones problemáticas, desde rebeliones, huidas, agua, fuego, y como se alcanza, como último recurso, al canibalismo.

August 9, 2022Una buena historia de Verne; aventuras en una balsa. Ha sido comparada con la pintura "La balsa de la Medusa" de Gericault, aunque a mí eso me parece un poco exagerado. El final tiene un giro muy bueno al estilo de Verne aunque la espiritualidad y el ánimo positivo del narrador que escribe el diario me resulta empalagoso. Es un libro que podría ser catalogado de romántico porque ahonda mucho en los sentimientos que al protagonista le provoca cada una de las calamidades que sufre tanto él como sus compañeros.

Well this is Jules Verne so of course it's a great tale. The excitement is there but the reader must endure every trial with the narrator though. This was my second reading...

Following a disaster at sea, the crew and passengers of the Chancellor are left stranded at sea and have to struggle through dealing with hardship, starvation, mutiny, the elements and creeping despair.
Verne treats this situation so matter of factly that it can get a bit dry, and most of the cast never gets to be more than a type, but it also emphasizes that there are no heroes here and the calvary isn't coming. These people are on their own and are for the most part ill equipped to deal with this harsh situation, so it feels very real.
There is no romantic adventure at sea element to this, it is harsh and straightforward.

Primera incursión, no evitando mi vergüenza de decirlo, leyendo una novela completa de Julio Verne. Este libro, habiendo sido publicado hace un siglo y medio, cuantas veces lo habremos visto replicado en peliculas y libros de historias de superación y supervivencia. Julio Verne es un escritor directo, buen narrador, con una excelente puesta en escena, sin alardes, no confunde al lector con un complicado lenguaje y eso es de valorar dada la época en la que lo escribe.
Una gran historia, que si se lee, se haga con las consciencia de cuando ha sido escrita. Ahora que me he desvirgado literariamente con él, continuaré haciéndolo sin lugar a dudas.

Éste es, definitivamente, el libro más oscuro que he leído de Verne hasta el momento. En él no existen grandes descubrimientos científicos ni pormenorizadas descripciones geográficas. "El Chancellor" es la historia de un grupo de personas y sus diferentes maneras de hacer frente a un desastre inevitable, que pone a prueba su integridad física y moral. No es de los mejores libros del novelista francés, pero mantiene la tensión, el ritmo y la fluidez en casi toda su extensión.

I think I can say it's one the books that got me hooked on reading.

A surprisingly dark story. Normally Verne is much more upbeat, but this story practically could be an existentialist novel. Still it kept me engaged.

¡Tremenda aventura la que ofrece Julio Verne en esta novela! La segunda mitad de la novela tiene verdaderamente un ritmo frenético, los eventos se suceden uno a otro y a otro, sin descanso. Y esos sucesos son lógicos, naturales, congruentes con toda la historia.
Por primera ocasión, a diferencia de otras obras del autor, veo que la esencia de la novela es el drama humano, la psicología de los personajes, la toma de decisiones éticas, el conflicto moral. Y claro que la aventura y la ciencia atraviesan la novela de cabo a rabo (como es costumbre en Verne), pero son solo el soporte para que se desarrolle el conflicto humano.
La trama se centra en el viaje de un barco (El Chancellor) que pretende transportar algodón, desde la costa Este de los EEUU hasta Liverpool. El Capitán pierde la cordura y dirige la embarcación de manera errática y cede el mando al segundo a bordo (Robert Curtis). Descubren que la bodega se va incendiando lentamente y no pueden hacer nada puesto que en cuanto abran, el oxígeno provocará la catástrofe. Poco a poco, la embarcación se deteriora y empieza a hundirse. Hasta que se ven obligados a abordar una balsa recién construida. Navegarán sin rumbo y a la deriva. Sufrirán todas las inclemencias del tiempo. Algunos se suicidarán, otros intentarán sublevarse, habrá asesinatos, peleas, habrá canibalismo. Es fácil entender que el conflicto moral siempre esté presente.
La novela en realidad es el diario de uno de los pasajeros (J. R. Kazallon). Un detalle que le da veracidad a la novela, es que si bien este es un observador y relator de lo que sucede, llegará el momento que llevado por el hambre, él mismo olvida el comportamiento ético y pelea con otro por comerse una rebanada de tocino. Y así lo narra en su diario. Es como enloquecer en ratos.
La primera mitad de la novela (en la que se narra los problemas del Chancellor), es de ritmo lento, y por momentos, poco atractiva. Contrasta con el frenesí de la segunda mitad. Por cierto que el nombre de la novela refiere al nombre de la embarcación, pero en realidad ese barco se hunde y la verdadera acción ocurre en la balsa salvavidas.
Dato curioso. En todos los libros que he leído de Verne, en los momentos de mayor adversidad de las aventuras de los personajes, nunca se menciona el problema de cómo cagaban y orinaban. Quizás haya sido pudor por parte de Verne o una especie de autocensura. En esta novela se habla de canibalismo y suicidio pero no se habla de cagar. A pesar de viajar en una balsa improvisada en un ambiente hostil entre los personajes, no se refiere a esa situación. Debió haber sido todo un conflicto práctico y ético... Interesante.
