A feel good book perfect for a cosy weekend reading with a hot cup of filter coffee. I love any story that takes me back to the 90s, the golden era. The author takes us on a nostalgic journey of Kumar and his love for Chennai. From idlis to IIT, loved the south indian touch in the plot. The arranged marriage set up is so true and hilarious. Personally, I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading more such interesting stories from Lakshmi Priya.

I would like to thank Lakshmi Priya for sharing this review copy of her debut novel. I thoroughly enjoyed her writing. Wishing the author good luck for many more great stories like this one!

This is by far the funniest book I’ve ever read. It was sometimes difficult for me to keep my laughing in check. The narrative will just astound you.

This narrative gives us the perspective of a mischievous toddler who is constantly up to something. We’ll also learn how someone who despises all subjects eventually falls in love with one and makes it his passion.

Although this is a humorous storey, there are many lessons to be learned from it. This book has completely blown my head. I’ve only read a handful amusing novels in my life, and this was the finest of them.

At points, I felt like I was reading a stand-up comedy while reading this book. There are so many twists and turns in this narrative. In this narrative, there is always something unexpected that happens.

Overall, it was an incredible and hilarious roller coaster journey for me. This book was a lot of fun for me, and I’m very sure you’ll appreciate it as well

Millennial Kumar Gets Married At Last! by Lakshmi Priya is a light, fun, and relatable read about a groom’s plight in the Indian marriages. The author concerns the voice of many grooms through the lead character named Kumar. The novel deals with the groom profile that one has to make or maintain to get better life partner in terms of appearance, family backdrop, dowry, earning and so on.

The story starts in a reverse order where we see the lead character Kumar is getting anxious at the Chennai Airport. But how did he reach there and why was he so unhappy and frustrated? Well, the reason was marriage. Then suddenly the book takes us to the time of 90s – kids that grew and studied during the decade of 90s could relate better with Kumar.

The author explained well as what ingredients are required to rope in a perfect sounding marriage, except love. Indian parents look for thousand things to make matches but ignore aspects like love, compatibility, attitude, etc.

Well, when Kumar is of marriageable age, in fact before that, his parents begin preparing him for that. He has a good job above all. When the melodrama of seeing brides begins, the real fun pours in. Kumar’s plight to impress or fit in his parents expectations is really funny. He goes for bride selection but every time an obstacle awaits him. Why? Get in the story. How marriages are seen and forced on to innocent grooms – if you want to see that better pick up this contemporary fiction. It is almost a satire on Indian marriages.

I received the book as a review copy, so I would like to thank Lakshmi for the same and for following up with Amazon for the hurdles that we had in the process of accepting the book. I appreciate her proactive interactions with Amazon customer service and getting things move so I can receive my review copy.
Coming to the story, a good start for my 2022 read, a pleasant read. The story is more like a biography of Kumar, from his childhood to marriage. It did trigger a few of my own old, golden days of school and college. A few things, flashed off from past when reading the incidents in the book, though not exactly same but some incidents which made me a little emotional and a lot happier.
Kumar is an average student, or say a little below that, his school life is shadowed and his big fear is his elder brother, best friend is little sister and of course his BRO. The story includes some usual incidents that can be seen in a mid-class colonies and lives. So the war for water, the school issues and more so the brother issues are so much common that we can relate many things to our own life or surroundings.
Preethi, class mate and neighbour, I did have one in my life too. So would many of us might have had such friends who were our enemies to all our tricks to spend more time playing, with friends and what not. I liked the way the character of Kumar was built. I could also relate myself when Kumar really did not wish to go to US. I was so much against going to US myself.
The marriage proposals and the reasons for rejections are not far from reality too, they sure sound hilarious but there are instances similar and silly enough to be part of the book. I did enjoy those reasoning too. Specially when a girl tells Kumar, “I want to get married but I do not want a mother-in-law, brother, sister and father is fine but no living mother-in-law.” I wondered if she was actually asking Kumar that if you can just kill your mom, I am ready to marry you. Of course the others were funny and silly at the same time but again not far from reality.
The best thing I liked, “for the first time in history of school, a new dairy was given as the old one was filled with notes from teachers”, this triggered a lot of my memories, I would like to tell the author that going by the year mentioned in the book, it could only be second, or may be first in Chennai. I sure know my friend has taking that first place in our school days.
This book is a light heartful casual read. Keeps you smiling not just with what we read but also from what we pull out from our own memories. The story is not something that you would be thrilled but it is all those memories that one collects while reading makes the book so nice. The story goes simple with no dramatic ups and downs, nothing unpredicted happens in the story. Kumar is just like a little of you and a little or your friends.
This is for sure a relaxing read, if you wish to just read through with no stress, strain on the story or characters. Do read it I am sure you would feel the same I did. 😊

Journey of an Indian bridegroom

I started reading this book with great expectations of all the funny, weird, awkward but oh so familiar journey of an Indian millenial's foray into the marriage market and I'm glad to say the book did not disappoint. It has almost all the ingredients of a humourous, well thought-of and well-executed story on this subject starting from childhood background, familial influences, quirky friend circle, past experiences, etc. etc. The only reason I say almost... is because I felt that a bit more of romance would've been good to add as a great finish to the story. Perhaps, it could be because I am a hopeless romantic at heart or just because I felt that it would've worked as the perfect 'tadka' for this amazing dish. Either way, I liked the story and enjoyed reading about Kumar's exploits from boyhood to youth.

If you love Indian humour, this is the book for you. Congratulations Lakshmi! Hopefully you will be coming out with a part 2 on the Pitiable Indian Husband? Looking forward to it.

BOOK REVIEW
BOOK -" Millennial Kumar gets married at last!"
AUTHOR - " Lakshmi Priya "
GENRE - " Comedy, Fiction "

As the tagline goes and the coverpage suggests , this the story of a pitiable Indian groom Kumar. This is the first book which made me laugh out loud. Every line reminded me as to why I love India so much and how it is part of me. The language, the culture, the food, the family, friends, school , relationships, collegelife, relatives and the roads - every line in this book richly gave tribute to the Indianness which is unique and makes us feel at home. The author has not only lived up to the coverpage but gave us much more and I'm adding her to my favorite author list. Oh yes. I secretly maintain one. 😉

This is the story of Kumar - naughty, carefree, the middle son of Padma- the melodramatic middle class mom and the conceding dad Sekar who shrugs his shoulders in defeat for almost everything- a reflection of a pitiable Indian husband.

Kumar is the brother of Veda - a silent observer who devours, analyses and takes a mental note of people she comes across and is a shield to her brother from their parents frustration. Their elder brother Sundar is the genius of the family.

The family shifts through various houses and each house is depicted according to the surroundings and gives us a vivid picture. The slang of the book is so refreshing and typical Indian english but very well written. Being a south Indian, Kumar is rightly in love. With IDLI and Sambar. His love for idlis made me carve for one.

Kumar has bro, Nandhu & Varun who are part of his close circle. Their antics makes one laugh out loud.

All is going well for Kumar but life is about to take a U turn.

What is it?

How will Kumar dodge the bullet with his idli powered brain ?

Will he be able to escape ?

Read the book to find out. I loved every bit of the book and it made me fall in love with Chennai again and again. I solemnly swear on my love for Idli that I will read the author's books from now on. Do read and fall in love with the Indian culture again and again.

Indian arranged marriages are typical and complicated for a person. There are too many requirements to be fulfilled when looking for groom or bride.
Parents become so obsessed over their child to get married as early as possible because according to them if the age passed over 30, it will become difficult for the person to get their eligible bride or groom.

One such story is about protagonist Kumar, a south Indian boy who always believed to live his life and never followed his parent's instructions. There was whole life story of Kumar where he experienced a lot of trouble with studying, his parents forcing him to study for IIT and finally for marriage. He always got compared to his elder brother who was good at everything. And being forced by his parents to get married where he hated the opposite gender since his school times. The story was hilarious and filled with humour about how he got rejected by many families just because of silly reasons few of them was his love for idlis, his hate for cats etc. His mother doing these insane things told by guruji And finally he was sent to US just to be called US return so that he can find his bride easily. And there, his life twisted bringing his hateful past in front of him.

It was all about typical Indian person and his life story. Although I liked the book all over as it was interesting and humourous but sometimes this felt like a little childish in some places. One thing i found common with me and kumar is the love for idlis..❤

It was a short read and in simple language. There were points which were relatable where i felt pity on Character too on how he was expected to be good and successfull regardless the fact that he is different from his other siblings and not interested in any of these rat races. Well as a debut book, author is appreciated in thinking of such a beautiful, pitiful, twisted but funny story of Kumar.

The book is good for beginners who want to start their reading journey with a short and interesting read...

The book revolves around the character Kumar. After his childhood, yesteryears of college and job, his bride finding sessions do not go as planned. It’s a short novel that has high humour, comedy in a deep storyline.

Indian parents are obsessed over getting married before 30. Kumar is one such guy who doesn’t follow the demands of his parents. He is coming from a South Indian family, but his mindset is more different than what his culture states. He meets a lot of girls for marriage vivaciously but doesn’t find anything common in their notion.

The storyline is so relatable that every Indian who is a millennial would definitely find a common ground. Kumar being subjectively compared to his brother, and his childhood days are more in the hands of his parents rather than his voice, the pain over subjecting him to the IIT forcefully and all the other traumas a child's face is written in a comical way in this book.

His love for idlis would make you drool over pages. You would not be able to stop yourself a plate of idli sambar. The story is so realistic that you can feel it happening near you where you are a part of Kumar’s journey to find his right mate. The whole journey of him getting married to the lady of his choice is so dramatic and full of surprises that you may want to reread a few paragraphs again and again. But the question is would he find the right girl even after all the family drama?

The character descriptions are apt and on point. The book has not been dragged with memoirs of a traumatic childhood but written in such a way that you would laugh it out loud with the subtle touches of humour. It’s a light-hearted read and a short book that could be read in a sitting. The narration is short and comprehensive. It is recommended mostly for the millennials and singles who would sympathize with the whole story, but with a burst of laughter.

“Marriages are made in heaven.”

Whom am I kidding? Marriages are made by our extended family and their extended family. This isn’t a bond made magically but analytically after considered everything from zodiac sign to food habits (not compatibility, of course).

Kumar grows up in a middle-class household where decisions about his life are made by everyone except him. Be it joining a language class or surviving the IIT coaching, nothing was ever done as per his will. So when he turned 27, his mother inevitably dragged him along to various astrologers so that they can match him with “the one”.

The arranged marriage market functions based on a voluminous list of factors for each gender. Whether you really want the marriage right now isn’t included. The author takes a hilarious plunge not only at arranged marriage system but at Indian families in general. It is quite relatable to millennials as the title promises.

The book focuses not only on Kumar’s marriage but his life till the thirty (which is the upper limit for eligible bachelorhood in the arranged marriage market). It is commendable how the author put herself into Kumar’s shoes at each stage. Only then could his character be relatable. Her presentation of family relationships and situations with humour is perfect. The story is set mainly in Tamilnadu and the English is very simple. However, I felt that towards the end, the story was rushed up hastily. It could have been longer after his thirtieth birthday because that’s when the trouble intensifies.

It was a great attempt at humour and social issues. I started reading as soon as I downloaded and finished in a single sitting. Those who have joined the Indian marriage waiting list shouldn’t miss this book.

As the name suggests It is the whole journey of our protagonist Kumar until he gets married at last. The book takes us from the time period of 1991 to 2016 showcasing his childhood, teenage, college years, and his job.
The main thing I liked about this book is how relatable it was. There's a phase in everyone's life when they are in their school when they hate their opposite gender LOL!! Kumar and his friends too have this and actually made a big deal out of it. Then there is this constant peer pressure, pressure from the parents and relatives to be like a certain way. The rat race that our parents put in so that we could be an engineer or doctors. When we finish our studies and finally get a job and think that maybe now we are free, suddenly the whole thing about marriage pops up. Both men and women have a tough time in the 'market' of matrimony sites where they are treated as commodities to be sold.

The fun part is, all this is presented in a smooth and funny way by the author and it is a short read.
The language is lucid and the book is very much engaging. I recommend this to everyone who wishes to have a fun short read

The book begins with the story of Kumar as a brat and details his antics during his school days. This is very typical in a family where you are the youngest and all your pranks and mischiefs tend to be overlooked.

It goes on to portray the travails and the tribulations of a typical South Indian groom in finding a suitable bride for marriage.
This would resonate with all South Indian grooms of the early part of this century when It was a default requirement for a South Indian brahmin boy to find a job in the USA.
Today there has been a role reversal with the groom at the receiving end and the bride-to-be and her family laying down the requirements for a groom-to-be.

It is narrated in an easy, jovial style and is a wonderful read.
Some particular quotes I liked very much

Description of idli
"Simple but spectacular. It’s a perfect output of a love combo of rice and dal. A guilt-free food which when wedded with sambar and chutney transports me to another world."

It ends with a very relevant quote - "He transitioned from being “The Pitiable Indian Groom,” becoming “The Pitiable Indian Husband.”

Kudos to LaxmiPriya - a wonderful book to read, I read it in one sitting.

Travel with a groom from South India- Nicely written humor. A debut story from the young aspiring author Lakshmipriya. Of course the author aptly wrote in the introduction –“this society of grooms became a laughingstock of the nation.” Story follows such a laughing stock- Kumar. He tries everything to be a well fitted candidate. The word candidate is the right usage when it comes to arrange marriages in India. From childhood one always gets compared to neighbors, siblings etc., how well we do. Always in a race to better. Kumar got through all these humiliations as a child. In adulthood he struggles to please others. Society dictates one's life. This story very nicely portrays Kumar’s character which, I can say myself, have gone through a glimpse of these experiences, while growing up in South India. Will Kumar get success in his candidacy to get married? Will he be able to find the love of his life (or else learn to love after marriage like all arranged marriages do)? Read this debut story to find out.

A jovial and funny Kumar's marriage

First of all thank you Lakshmi for sending me a funny book for a review. This story is about as you know Kumar who is a Chennai born and is a Chennaiaite from heart body and soul, who loves idlis and treat them as god of food.
Story starts with Kumar leaving India or let's say Chennai for a job in California. He is struck with nostalgia and short relays his whole life till that point. Kumar being a small devil in the family how he crosses his childhood, his teen and his youthness. How his mom Padma tries to streamline his all devilness. How she is back bended to see him married. The book is really funny and jovial from start to end you will always have a smile on your face while reading the book. Even in the tense situation how Kumar handles it jovially. Author has really created a great character in Kumar
Overall I would say it's really really a very awesome Goodreads...🙂

Millennial Kumar gets married at last by Lakshmi Priya is the story of a guy named Kumar, who has a good job and earns well. But he still hasn't cleared one obstacle i.e of getting married.

His parents are searching for a bride for him. But every time he goes to meet them, they reject him for the silliest reasons. Kumar's parents even send him to the US, so that he can be called a US return. But now, his horrible past has come to meet him.

The language used by the author is beginner-friendly. The narration style of the author is relatable and gripping.

One thing I loved about this book is that even though it's a humorous book, there are a lot of lessons to learn from it.

This book cured my reading slump in just one sitting. It is a light and funny read.

Definitely recommended for beginners and readers looking for a humorous read.

Its been a long time since I laughed out loud while reading a book! Kumar is an average millennial who struggles to find himself a bride in the current brutal market of matrimony. As one last attempt to stay relevant in the marriage market, he is forced to leave to the States. How he ended up in this pitiable state has been narrated in a humorous way. Kumar’s woes are funny and relatable. The supporting characters are equally funny and hold the story so well. His dedicated mom, bachelor grandpa and like minded friends will instantly take a place in your heart.
The book ends with a possibility of a sequel. Cant wait to know how kumar manages married life ! Poor soul.

Humorous and highly relatable. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This novel narrates the story of a man named Kumar. Kumar has a good job, he settled in his life, but there is one problem that he is not married. His parents are looking for a suitable bride, but every time he goes to meet them the bride's family or the bride, they reject him and find some by giving weird reasons. Now that he could not find a suitable bride for him, his parents send him to US so that his parents could tell the bride's family that he is a foreign return guy. But will this change anything, Kumar's life?

It's actually a fun and interesting read. Obviously, I could understand Kumar's pain and his experiences but to be honest, I loved reading this novel. I would recommend this to readers if you are looking for light and amazing reads.
