”Is a mother’s love enough to save a family?”

More tissues please! That one, small handy-pack, just isn’t enough! Tears of sorrow, turn to tears of sadness, turn to tears of hope, turn to tears of joy – but definitely all tears of the heart-wrenching, very wet variety!

I couldn’t have predicted the coincidence that I would have found myself reading this particular book, at this precise moment in time, you really couldn’t make it up! Setting an objective tone for this review is going to be especially difficult, as the storyline was so very close to home and personal for me right now, so I was able to put myself totally in Beth’s shoes and see so many things from her perspective – and that didn’t always make me feel comfortable, or in a good place, so I hope that doesn’t make me too biased in my thinking! If the ending to my own story is as satisfying as that of the Spencer-Rhodes family, then I shall be more than happy, but I guess that any outcomes for me are going to be what I make them, much as they were for Beth!

No real sense of time or place, no death-defying, action fuelled plot. Just a beautifully fluid and compelling blend of story and characters, with emotions and family tensions providing the rather disturbing backdrop for some wonderfully descriptive, observational narrative, and desperately brutal, painfully honest dialogue.

Although this story was narrated from a few alternative perspectives and travelled back and forth over a period of several years, the chapters were very easy to follow, as the cast was relatively small and easy to keep track of, which meant that the finished book never felt ‘bitty’ or disjointed.

Is it so wrong to want a better start in life and continued financial security for yourself and your family, than you had in your own childhood – no matter that your own upbringing was the best it could possibly have been at the time and in the prevailing circumstances, and that you had never been deprived of that most important of commodities – love, which is free for everyone!

So now you have your own family, what happens when your perfectly constructed and choreographed life comes crashing down round your ears, leaving you disbelieving and devastated, yet angry and wanting revenge. When you and your partner are both left feeling individually hard done by, each convinced that the other is to blame, and each consumed by selfish thoughts of self-preservation and vindication? When you seem to have traded love and affection for security and betterment, and when it turns out that you don’t really know each other after all these years together, as you have never taken the time to allow him to open up about his own past and the demons he carries with him to this day. You give no real thought to the immense pressure you are putting him under to keep you and the children in the style to which you have become accustomed, and you fail to notice the mental anguish you are causing him and the hidden stress you are heaping on the children in your efforts to secure their social status, when all they really want is to spend quality family time with you, have your undivided attention and know that they are loved and accepted unconditionally.

This was a well structured, intense, multi-layered story, completely immersive, wonderfully textured and with powerful moral values and family ethics at its heart. As the storyline was busy taking shape, moments of anything resembling light-hearted banter or god forbid, humour, were so few and far between, as to be almost be non-existent. So to feel the tensions ease and the entire aura surrounding the family lift and lighten as the climax of the book was reached and the plot began to wind down, was quite something to behold, and was so deeply visual, that I could almost feel myself letting go of that long-held breath and all that claustrophobic angst and grief; breathing in the fresh air of new beginnings.

Sam has created a cast of well drawn and defined characters, who develop and grow into their roles as their individual stories unfold and are brought to life. Yes, they are complex and emotionally starved, often raw and passionate, sometimes unreliable and volatile; however they are basically genuine and vulnerable, addictive and believable, and authentically true to the life they have been conditioned for. Their latent inner strength of humanity and passion, their joie de vivre and enthusiasm for life, has luckily not been lost though, and evolves as they are afforded the new found freedom to be themselves.

The one small niggle I did have, was that whilst the heart-warming future of new beginnings was satisfyingly wrapped up for Beth, Drew and the children, with Drew’s sister Gemma also finding a new and exciting focus for her life, I was left to ponder and wonder what became of Beth’s parents and her sister, who were so very pivotal to the storyline, and in fact, caused much of the stress and tension between Beth and Drew, albeit not in any way deliberately. However, that in no way diminished the emotional intensity and power of this storyline, so it still gets the big 5 star thumbs up! from me.

For me personally, reading is always such a joy, as each new book and story takes me on a journey which will offer me a unique experience whilst I am reading. This is definitely one of those storylines which has so many different perspectives, that I recommend you read it for yourself and see where your journey leads you.

And remember, never judge someone until you have walked a mile in their shoes!

WOW! Just WOW! My Silent Husband was such a great read! This book is jam packed with all kinds of real life like people and families with real life like problems, my favorite kind of book!

Drew is husband to Beth, stay at home mom of their four kids, the youngest with Down’s syndrome, and a hole in her heart. Drew has not been OK for a long time. Sixteen days went by without his wife asking how his day was, no one really pays any attention to him, no one listens to him unless he raises his voice. He admitted to himself that he wasn’t strong enough to go on, that what he did was never enough, and felt that no one would notice if he was gone. Beth had no idea he felt this way until after he attempted suicide, but after she learned so much more from his sister Gemma. Drew confided in Gemma so Gemma felt strong feelings against her sister in law. After experiencing Beth’s absence and then short silent stays, she finally blurted awful (but very possibly true) accusations and remarks to her, much to Beth’s surprise. Beth, holding her own judgments against her sister in law who has been struggling to stay clean and sober for years, not only retaliates with her own accusations, but also begins to self-reflect and start to see a different side to her husband, her life, and herself. Meanwhile while Drew is in the hospital, Beth is trying to juggle being a mom to her kids, one who is a difficult teen clearly going through his own issues (which open up as the book progresses).

This all reminds me that everyone handles grief and emotions differently. Family requires time and attention. When your life needs to change, be open and honest with each other. Slow down. Don’t take each other for granted or assume everything and everyone is OK. Communicate, talk, share, love.

Sam Vickery is such a fantastic author and I am a big fan. After reading “A Letter from Sam” at the end of the book, her inspiration as to why she wrote it, and her thoughts and input on several controversial and important topics addressed in her book, I can easily see why I am drawn to her books. Please keep on writing these books, Sam!

This was a heart wrenching read that had me running for my tissues every few minutes. The prose was fluid with emotions that blended smoothly with the characters where the dynamics within the family were beautifully encapsulated. This was simply some good writing. A great read.

I completely loved Her Silent Husband. Sam Vickery owns a powerful, beautifully flowing prose and uses it sublimely to draw wonderfully cut characters who are raw, flawed, relatable and so real you completely feel their emotions.
I was hooked right away from the prologue and it has been an exceptional journey, heart wrenching yes, but beautiful.
I've never been disappointed by this author!

Beth is up to her neck as ever trying to sort out the kids and their various activities when she receives a call to say that her husband Drew is in the hospital and it’s quite serious much to her surprise. His sister Gemma isn't so shocked as Beth and so begins some secrets being revealed- things Beth had absolutely no idea about the whole time she has been with Drew. As time goes on Beth learns more and more about her husband and how fragile her own life now is and how dependent they were on him. Her eldest son Tristan is from her first marriage and her youngest has Downs and hence requires more attention and therapy. A life built on Drew’s salary is now precarious.
Gemma thinks about how rather selfish and naive Beth was. Yes she has four children to look after but has had a very privileged position in not working and also having help around the house. The fact that she knows nothing about finances and general things means she has left everything to Drew to sort out- something that is reflected by Gemma, Drew's sister who resents her sister in law for obvious reasons.
There is a message within this book- one that tells us how important it is to be happy and that all the money in the world can’t buy that. To want a good education and stimulation for all of us, yes is important, but to have some fun in life is equally so.
An enjoyable read with that all important message- one life - live it.

I enjoyed reading this book, but I wasn’t the biggest fan of Beth.

Beth and her husband appear to have a wonderful life together with their four children. But when Drew attempts to take his life at work one day, the beautiful facade begins to crumble. Beth, a stay-at-home mother, begins to wonder how she will pay the bills and manage their children on her own if Drew never wakes up from the coma.

When Drew’s sister, Gemma, shows up at the hospital, she isn’t surprised to see her, but with the secrets she knows her husband has been keeping, it suddenly becomes all too much for her to handle. She thought she knew her husband, but he’s beginning to feel more and more like a stranger.

At times I found this book frustrating to read. Beth was so caught up in her four children’s lives and their day to day activities, that she didn’t see what was really happening around her. And to make matters worse, she let their needs (or what she thought they needed) overshadow her relationship with her husband. Every time Drew tried to talk to her to her, Beth always seemed to be in a rush and would cut the conversation short. I honestly wanted to slap her whenever she did that.

But looking beyond Beth’s character, it was a good read and I’d recommend this book.

I really love this series. It just keeps getting better. While this one works as a stand alone, I think you’ll appreciate it even more if you read the series.

Maggie and her team are increasingly baffled trying to figure out the connection in a series of gruesome murders. I like the depth of the characters, the portrayal of the social services system and the action packed plot.

I highly recommend this one to anyone who loves a great crime series.

Her Silent Husband by Sam Vickery was another beautifully written book by Sam. I look forward to her books.
This book is a very emotional read and had me gripped from the beginning. A real page turner that I didn’t want to put down as I wanted to find out what happens to the characters.

Trigger warning-depression, attempted suicide, and drug use is written within this book.

TW: Suicide

Her silent husband is a book about the things a woman discovers after her husband tries committing suicide for no apparent reason.

It is a story of abuse, grief, communication and love. And I really liked it. It felt like a hidden gem.

Every character in this book was so real and raw, they all had their all flaws and that is what made it so beautiful.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Her Silent Husband' by Sam Vickery.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Sam Vickery, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 15th November 2021.

This is the fourth book I have read by this author. I have previously read 'One Last Second', 'My Only Child' and 'Save My Daughter' which I highly recommend.

I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that 'Fans of Jodi Picoult, Kelly Rimmer and Diane Chamberlain will be captivated by this unforgettable page-turner.' I am a huge fan of Jodi Picoult and Diane Chamberlain so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a huge fan of Sam Vickery and if this is half as good as 'One Last Second', 'My Only Child' and 'Save My Daughter' it is sure to be a page turning read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue and 44 chapters. The chapters are medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is set in Washington, USA 🇺🇸.

This book is written in first perspective and the main protagonists are Beth and Gemma. The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. If there are several protagonists you also get to see more of what is going on.

'Her Silent Husband' discusses some topics that may trigger some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Sam discusses/includes suicide, child abuse and drug addiction.

Well, Well, Well, Sam Vickery you have done it again!!! Congratulations on yet another breathe taking novel!! 🎉

This book is extremely well written and the layout with the past and present chapters are perfect. They drip feed you information of what has gone on in the past with just the right amount of information to give you an idea of what is going on but not too much so that you work it all out. The cover and blurb work perfectly with the storyline.

Wow!! What an absolutely breathe taking and heart stopping storyline. Every partners worst nightmare and as a partner and a mother it had me absolutely hooked. It is a beautiful and devastating plot that really shows the true, raw and gripping emotions of how loved ones feel when someone decides to take their own life. I really resonated with this story as my uncle did exactly that and you can't explain the anger, devastation and grief you go through but Sam had it down to a tee. It actually made me wonder if she went through something similar herself as she captivated the feelings I felt absolutely perfectly when I discovered what had happened it is filled with grief, anger, resent, denial, tears and so so so much more!!! . It just completely blew me away and left me sitting there thinking how life can change in a second. It also made me question what would I do and how would I feel if I was in the situation of either Gemma or Beth . Would I forgive Drew?

However, it wasn't just the one heart tugging storyline as you had the other subplots going on at the same time with Gemma and Tristan. I won't say too much as I don't want to give to much away but oh how I felt for Beth, Gemma and Tristan. Have your tissues at the ready ladies and gents cause this one is a complete tear jerker!!!

The storyline was set at a perfect pace, not too fast and not too slow. It gave just the right amount of time for you to be able to take everything in as it was happening and question yourself about what you would do. It really is thought provoking.
It is an absolute roller-coaster ride of emotions and filled with love, deceit, secrets, tension and trust. A very powerful and gripping depiction of the power and intensity of family, love and what you do for you children.. It sucked me in from page one until the tear jerking ending.

It is set over multiple time lines. When books show what has happened in the past and what is happening in the present I find it really helps the reader (if it is well done) understand why things are happening and what has lead to the present activities and decisions. It also shows the bigger picture

The characters are unique, well defined and realistic. The strength of Beth and Gemma absolutely shine through as does the devastation Drew is going through and also created. Many would dislike Beth for her attitude but if I have been in a similar position and her feelings almost mirrored mine with the anger and grief. Nobody knows how they would react until they are in that situation. I did have a lot of sympathy for Beth but I also had sympathy for Gemma, Tristan and also later on for Drew. This book shows the power and devastation of what one person's actions do to a whole family.

I would absolutely love to see this turned into a movie!!! Another congratulations to Sam Vickery and I do believe that Jodi Picoult and Diane Chamberlain have some strong competition here when it comes to the book charts. Looking forward to her next gripping, and going by all her previous work, what promises to be heart rendering.

Overall an. Emotionally raw, heart breaking, page turning, tear jerking and powerful novel of a parents love and sacrifice and of heartbreak and devastation. Powerful and addictive

Genres covered in this novel include Romance Novel, Domestic Fiction and Romance Fiction amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Jodi Picoult, Kelly Rimmer and Diane Chamberlain.

304 pages.

This book is just 99p to purchase on kindle via Amazon or free on kindle unlimited which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

⭐️1/2 this is a book about self absorbed people who have no idea how communication works. There’s suicide, drug abuse, and loads of secrets…but by the end, it’s all rainbows and butterflies and jugs of lemonade.

This was my first time reading this author and my first impression was that I enjoyed her writing style with the perfect balance of narrative and dialog. Beth is a very busy mother of four extremely concerned with keeping up with The Joneses and making sure that her children have near-perfect lives. They are wealthy, live in a home in Notting Hill, and have what appears to be an envious family life. But then she gets the call that her husband Drew is in the hospital. Frustrating to me, she seemed very inconvenienced about having to go to the hospital when his secretary simply tells her he has had an accident. But upon arrival, she learns that Drew tied a rope around his neck and stepped off of his desk in an attempt to end his life. Now she is left with four children (one special needs), a house to run, and no earthly clue how to access any money or pay any bills.

Let me begin by saying that although I completely sympathized with Beth's predicament, I was very quickly annoyed by how helpless she was. In this day and age, I feel that a woman should know how to access accounts and pay bills. Yes, she was primarily in charge of taking care of their four children and running them from this practice to the next for music, swimming, etc., but she literally had no clue how to pay an electricity bill.

But even more frustrating was that she did not know her husband in the least, and knew very little about her children. Yes, she was accustomed to Ceci's outbursts and habits because of her having Down's Syndrome and needing that extra bit of attention, but otherwise, she was oblivious to the wants and needs of everyone living under her roof. She won me over in the end and made my heart happy, but she was a challenge to like for most of the novel.

Then there was Gemma, Drew's sister. I'm sorry but she was just too much for me. An addict stuck with the haunts of her past, Gemma coasted from one minimum wage job to the next, entertaining various addictions to various substances, all the while acting like the same six-year-old girl who went through a horrible six months with her brother. I am not belittling childhood trauma or the power of addiction, but she truly had no redeeming qualities. I feel that her character completely overplayed the "pitiful baby sister" role and honestly needed to grow up and pull her head out of her ass. Her brother obviously was struggling with enough of his own demons that he shouldn't have still been her emotional crutch all of those years later.

Now that I have expressed a small fraction of my issues with the main characters, let me tell you what I loved about this! First is the theme stressing the importance of teamwork in marriage and parenting. Regardless of career choices, it took two to get married and no one has any babies alone, so both parties need to chip in. Secondly, kids need to be allowed to be kids with unstructured time and just spontaneous family outings or games. Not everything has to be a sport or class that results in a participation ribbon. And finally, the importance of true communication. Maybe he wasn't assertive enough, but Drew did attempt to talk to Beth before his suicide attempt. If you are sitting down with your spouse and they are upset and looking at you with pleading eyes - for God's sake listen to what they need to say!

Sam Vickery has shone a light on so many common hiccups in the family dynamic throughout this novel from losing jobs, special needs children, bills to pay, and co-dependent siblings. Was this novel frustrating as hell? Yes! However, it was very honest and raw, illustrating the true feelings of each character regardless of how uncomfortable it was. This is not an uplifting novel by any means, except for the last few chapters that made my heart sing, but I think it's an important novel in that there are numerous people out there right now that need to read this.

I really rate this at 3.5 but will round up to 4 stars.

I received an e-ARC version of this book from NetGalley and the publisher.

“Her Silent Husband,” by Sam Vickery, follows Beth as she navigates her busy life. She’s Mum to four children and is busy running the household and running her children to/from events (school, sport, other). Her husband, Andreas, is the sole breadwinner. One day, Beth gets a call and eventually learns that Andreas is in a coma. Beth feels like her world is collapsing around her - how is she going to juggle the kids’ schedules, keep the house, and still do all she needs to do for her family? We also meet Andreas’s sister, Gemma, who is devoted to her brother, but has some hidden issues of her own.

I have to admit - I loved the title of this book and how well it fits the overall story. I really liked how this book addresses some difficult issues - depression and mental health are finally being discussed, but so often male depression is not addressed or even accepted. The other issue I liked being addressed was how difficult it is to “keep up with the Jones’s.” I had a chuckle at Beth realizing that she didn’t have the proper coffee machine to entertain the school Mums and needed one pronto, though I realized that sadly that scene hits a little bit too closely to home for some people. Also addressed is the foster care system. I’ve known people (both foster parents and foster kids) who had great experiences and I’ve known people who had horrible experiences. The foster care parts were handled decently (not the best experience, not the worst), which I appreciated. I did like the parts where it was obvious Beth was trying to hold things together, but obviously spinning out of control. While I believe some of her thoughts/actions were spur of the moment things (such as asking about possibly canceling an upcoming school trip), I can empathize with her thoughts being unorganized and scattered. I also found the message of “be happy with what you have and count your blessings every blessed day” a very true one. Keeping up with the Jones’s isn’t easy … and you’re never ‘caught up’ or surpassed them - be happy with what you have and enjoy life.

My one slight negative comment is that except for Andreas (and the youngest daughter), I cannot say I really felt sympathy for any of the characters. I believe that the characters were well written and well developed, but I cannot say that I wanted to have coffee with any of them (even made on that fancy machine). However, as I said before, addressing hard topics is always a plus in my book - and this author did address them. Do read the Author’s Note for information on how this story evolved. A strong four stars.

Trigger warnings: attempted suicide, depression, drug use.

Her Silent Husband, Sam Vickery

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre: Women's Fiction

Bah! Women's Fiction – why?? Such an outdated, sexist category. I'm sure there are many women that will relate to Beth, but I'm sure there are many men who feel as Drew does, why are we ignoring them?
Anyway, I enjoyed this story, didn't love it but thats more the personalities than the story.

I found Beth and Gemma both difficult characters to like. They're both escaping from their pasts in very different ways, but excluding everyone else in their determination to forget it.
In Beth's case she's become a kind of manic mum, where the children and their futures rule her life. In Ceci's case there are more issues of course, and things that can't be left, but she seems to have no time left for the man she professes to love. Drew tries to talk, but he's so determined to take care of her and his sister that he steps back when they close him off. Neither intend to but that's what happens, and he's left with burdens he can't talk about.
Gemma is permanently in the role of little sister, but she isn't coping with what happened, and her way of trying to avoid it is causing distress for Drew.
Drew, I so felt for him. We do tend to follow roles set out for us, and he was put in the position of taking care of Gemma at a very young age, and transfers that to Beth too. Her reactions at the hospital shook me. I was surprised early when we see how they met, that it appears as if she's out for a rich, personable husband more than someone to love. It made me wonder if she ever really loved him for himself more than what he could provide.
By the end I felt Beth did love him, but I find it hard to get past that reaction when she first heard what happened, how she was when he was in hospital. I understood Gemma more by the end too, though I did find the ending somewhat fairy-tale after all the hard realities of what is for so many people, every day life.

Stars: Three, maybe three and a half I think might be fairer. Its a kind of mixed read for me, really well written, serious issues that so many folk are going through, but there were parts I found hard to accept.

Sam Vickery’s Her Silent Husband is a visceral, emotional and powerful page-turner that will break your heart.

When Beth had gone to answer the phone, she never imagined that her whole world was going to come crashing down around her. The hospital was on the other end of the line and she was informed that her strong, loving and caring husband was in a coma. Beth is shocked to her very core and as she rushes to be by Drew’s side, she is assailed by happy memories of their marriage and completely devastated by the fact that life as she knew it was going to change irrevocably. Everything Beth had which she took for granted was now gone forever, but little does she realise that there are further shocks and revelations coming her way…

As her entire family rallies round her, Beth vows not to leave Drew’s bedside. Grief-stricken and heartbroken, Beth cannot imagine being anywhere else but by her husband’s side. However, when his sister Gemma comes to visit, Beth finds herself taken aback by her sister-in-law’s demeanour. It is clear she is hiding something and it is even clearer that she knows the secret that Drew was hiding and which he hadn’t dared reveal to anyone – not even his wife…

With everything to lose, Beth wonders whether the man she had married will ever wake up from his coma and come back to her – or whether his dark secrets will end up destroying everything in their wake…

Sam Vickery’s Her Silent Husband is a compulsively readable domestic drama that grips like the tensest of thrillers as it examines trust, deception, guilt and just how well we know the people we choose to share our lives with. Affecting, searingly emotional and absolutely heart-wrenching, Her Silent Husband is a brilliantly written tale about courage, resilience and finding the strength to go on when all seems desperate, book clubs up and down the country will want to add to their lists of must-reads.

Perfect for Jodi Picoult fans, Sam Vickery’s Her Silent Husband is a powerfully written novel you won’t forget in a hurry.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Beth does not know which end is up when she gets a disturbing phone call but her husband is in the hospital. When she discovers the reason that he is there then she is truly beside herself. He is in a coma is due to his own hand and she can’t believe that he would give up on their family.

Beth and Drew have four children including a six-year-old who is still slowly recovering from heart surgery. Between caring for her and their other children with all of their activities Beth does not know how she’s going to sit by her husband’s bedside day after day until and if he wakes from his coma.

Beth is not alone and her concern for Drew. His sister Gemma is there from the beginning and she carries her own share of guilt and concern. Gemma is keeping secrets that might make it clearer to that as to why Drew took such drastic actions. As the story progresses, readers are privy to some of the serious challenges that Gemma has been experiencing and why she feels responsible for what Drew is going through now.

Will Beth and Gemma be able to come to terms with whatever is going on with Drew so that when he should awake they can rebuild? Meanwhile, how will Beth manage all of her responsibilities as a mother and as a wife who is just beginning to learn about lies and secrets that her husband kept from her?

What a touching story. This book tells of some serious issues such as a suicide attempt and some horrors involving the foster care system. It also touches on other serious matters in such a way that make this to be an utterly compelling read. It was very hard not to feel for any of the principal characters in this story but light did shine through as we reached the satisfying conclusion.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Beth is all about being a supermom/wife. She runs a tight schedule with her kids and husband. In fact, it is all over-scheduled. When she gets a call from her husband's (Drew) office that he had been taken to the hospital, she is concerned about the fact that he will not be available to look after their daughter while another goes to a swim meet. She shows no worry or concern for her husband that it could be serious. It's all about her inconvenience. And then there is Gemma, Beth's addicted sister in law who resents Beth but insists on being at the hospital with her brother.

That's how this book starts. I am fully prepared to not like Beth or Gemma. Not a promising beginning, not likeable characters. As the book evolves, so do the characters. There are huge life lessons in this story. The author does a great job with character development. Backstories are inserted to explain why their personalities are the way they are.

There are a lot of themes in this book. Drug addiction, suicide, the foster system, mental health, perceived status in society. These all go hand in hand.

Then the reader is shown how acknowledging and accepting the past, adopting a simpler life, learning to communicate can lead to happiness. It is an emotional story, there may be triggers for some.

Sam Vickery included a message at the end of the book, clarifying the background for writing the book and the issues she was trying to portray. They were all relevant to our times and I’m sure there are readers that will be able to relate.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an Advance Readers Copy of this book.

Rated 5/5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

TRIGGER WARNING: this book deals with suicide, drug addiction and child cruelty
Beth is running around after her four children after school when she gets a phone call she will never forget. Her husband is in hospital having attempted to take his own life...
Her Silent Husband is an emotional novel about an uneasy and unpleasant domestic situation.
Beth thought she had the perfect family but the facade crumbles as Drew tries to hang himself. His sister Gemma is an addict. The fourth child they wanted to complete their famiy has Down Syndrome. The pressure has become immense and the couple barely have time for each other any more.
I felt a real mixture of emotions as I read this book. The book is written from Beth and Gemma's first person perspectives and I found myself in tune with both lead characters equally. Part of me felt angry at Beth for her selfishness and taking Drew for granted. Another part of me was also annoyed for Gemma trying to make amends when she has been a source of worry to her family. Drew also received my anger at his choice to end his life. My sympathies were aroused by the lack of communication and the obvious distress and desperation the characters experience.
However, things are not straightforward. Secrets have been looming in the background which are gradually revealed as events in the book unfold. About a third of the way through, we get an insight into both Beth and Drew's childhoods which goes a long way to explaining their adult behaviour and significantly increased my sympathy towards these characters.
Her Silent Husband is an emotive novel about the danger of being unappreciative of what we have and taking loved ones for granted.

Visceral Look At The Underbelly Of Trying To Keep Up. This is one of those books that is largely depressing and frustrating - 75% or so of the book is all about a couple's fights, the wife/ mother's struggles with her kids, or the aunt's own demons. But even through here, while depressing, it is also very *real* - and that fact alone should be celebrated at times. Yes, many of us read to escape reality. But sometimes you need to see "reality" in fiction to get a degree of catharsis about your own situation, and this is one of those books that could actually help there. The flip in the last quarter or so is a bit abrupt, particularly given the characterizations to that point, and the almost Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King style check-in-with-every-major-character multiple epilogues was a bit hit or miss, but otherwise this was a solid story, one that discusses a lot of important concepts like male depression, a man's drive to provide for his family, a wife/ mother's drive to do the best by her kids, suicide, drug addiction (heroin specifically is particularly well done here), and a teenage boy's struggles to do the right thing even when "the right thing" isn't so crystal clear. Very much recommended.

This is a story of how things in people's childhood can affect them years later. How you get so busy, that you don't stop to look around and see what is really going on until it is almost too late. That day did come for Drew when he decided to try to kill himself. While he is in a coma, we learn what happens to his family. The guilt, the blaming themselves, wondering why they didn't see he was in so much pain. Picking up the pieces of their lives and figuring out what to do and where to go from here.
It is a powerful story, where they have to face what has been happening, seeing the mistakes that they each had made, and learning how to heal and move forward. The story might help someone who has been missing signs in their lives, it might make them think about what has been going on that they have been too busy to notice, or they might think about what their family and friends go through if they decide to try to take their own life, and it prevents them from doing it. This story takes you to the raw emotions, and ripping the band-aid off the wound, and you will feel it, and it is what it takes to be able to begin the process of healing.
I received an ARC from Bookouture through NetGalley.

This story really touched me deeply.

You are living the life of your dreams. You have great kids, a wonderful husband, a lovely house, enough money. Everything is picture perfect, right?

Well, you might be so lost in your busy life and being sure you do the best you can for everyone, but is that really the case?

It must be, because nobody complains.

Did you ever take the time to ask questions? Why should you because nobody speaks up.

Did you ever take the time to listen? Why should you because nobody speaks up.

Sometimes though silence says more than words.

Suddenly everything changes. You are angry, furious and you don’t know if you hate them or still love them.

Time to make some big decisions: should you stay or should you go, but how will you cope?

It’s always very hard when one person keeps his feelings hidden and keeps on playing the knight in shining armour. Letting someone in is not a sign of weakness. On the contrary, it often takes a lot of courage to bare your soul.

A beautiful book where taking a step back means taking a step forward to happiness, where ‘friendships’ are often built on the amount of money you have and not on who you are and you mean nothing to them when push comes to shove. 5 stars

Thank you, Sam Vickery and Bookouture

A moving & emotional book that stirs lots of feelings inside. Perhaps the true sign this book is good & hits your heart so well is because of the drug addiction & mental health realities that impact the characters. I honestly felt these characters were real people that I was witnessing going through struggles.

Drew suffers silently as is too common a situation for anyone struggling with mental health. No one seems to notice.

He describes his pain that he feels is need for him to not go on, having no choice & hoping his loved ones won’t hate him & hopes they understand

With mental health, there’s often a misconception by others that ending the pain is selfish when they really don’t know what’s going on that makes a person get to that point. People who’ve been at that point know the pain & that’s it’s nothing to do with being selfish. There’s a much more that goes on underneath it all that’s kept quiet while one suffers silently.

Here, you see both sides - one who thinks it’s selfish but the person who couldn’t go on has their own reasons.

To be honest, an unlikable main character almost derailed this book for me. I really did not like Beth for most of the story, which made it difficult to be sympathetic to her situation. But I stuck with it and ended up enjoying the book for the messages it imparts. I think the importance of allowing kids to be kids is often overlooked in today’s world, and this novel brings that point home clearly and with impact. Another good message in the book is how marriage is about teamwork, but that doesn’t just mean tag-teaming tasks. It means talking and coming to agreements with one another to build trust and understanding. All good things to keep in mind. This isn’t my usual genre, but I am glad I read it and would recommend it for the lessons learned by the family. For more details, please visit Fireflies and Free Kicks. Beth is the ultra mom. She lives in a very nice neighborhood with her husband and four kids. Her daughter has Downs Syndrome but that does not phase her. She is committed to her family and giving them the best. When she gets a call that her husband is in the hospital after attempting to take his own life, Beth rolls with it and focuses on her family.

This is a book that shows you how your childhood can shape the rest of your life. Beth, her husband, and her sister in law Gemma did not have the best childhoods. An overarching theme in the book is the need to make your and your families life better than you had growing up.

It can be a hard book to read with several hard topics but it is well worth the read. It makes you think especially in todays society where everything is on the move what is really best for your family.

Thank you the the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC for my honest review.

A Story For Your Heart

A bonafide love story that had to be told.

Drew and Emma had been married for 12 yrs.had four children. Their last,A little girl.with down-syndrome.
Their life was full to bursting. They lived in a four story mansion, the children went to private schools, were involved in so many lessons and activities, that Emma had to make duplicate itinerarys,so both she and Drew could get the children, everywhere on time.

One day impatiently waiting for Drew to get home, from his job,so he could do his share of shuffling the children around, The phone rang he wouldn't be coming.home !

You will want to read this delicious story to see what happened to Drew, Emma and the children and also Drew's sister, who plays a large part in this love story.

I hadn,'t read this author before, but, this story won't be my last time.
I hope this story touches your heart the way it did minr

The husband and wife seem to have it all. He earns a high income, they live in a beautiful home, their children are actively involved academically and in all kinds of "extra" activities. Why then does he attempt to kill himself? Why is his life so miserable he wants to end it. Does his sister hold the secrets to his misery? There is a strained relationship between the wife and sister. Can they heal the rift between them, learn to understand each other, and work together to save the man who lays unconscious? As they all struggle with the stresses of life, the father and husband lies in the hospital In a coma needing some healing to more than just his physical body. Sam Vickery has given this novel a good narrative, creative storyline, and plot, and interesting backstories to make this an entertaining book. If you like mysteries, family stories you will enjoy this book.

my new favorite author

This is the 2nd book by this author I have read and I’m impressed. This story is probably the story of a lot of seemingly happy, wealthy families living a dream life. I have often noticed the fancy houses in cities. They have swimming pools and tennis courts but you never see anyone using them. What’s going on behind those huge closed doors. What is happiness? Tragedy is a harsh teacher, but so many times harsh is kindness. I’ve experienced that one. This is a great story. You feel compassion for each character even as you watch them destroying their own happiness. You cry when they are so in control that they have no control. I feel like I know these people. Very few writers have this ability.

This book will take you on a journey of a couple with 4 children, one with medical issues, and how the lack of true communication can lead to choices you can’t take back. Shocked to get a call her husband is in the hospital and in a coma not because of an accident but from an attempt to take his own life.
Was the pressure of the Cost of their dream home, private schools and many activities for the kids too much for her husband to handle? Why did he not talk to her? What will she do now?

Thank you Netgalley for complimentary copy.

This book highlights the need to share your heart with your life partner and to not try to go it alone.
