All the promise this series showed in its first three volumes is fully in sight in these three, volumes 7 to 9. The humans are caught wrong footed when it appears the previously considered unintelligent Titans appear to be after Eren! Two Abnormal Titans appear in this omnibus taking humanity up to the brink but also giving them a lot more insight into their mortal enemies!

Wow, I am really deep in this series, so well paced as each little part of the mysterious Titan is revealed, new mysteries emerge. Aside from the hard to determine motion and character faces artwork, this is a truly compelling read, where I am desperate to know more and also struggle to see how humankind can get out of this one! Another Four Star, 8 out of 12 read.

“Humanity’s first defeat will only come when we stop fighting. As long as we keep fighting, we haven’t lost.”

Well, wasn't this a lovely sequence of events?

The beginning of it was a painful rollercoaster filled with blood, deceit, and hard choices all around that are really inductive to start questioning and exploring the world around these characters and, in a great sense, can be utilized in the world at large.

Going from one revelation to the next, the story advances at break-neck speeds and is ready to deliver a new turn and twist in an instant.

“A good person? I… don’t really like that phrase. I mean, that’s just what you call someone who acts in a way that’s beneficial to you. I don’t think anyone can act in a way that benefits everyone. So, if you’re not going to go along with the plan, that would make you a bad person to me.”

So far, the story has focused on a small group of characters but getting to see another set of them taking more page time and protagonism is an interesting development. The way Isayama writes them makes it easy to fall in love with each one of them but actually getting to expand on them is really fun and rewarding.

After all, there are so many things happening at once that getting to explore it from all angles really makes the picture take better form quicker.

Getting to form real bonds with the different characters, and explore their motivations, is always great as it adds the depth and weight for the world to feel a little more real and, well, adds all that emotional weight and investment that, at this point, is sure to make us suffer.

The 104th cadets are all so different but getting the mix of older characters as well with the Survey Corps veterans is actually a really interesting mix. Different points of view that make the narrative richer.

“I was taught you have to be on guard until the very end of the hunt! Please, [be] a hundred times more [careful] than usual! If you underestimate the forest, you’ll die!!”

Not surprisingly, the plot itself keeps becoming deeper, messier, and more complicated for every bit that it has cleared up.

Without losing the previous speed the pacing of the story keeps careening to something that promises to be spectacular and devastating. And continues to pick up steam with every pacing second and new revelation.

Mixing the ratio of answered questions and new ones is a great way to keep the interest and the fact that everything leads and feeds off each other so nicely makes it feel seamless and natural. Like the slowly unraveling of tangled cords.

“So this is the Survey Corps! No matter how badly they get beaten, they always keep fighting!”

As much as all the components of a good story are present and well-executed in this story my favorite thing is the meta-commentary and the philosophizing that takes place with characters like Armin, Hange, and Erwin.

Just, the little concepts and ideas that are being discussed, pressed on them because of terrible circumstances but valuable to be considered and analyzed regardless, are engaging and getting to see varied trains of thought and values make for an informative and rich discussion.

Cool fights, which we continue to have aplenty, are, of course, really fun and very nicely done but the more nebulous concepts that are needed to be taken into account in this situation are just as interesting to consider.

“I haven’t lived an especially long life but there’s one thing I’m sure of. The people capable of changing things are the ones who can throw away everything dear to them. When forced to face down monsters they can even leave behind their humanity. Someone who can’t throw anything away will never be able to change anything.”

________________

Alright, things got really interesting and picked up steam now.

Things are looking up and that can never end badly, can it?

So much can happen in three volumes that I cannot wait to see where we go from here on. I am hyped, though, from how things turned out last time.

One thing is certain, as long as we have more of this beautiful world exploration and character deepening I won't complain.

OK, OK, it's more than a little addictive, even if (frankly) I'm not sure I have any idea what's actually going on or (other than a half-dozen of the primary characters) who's who or where the story is going ... although it's obviously not going anywhere quickly, because (despite turning more than 1,600 pages at this point), I think I'm only a quarter of the way through the initial run ... and why should I assume that, after all that, the storyline will actually resolve (let alone conclude)?

Some of the digressions are intriguing, and some of the temporal skipping is entertaining, but ... even conceding I'm a geezer and, at best, an intermittent (and very much not a longstanding, hardcore) manga consumer, I find it confusing enough trying to hold onto the thread that weaves through the primary storyline.

Ultimately, sure, at least at this early stage in the game, it's difficult to deny the attraction to the worldbuilding and the characters ... and, as these things go, the more invested you become, you can't help but become more curious about what's coming, what intrigue will alter the current basic assumptions, and from which direction the next surprise or unexpected twist will arrive.

I just can't do it. It's too badly drawn, clumsy, with bad compositions. Twelve omnibuses... it seems insurmountable to me.
I'm going to stick to the anime which, and it happens rarely, seems to me to be far superior to the original version.

The walls are filled with titans- what felt like just a classic monster story ended up becoming a bit more of a thriller… which of our friends are titans …

Some backstory on Mikasa and Little Connie

The titan design is great, I had seen the muscle titan before in advertisements and thought all the titans would be like that but they’re so much better, the introduction of the monkey man one is excellent a truly chilling monster. I love the one with a huge head and normal size body.

The church refusing to explain but throwing someone else under the bus was pretty much par for the course

By far my favorite part of these three volumes is the action and the time given to the members of the 104th. Sasha backstory, Connie, Reiner, Bertholdt, Ymir and Krista. More time is given to them with titans within wall Rose a great tense background. Also within this volume is the Intro of the Beast titan and he does a great job even though he does not really do much within volume nine. However, his ability to speak is really interesting and his control of other titans is terrifying. He also plays a role in the most horrific death of the Manga.

Issues = The survey Corps plans to figure out if there any other titans within the 104th is just stupid. They gather them all together and just keep them within one large room. I just find it a little strange.

Volume 7 = The begging of the volume is great with the capture of the Female Titan. Her escape also shows her intelligence and just how blind the Survey Corps really are. The female titan escaping among the solders and killing Levi Squad is a good fight. Its downside does come from the fact Levi Squad had not been shown their full strength. This is the only fight they get within the volume, and they all die. Eren fight with the female titan shows his terrifying energy even when faced against superior foes. Levi attack was easily the best part showing off his strength. Levi Squad could have had a better time if they had gone for the legs. Remove the Female titan ability to move would have made the eyes useless. They would probably not have won; however, they probably would not have died. The volume does end with defeat with Eren showing back up as two children come running up talking about the heroes.

Volume 8 = With the volume starting with Annie, it made kind of obvious that she is the female titan. Putting it together does just make it kind of obvious that it was Annie. The fight is still great with the reveal of the titan within the wall a good reveal. Strange to think that this is where the first session of the anime ended right in the middle of the volume, but it makes for a good ending. The volume continues with a sudden turn away from the Female titan. The reveal of the wall priest and wall Rose being breached does kind of feel like it is coming out of nowhere. I do like that it makes sense later on in the manga when the lifespan of the titans is made clear and just how long the operation to steal the founder have taken.

Volume 9 = My favorite cover of the three volumes which make up this omnibus. The beast standing Eren and Mikasa is kind of terrifying made more interesting with the moon in the background. A very interesting cover since Eren does not run into the beast titan until a much later on. The bit about Sasha and Connie is the best part with them being somewhat forgettable in later volumes.

Characters = The death of Squad Levi was supposed to show two things from what I can tell. The first to show Eren the coast of his actions and the second to show the power of the Female Titan. In my opinion the first one works well. The second one however fails due to Levi Squad strength not being shown. They do say the number of kills and assist, however those numbers don't mean much. We aren't given context of what would be a normal record. They also die being just a minor part of the story. Annie Is one of the more interesting characters with her being the only member of the 104th not to join the Survey Corps. Lost Girls is a really good story and gives a good idea what she is doing before the mission outside. She also gives us a view within the MPs and two characters who would be important later on. Annie for being off alone does have a lot of emotion which shows mostly when she failed. When she fails to capture Eren, when she fails to return home to her father. Both good moments and her skill of combat allows Eren to go toe to toe with the other titans.

Mike is one of the most interesting characters with him being considered the second best right after Levi. Yet for some reason he is a Squad leader while Levi was just a captain. I am assuming this is due to Mike being within the Survey Corps much longer than Levi. A mostly silent character yet I would say he is more interesting than the members of Levi Squad.

I realize I've given 5 stars to the first three omnibus volumes and maybe you think I'm just exaggerating and skip them. That would be your problem because you'd be missing some of the best manga ever written. Reminds me a lot of the TV show LOST in it's storytelling, but it seems to have a lot more of a solid direction where it's going than the show did.

Ok this omnibus had a whole flood of new story arcs. First off, didn’t expect Annie to be the Female Titan - I lowkey thought it was going to be Mikasa.

I think Annie’s ‘father’ might also be Grisha Yeager, or maybe even a lab grown experiment of his? Not too sure honestly, but regardless I think he has some involvement with her.

I feel like my previous photosynthesis (or something of the sort) theory has been quashed after I saw Eren transform into his titan form underground, but then why did they need to get Annie underground to stop her? No clue.

And don’t even get me started on the Titan that talks and the ones in the walls. But so excited to see where this goes.

The series is back on track with more action, interesting world building, great surprises, twists and turns. I really enjoyed where the story is going. The artwork, while still not great, has also improved greatly.

A bit to long for what it is, but still a fun story. And I do like the Titan design.

Book: Attack on Titan Omnibus 3
Author: Hajime Isayama
Rating: 5 Out of 5 Stars

I think I am enjoying this more the second time around than I ever did the first time. I am now able to look and see the little clues as to what is to come. I must say that the way that everything is woven together is so brilliant and so well done. I don’t know how the author did it, other than making sure that everything was plotted and planned right from the start.

As this is the third omnibus volume, there may be mild spoilers for the first tow volumes. I am going to try to keep review as vague as possible.

This one is still set in the Female Titan arc. The Survey Corps are still trying to figure out who the Female Titan is. They are coming up with this plan to capture her and bring her in. This sense of the unknown is very clear throughout the book. There is also the very high chance that the titan is someone they know. Someone they know is hunting them down and they don’t know why. This drives them and they have no idea as to why they are being hunted. After all, they are supposed to be on the same team and now they are hurt. They don’t know why someone would do such a thing.

The fact that humans can be inside titans has been a game changer. It’s almost like they don’t know who to trust for certain. The sense of the uneasy and unknown plagues our characters. It has clearly left an impact on their actions and their next steps. Not only that but society has turned against them. No one has any faith in them and this has also left an impact. Those who they have vowed to project are now against them. they have no where to turn.

I like how the theme of isolation plays into the story. We have a world that is already hidden behind the walls and now they are turning on each other. No one knows where to look or who to look to. Everyone is eyeing each other and wondering who is going to turn next. It’s uneasy and makes for a very rough and difficult time. It’s also a good way to break people. Think about it. If you have a society that has turned from each other, it is very easy to knock them down.

Overall, I am very happy to be back in this world again. I love seeing how everything comes together.

Volume 7: Eren fights the female Titan. Because of this, Eren is forced to go to the Military Police. That’s mostly it in this volume. Still really good though.

Well this volume is full of action and speculation, and it's left me feeling murderous. Sometimes someone just needs to die a slow and painful death, and when that doesn't happen, emotions tend to run high. It's also possible that I'm hangry, but either way, I have unresolved issues, so it's on to Volume 8. Hopefully this particular character gets what they deserve, and soon.

Volume 8: The truth behind the female Titan is revealed! And so, Eren fights her again! This volume marks the end of the first season in the anime.

This vol. is where season 1 of anime ended, so I didn't expect to be surprised, because I've seen first season, but boy was I wrong! This contained one chapter after the anime ended, and it was just so fucking mind-blowing. I don't know why didn't they make another episode with this last chapter (but I guess that I'm grateful that they didn't, because what a cliffhanger would that be!).

Volume 9: And now we move into the second season of the anime! A strange-looking Titan that can talk (!!) kills the leader of a group of Survey Corps members. Then plans start being made, and Connie finds his hometown destroyed. A surprising volume indeed.

I am shooketh!! So many things happened in this volume and there was so many plot twists. I loved how this volume spent time giving a lot of the side characters backstories, especially Sasha. The beast titan was low-key really freaky (and I googled the beast titan just to double check that that was what it was called and I spoiled part of the story for myself...).

I mean, apart from the female titan and the beast titan showing up and the fact that the walls themselves are made up of titans I don't suppose anything particularly interesting happens. I've known all along that people can turn into titans so that wasn't too surprising, the difficulty is with identifying who they are when the characters come and go so quickly. They literally die like flies. The beast titan being able to talk and hence having some intellect isa cool concept which I'm not sure why he possesses. Also not sure as to whether it's an animal and a person changed into a titan. Otherwise it's just Eren changing into a titan every now and then and trying to save as many lives as possible.

Titans attacking titans is another cool twist I was not expecting. I have yet to determine the titans' true intentions which is the whole point of the series and what makes the suspense so real. It's crazy to me how easily the female titan was able to take on Eren, even in his titan form, after also destroying his entire squad. I'm not quite sure how Eren is not dead yet. It's becoming slightly repetitive what with so many new characters being introduced and others with some decent form of character development being killed off. I suppose the title of the series still holds true to its nature.

Attack on Titan is an anime that has a lot of layers and when you get to a layer that seems to be rotten you want to throw it away and with this Omnibus it shows, it has 3 manga's in it so it is just showing the showdown with Annie and what happened with her and the female titan and I honestly believe they could have done so much more with her and I know she was kind of a beginner fight on how Eren would act with the remainder of the titans but Annie was my least favorite out of them all and I know that they had that one obligatory female titan just to please the fan boys but please let the rest of her story actutally count for something other than for fan service.

tbh if the last volume wasn’t in this omnibus edition this would’ve been three stars. i fear the female titan arc is my least favourite out of the entire series. however. the beast titan is just so terrifying and the build up of the entire story at the castle is just SO exciting and i can’t wait to read more. i also remember how terrifying it was to discover the beast titan could talk. i wouldn’t want to be in mike’s shoes genuinely.

Im still in parts I watched on the anime years ago, but damn, I forgot how amazing AOT is. The mystery, the art, the characters, everything is top notch. This manga is one of the best. Regarding what happened, my guess is that the Titans are people from the surrounding villages since the wall wasn't breached. The Beast Titan probably turned them somehow.

Here is when things really start to get interesting.
The drawings are improving at an admirable rate, with some battle scenes looking absolutely baffling.
The storyline is still great as always, and it only gets better after this.
The beast titan’s design looks a bit weird, though. The legs are too long making it look “too human”. Hope that gets fixed in later volumes.
