My Husband the Enemy

Rate this book
My father was gunned down in front of his company's headquarters. He survived long enough to extract a promise from Mac Sutton...to protect me by marrying me.  My father had basically handed off his partnership to the man, yet I’m still shocked that his final wish was to hand me off as well.

Though I adored my father and want to be a dutiful daughter, marriage to a hard-hearted bastard like Mac Sutton seems too much of a sacrifice.

Mac doesn't want this marriage any more than I do, yet he's hell-bent on keeping his promise. As if he owed my father. I’m beyond suspicious of his motives, but he’s using guilt to make me comply, reminding me that it was my father's deathbed request.

Of course, getting married will destroy my nice comfortable relationship with the man I've been dating. My boyfriend doesn't stir any passion in me, which is exactly the way I like it. My mother killed herself because of passion. And I am my mother's child. Not only do I look like her, but I have her impulsive nature. I'm determined to live my life differently. I'm not about to let passion overrule my common sense.

There are no triggers in this book. Minor spanking & open door, steamy sex scenes.

***minor plot spoilers in this review****

I enjoyed this book a lot and recommend it if you like books with a super sexy, j/p (jealous/possessive), alpha H (hero). Oh yeah, Mr. Alpha is here.

This guy is a dominant guy with a dirty mouth and used to women falling at his feet but the h (heroine) doesn't do that, lol. He has to force her to marry him and then she resists him almost every step of the way. At one point, she even runs from him. I loved that part! LOVED it! There's just something about a hot guy having to chase his woman down that is really fun and exciting to read in romances. The h was strong and not a doormat. She was also sweet, naive and a bit quirky. I loved her! I have to admit I pretty much love all Ms. Cross's H's and h's. I love how the h's are oblivious of the effect they have on the H.

Here's a brief excerpt from the scene where the H tracked the h down after she ran from him. (She was waitressing at a strip club.)
Excerpt :

" “Did you strip for your sleazy boss?”

I wondered how long that question had been percolating in his brain. “I’m going to assume you mean for the club and not for him privately,” I said. “I considered it. It would have meant more money. They’d picked out a costume for me. I just couldn’t bring myself to do it.”

He was watching me carefully, weighing everything I told him for the truth.

I fiddled absently with my wedding band. “And I knew you’d be pissed if I did it.”

“Pissed? Now there’s a fucking understatement.” "

The one-liners that Ms. Cross comes up with are seriously genius. I lol and yet get a little hot at the same time. I loved the jealousy that was communicated so effortlessly.

A few things to note - My Husband the Enemy is written in first person with POV's from the H (hero) & h (heroine). The writing flowed well and was more detailed than in previous books I've read by this author but it still wasn't fully fleshed out. Whenever I read a book written by Ms. Cross, I find myself wanting more. I'm never bored, always devour it and I simply never want it to end. This book has a great epilogue which I certainly appreciated but sadly, no grovel. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed this a lot, do recommend it and will reread it.

This book surprised me. I wasn’t expecting it to be this good.
The characters and the writing was the best.
Loved the straightforward dialogues and hero’s crazy jealousy. I also loved the nice, delicate touch of heroine’s Wiccan affinity in the book.
What I didn’t love was the two screwups of hero and the reaction of heroine to it. She was too forgivable and he didn’t even ask for forgiveness. When he broke her trust the first time she didn’t even cry or became emotional .. I found that almost impossible given the circumstances.
Still I’ll definitely read more from this author (you’re now in my radar, lady!😉).
Recommended and absolutely safe.

I really enjoyed this book, written along the same lines as My Husband the Stranger. If you enjoyed that one, I highly recommend this one, too. They are both standaone stories featuring yummy alpha heroes.

Hot short story

Loved the H Mac and I have no idea why! He could be a jerk but I really liked him. The H annoyed me at first but she grew on me. The mystery wasn't all that great and it fizzled out at the end. It was pretty steamy in a couple of places too. It's safe but there is a long separation and they were both faithful. I don't want to spoil anything else but I really thought the H was super hot. And he really loved his woman.

Another great book by this author. I'm seeing a formula: the h is a feisty and smart virgin, and the H is a bossy uncommunicative alphahole. While I loved the romance there were a few moments where I rolled my eyes. The h who runs away all the time, the H who stays silent for no good reason. If it weren't for the quick pacing of the story, I might've given up. Near the end Mac does something that seems so thoughtless and unnecessary and felt like the authors way of dragging out the angst and the plot (I deducted 1/2 a star for that). But the ending was so sweet and satisfying, that I forgave him.

I have some mixed emotions about this one. While I loved the alpha a-holery of this hero, he made a decision at the end that really bothered me. It did end with a happy ever after, but there wasn’t enough time after his actions for me to get a chance to work through it and forgive him. There were also a lot of times when his actions didn’t always fit with his thoughts or vice versa. These were just short moments that left me a little disappointed but that affected my overall enjoyment of the book. The heroine was strong enough to stand up to him until that last incident when I thought she should have reamed him out.

However, when I reflect on the book as a whole, I’m left content and pretty happy with it all. Definitely enough to check out other books by this author.

The hero’s decision that bothered me:

My new fave author!!!

This is the second book I've read from this author and I am loving her!!! Like the previous book, this one also has a hot alpha male. Mac promised Serena's father he would marry her and keep her safe as Serena's father last dying in the hospital from a fatal bullet wound.

I loved this story! I can't wait to read more!!!

Not enough info for me

The hero went away on assignment for a year and heroine didn’t know where he was or what he was doing when he came back he just told her a little about the job and that he left her a note and that was it. What? Did he sleep with someone else while undercover? His new tattoos? Why wasn’t that a question? I hate unanswered questions and heroines who don’t ask the questions.

Mac was there to protect Serena when her father was shot. The arrangement however include a marriage. It went as I expected until Serena found the semi truth and decided to take matter in her own hand. I was rooting for her to be independant. There's not much chemistry between Serena and Mac. She spent little time with Tom and Owen and either one of them suited her best.

This is the 3rd book I’m reading by this author. I like her writing although would love longer/more detailed epilogues!

Also, I noticed that all 3 books have redhead heroines and seems like another by the cover has the heroine as a redhead too.. minor thing but it would be nice to see a change.

DNF at 60%

“And how soon can we get a divorce?” He did not respond, but it was clear by the muscle jumping in his jaw that he’d heard me. “An annulment, I mean, since this is just a marriage of convenience,”
“Who the hell is this marriage convenient for?”

I don't know what went wrong with this book because I was so invested in the story until I wasn't.

I love a forced marriage story. I would read this trope non-stop and won't feel the least bored.
But seriously, this story clicked all my fuck no buttons.

The hero was a selfish, disrespectful jerk who didn't honor the h's wishes, sorrow, feelings or even normal choices.

The heroine was a real brat who mind you got punished with a belt to her ass because she was caught up snooping in her husband's office but what was more shocking was that she loved the beating and nearly orgasmed.

Kill. Me. Now

I hate to one star a book because it feels sad but I'm so sorry Ms. Emery Cross, no offence but the H/h got on my nerves.

Good but could improve

This was a good story but there were chunks is time that the hero would disappear and like months near the end . He didn’t call and just showed back up like 7 months later . I also had trouble telling at different stages of the book if he even cared about the heroine . There was no connection until the end . I could always tell that she cared about him but just not the other way around . Not sure why .

New author to me and I really enjoyed this. Hot alpha H, damsel in distress h. Sign me right up! BUT... It had some issues.

A ton of issues could have been avoided if the H had just explained to the h what the hell was going on sooner. She had no idea he was a cop, that her dad was "dirty" (at least initially), or really ANYTHING. It was a little shallow. All of that could have been forgiven and then the ending...

**Spoilers**
What the hell??? She doesn't tell him she's pregnant but he JUST LEAVES HER FOR A YEAR with no communication with him and she has to have the baby all by herself. Literally just her and a paid bodyguard that she called at the very last minute. It was fucking sad and I almost thought this author was going to commit the cardinal sin and kill off a main character at the end. But no, he just waltzes back into her life like nothing saying he was on another undercover job and SHE JUST LETS HIM and then she hesitates telling him she had a baby BECAUSE HE HAD NO IDEA. What kind of reality is this??? I cannot believe that the FBI wouldn't give him at the very least a phone call with her to say he's going on another mission and then he'll be done. He leaves a HIDDEN note that says something like "Be good". Like what? How was she supposed to find that and know that he'd be back?? And then there was literally no grovel once he roles back in with no care in the world. Yeah, lost a star for this clusterfuck ending.

Better than the other one(My husband the stranger). Both characters had more depth and actual interaction between then, so I wasn't actively rooting against them ending up together this time.

Overall it's short, not terrible not amazing. More of 99 cent read than $3.

DNF, Ridiculous I don’t even know why I decided to read it, a word of advice when you don’t know what you’re in the mood to read next and can’t decide what book to start, DO NOT pick up just anything thinking it will be a fun and light way to pass the time inbetween books.

Cute short read

This book was what I would consider an okay read if you are looking for a lighter fluffier story. No real depth and not a lot of details & depth. If you’re looking for a cute short read pick it up.

A good one

This story of an arranged marriage has some twists and turns connected with why it was desired by her father and why the groom agreed. It was a rocky path to their HEA, but lucky for you, it a fun read to get to it.

I hate writing reviews

So here's mine. Read the publisher's description. I liked this book. If you like romance fiction with strong alpha males and females that are just as strong and need a strong man to show how much they love them., read this book.
