When a former mermaid turns up dead, Eleri and Donovan are stuck with a case they never wanted, but can’t shake… Eleri—a former mermaid herself—should have been recused from the case. That’s her friend on the autopsy table and putting her in charge of the investigation violates more rules than she can count. But her Special Agent in Charge won’t let her off the case, making her wonder if there’s more to Westerfield’s demands than meets the eye.
He won’t let Donovan out of the case either. The mysterious package from a brother Donovan didn’t know he had contains as much threat as it does information. The lobomau are more organized and further-reaching than anyone thought, and Donovan now has a personal connection.
The team is stuck on a research vessel with a killer hot on their trail… but Eleri’s skills are glitchy at best, and Donovan can’t swim. Can they keep the remaining crew members—and themselves—alive or will the killer turn out to be the one they least suspected?
This next installment in the NightShade Forensic Files brings more X-Files-like mystery to the series! Be prepared for an up-all-night thrill ride and grab Dead Tide now.
Eleri learning how to use her additional inhuman skills is has become unbelievable. She is supposed to be this smart woman who has generations of witches running through her veins and the best she can come up with is to run away. That's not the type of person she is supposed to be and she left her friends to fiend for themselves. Very poor. I think Noah was the smartest one turning down the offer to join Nightshade. And when is Westerfield going to help his agents more? Oh, almost forgot, stop with the cliff hangers. They don't encourage true fans to buy your books. It's the story and how well it is written. Very nice that GJ is finally growing up. Not great that she doesn't see her true power.
Eleri, Donovan & GJ are given an assignment, which they request be given to someone else, but Westerfield will not take no for an answer. They relocate to Florida following the death of one of Eleri's friends, Allison. Her wife, Hannah has requested help from the FBI, believing her death to be suspicious. A newcomer based in Miami, makes up the FBI team of four. Allison was part of a marine research group, using oysters from four locations to investigate pollution. One of the four batches of oysters has tested positive for some unusual pollutants - cocaine & heroin. Checking barnacles from the same original location confirms the traces of the Class A drugs. A video of Allison's death underwater is found and it appears that her official cause of death - Accidental : Shark Atack is more complicated and deliberate than the death certificate implies. The video shows someone stabbing her, the blood in the water attracting the sharks who kill her. Upon checking her diving vest, they find puncture marks, corresponding to the wounds displayed on screen. GJ asks her fellow agents to review the video again , paying particular attention to the attack. The assassin appears to stab her, but is three feet away when he makes the stabbing motion with a knife and she starts to bleed. Another unusual occurrence for the Nightshade team. That is just the start to another superb book by a very clever writer who hears the beat of a different drum and follows it to a place where weird is the norm and certain humans have some very inhumane talents. The scenarios and skill sets in this book are obviously fictitious, but they do leave wondering if.......
This was a frustrating read in the series. Felt like the author had lost her steam over the last few books but decided to push on making more books. There are some frustrating storyline and character plot inconsistencies which spoil the flow of the series. First blaring mistake is Eleri debating whether to tell Avery about her witch ancestors - ummm... You fought about that a few books back when he demanded an answer to that exact same topic ? Also I understand we need a progression of Eleri and her witch magic skills however in new Orleans she and grandmere admitted to not teaching her anything, in Curie she had none of her usual foresight skill and was scared her skills had died with Emmaline put to rest/grandmere passing and then this new case starts a day later and she suddenly has a grimore, she is practising spells and she channels full blown dark magic witch skills? Did not progress as smoothly or believably as the previous /earlier books had. Really hoping the rest of the series picks up to the standard it was before

What a grand story in Dead Tide by A.J. Scudiere. This is book eighth of the The NightShade Forensic Files series. A new and interesting, and extremely unique story, with Eleri and Donovan, on cases they aren't supposed to be one. Things aren't what they seem, but they do get personal, very personal. A former mermaid (yes, mermaid) is dead and the case runs from there, something they think could be unsolvable. This author brings the story to life. This story was very unpredictable. This book captures the reader's attention at chapter 1. The author's technique of raw, magnetic characters and great plotlines is a gift. A reader can get lost in the story. A gripping and incredible storyline. Both thrilling and intriguing, all the way to the end. Dead Tide is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book and give my honest and unbiased review. Amy's Bookshelf Reviews recommends that anyone who reads this book, to also write a review. I hope to read more books by this author.
The book has an interesting story to go along with the already interesting characters we know from the world of Nightshade. Having a new character introduced and a younger one begin the maturation process are welcome additions. I think the best part of this book was not knowing who should be trusted and who should not - that seems to go not only for other people, but for our favorite agents' intuition. If I write much more I will start to give away plot and I do not want to do that. If you have not read the series, start at the beginning. The book should not have taken as long to read as it did - I usually read two books simultaneously. It is fast-paced and action packed.
I am enjoying the character development in the series. I am waiting to see more of Christina and Walter, not to mention what GJ can truly do. Also, I expect to see Noah again, maybe as part of Nightshade.
I loved that the team was back together but missed Walter. This was an interesting story about drug smuggling and an evil corporation. Somehow it didn’t really feel resolved, though. The bad guys were dealt a heavy blow but I feel that in the scheme of things Eleri and her team will be dealing with Miranda corporation and their connected “gangs” again. Looking forward to learning more about Donovan’s new found family and Eleri’s new found powers.
I really enjoyed reading this book! It left me on the edge of my seat! Too many close calls and I'm worried about Eleri! I liked Noah and I hope this isn't the last we hear from him! I feel everyone who reads this book will enjoy it! I definitely recommend this book to everyone! I lot of mystery, drama, and action!
The story continues! I love how the adventure transitions seamlessly from book to book from Vol 1 onward. Each story is fascinating and I loved this one too! These characters are all smart in different ways but have human flaws too. They are so relatable. The mysteries they have to solve are very interesting too! Please keep them going!
There are lots of creatures under the sea and criminal activity too. Eleri's friend has been killed in an attack that seems impossible but the FBI agents of the Nightshade Division are up to the task of finding the killer. Justice may be harder to get and the criminal activity they find even harder to stop but this is another successful thriller from AJ Scudiere.
This is Book 8 and I'd advise starting with #1. I've totally enjoyed each of these books. The characters are engaging and the stories are very well told.
I did enjoy aspects of this, such as the continuing elements of Donovan's back story and thr expansion of GJ's character, but found it a little drawn out and a little repetitive in the language used. This unfortunately made this a harder read than previous books in the serirs.
Love this serie, got just the right mix of horror, supernatural, thriller and cop/FBI action that makes a good installment, will defently read the next....and the next....you catch my drift 😃
Appropriate for Mature teen - adult audiences No sex Some harsh language Some violence, suspense, and plenty of action X-Files weirdness
The FBI's secret Nightshade Division agents Eleri, Donovan, and GJ, are called upon to investigate the shark attack death one of Eleri's friends, a scientist studying pollution in the waters near Florida. Sharks don't attack without reason, and what's more, stab wounds on the victim suggest this was murder. However, clear evidence shows there was no one nearby to have inflicted the wounds, which is why the special talents of Nightshade's recruits are required as they work alongside regular FBI agents and some of the victim's close friends.
Investigating alongside "normal" people is always a challenge for our characters since the general population really shouldn't know about their abilities. Then again, who's normal?
Highly recommended, but in my opinion all or most of the rest of the series should be read to fully appreciate the well-developed characters of the Nightshade team. I look forward to the next book. 5 stars. Absolutely.
Dead Tide was another fantastic book in the NightShade Forensic Files series. It is a joy to experience the continued development of some of these main characters. It almost seems as though every time I believe I have them figured out, they develop a new quirk or a better understanding of themselves.
The pace of the story was frenetic. I just could not put it down. The one part that bothered me was how freely one of the characters gave information out to the perpetrators in the story. Throughout all of the stories, including this one, it is mentioned how much trouble some of the agents would be in if they let more people in on the powers they have, yet this agent had no aversion to telling everything. Perhaps there will be repercussions in a future story?
Anyway, I would recommend this story to all fans of Scudiere as well as all fans of action/ thriller stories with a strong forensics backing. They will certainly enjoy it.
”Dead Tide” may well have been labeled ”Discovery of Whiches” (apologies to Deborah Harkness for a very bad pun). A lot of the story is concerned to which team, Nightshade or opponents the new characters belong. GJ returns with her analytical skills and helped guide Nightshade in their quest for justice. Also, she has cemented her place on the team with her skill using her 18 shot semi-automatic. The only way she could improve her performance would be to have silver bullets. If you have not yet read ”Dead Tide” and you haven't seen the ”Queen’s Staircase” on Nassau, I suggest you scare up a picture to help you better appreciate one of the incidents in the book.
I have read all the Nightshade Forensic Files books. This one was fantastic. Eleri and Donovan are sent to Florida by their boss to find out what happen to a diver. Eleri knows the people and should be taken off the case, Donovan hates the water and should be taken off the case. So why are they there? G J is on the team using her analogical skills. They also introduce Noah who has a hidden talent. Donovan is distracted by the knowledge of his brother and mother. -looking forward to learning more. Eleri is embracing the knowledge Her Grand mere gave her. This book is full and starts fast and does not stop. It takes them all to solve the case and take down the bad guys that have hidden talents of their own. I was happy to read this advance reader copy!
Dead Tide is the latest in A.J. Scudiere’s exciting NightShade series. In this volume, Eleri, Donovan, and GJ are dispatched to Miami to investigate the death of marine biologist Allison Caldeira. At first glance it appears that Allison was killed by sharks: her wife, Hannah, however, is convinced Allison was murdered. In order to determine what really happened, the team traces Allison’s path of research, venturing out on the ocean and to the Bahamas. Along the way they uncover illegal activities – are these related to Allison’s death? New characters are introduced, and new situations are presented. This IS a NightShade case, so expect the unexpected and the unusual. Entertaining and educational – go read this book!
What a suspenseful read! We see Eleri, Donovon, and GJ is this issue. I really missed Walter; hope she is coming back. Eleri and Donovon have so much emotional trauma in this novel that all you can do is pray that they get their heads back in the game before something terrible happens. GJ does some growing up which I really hoped would happen, or she was going to put others in danger. AJ only continues to develop this series; the characters grow and change. Some of the changes are not my favorite but I want them to grow and develop. I highly recommend this author and this novel. I will continue to follow this author. I received this novel from Griffyn Ink. This is my true and honest review.
This is my last book until the next one comes out and I’m gonna go crazy!!! El is gone after this case! They fought like hell in this book and won, but at what cost? Donavon has a brother, GJ has grown a pair and Noah refuses to join them. There’s sea creatures, wolves in gangs and drug runners killing Ocean researchers. What a ride. And to leave me hanging saying Fisher is missing along with Pines? Argggg
I've enjoyed all of the Night Shade books so far, but this one may be my favorite. Eleri is learning more and more about her considerable powers, and she and Donovan are up against creatures with powers they'd not ever encountered before. There's always a cliffhanger at the end, and this one has a doozy! I can't wait for the next book in this series!
What a mind A.J. .must have to conceive such incredible stories. A little slow in the beginning, but once it took off, it flew. Excellent, excellent action and storyline. Write faster is all I'll say.
Great great book. I love this series. I love the characters they are so strong and I feel myself cheering for them to pull through for more adventurous tales. Can't wait for the next book in this truly addicting series.
What a compelling read. I’m addicted to this series. I loved the story and the characters Donovan, GJ, Eleri and Noah are the best. Highly recommend this book.
