Sarah K. L. Wilson is a USA Today Bestselling author who writes fantasy stories featuring practical heroes & heroines in the most impractical circumstances. She loves writing because it is the only way to make a living and give back to the world when your primary skill is an overactive imagination and a tendency toward violent daydreams. What an end to this season! So much happens in this short story and yet so much is revealed, especially at the end? What was that? You can't give us new information like that! Ah I need to know what happens next!
I am really enjoying Sersha and Kazmerev's story. They have so much love and passion, they care and are very protective of each other which is really sweet. I am still confused with some of the titles and what exactly each person does but I am sure it will be made clear as this series goes on.
Really enjoyed the first season and I am eager to read more!
Received a copy from the author herself for an honest review and this does not affect my review or rating of the book thank you!
I loved season one of Wilson's latest series! The worldbuilding was delicious and the characters epically 3D. But let's face it--Judicus won out as my fav. I love his edgy, adorable self.
Excited to see what is coming next! (though can someone please give these guys a holiday? I think they need to breathe, lol).
So episode 5 brings us to the end of season one of this very exciting series which we are receiving in instalments. Aunt Danna has been killed, Judicus, Sersha and Gundt have been attacked by stone monsters and Judicus took these down, fleeing for their lives yet again they are accosted by three phoenix riders and their phoenixes and given a message. A Captain Rackham wanted to see them immediately on his boat and as they approach Judicus and Gundt know exactly who this Captain is and wonder why they have been summoned. In the meantime Sersha is still hoping to save her cousin Mally, the ai'sletta, who now has no one but her in the world, and though Mally was always mean and petty to her even Judicus and Gundt promised to help take her out of the clutches of Lady Lighthand. However this is easier said than done, as this Lady has rogues doing her bidding as well as stryxex who are bent on killing forever all phoenixes. These stryxex are the negative of the phoenix, whilst one is of the light, the other is of the dark, one tries to be righteous whilst the other is pure evil and malevolent and strikes real fear in Sersha as she cannot imagine her life without her Kazmerev in it. Every time he dies she feels bereft and only feels complete when he is by her side. This episode leaves us at quite a precarious point in time for our group of heroes and those traveling with them and I am really looking forward to the start of season 2 to further follow Sersha and her adventures as part of Judicus coterie.
Well I didn’t see that coming at the end of season one! As we continue following Sershe, Kazmerev , Judicas and Gundt, they just never seem to catch a break and yet again walk into a trap! Highly entertaining, exciting, gripping and such a rush that when this episode finished I was just sat with my mouth wide open scrabbling to find more pages!! I’m a little in shock and eager to read the next season and hope luck is more on their side!
We got given a flock of cool information about the phoenixes and their origins. There were some heartfelt moments between Sersha and her loveable phoenix, Kazmerev. We met mysterious new friends, and deadly new enemies. And Judicus was awake for most of it!!! I'm so proud of him!!!
But then it goes and leaves me on a damn cliffhanger >:( If I didn't already have season 2 ready, I'd be mad.
Evil (but also kinda hopeful?) ending, aside, this has been a very enjoyable series. After all, it's hard to go wrong with cool fiery, ridable phoenixes right? It would have been nice to see a bit more worldbuilding, and further detail into the lore behind all the magic that goes on here. For example, there was an elf in the beginning of episode 1, but then no mention of elves ever again? Maybe they'll feature in the 2nd or 3rd season, I'm prepared to give it that chance. And the narrator does a great job with the audiobooks!
Definitely looking forward to the future adventures of Sersha and Kazmerev, and I recommend this series to any other fan of light-hearted fantasy (with it's fair share of darkish violence, at times), and cool fiery ridable phoenixes! Also recommended to those looking for quick reads between projects!
What a marvellous end to the first season. This book is non-stop action from beginning to end. After a sudden meeting with other flame riders, Sersha and Judicus (and of course Kazmerev) find themselves back on a ship after being ordered to meet a captain, whose name meant something to Judicus. After this they were sent on a mission, which seemed to correlate with their own mission. When arriving at their destination they find themselves in a precarious position with Stryxexs and other enemies. The ending to the book is very surprising and leaves the reader anxiously awaiting the next season.
Okay, first of all, Sarah K.L. Wilson, HOW DARE YOU?
You can’t just drop all these fantastic reveals and ghost us like this.
Also, if you could email be season two, that’d be great. Pretty please? No? Well, that was worth a shot.
Okay, so Sersha is growing into her own as a Phoenix Rider, but the stakes are ramping up to heart-pounding levels. Now, it’s not just Mally who will suffer if they fail, but ALL the Phoenixes. And the deaths... holy crap. I didn’t necessarily *like* the people who bit it, but I am shook.
Fingers crossed my favorites are kept safe by plot armor.
Let me tell you right now that Sarah’s masterful use of words in describing the characters, the terrain, and all the action taking place is awesome! You can see and feel the frustration that Sersha goes through over and over because she does not have a voice. You feel the love between her and Kazmerev growing deeply. And her friendship with Judicus continues to grow, but could there be more going on with these two than just friendship? Meeting the Grand Hadri brings lots of surprises into the story, and speaking of surprises - just wait until you read the last few pages and find out what Mally does! WOW!!!
I like the plot, but parts of it seem a bit unbelievably that they are all still alive. Also like when do these people sleep?!
I really like the side characters. I loved the main FMC in the first book, but her blind loyalty to her cousin and aunt was so frustrating, they acted horribly to her, and left her to die multiple times. Also her doubting the ones that have saved her multiple times was super annoying too. She’s a bit all over the place with her emotions.
I’m gonna give the next season a try, and see if the FMC gets a bit more growth.
Narrator does a great job.
Content for first five book: no swearing, no spice
A fitting end to the first season of the serial with all the adventure and action of the earlier installments. I had been hoping that the story threads would be tied up at least loosely for the end of the season before being opened up again in season two, but instead the season ends much the same as the other insallments - right when it's really getting interesting. Typically for a serial the story moves too fast to have time for things like deep character development or scene setting but it's still a fabulous fast read.
Sersha and Judicus continue to be stalwart champions of righteousness. However, the ruling authorities in their world definitely seem to be on the other side of that coin. Corruption and disdain seem to abound. Gundt makes headway into becoming one of Sersha's trusted few. This season ends poorly and in a cliffhanger.
Action-packed. Easy-to-read. Great world building. Haunting. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable. Wonderful characters.
I received a review copy of this book from a third party. This is my honest review.
Things seem out of control for Sersha, Judicus and even Gundt, as more Fire Riders are added to the mix. Everyone seems to have their own agenda and that agenda is at odds with the wishes of our heroes. It's inconvenient that phoenixes die in the morning light, only to be reborn as the sun goes down, making daytime dangerous. After days (weeks?) of searching, the group finds Mally again and somehow, whether intentionally or not, she manages to turn the tables on the invaders...and...on to season two!
Sersha and Kazmerev are back and what an episode. I loved the action and surprises and had to devour it all at once to see what trouble they would get into this time and how they would solve it and win in the end. A thrilling chapter and made me sad to see it end. Lots of characters to keep me guessing and trying to figure out who is on Sersha's side. Need the next season to see what will happen next.
Thank for writing this series of books and short stories (serials). I have enjoyed each character and how spot on their development or characterizations are portrayed. I especially enjoyed Sersha , the new flamethrower and look forward to her improvement as she learns from a senior flamethrower named Gundt. I look forward to more stories involving Judicus the role worker.
End of season 1 - but not really an end, not even close to solving anything and ending on a big cliffhanger. This makes me a bit sad. Other than that, another action packed episode which makes me root for Judicus even further while sersha's insecurity 'will kasmerev come back? What would i be without him' gets old.
Wow, what an ending to season one. I cannot wait for season two cos I am desperate to find out what happens next. This series of books is this authors best work yet in my opinion anyway. Highly recommended.
Things are certainly coming to a head! My biggest issue is that everything feels so rushed, action action action! In my opinion, the story would be better with time to expand on everything. Definitely an epic ending to this first season, we'll see where the next one goes!
Wonderful finish to the first season. Gripping story. Personally I keep expecting Sersha to start speaking any moment. Still an exciting magical storyline. Love the characters and the rapport of the Riders and their Phoenixes. Great series Sarah.
Awesome story which gets better with each book. A big fight between all the good guys and the be guys. The Phoenix are fighting for their lives and their owners lives. Not sure how to word that connection between the human and the Phoenix.
Sarah K. L. Wilson has written another fantastic series. It wad filled with all kinds of magic and dragons, good and evil. Can't wait for the next "season" of this story to come out: Phoenix Heart: Season 2.
What a powerhouse of a cliffhanger to end the first season!! Such a great series. I can't wait to see what happens next!! Can't recommend this series highly enough!!
Wonderful ending to the first season. I still think that Judicus and Sersha are long overdue to for a nice long break but do love reading out their almost non stop adventures.
What a good way to end the first series! I do really enjoy these books and love how short each one is. Even though the whole thing is one story it makes is much easier to read in my opinion.
wow. if you are currently reading this DM me. The answer to my friend challenge is "toad", but also read that series too lol. Anyway, I need to know how you are coping, because this series still lives rent free in my head.... It's rare for me to remember specifics about many books I read, because my memory sucks and I tend to read a lot (eg i read about 250 books last year), but I seriously remember moments from every. single. one. of these episodes. I'm serious when I say each book will build you up and crush you emotionally every time! :D so if that's your thing haha jump on the crazy train to HEA.
Meh. Too many characters to keep up with now, and they're all related to each other somehow. And then the main characters are captured AGAIN and shit just keeps getting worse. I just don't care.
