Tenebra City #1

Quiver & Quill

Rate this book
Welcome to Eventide Falls University… where the only thing stranger than its monstrous student body population is the fact that its mascot is an emu…

You are an ambitious graduate student who ventures to the quaint town of Eventide Falls to pursue your Master’s degree at its eponymously-named university. Desiring to open your horizons, you’ve chosen EFU not only for its celebrated liberal arts programs, but for its monstrous student body.

Literally.

Surrounded by the likes of vampires and orcs and minotaurs and fairies, you, a human, stick out like a sore thumb, but are excited for the adventure that awaits. All you need to do to continue to enjoy your colorful new life is keep your GPA above a certain average to maintain your full-ride scholarship.

Unfortunately, a certain half-moth-half-fae professor with silvery wings and expressive antennae seems hell-bent on coming between you and your perfect grades. Proper, prim, and poised, the arrogant man may be the most infuriating person you’ve ever met.

Greek mythology isn’t quite your forte, but you’re determined to come out on top and ace his class. You always did like a good challenge — especially if it meant you could give Professor Gideon M. Dulcis a run for his money.

If only there wasn’t something about his smoldering red eyes that makes your heart quiver with forbidden desire.

You can only hope you didn’t just open Pandora’s Box.

Quiver & Quill is an immersive enemies-to-lovers monster romance told in second-person POV. It contains a deliciously brooding mothman professor, lots of spice, and bountiful allusions to Greek mythology that all culminate in a sweet Happily Ever After.

After finishing this I decided that:

- I need my own Gideon (or a mothman I'm not picky)
- More books need pegging
- I'm gonna try out Earl Grey tea for the first time
- Manifesting until I have my mothman wish might come true
- If I ever see the grandma in the streets, it's LEFT RIGHT GOOD NIGHT
- I need to try out scones
- I will have my own monster hubby (hopefully)
- White haired men are my jam

Oh yeah I'm supposed to review. Umm.

This book changed my view on second pov (HOLD ON DON'T RUN YET) and I thought I would hate it but nope! I ended up loving it because it became personal and fun for me while I was reading. Gideon was one of the stuffiest monsters I've ever met in the beginning, but aww he turns out to be so sweet (still stuffy but he's cute) to the MC.

Can we talk about his coremata? Can we?? There's four of them-

Also his peen?? Ombre to violet peen? Knobs? Feathered head? Fancy peen? Pearlescent cum? Am I ranting? Yes. In a good way? Duh. I had so many thoughts about it that I didn't want to spam the thread we have for the book so here it is.

Anyways I would definitely recommend this to anyone and this became one of my favourites this year!

I'm a monster lover and a hoe for Mothman any day of the week.

And Professor, sorry, Doctor Gideon M. Dulcis just goes above and beyond. He started as the posh prick, who looks down at you but gets under your skin, and slowly peeled off layers as the story goes on.

And you know what? Second-person POV rocks! It is the Kristen Stewart of writing styles, and we need to collectively apologise for all the hate we gave it for being used in y/n fanfiction. Maybe I do want to imagine that a hot Mothman professor is talking to me and whispering my name. And A. M. Kore knew that even before I did, for which I am eternally grateful.

This was super unique in that it was 2nd POV. I haven't read that POV since...well, the Thanksgiving leftovers polyamorous romance from last year...but before THAT I hadn't read it since I was a wee teenager enjoying fanfiction on Quizilla.

Took me a few chapters to fully get into it, but then I was all for it. My only complaint was that it went on a little bit long...but I feel maybe that was because of the POV and my only previous experience with it being shorter reads. Just felt a little like they could have wrapped it up a couple chapters sooner.

That said, enjoyable and entertaining. Fun professor/student stuff and the tongue situation was...appreciated.

I don’t know how I feel about this one

I found it strange the way it is written, however it wasn’t completely off putting. The story is very much romance without any of the world ending doom is coming plots that usually accompany these sorts of book. I kept waiting for some big calamity to happen. The smut got a bit repetitive after a while.
Not awful, enjoyable little yarn.

I stumbled upon a recommendation for this book after finishing another with a(n, in hindsight, lackluster) similar love interest… I was pulled in by the nice cover, then hooked from the summary alone. I adore this book and the world its author is creating—more dreamy demon daddies, please! 🖤

I originally read this via Kindle Unlimited, but went back and purchased a copy just to show some author appreciation. I want more readers to discover her works ASAP! 👑✨🙌

Thoroughly enjoyed this one and totally fell in love with Gideon. 🥺💖 he honestly had me squealing at times in a way I haven't in a long time for a romance hero. I was already a member of the Pro Moth Lovers committee but after this book you best believe I'm renewing that membership every year for the rest of my life.

Also, you'd think reading in the 2nd person pov would be weird but it really isn't. A.M. Kore is an excellent writer and writes in that pov totally seamlessly to the point where you don't even realize it's in the "you" anymore, you're totally immersed. I'm definitely looking forward to reading everything else this author will release!

I think my only critique and the reason for the star deduction is that I think the book could've been shorter. The first half was incredible, it had the perfect pace and just the right amount of angst and slow building tension that had me screaming in anticipation. But the second half was much, much slower. Too slow in my opinion. Some of it could've been cut out easily and it wouldn't have impacted the storyline negatively. Nonetheless, a very solid read!!!

There was a lot to love about this book. The sass levels are unreal, the prose is gorgeous, Gideon is great, and the spicy scenes were smokin' hot.

I kinda went back and forth as to what I wanted to rate it. It's my first 2nd person POV book and while I don't think I'm a convert, I did still enjoy it a lot, just not quiiiite as much as I would have if MC was just her own character. That being said, I'm not gonna mark down a book because it was a POV that I chose to read. I settled on 4.5 stars. I do think that a line edit or a copy edit would have brought the book up to a perfect 5 for me, just to remove the filters, repeats, and missing words to make it really shine. But all in all it was an excellent debut and I'd rec this book to anyone that loves spicy moth men and sass.

"It seems like some mythological legends are words made flesh. For example," he drawled, the ice in his tone becoming much more biting, "you may very well be a harpy."

This book was so much fun to read! I love this author's way with words. So often, I was deeply immersed in "our" thoughts at moments when in other books, I might be distracted or even skimming. Those long prose-y paragraphs tend to lose my interest, but with this series, they swallow me whole and leave me no choice but to experience them.

You'd show him how much of a harpy you could be; you were only getting started. Nodding to yourself in determination, you began your ascent up the stairs as your descent into what may have been madness commenced.

After going out of order and reading Sin & Spell first, I had a good feel for the 2nd person POV and was able to jump right into it after the first page. This book is distinctively different from it's successor, in a pleasing way. I quite enjoyed the mythology aspect and comparisons throughout the book as well, it sounds like author Kore has some background there.

The feeling of his lips meeting yours wasn't an explosion of fireworks; rather, it was like freefalling into a vat of molasses, slowly drifting to a stop as the world froze and blurred around you.

I enjoyed Gideon all around, but The angst at the end was not quite what I was expecting either, and not in a bad way.

Overall, I'm excited to dive further into the Tenebra City books, with Flame & Fraud next!

2nd Person POV - Just Wow!

I admit to getting this book because I was curious about reading a modern, adult, full-length novel in 2nd person POV. I had read short stories and of course Bright Lights, Big City, but never a MODERN adult full-length before in a genre that I find highly entertaining. I actually wondered if it could be done well.

For your first published work, BRAVO AUTHOR! What an excellent job you have done!

It took me a while to get through it because it is quite an adjustment, but this book was really entertaining! I loved the mythology spin throughout and both Gideon and You (or should I say 'me', lol). The second to the last chapter had me squirming! YOU, know the one, author, but good for you for having the guts to go there!

Overall, the characters were all well-drawn, both the main and secondary! Grandma, the fairy friends, and her fatherly Minotaur friends were highly entertaining.

READERS: If you haven't read this POV before and are curious, I highly recommend this book. This is an adult fantasy novel! Be forewarned! The steamy times are Very SMEXY!

I have purchased your second in the Tenebra City series and the Grinch novella. I am looking forward to reading them both! Again, Excellent Job, as a fellow author I know the work that went into writing in this POV and still staying true to a well-written and entertaining novel in this genre. Bravo!

Unique and well-crafted story with some seriously creative steam!

Right off the bat, I was thrown off by it being in second tense (think choose your own adventure). I was hoping it was just a prologue, but it persisted through the entire story. I got used to it, and I can't think of a better testament to the quality of writing than the fact that I got over it. I will absolutely NOT be looking forward to reading more second tense in the future, but as a novelty this one time? Great.
The story itself was simple but good, the world it's set in described very well and unique for me. Gideon was an awesome character, and the steam was INTENSE.
My one beef with this is I didn't like the main character. Like, at all. She was a bratty, self-centered college girl, and although I understood the initial chemistry between them, I really needed her to mature, and she never really did. There was one really impressive, brave thing that she did, but it felt like an isolated incident.
All that being said, I think this was an issue that was heightened by the wonky tense. If you're good with bratty college girls (and I know a lot of readers are) the tense could be even better for it. So, not a perfect start to a new author, but I'll definitely be reading more from them.

let me just say that this is my first time reading a 2nd POV book. i really thought i wouldn’t get into it, but i was so wrong! it’s completely different than traditional stories with third POV. BUT it’s definitely my favorite kind of POV now 🤭

to the review:

i gave it 5 stars, and i RARELY give books 5 stars unless i loved every single part of it and i did! the relationship between *yourself* and gideon ? ugh chefs kiss. the fluff? 10/10. the smut? 10/10 (i 100% had to google what coremata was 🫣).

honestly, i was happy with the book being about their relationship blooming and catching their footing. then there was conflict?! love it. Kore wrote the characters so beautifully, she really has a way with words.

the amount of notes i have on this book compared to others is ✨astronomical✨. i wouldn’t have it any other way.

“You, my love, are a harpy,” he breathed, dipping to place his lips against the corner of your mouth. “A harpy and a moonflower and just you. Never in my life would I have imagined I would be deserving of such a gift.”

Quiver & Quill is a professor/student monster romance that is written 2nd person pov. You are the student walking into the first day of classes and one of them is Greek Mythology (ugh). And when you see the professor you almost shrivel away in embarrassment because it’s the same person you bumped into at the library. It’s the same person who you told “Greek Mythology was a waste of time”. Yikes. Professor Gideon is a broody asshole who loves tea, fixing up motorcycles and vintage cars, and calling you a harpy. Sparks of annoyance and chemistry fly and yeah he’s drawn to you like a moth to a flame even though you hate that phrase.

Gideon y’all? Oh my fuck. I expected the broody side but what I wasn’t expecting was the filthy talking, bring you soup and medicine when you’re sick side. He’s such a cutie and I could just gobble him up. I’m obsessed with him and he left me in a melty little puddle on the floor.

I never really got used to the use of 2nd person. It didn’t stop me from enjoying the story but it just felt uncomfy like wearing a new pair of shoes. But I will say that I feel like the more I read from AM Kore the more I’m going to enjoy this way of storytelling. I loved how the use of 2nd person spun this trope and made it unique and fun. I will also mention that while I enjoy some mythology retellings, I don’t really care about reading about actual mythology so I didn’t connect to Gideon’s passion when it came to that part of the book. Overall I had a fantastic time and I very much look forward to continuing this series soon.

What to expect:
Half moth half fae professor/human student
You gets sick/he takes care of you
Hate to love
“Good girl”
“Let’s see how many of my coremata you can take.” (Stretching)
Pegging
Dirty talking
Greek mythology
Biting
Light bondage

Quiver and Quill by A.M. Kore
Overall rating: 4/5 ⭐️
Spice rating: 4/5 🌶

**CONTAINS SPOILERS**

Never in my life have I read anything about a Mothman, but never say never. I have also never read a book in second person, which I have to admit at first it was hard to wrap my mind around. I got the hang of it and I got used to it and I loved it.

I love that Gideon was one of those main male characters that struggles with wanting to be accepted by someone, that has flaws and that isn’t perfect and his lover accepts him for his flaws and hobbies. I love the way this book was written and I am glad I picked it up.
I never take a lot of notes while reading but this book deserved it.
I gave the book four stars, why? I don’t always give books five stars this doesn’t mean that this wasn’t my favorite book to read this month because it is going on the January list of books that I loved this year. I gave it four stars because I was thrown off by the second person point of view. I’m not saying I would have liked it better if it was written in first or third person, I loved the plot of the book whether most think it was there or not, I loved the spice. (COREMATA thank you!)
I adored every page of this book. The main character standing up for him and going in fear to his grandmother to tell him off? Loved that. I like a fearful/fearless MC. I also love a broody lover like Gideon M. Dulcis. And no I will not spoil what the ‘M’ stands for. 😏

🌶🌶🌶🌶

This was so good! I found it randomly on tiktok and read it because I often enjoy smaller authors books, and I was so pleasantly surprised at how poetic it was!

“If you were hungry for him, he was ravenous, taking his fill and nearly leaching you of your soul as his tongue swept over yours, practically wrestling it into submission.”

Its a really good story about the molds our parents make for us, and breaking out of them. While ALSO being amazing smut! I would say it’s like 90% a relationship based story with like 10% outside plot to keep it moving really nicely!

“I once told you that the fae believe names hold power, but it is useless pretending that any being, living or dead, can hold more power over me than that of which you possess.”

If you enjoy student/teacher without the weird “no dating” rule you’ll enjoy this! He’s a fae /moth who’s just super elegant while we’re clumsy and loud and hilarious. Its a really good match up. (He makes us soup when we’re sick)

“He wanted your every breath, your every moan; in return, he would give you anything and everything you would or could ever want.”

(Also there’s one really hot scene where we peg him)

A Mothman fan must read!

I’ll admit, I’m new to lore surrounding the elusive cryptid Mothman and newer still to the works of fiction written about him. But A. M. Kore’s work is a revelation to me. I was unsure about the idea of 2nd person point of view, but our author makes it so rich and lush that it’s almost easy to forget.
She draws you into this world so fully, that stepping out of it feels like waking from a dream.
I’m not sure if I ever want the dream to end.
I also enjoyed the inclusion of other creatures as our main character’s friends, as that truly adds to the world building in a way I can’t quite describe.
Pick up this book and I believe you’ll love it as much as I do. And I can’t wait for whatever may come next from A. M. Kore and Eventide Falls!

Are you looking for a unique reading experience? Do you find yourself in a reading slump, and need to 'snap out of it'? Interested in the monster romance subgenre but are too hesitant to dive in? If you answered 'yes' to any of those questions then I have just the book for you: "Quiver and Quill" by A.M. Kore

5⭐/5⭐
4🌶️/5🌶️

"I want you. I want more than just to want you. It is entirely selfish of me." ...

I'm going to set the stage for y'all: "Quiver and Quill" is told through the second POV, which makes the reading experience totally immersive. You are a graduate student studying business at a monster-inclusive university. One of the requirements of the school is that you take one elective course every semester. Unfortunately, the only course available is about mythology (for me IRL this would NOT be unfortunate, lol. But maybe for you it is 🤷‍♀️). After a disastrous first encounter with your mythology professor, you find yourself in the strange position of being an excellent student despite your dislike of the subject. Your professor asks you to be his research assistant, causing you to spend even more time together. Slowly, your relationship becomes less combative, but not without its road bumps. Why are you two so inexplicably drawn together? Could your first assessment of your professor be totally off the mark? Oh, and did I mention your professor is a sexy, motorcycle riding, glasses wearing, half-fae Mothman?

I'm the type of reader who places a high value on the overall reading experience, even if a book isn't necessarily well written. But if a book IS well written, in addition to being a complete joy to read? That's a dangerous combination. "Quiver and Quill" fits that definition. While there were times where the FMC acted in a way that I disagreed with or conflicted with how I naturally act around other people, it's balanced out by all the ways I WISH I were like the FMC. In this book you are bold, possess ingenuity, and are highly emotionally intelligent.

Let's talk about the spice factor, because I gave it a high chili pepper rating. I thought the book would ease into the physical intimacy based on the FMC and MMC's first encounter, but I was wrong 🥴 and, honestly, it made sense that they would progress so fast given the amount of tension between the two of them. Despite this, the author does an excellent job exploring the emotional intimacy of their relationship (or lack thereof at that point in the story). This book doesn't shy away from incorporating monster appendages into their physical relationship, there are coremata (had to Google what that was, lol), wings, claspers, antenna. If someone is interested in reading a monster romance novel, but is a little hesitant because of, uh, monster anatomy 🥴 this is a good introductory book!

Here's what I especially loved about the book (I know that emoji is a butterfly, just bear with me):

🦋 Using the second POV throughout the book added to the sensuality of Gideon (MMC) and the FMC's relationship. Reading about their relationship was heightened in every way, their arguments felt more heated, their physicality more realistic (yes, even with all the monster stuff I listed above!), their emotional connection more intense.

🦋 There were moments where I thought the FMC was going to do one thing, but the author surprised me and had her act a totally different way! I was kept on my toes, nothing was predictable.

🦋 There's a fair amount of humor, and a plethora of adorable moments. One that stands out is when you are studying in your apartment, and Gideon comes over at 3 am to keep you company. You're drinking coffee to stay awake, and Gideon asks to have a taste. Instead of picking up your coffee cup, he kisses you 🥺

Finally, here are some quotes that I loved:

"Man, fuck that guy! Not literally, though. Well, maybe literally? No!"

"It was like nothing had changed, yet you knew you were on the brink of some kind of seismic shift."

"We have only started the descent. Your punishment is just beginning."

This was a very big step for me—it’s my first foray into monster romances, and well, I loved it. There’s honestly so much I want to talk about in this review that I feel like I might end up making a whole separate post dedicated to this later this month, but for now, let’s start here. So I enjoyed the ‘monster’ aspect so much more than I’d anticipated—the love interest in this one is half-moth and apart from a few moments, it didn’t feel too different from reading any other fantasy romance which was nice for a beginner like me. It’s also told in second person which was a pretty new experience too—again, apart from a few moments, it felt completely normal and it didn’t pull me out of the story. I loved the world that A.M Kore has created here—I love universities settings and this one is all about monsters and other mystical beings? Sign me up! But honestly, everything felt really well-thought-out and there are so many different places the other books in this series could go that I’m beyond excited to read the next books. My absolute favourite part was how layered the story felt—yes it’s a romance about a mothman, but there was so much in here about family expectations, friends and some amazing references to literature and mythology that I was not expecting. This was just so fantastic and I’ll definitely be making time to read the next books in this series as well.

God, do I love Mothman. Why do I love this cozy lil' cryptid so much?

The story was hot. So many of my favorite tropes, including college professor/student relationship, which we just don't see enough of. The story itself was worthy of five stars. Sexy times were off the charts and I have lots of questions about this cute little town. I will gladly read more in this world.

I wanted to give the second person POV a chance, and I waited to write my review so I could give my thoughts time to settle. I still don't like it but I don't think that was my hangup with this book. It honestly took me until about the 2/3 point of the book before I realized the main character, YOU, are a blank slate. With the POV comes certain restrictions, including a lot of telling (not showing) because YOU are having the reactions. You have no substantial back story, no noticeable character growth, no NAME. I personally like my books, regardless of genre, to supply at least two well-developed characters.

Still, I'm happy with this 4-star read and I'll happily pick up more in the Tenebra City series.

This was a perfect monster story! Moth man??? Yessirrrr. Wish there was more of Gideons povs throughout but the end one was perfect. Also the pegging was exactly what I needed, most monster stories have one dynamic and it was refreshing to see that both could cause the other to completely melt. The only issue I had was the second pov for our character. That is something I’d prefer in fan fiction. I’d prefer there just to be another mc instead. Also wish there was more dialogue between characters and less word building, but I think being stuck in one mind process throughout the book is what I don’t enjoy personally.

Once I adjusted to the perspective of the book I absolutely inhaled it. It's definitely not the usual perspective of book that I usually read (almost felt like a y/n fan fic) but the story was very interesting and oh so much fun. And boy do I love mothman.

I can't get over how much of the book I highlighted. The clever and fun references to mythology, Dantes inferno, and even to Kafka were absolutely delicious and had me cackling. Oh boy it was so sharp.

And Gideon gets absolutely railed like a train track.

I was really interested in this for the first part, but then after the first sex scene it started to drag for me, only picking up a little at the end when .

Don't get me wrong, the middle was cute, but it felt like it was taking forever to get to the point and this did cause me to enjoy the book as a whole a little less.

I still found it fairly entertaining and am looking forward to the other books in this series.

Loved the world-building in this story! 2nd person POV was an interesting choice and not one I’ve read before, took a while to get used to it but it really worked. Gideon the mothman prof was hot, unfortunately I’ve realised that the student/teacher trope is not one that works for me but the sex scenes were still very well written. I’ll definitely carry on with this series as the universe the author has created is fascinating and I’ve been told there’s a dragon coming up 👀 Monster romance fans who also like NA romance (and mothman!) should definitely add this to their TBRs!

This second-person pov monster smut was intriguing and it was fun to try something new, but I don’t think monster smut is for me. The spice level was way too much for me as a beginner smut reader, and I think I prefer more human love interests. The pov took some getting used to, but I did eventually, basically thinking of “you” more so as the character’s name. The writing was good even if the plot was a bit cliche, and I appreciated the mythological aspects. However, because I had to skim a lot I’m giving this two stars. It’s good in quality but my personal preferences just didn’t match up!
