For two millenia, Luke Irontree has hunted vampires across the world. Born in Gaul, he was trained to fight in the Roman legions, and still carries his trusted ancient weapons. These days, he hunts on the streets of modern day Portland, alone, night after night. Unexpected encounters with a local werewolf pack as well as a mortal out stalking the same prey Luke does offer a chance to forge new connections - alliances much needed when the streets become flooded with vampires intent on slaughter.

The concept for this series is great, action-packed Urban Fantasy with plenty of ancient Roman history thrown in, featuring a diverse cast of characters and a found family theme which I always love. This is a solid series opener, though the writing style could use a little more polish. Especially the dialogue feels a little off sometimes, partially due to the author's habit of overusing names in conversations - if you have two people talking to each other, they don't need to address each other by name in every other sentence. There's room for improvement on that front, which I expect will come with more practice - this is a debut novel, after all, and a pretty good one all things considered. I'm definitely game for more.

Dark Fangs Rising is a fun, popcorn fantasy book that's about Luke Irontree, a world-weary immortal who's been hunting vampires since Roman times. Now in modern day Portland, Luke is dealing with a plague of vampires on the streets, sourced from the local homeless population. He starts off alone and isolated, but after biting more than he can handle, he reluctantly teams up with Pablo, a werewolf and Delilah, another hunter with a mysterious past. He has a ginger cat called Alfred and a Batman-esque house.

Key features--

* Cool weapons and gear (although I'm not convinced that a gladius is the ideal vampire hunting weapon. Luke fights with a gladius and a rudis (wooden sword) in each hand. Luckily, he drags out a proper Roman shield at the end for a boss fight, which is the way to go with a gladius.

* Lots of cool melee weapon fights

* Flashbacks to Roman times

Some of the fights against endless tides of vampires feel a bit videogamey (rooms are 'cleared') but there's a great deal of energy, snappy banter and interesting side characters.

Urban fantasy can feel bland if the writer can't pull off a strong sense of place (I've gone through books where everything feels like a TV show set in New York but shot in Vancouver) but Lafollette evokes a strong vibe for Portland, especially with descriptions of local food and craft beer.

No romance, but plenty of action. There's a positive LGBT vibe with Pablo and the LGBT werewolf pack, and Luke ends up adopting a trans werewolf teenager at the end of the book. And there's a whole swathe of sequels in a rapid release queue. I'll definitely check out the next one.

Solid 3 stars

This was… ok. Definitely a freshman effort, but with some more practice I think the author has potential. There was a little too much tell-me instead of show-me, which made it hard to connect to the characters in the beginning of the book. I found it easier to get into the flashback chapters than the meat of the story.
As an Oregonian it was fun to read something set here, and I especially appreciated how inclusive the book was (very Portland lol).

Wow, great debut novel by a new indie author.

Luke Irontree is an almost two thousand year old vampire hunter from the Roman legions. He still uses that style of killing his prey—carrying his trusty gladius and Roman shield into battle. He's human, but given a gift (curse?) of immortality from his Roman god Mithras.

Luke is worn down. centuries of killing and seeing those you love die will do that to you. He's unwilling to trust or let anyone new in. In this introduction to the series, the reader will watch Luke begin to grow and deal with the hurt he's had over his long life. That was the interesting character development to this book.

The rest is pure action. Lots of vampires dying on Luke's swords, oh, and on his werewolf friend's claws as well. Because yes, there are werewolves! Only takes the action up a notch.

If you like urban fantasy with tons of action, salty, troubled, main characters, and mysteries yet to be explored, this is the new series for you!

As always, I end my reviews with two things. Did I enjoy the story, and would I read the sequel? A resounding yes to both of these!

Dark Fangs Rising is action packed to the max!
Luke Irontree - a nineteen-hundred year old loner - is a badass vampire hunter who has dedicated his life to protecting the innocent.
I loved how he was a super tough guy in one breath, but also a compassionate man who was completely devoted to his cat, Alfred.
After a near death encounter with more vampires than he’d been prepared to take on, Luke is saved by Pablo and Delilah, and together they form a kickass team.
I loved watching Luke’s barriers slowly come down throughout this story. After years of being a brooding loner, he finally allows himself to care for others on an emotional level. He’s able to make friends.
I also loved that we had two timelines going throughout the story, which lead to an intertwined, surprise ending.
Dark Fangs Rising has a lot of diverse characters, including different races, labels and genders.
I really enjoyed getting to know all the characters. They added heart to the story.

I had mixed feelings about Dark Fangs Rising. I loved the parts set in the modern day, the relationship between our hero and his growing band of friends and the fact that Luke is not infallible. I found the parts of the book set in the past to be far more difficult to read.

While I appreciate the effort that the writer went to in terms of historical accuracy, I found the detail and naming made parts of the writing almost impenetrable for me. I’m sure that anyone familiar with Roman military would not have struggled.

I liked Luke, laughed out loud in parts and winced when the good guys took some body blows. I would just have preferred the book to stay in the present.

Well written with excellent proofreading, no tongue twister names to distract you, bits of history, paranormal and plenty of action. A bit like the Roman version of Highlander but with vampires. I enjoyed all of the previously mentioned parts as well as the new slant on an eternal warrior. I'll be looking for the next books to find out how Luke earned his mission.

Talk about history with a twist. The book is interesting with a lot of flash backs of the roman era of the vampire hunter that is the main character in the book. Great plot, excellent timeline. a must read for any and all book lovers everywhere.

Really enjoyed this book, lots of supernatural involvement. Great storyline and characters. I particularly liked the way Luke's former time as a Roman soldier was presented.
A different take on vampires, an immortality rechargeable vampire hunter, werewolves, humans and their interactions.

In the first official novel in the Luke Irontree series we learn about Luke's origins by going back and forth between flashbacks and current events. This isn't an unusual literary device, but it is used here with great efficacy. We learn how he has lived as long as he has, we learned about his youth, and we learn what it's like now fighting the strange surge of vampires in Portland, Oregon. In his present, Luke makes friends who help them in the fight. The characters are excellent foils for each other as they grow in closeness and experience. The plot and setting are richly detailed, the characters believable and diverse, the writing excellent. Also, these books have their own soundtrack! Definitely recommend!

I am so excited that I found this new author! I have high hopes for this series if book 1 is any indication.

The historical and Roman aspects are pure attention grabbing. The mostly none stop action thrilling. And the character growth, especially Luke's, is inspiring.

I mean you get an immortal Roman vampire hunter, a werewolf best friend, vampires, non stop action and history. What's not to love?

I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the next.

Luke Irontree is a 1900 year old centurion who has been battling vampires since the Roman empire ruled the world. He's been living a laidback life in Portland for the last 60 years, dispatching the occasional vampire and keeping to himself. Now he's seeing a lot more vampire activity and worries that the city he calls home is in for a world of trouble. But that's not the only change coming his way. Luke the loner is about to get some unexpected help when his friendly neighborhood bartender, Pablo turns out to be a werewolf and Delilah, a newcomer to the city turns out to another person out hunting vampires.

I started out really enjoying the mythology of Dark Fangs Rising by C. Thomas Lafollette. Luke, Pablo, and Delilah are interesting characters with just enough mystery in their individual backstories to make them worth knowing. I also appreciated that Lafollette fleshed out Pablo and his pack as characters with rich, diverse, personal relationships that made the characters themselves more relatable. Unfortunately, the story was weighed down by drawn out, repetitive fight scenes where he kept reminding the reader that Luke had his 'gladius unsheathed, his wooden rudis, and his hoodie." Once per fight would have been more than enough. The need to include so much exposition slowed down the story and took the action out of what were intended to be action sequences.
Overall: Luke Irontree was an okay first date but I don't see that we're in for a second.

Not much into warrior-type books. However, well written and edited. Have not decided if will continue the series (I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.)

I found this story to be entertaining, well-thought-out, well-written and just a fun read.

The humor is subtle and the characters are compelling. A nice mix of perspectives and backgrounds was a pleasant departure from the all male cast of the typical action drama like this.

Honestly I enjoyed just reading the story so much, I didn't take notes on anything particularly great or awful. For me, that's high praise. If a storyteller can keep me so wrapped in the story that I don't notice a problem or neat trick of authordry, they've done a superb job.

Four stars from me means I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in an immersive story and satisfying entertainment.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I enjoyed this book very much. The action was well done and plenty of it. The history is done in a way that I found interesting and did not find it distracting at all. There was a vast number of interesting characters that enriched the story. I also enjoyed the growth of Luke. Learning to make friends after years of being alone and afraid of losing them. This is a new series and author for me. I will be eager to read the next book in this series.

This book pulls you in from the beginning. I like the way that the past is written in excepts to explain the present. I like the way Luke gets people on his side of the vampire attacks. Each of the people bring their own characters to the forefront and add to the enjoyment. I love the action and sensitivity in the story. I had problems putting my book down even to eat. Now to find book 2!

Dark Fangs Rising. My review.

Luke Irontree has been hunting Vampires since his days in the Roman Legion, for the better part of two thousand years he has battled the undead with Gladius and Rudis in hand. After moving to Portland the time weary hunter let's things slip a Little too much and in his adopted town it's gone from one or two Vampires to a horde that maybe will be too much for him.

But after a particularly nasty encounter he finds friends and allies in a Werewolf and a badass human vampire hunter.

Now is the time for Luke to put behind him the years of isolation and get to the bottom of the sudden vampire surge, but can he find it within himself to partner up, make friends along with all the pain that may bring?

I bought Dark Fangs Rising on a whim after seeing an advert for it, thinking it would be at least a good throwaway read. What I actually got was a fully immersive world seen through the eyes of an immortal that on the face of it Carries his years lightly, but has several life times of mistakes and regrets and losses. Luke is an immensely likable protagonist and has secrets from the ages. I found myself really caring for not only him but his new Werewolf and hunter companion who are just as equally well defined as characters.

The introduction to the Werewolf's pack was handled well, didn't feel forced at all and it has added lots of new characters to explore. The action is handled brilliantly, bone crunching and bloody with an all out modern battle at one point, but what I really liked was that although Luke was able to chop and stake with the best of them, more than keeping up with the Werewolves was that fact that he drew on centuries worth of battle tactics and strategies and that the author was able to explain this in a way it made sense to the reader. As for those centuries, we get to see what made Luke the hunter and killer he is through a series of well placed flashbacks to his childhood and then time in the Legion, these were handled really well with an obvious load of research and at no point did these chapters take away from the main story. This was thankfully the first in many books in this series and was an absolutely phenomenal read

Mr. Lafollette has come up with a premise for a modern-day (yet also very much not) vampire hunter that doesn't come across as edgy, angsty, or toxic. His characters are human(ish) and carry flaws and strengths, though I would love to see those explored and developed more.

You will like this book if:
- you enjoy accurate, detailed historical fiction
- you like urban fantasy without a ton of magic
- diverse casts of characters are important to you and make the story more immersive

This may not be for you if you prefer:
- flowery, detailed descriptions, or a more literary approach
- high magic in a modern setting

It started a bit slow for me, and the purpose of the flashbacks to the character's ancient past weren't entirely clear until roughly 80% of the way through the book, but there was a great "ah ha" moment that brought them all together. The author's writing style can be a little dry and unvaried at times, especially in the beginning, but it does improve as the book progresses, and there are some fun little references thrown in that give a good chuckle (I won't say "pop culture," as they're a bit niche to the target audience, but if you know, you know). Overall it's worth a read if you like late Roman-era history and reading about non-ambiguously-evil vampires getting their comeuppance.

I like the premise of the book… it’s got fair ideas for a plot and a main character, but the storyline is so rushed and lacks the details needed to really grip a reader and pull them into it.

Lots of skipping over details and time rushing past… we’ve met a stranger and now it’s two weeks later on the next page and they’re at the stage where one stays over… no actual explanation of how the main character acquires his longevity… we know how he keeps it but not why it works, what caused/triggered it.

Feels like a desperate need to include all the usual quotas… we have a black female sidekick, lots of gay minor characters and a trans character too.

Succinctly, it’s a fair story which is very poorly written.

Zero interest in reading any more of the series.

A Roman Centurion Vampire Hunter in modern day Portland!

What an amazing continuation of Luke Irontree & The Last Vampire War! In this installment of Luke’s saga, he’s back home in Portland. Love the addition of Alfred the cat by the way. Only this time, Luke is not working alone, he actually makes friends, something he hasn’t done often because he always ends up seeing them die. In a way, this story starts out with Luke making new friends and then reuniting with an old, one-time friend. This story is exceptionally well-written, it flows beautifully and the flashbacks are exceptional! I can’t wait to read the next one in this series.

I have never read anything from this author before but I have to say I will now continue to do so! Dark Fangs Rising for me was a little bit hard to get into at first. Some of the references to things that have apparently happened historically threw me off at first. The wording such as the military campaigns of years past made me hesitate quite a bit. Then, I looked up the words and it all came together! From then on the book was a great read! I learned new things which was amazing! And I love the cat!

awesome

I have read this book and giving my Honest review.
A new author, what a book.
From start to finish, enjoyed every page, chapter.
Could not put this down.
What a story comes to life. Love Luke, it was great to go back in time to Rome where Luke came from, as a Roman solider.
I love vampire stories, but this is a must. Exciting, gore, had me laughing in some parts, sad but a big twist, did not see that coming, and another one too.
I am not spoiling, you must read for yourself.
I am going to get book 2 need to find out more, of Luke and his friends.

A Great Read

The story is well written, plot built as the separate timelines converged. Great characters of varied backgrounds make a strong community ready to face whatever mayhem that comes their way.
The historical accuracy was interesting, but at times seemed overly detailed; more than was needed from main the story.
Even so, I could not stop reading, and will continue the series.

Tale of a Vampire Hunter

Just finished reading book one in this series. Main character is Luke Irontree. This first novel lays out some of his history, hope the rest is revealed soon. Luke, along with new found friends takes on what appears to be a growing population of vampires. I recommend this novel to all supernatural readers. You'll be hooked like me.
