We shared one crazy mistake of a night.
Now she just walked back into my life in a sexy little string bikini...
And her son has my crooked smile and dimples.

On leave one night thirteen years ago, I slept with my battle brother’s little sister.
Layla was wild, uninhibited, and everything I could ever want, but nothing I could have.

So I walked away.
I let her live her dreams, instead of pining after a man deployed.
When I got out, I never looked her up, instead I went searching for the brotherhood I missed,
and I found it with the Evil Dead MC.

Now, out of the blue, she's back.
And this time I won't walk away, even if her brother will want to bury me six feet under when he finds out.

When trouble at the Club starts piling up, I know exactly who's to blame.
Officer Rebecca Reilly, our new sheriff's deputy, is a jealous woman.
But she'll be sorry she ever screwed with me, because I'll do whatever I have to do to protect my club and my woman.

I clicked this solely because the blurb teased crazy OW drama… and Rebecca was certifiable, but the other parts were quite flat, and I was bored a lot.

Layla and Jake spend one night together when his flight is canceled, and her older brother invites him to their home. (This happens in the first chapter, so these should be small spoilers.) Layla wants to ditch her V-card before going off to college and thinks Jake is super-hot, so she lies that she’s the live-in housekeeper and invites him to her cabin. After the deed, she confesses (she’s 18 and his seal buddy’s little sister), and Jake freaks a bit, but they depart on good terms. He leaves before she wakes up but leaves her his dog tags. The second chapter picks up 14-ish years later with Jake in a MC and Layla a single mother of a 13-yr-old boy.

Possible Issues

Bottom Line- This was ok for me, BUT I was in it for the crazy OW. The rest needed more development/transitions. Everything was very instant and surface-y, there wasn’t any real feels or angst. It wasn’t even really dramatic. We were shown nothing to support their deep soulmate connection because they had a ONS almost 15-years earlier then fall back into bed immediately. Even the kid (who is missing the entire book) is instantly good with leaning Aaron wasn’t his dad and Jake is. 🤷‍♀️I needed more.

Safety-

1 Layla and Jake Stars

This review has a lot of spoilers.

Short review -one night stand leading to a pregnancy. Hero doesn't find out for eleven years that he has a son. The H/h reconnect and during that time he has sexual activity with another woman for club purposes. HEA.

Detailed Review

I really enjoyed the first few books in this series and I do enjoy Nicole James's writing style but unfortunately this book did not work for me. Lots of love out there for it though so please don't let my thoughts put you off.

There were a few key reasons that it was a one star read for me.
Firstly , I wasn't very keen on either the Hero, Jake, or the heroine, Layla. I didn't connect with them and it didn't feel like either one developed very much.

Secondly , there are at two very descriptive sex scenes between Jake and another woman and one of those is after he has reconnected with Layla. The second one is because he needs to find out some information for the Club. There is no mention of using condoms at all, in fact I'm pretty sure he doesn't. He doesn't have an emotional connection with Rebecca, the other woman, but he is clearly really into it. And he uses endearments too.

Jake and Rebecca-

Her ass jiggles with every strike, and I’m getting harder by the minute. Her ass is turning pink, and I stop. I run a hand over the marks, and she moans. “You gonna be my good girl now?”

She looks up at me with adoring eyes, and I cup her cheek, then pull her to her feet. She’s a bit shaky, so I close my hands around her waist to steady her and turn her toward the car. “Your turn, darlin’.”

I make her wait until she’s crazy with the need to orgasm. “Please, Jake. Please.” I lean over and bite her shoulder. “Now, baby.”

I hold her up with one arm locked around her waist. When her breathing evens out, I sink my dick inside her, fully erect again. I fuck her hard against the car, until I too explode and collapse on top of her.

By the time we get to page 86 , he has reconnected and is having sex with Layla. By page 96, he's back banging Rebecca to get info for the club.

She doesn’t hesitate to spread eagle over the hood. I smack her ass.
“So pretty. You want me?”
“Yes, so, so bad. I brought some toys. They’re on the trunk.”
“More candles?” I lift a brow.
“No. Other stuff. For me.” ........ a large vibrator, a flogger, a blindfold, and some contraption that looks like it straps on her and vibrates. I chuckle. This could be fun.

"Are you close?”
“Yes. Whip me. Please.”
I give her a few strokes on her cheeks with the flogger, but it’s not Rebecca I want to watch get off , it's Layla whose pussy I want to see my dick sliding in and out of. I’m done with this girl. I should have been done with her the last time, and I would have been if I hadn’t needed to find out just what she knows. But now I know. Since she’s given me what I want, the least I can do is give her what she wants.

The book has a secret baby trope - Layla and Jake had sex on the first night they met and he left the next morning. They don't meet again for eleven years and Jake realises that Layla has had his son. She married another man and pretended the child was his. I think that was made me really dislike her. Once they reconnect they have sex almost straight away and then in effect live together for three weeks and then they are declaring love for each other. It was too much , too fast for me. Also, the only time we see Jake with their son, Cody , is at the very end of the book. It would have been nice to see them together as a family more and particularly the development of the relationship between father and son.

HEA? Yes
Cheating? I think so. He had decided he wanted to pursue something with Layla and they have had sex but then goes off to get info for the club and to get it he has to have sex with Rebecca. They don't have intercourse on that second occasion but it's still a pretty intense and intimate interlude. He lies and never tells Layla he has had a sexual relationship with Rebecca.

Nothing good in this one. I picked it up because —- secret baby—

There was no actual reason to deny that child his father. I hated that the most - it was selfish and irrational.

After reconnecting- those two had no chemistry and both were unlikeable people. There was also no sincerity in their love except for lust which not that I felt but was told they felt.

Also, I find it in bad taste to open the book with a very long and very descriptive scene of how the hero has sex with someone else. I don’t see the point. We can infer those things, we don’t need pages of details. It put me off, not the fact that he did it because he was single - but why include it? I don’t understand.

Loved it!

Story: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Trope: second chance
Angst: 😱😱
Smexy: 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Nicole James writes some of the best MC stories around and this one certainly lived up to that. Great story that's fast paced and well written. Wonderful characters with a hero who are flawed, but wants to do better for his woman. Just tons of chemistry between the 2 MCs. I loved that they had held pieces of each other throughout the years ❤.

Not great

I have read a lot of books by this author and it seems lately that I want to skip through pages. It just seems like its forced and really corny sex scenes. Thank goodness they are on unlimited because I don't think I'd buy anymore of them. Not sure what's changed but I'm not really impressed with the writing of these last few books.

Not my favorite in the series

I've enjoyed most books in this series but struggled with Jake. Layla and Jake had pretty much a 1 hour stand and that's it. I couldn't find the connection between them. I also didn't love how he was sleeping and !messing around with someone else after Layla rejoined his life.
It could have been more.

Meh….
H/OW sex scene was hot AF and H loved it. Plus it was reminiscent of things he did and said to h later in book. That’s when H/OW interaction is too much for me…and 99% of my reads include OW drama often with on page sex.

Life is beautiful - enjoy the ride.

I love this series so much. Jake and Layla meet again after 12 years and boy does she have a surprise for him.
I would say second chance but they never really has a first chance at love.

Sexy action and danger around unexpected corners.

A great edition to the series.

mixed feelings

This review is going to be hard to write. I normally LOVE anything and everything written by this author. This is the first book that I have a lot of trouble with.

Possible spoilers ahead - I’m trying to make it as general as possible.

I didn’t like the heroine - at all. She lied to the male lead from the get go. Told a big lie in the aftermath and tricked another man into thinking something and he died with that belief. It wasn’t like she didn’t know how to contact the male lead, she just didn’t.

I didn’t like the hero. He does something after he reconnects with the female lead that I cannot be okay with.

They both somewhat redeem themselves in the end but it felt very rushed and I just couldn’t get over the stuff in the beginning. I’ll stick with this series and author and hope this was a one off.

It was eh

I hate writing these but. If you go back to the 1st 5 books they were great. It seems when a series goes on that darkness goes away and that drama. This felt like it was written for the sake of being written. There were other characters who seemed more deserving of there own books. I felt like Jake was not it to much paint by numbers simple and the characters felt super weak. The total lack of twist was terrible I have seen fatal attraction and it felt to simmer.

Who doesn't love an mc romance. With a rival mc causing trouble so careful strategies are needed to avoid a full on war. Oh and a psychopathic love sick deputy sheriff causing trouble there is never a dull moment.

Jake and his one night stand he hasn't forgotten

Shane and Jake flight has been delayed because of bad weather on the four day leave for Christmas. Chris another soldier invite them to his home. It's a big ranch in Texas. He's a newly retired Navy Seal and Shane and Jake are Army Airborne that saved his life in Iraq.
They accept. That night Jake can't sleep and this young woman comes flying up in a beat up old pick up truck and tells him she's the housekeeper. He's attracted to her right off the bat.
She is too. She dares him to jump in the river on the ranch.
They do and they end up having sex all night. But he didn't know that she was a virgin. He felt bad that she didn't stop him. But she told him she wanted to lose her virginity before she left for college.
He decides to leave early the next morning to grab a flight home.
Twelve years later he meets up with Chris again and he offers Shane and Jake a job to work for him in his security company.
Chris introduce his sister to Shane and Jake. Jake didn't know he had sex with Chris's sister. He also meets her son Cody.
She now lives in CA with her son. He needs to talk to her about their past. He still attracted to her but she's not to excited about him belonging to a MC.
He tries to prove to her that they aren't all evil. That they have wives and children.
He has to win her over. The sex between them is off the charts. Plus he finds out Cody is his son. He wants to be part of his life. He can't have anymore children because he got injured with shrapnel when he did a few more tours of duty.
She gets in danger with the Deputy Sheriff Rebecca stalking Jake for herself.
Jake has to save her. He wants to get to know his son and be a family.
Great story of two people that passed in the night, made a son and Twelve years later try to pick up where they left off.
Another great story by Nicole James

I like this author but I couldn’t be bothered with this book. Hero is just scummy (liar ) and there no connection outside of sex with these two.
They meet and hook up one night and he takes off the next morning (she’s 18 trying to lose her virginity and he’s in his mid 20s or something) 12 years later they cross paths but not before author decides to detail him having sex with crazy cop 🙄. When Layla and hero met up again it’s not long before she’s hooking up with him. And she confesses that 10year old boy is his son. Just couldn’t get into this book bc
He’s still messing around with cop lady bc he’s after info…he gets her off by using toys 🤮 he lies to Layla about Rebecca (crazy cop) and crazy cop does some stupid stuff like tries to kill Layla. Don’t like stories like this bc he decided to go there with nut job knowing she was bad news and heroine has to suffer for his stupid choices. She just takes him back, crazy cop kill’s herself and they live happily ever after. What a load of crap…all bc of the hero and his dumbass choices.

This book by several people have said it's the worst one. The last couple have been the worst in my opinion. Still not much in MC dealings and not as long as I wish it had been. If there was more MC then it would have been longer and better. I had a problem getting into it and will say the end was best.

This is Jake's and Layla's book. They met a long time ago when an ice storm had Jake and his army buddy got stranded in Texas... they were flying in to get a short visit in Mississippi but couldn't get out so a marine they had met overseas and helped out, invited them to his house. Jake was the only one awake when Layla drove up. The real of that is in the book.

I wish there was so much more of Cody in the book instead of just the last couple of pages. At his age he probably would have been a bit pissed off but at the same time he never had anyone else so I can see him handling like he did but I don't agree with the uncle telling Cody. That was up to Momma when and how.

Hopefully the next is better so off to the last for now book.

Christmas leave and a storm strands Jake Webber in Texas and invited for an overnight by fellow SEAL, Chris Draper. Over a solo drink on the porch, Jake’s struck dumb by gorgeous Layla. By mutual agreement, the pair go off to a cabin and get past their smoldering looks and teasing kisses. Cleaning up later, Jake notices a hard truth and Layla gives him more.

A dozen years later, a compromised deputy sheriff decides she wants more sex from Jake but he refuses. Chris is in town to meet Jake and brings Layla, Jake’s flabbergasted to see his younger self walk over flashing familiar dimples and crooked smile. The deputy takes to harassing Layla just as she and Jake try to work through their feelings and parenting issues.

Fantastic read! Really enjoyed seeing Jake's story and finding out more about his life outside of the Evil Dead MC. Layla and Jake meet due to unforeseen circumstances. They're together. Next morning, Jake is gone. Then we wait twelve years later for them to see each other again. Layla has definitely changed and Jake is still the same behavior wise. However, he never forgot her---just never called her. You know---the typical biker thing! A lot has happened since their initial meeting. Naturally, there's drama and people that need "handled" the MC way. Great story! I can't wait to read Layla's older brother's story. Plus, I look forward to reading Trick's story!

Awesome!!

Wow!! To meet someone at 18 yrs old and have your whole life ahead of you and think you are invincible is something everyone seems to think. Well when you have your virginity taken and you find out you're pregnant, you do the next best thing, you find a guy who will step up and take the challenge. Now 12 yrs later you come face to face with your baby daddy. He is clueless until his buddy states the facts that the kid looks just like him. But the problem is he is in an MC. Can you accept him as the kids father? Will he be up.for the challenge or will he just drop the ball like you think he will?

Jake KU, 255 pgs **** 1/14/25 Jake & Layla & Cody

4 stars. This book was longer, so I got more story, and it was a very good story. They met when Layla turned 18 and was determined to lose her virginity. Jake was in the military and on weekend leave, so he happened to be in the right place at the right time. They didn’t see each other again for many years, around 10 years. Jake found out he was a father, and he also had a psycho female cop stalking him and causes all kinds of havoc. There was some action, not as much as in the earlier books and I miss that. The story was good, and the ending was sufficient

This is the story of Jake & Layla. They met one cold night during a lay over from an ice storm. Then War happen, fast forward 12 years and they meet again by chance. I absolutely loved this book and this couple!! I couldn’t put the book down, their story is sexy and sweet. The chemistry between Jake & Layla was hot and undeniable.

A sweet romantic story

I am reading this series over time as they are released. The storylines are different which is difficult to do. This was is really heart-felt story about Jake and Layla. I liked it. Both Jake and Layla are young and have a intimate meeting and then Jake has to go back in the military. Years later Layla’s brother Chris figures something out and organize a meeting. The story picks up there. It’s sweet and low angst. The best quote from the book — Life is beautiful - enjoy the ride. Read On!

History

I have read all of the Evil Dead books and they are each amazing in their own way but Jake and Layla has just a little more mojo than most. Jake you fall in love with in the other books but Layla just makes him that much more appealing. MS James can spin a MC love story you never tire of her characters or checking in with them. I will be sad when this series is finished.

Jake and Layla meet on a farm in Texas during an ice storm, they have a one night stand , which leads to her becoming pregnant. After 12 years they are reunited only because her brother offers Jake and his buddy Shane a job. The story is a good read with lots of different characters , full of mystery, kidnapping, murder, and sexy steamy romance . I recommend with a 5 Stars review

Entertaining

This book was just okay. Slow start and was hard for me to get thru but it does pick up a out half way thru. The plot is fairly predictable and while I was glad they got to their HEA, I basically knew what was going to happen early in the book, plot was kind of formulaic. Jake was a lot tamer in this book than he has been in earlier EDMC books, so this book was a little anticlimactic

JAKE AND LAYLA

They reconnect 12 years after one night of something really unforgettable for both of them. There lives have changed from their dreams but both are content. He is a brother in the Evil Dead MC and she is not the attorney she wanted to be but a paralegal with a son who is the center of her world. After her brother sets them up to cross paths again, and a dangerous situation ends, they finally have their family and the Brotherhood of the Evil Dead.
