Philip Wilkinson (born 1955) is the author of non-fiction books for children and adults. He was educated at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He worked as an editor prior to becoming an author.

He specializes in works on history, the arts, religion, and architecture and has written over forty titles.

Oxford Learner’s Dictionary defines myth as

“A story from ancient times, especially one that was told to explain natural events or to describe the early history of a people”

Myths began as stories told around the fire in small meetings by successive generations. They were passed orally during the initial times. Later, people started writing them as novels, poems, and plays.

This book is divided into many sections. Each section contains myths from that particular continent. Due to the abundance of myths in Asia, the Asian continent is again divided into two sections which are west and central Asia and south and east Asia.

It describes almost all the myths around the world, from the Greek epics dealt brilliantly by Homer to the epics of India, like Mahabharata and Ramayana. The biggest positive of this book is its layout. All the topics are divided into small elegant subdivisions with beautiful pictures to give the readers the best reading experience.

Books like this are integral to our lives as they enable us to know more about the myths to reinforce our cultural identity as human beings.

This a visually stunning masterpiece with so many vibrant paintings (sometimes covering two pages), photos of artefacts, pretty illustrations and a wonderful gold and black colour scheme.

Myths and Legends is no encyclopaedia but it does cover the general myths of Europe, West and Central Asia, South and East Asia, Africa, the Americas including the Caribbean and Oceania with at least 20 pages on each.

Though a third of the book is about Europe there is enough on other parts of the world to give you a starting point to work from if you are interested in finding out more.

The myths range from Beowulf to Oedipus to Shiva to the myths of the Navajo (a tribe of Native Americans), the Maori, the Maya, the Taino (the first settlers of the Caribbean) and so many more.

My only grievance is that the titles and artists of the stunning artwork showcased here are not always named.

Very well constructed and easy to read. Suitable for all ages.

İkinci Okuma: Bu da araştırma sürecinde okuduğum bir diğer kitap. Uzun süre sonra geri dönmek güzel oldu birkaç detayı hatırlamak ve yeniden öğrenmek de iyiydi. Mitoloji sevenler için iyi bir kaynak, alınmalı bence.

Bayıldım diyebilirim kitaba. Zaten böyle görseli bol olan kuşe kağıtlı kitaplar her zaman ilgimi çekmiştir. DK serisi de benim sevdiğim ve başarılı bulduğum bir seri (Klasik Müzik ve Mitoloji Kitapları güzeldir mesela). Ama şu an okuduklarım arasında en iyisi buydu. Hatta okuduğum yüzlerce mitoloji kitabından bu en iyileri arasına girebilir. Görsel ve metin karışık olarak anlatım çok iyi olmuş ve bazen uzun yazılar olsa da asla boğmuyordu. Görseller zaten baştan sonra harika ona diyecek bir şeyim yok. Kitap bir de çok güzel düzenlenmiş. Ana olarak Avrupa, Asya, Afrika, Amerika ve Okyanusya diye bölümlere ayrılmış ama içerisinde birçok kısa bölümler de vardı. Benim en sevdiğim şey de gerçekten çok bilinmeyen mitlerden de bahsedilmesiydi. Mesela sadece Kadın Antikahramanlara ayrılmış bir bölüm vardı. Mitoloji severlerin hatta yeni başlayacakların da bayılacağı bir kitap olduğunu düşünüyorum. Yine Alfa'nın Mitoloji Kitabı ile birlikte okunursa zaten dünya mitolojisinde öğrenilmesi gereken bilindik ne varsa öğrenilir diye düşünüyorum. Çok hoş bir kitap, koleksiyon yapmak için de muazzam.

Als ich dieses Buch in den Händen hielt, fragte ich mich zuerst einmal selbst, welche Mythen und Sagen ich überhaupt kenne. Das Ergebnis davon war übersichtlich, denn neben Siegfried, Baba Jaga und den griechischen Mythen, fielen mir partout nicht mehr ein. Da war mir klar, das ich wohl in dieser Richtung noch eine Menge aufzuholen hatte.



Es war somit klar, das dieses Buch ganz schnell begonnen wurde. Dies lag aber auch Aussehen, denn der blaue Hintergrund in Verbindung mit den kupfernen Buchstaben und Darstellungen lockte mich förmlich an. Ganz besonders, wenn dann auch noch ein wenig Licht darauf fiel. Doch war der Inhalt genauso schön?

Natürlich war innen nicht alles in Kupfer gehalten, aber deswegen nicht weniger ansehnlich. Ab der ersten Seite arbeitete man mit allerhand Illustrationen, welche später durch Gegenstände, Gemälde oder Fotografien ergänzt wurden. Für die Optik war somit ausreichend gesorgt, zumal wieder alles in gestochen scharfen Bilder abgedruckt wurde. Hier und da noch ein Rahmen oder ein Ornament und schon hatte das Auge eine Menge Dinge zu bestaunen.



Doch nicht nur optisch konnte das Buch überzeugen, sondern auch inhaltlich. Dies begann bereits bei der Einführung, welche auf relevante Dinge hinwies und meine Neugier auf bestimmte Kulturkreise nur noch vergrößerte. Dann ging es aber los. Zuerst ging es nach Europa, was man in die europäische Antike, Nordeuropa, Westeuropa, sowie Mittel- und Südeuropa unterteilte. Diese Vorgangsweise wiederholte sich auch bei den anderen Kontinenten, so das nie ein komplettes Gebiet beleuchtet wurde, sondern viele verschiedene.

Auch wenn ich mich sehr auf die Mythen und Sagen aus Asien, Afrika und Australien freute, nahm ich mir natürlich auch nochmal Europa vor. Durch die Aufteilung in verschiedene Gebiete lernte selbst da noch einiges neues. Gerade die osteuropäischen Mythen überraschten mich sehr, da ich nur Baba Jaga von Ihnen kannte. Das Highlight waren aber trotzdem die 3 oben genannten Kontinente da ich hier wirklich auf Neuland stieß.



Egal ob Indien, Ägypten oder die Karibik, dieses Buch verschaffte mir einen kolossalen Einblick in die wichtigsten und bekanntesten Mythen dieser Kreise. Was für viele nach viel Text aussehen dürfte, war allerdings wirklich flott zu lesen, da viele Beschreibungen zu Bildern oder Illustrationen waren. Ebenfalls gab es Seiten wo man Familienstammbäume finden konnte und so sah, wer eigentlich von wem erschaffen wurde. Dabei war der Schreibstil sehr sachlich, weswegen ich nicht alles mit einmal lesen konnte, sondern mir Abschnitt für Abschnitt vornahm. In Verbindung mit den Bildern war es aber trotzdem sehr angenehm.


Wer sich einmal für die Mythen & Sagen aus unserer Welt fasziniert, der dürfte in diesem Band eine wunderschöne Zusammenfassung finden. Ich fand es zwar sehr schade das Gebiete wie die Antarktis oder Russland fehlten, konnte aber damit leben, da ich ansonsten wirklich unglaublich tolle Informationen erhielt. Dafür sorgte nicht nur die tolle Aufteilung nach Kontinenten und ihren Abschnitten, sondern auch die vermehrte Anwendung von Illustrationen oder Bildern. Mittlerweile habe ich schon öfter zum Buch gegriffen, um einige Stellen nachzulesen. Denn ganz ehrlich fürs Einmal-Lesen ist dieses Buch wirklich zu schade.

A beautiful book on mythologies in different cultures and parts of the world. Very nice graphical presentation. The more you read books on mythology you wonder why religions are not included in the same category. The same ideas - floods, angels, spirits and demons and resurrections. Probably because there is a difference between myths that are believed no more and those that are still believed by a lot of people.

This would have been a decent starting point for learning the basics of various cultures’ mythologies if it weren’t for the inordinate amount of errors, both in simple spelling and in facts. It made me suspect of the entire book.

I love the DK publishing books, taking a topic, illustrating it and giving an indepth overview of said topic.
This one is no different focusing on myths and legends from cultures around the world.
This is a fascinating overview and as expected, doesnt cover every single myth and legend but definitely is a good starting point.
My only criticism of these styles of books is they are not one you read cover to cover over the course of a few nights and instead is more reference. Picking up when you have an interest.
Overall a good starting point, and will definitely be reading more of DK publishing books.

In less than 157 pages, this book provides an impressive variety of folklore and myths around the world in an integrated and fascinating approach.

Sadly, Southeast Asia, especially Vietnam's myths are not included in this book.

But I would totally reread it anytime soon.

Asked my friend to get me this book (together with my Percy Jackson collection) during the Big Bad Wolf sale in the Philippines.

I just had to have it. Most of the myths and legends that I have read were all Greek and Roman. I loved that this, too, covered Norse Mythology. I'm still getting the hang of Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman, so this one is a nice reference book for that. Though I have been pretty much distracted by the contemporary/modern/young adult/coming of age lits I've been reading, I hope I could get back to reading this.

No está mal, aunque tiene uno que otro error. Sirve para darse una idea de mitologías con las que uno puede no estar muy familiarizado, como la africana o la de Oceanía. Además, uno puede ver a grandes rasgos las semejanzas entre varias mitologías, cosas como los mitos de la creación, los héroes culturales o que muchas veces hay gemelos teniendo aventuras... algo se traen con los gemelos.

واقعا کتاب جذاب و خوبی بود و برای کسایی که به افسانه ها و اسطوره های جهان علاقه دارن این کتاب رو پیشنهاد میکنم.

Una enciclopedia bastante completa, con ciertos bemoles, pero en eso ahondaré más adelante. La razón por la que tarde tanto en concluirlo, es porque literalmente la tome como objeto de estudio, tomé apuntes y releí algunas secciones.

Hablando del libro, es increíble, posee narraciones breves y justas sobre los seres divinos de muchas mitologías, acompañado de imágenes que ilustran bastante bien las descripciones del mismo. En ese sentido, lo pongo como uno de los mejores libros del área. Sin embargo, es cierto la crítica que muchos lectores le han puesto. Dedica muchas páginas a la mitología greco romano (la más conocida), casi medio libro, trata sobre culturas europeas, el resto es para las de Asia, África, América y Oceanía.

Me quedé con ganas de leer más sobre las otras culturas, quizá lo apropiado hubiera sido dividir esta enciclopedia en dos volúmenes, en donde se detalle más sobre las otras mitologías. Por otro lado, se me hizo curioso como algunas mitologías coincidían en algunos puntos y hasta deidades, no que sean el mismo dios, sino que, eran historias similares, como sus orígenes o sus poderes.

En fin, creo que este libro sirve más como introducción a las mitologías, sobre todo las que no son europeas; lo recomiendo para quienes tienen un interés en dichas historias.

Not sure if it was because I was listening to this book on audible or any other reason but I didn't really enjoy this book as I should have!!
Myths and Legends contains a huge list of short paragraphs about different myth characters, stories, and tools from all over the world. It has the premise of a great amazing adventure book for sure, but the execution made me feel that I am reading an early draft of what a single wikipedia page would have summarized about these topics where if you are interested in the details you should go search for it somewhere else.

I'll be honest that I've learned a new thing or two from the book that I haven't read before else where but even those things I still need to research more and find more details about them before I can really say that I actually know them.

One last thing as I mentioned I was listening to the audio book and not the hard copy so potentially I missed the graphical art pages other readers described in the comments here (potentially that could have helped a bit with my rating to be honest)

When I started reading SOA I realised that Greek mythology is really interesting and I wanted to know more.

This book is not focused on Greek mythology only, it also informs you about myths and legends from other countries and cultures.


I really enjoyed reading it and finding out more about mythology (especially the Greek one).

But I have to say that this book doesn't dive very deep into the stories.

It gives you basic information and knowledge that - if you are familiar with mythology - won't be new to you.

I, as someone who knew barely anything, though it was very informative and I found out many new things.

So in my opinion this is something that's only worth reading if you're unfamiliar with mythologies and legends.
