A delightfully quirky twist on “Deck the Halls” that will be a holiday must-have for Trek fans of all generations! This lighthearted holiday picture book features beloved Star Trek characters and locales from The Original Series, The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine , Voyager, Enterprise, and Discovery .
With playful, pithy text parodying the beloved holiday carol, this book features characters from across the Star Trek Universe and is illustrated in a fresh style that is sure to appeal to children and adult fans alike. Readers young and old will find themselves transported into the Federation alongside Captains Kirk, Picard, Janeway, and more as they celebrate with their respective crews while sporting their best “ugly” sweaters. This ultimate seasonal gift has page after page of Easter-egg filled scenes that include nods to the Gorn, Guinan, Grudge, and more. Resistance to the holiday spirit is futile!
Cute. I don't think much, if any, of it would make sense without a fair amount of Star Trek knowledge. Not sure what age it's meant for, but it will be there when our son is ready for it.
It's kitschy Christmas corniness, but I did enjoy it for its beautiful illustrations (and I'm glad it includes Discovery). A bit of geeky ephemera that put a smile on my face at just the right moment.
I adored this book!! I love Star Trek, so I totally appreciated all the efforts and details that went into the illustrations and story. Basically, an adult Gorn is telling his child how awful the Federation is as the Federation celebrates the holiday season. You get some hilarious references to TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, and Discovery. The only series that I haven’t watched yet is Discovery, so I didn’t fully understand who the characters were, but this did not detract from my enjoyment of the book as they only had two pages dedicated to that series (the rest had about four pages or more).
The illustrations were my favorite part of the experience - so gorgeous and detailed with funny references from the series that most Star Trek fans should understand. If you haven’t watched the series though, you may not enjoy this book or understand the jokes.
This book is now a family favorite and we plan to read it every year :)
The Illustrations are amazing and full of fun easter eggs to catch.
The words are something else. Mostly an overview of every Trek series with vaguely Christmas themed words thrown in. All written in rhyming verse that can be sung to the tune of "Deck the Halls" if you are feeling adventurous.
A loose framing device of The Gorn telling this it's child in order to fuel hate for the federation ties the whole thing together.
It's something that I'll pull out again at Christmas time to show my nerd friends. Ironically it's not something I'd read to a child. I'm not sure they'd get all the references.
*I'd checked out some children's books in an attempt to hit my 200-book goal for 2023, and... well, I'm not going to just NOT read them.*
Cute, though the tune to "Deck the Halls" sometimes seemed a little forced. Though, you know, it's a kids' book, so how critical can I really be? It was a fun read for young Trek fans... but as someone who only knows "Star Trek" in a very casual way, most of the references went over my head. But if you're a Trekkie with a kid, then I'm sure this will be a wonderful read.
"Will pulls out the seat beside her - why's he always sitting down that way?"
It's the perfect Christmas love letter to fans of Trek, capturing both the Sci-Fi and tongue-in-cheek aspects of the universe and to do all that *and* make it rhyme to the melody of "Deck the Halls"? They made it so. The illustrations were gorg too. Jaunty, Trek-y and unique.
Ready for the sequel with the Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds characters! 🖖
This is a super cute little Christmas book for kids (and Trek fans). While the story didn't really flow as well as I wanted it to (since it was supposed to go with the classic Christmas poem, but didn't quite seem to fit) the idea was wonderful and the illustrations were so much fun. I'd love other books by the same author and illustrator, and I'd love to see the inclusion of new series, as well.
This is the absolutely perfect story book for any Star Trek fan wishing to indoctrinate...I mean introduce their young ones about the wonders of the franchise. I'm still humming 'Trek the Halls', and sang most of the book in my head as I read. The illustrations are bang on! No Star Trek collection is complete without this book.
For trying to write a Christmas book that involves all the characters across 6 different TV shows is pretty impressive. However the story is silly and nonsensical. Still it's fun to see everybody decked out for Christmas.
This book is so much fun. Full of incredible Easter eggs. I got a lot of laughs and genuine mirth from this. Excellent stuff, cute art throughout. I'm so glad this exists. My only complaint is that there's no Strange New Worlds content. A must have for any Trekkie.
This book is fabulous! As a Trekie with a small child, I loved it! Cute, good for kids, and enjoyable for me. I'm not familiar with any ST series after Voyager, so I didn't understand the last pages as well as I could have, but I still loved it.
This was entertaining and I loved the illustrations. I'm not sure who the audience was. I think this book would be mostly nonsense for a child. Though, the rhyme may be entertaining to them. So, perhaps it was written for adults.
Enjoyable little Trek through the Star Trek universe with plenty of great animation throughout. My only quibble is the misspelling of Khan as 'Kahn'...
This was a cute holiday tale. I loved how it covered every series and I even tried to read it in the pattern of the song, but it was harder than it looks.
