This was a wonderful tribute to 100 years of The Archibald - Australia’s premier portrait painting prize. Arranged thematically in order of cultural significance, this book was a joy to behold. Each portrait included in this collection contained a full page of information pertaining to the artist, the subject and any vital details surrounding the history of both, including any controversy.
Due to the thematic arrangement of portraits, rather than chronological, the work was riveting. Also unique to this collection is that it contained portraits that were not necessarily the prize winner. Instead portraits were included that were significant for particular artistic style, or subjects who had repeatedly appeared, and even subjects pertinent to universal human experience. There were even some popular inclusions of the Packing Room Prize. Simply gorgeous!
A book to treasure, savour and own: a proud representation of Australian culture.
A good overview of the Archibald, it's winners, it's subjects, but more importantly the place it occupies in the culture of Australia. Full of good pictures with plenty of solid information but still enough brevity to keep it from getting dull. A worthwhile read.
