Kane Lancaster is a decorated SEAL about to be prosecuted for refusing to leave his allies behind, including the brave woman who taught him what love really means.Alix Duran is a courageous doctor who’s risked everything to help the refugees fleeing a brutal regime, a humanitarian who’s been betrayed and abandoned in the clutches of a vicious warlord.A desperate rescue behind enemy lines may be her only salvation, but love might not be enough to survive this mission.
Anna del Mar writes hot, smart romances that soothe the soul, challenge the mind, and satisfy the heart. Her stories focus on strong heroines struggling to find their place in the world and the brave, sexy, kickass, military heroes who defy the limits of their broken bodies to protect the women they love. She is the author of The Asset (Carina Press), the first novel of her Wounded Warrior series and three other novels scheduled for release during 2016.
A Georgetown University graduate, Anna enjoys traveling, hiking, skiing, and the sea. Writing is her addiction, her drug of choice, and what she wants to do all the time. The extraordinary men and women she met during her years as a Navy wife inspire the fabulous heroes and heroines at the center of her stories. When she stays put—which doesn’t happen very often—she lives in Florida with her indulgent husband and two very opinionated cats.
What can I possibly say about Anna del Mar's eighth Alpha Heroes novel, Kane, that I haven't already said about every incredible book in this fabulous series? It's every bit as fabulous as the others, this one featuring Kane Lancaster, brother to Knox, whom we met in book #7. Quite simply, it was another sexy, exciting read and it gets 5 stars from this reader.
If you're new to this series, I highly recommend starting at the beginning, although this novel does work as a standalone, but since so many of the characters in the previous novels play roles in this one, it will certainly explain the Battle Brothers' Elite Team, their mission, their goals, and the brother/sisterhood they've all become.
This novel opens as Kane is attempting to free a doctor, Alix, from a terrorist stronghold in Afghanistan, where she's being held by what I can only describe as possibly the worst bad guy thus far in the series. Kane met Alix on a previous mission and their relationship was incendiary. When our government pulled our military out of Afghanistan, Alix wouldn't leave, because she was dedicated to helping the poor, downtrodden, and injured local population. But Kane cared about her well-being and safety, and he ignored orders, and returned to Afghanistan to rescue her, enlisting the aid of some of the Battle Brothers operatives to do so, and also risking a court-martial, but once he's rescued Alix from the terrorist known as Rockstar, she still won't leave without bringing other locals with her, and suddenly Kane's successful retrieval of Alix is going to get a lot more difficult, complicated, and dangerous, both physically and emotionally.
Told in dual narration, we get to know these complex personalities from the inside out--and character development is one of the things I love best about Ms. del Mar's novels. Kane, a Navy SEAL, isn't much of a talker, keeping most of his thoughts and feelings under wraps, and even though he's used his sources to research Alix while he was stateside, aside from her being a doctor helping victims of a seemingly endless war, it's as if she's a ghost with no history to be found, but Kane is about to discover more about her than he ever could have guessed. As for Alix, she's had a lot to hide and for good reason, but what she's hiding makes protecting her from Rockstar all the more imperative, dangerous and suspenseful, but I won't spoil it for you. I will tell you that these two characters are ones you'll not soon forget.
One more thing I loved about this novel was it's topicality. Ms. del Mar does bring up what a disaster our nation's military retreat from the 20-years we spent in Afghanistan cost, and those we left behind, and even brings up the current situation in Ukraine, and the threat of our further involvement in that conflict and what it might mean, so kudos to her for including so much about the cost of war, both in dollars and in human lives.
Once again, a word of warning--if graphic sex, graphic violence, verbal and physical abuse are triggers for you, this is not the novel you should be reading. However, if you, as I do, enjoy a pulse-pounding, action-packed thriller of a read, filled with drama, intrigue, internal and external conflict, plenty of emotional angst, well-developed characters, as well as one heck of a sexy romance, I think you'll enjoy this novel every bit as much as I did.
I received an advance reader copy of this novel from the author with my deepest thanks, and the opinions stated herein are my own.
Every single time, she does this to me. ~Every. ~Single. ~Time.
I am blown away by the creativity, patriotism and perfection that is this series. When I began this series with Ajax, I was captured by this author’s mastery and love of the written word. Every paragraph and chapter are crafted so well that there isn’t a moment in the read that you are left behind on the journey the characters are on. You feel their successes. You are there with them in their challenges. You cringe and worry about how they will survive all the chaos and drama surrounding them.
My love for this series is obvious (by now) but I do believe this is my most favorite book yet. (Yes, I know I said that about Knox and Karma! But I mean it this time… *wink, wink*)
The connection between Alix and Kane is powerful, and it was exactly what I had hoped for them. I adored how the BB family cared for, and protected, Kane from himself and the dangers facing this couple. I could not have envisioned the twists and turns in this one, but I loved them all!
In my opinion, Ms. del Mar has no equal when it comes to the SEAL/Securities romance world. Her works are a pre-order, one-click buy for me, as I know my money is well spent. I experience a fabulous read, every time. Her love and reverence for the military is palpable and a pleasure to read. Her characters (both male and female) are capable, intelligent, steamy, loyal, and courageous. They stay with you, long after the book is done.
My recommendation is to read this series in order, preferably in a binge, to get the most from these characters and storyline. But be forewarned… it is extremely difficult to stop reading once you begin. I recommend planning your time accordingly. The emotions contained in these pages are addictive, and the “Happy Ever Afters” for these couples made my heart sing. It has been my pleasure to consume this story (and the others in this series), and I look forward to the next one from this talented author.
Each subsequent book in the Alpha Heroes series is better than the last. If you like fast moving, heart stopping, fast paced action mixed in with intense drama and fabulous romance tgen this is a series worth reading. I was hooked on the first page of Kane. A man so determined to go back and rescue his woman that he risks court martial and his career ending makes for an intense reading experience. Kane Lancaster knows what he has to do after being forced by his CO to leave Dr. Alix Durant behind in Afghanistan. He becomes a man on a mission. Alix didn't understand how Kane could walk away without even a goodbye. She thought they had something together. Turns out she was right. Kane's finally back to get her but not before she was hunted for months and finally captured by a brutal terrorist. Escaping is only the first part of their journey. Once back on American soil these two face an equally daunting challenge, her well connected, politically motivated, manipulative and snobbish parents. Along with the Elite team Kane is drafted, against his will, to head a mission that is tasked with capturing the brutal terrorist yet again but this time on American soil. Things move fast and furiously with some surprising twists. Kane and Alix realize they're better together working as a team and loving each other through thick and thin.
Wow! What a ride! Alix's stepmother is a real pain in the neck. I find it atrocious that she uses Alix to give importance to her father's campaign. In contrast, what her father did to his own daughter was far worse than what her stepmother did to her. This is all because he believes it will advance his political ambitions.
It is unofficially known that Kane has been working with a specialized unit, putting his life at risk for others. But did her parents care? Obviously not! Their selfish actions put Alix and Kane at even greater risk. Vivian got exactly what she deserved for the part she played. However, the stepmother and disgusting daddy got off too easily. As with all the books in the series, I struggle to put it down, it is so good that I can't wait to see what happens next. The story is brilliant. I love Alix and Kane together. The narration didn't appeal to me. It wasn't a good representation of the story.
She just keeps getting better and better! I don't understand how someone can have so many different personalities in their head - every character is so unique!
The knowledge and detail which goes into every book is outstanding - and done in such a way that your regular Joe Bloggs can understand all the military terminology. The scene setting is also right on point - I always go into Google Earth to take a look at areas I read about in books and again, spot on with the detail added :)
I'm always so ready for the next book in Anna's brain - as soon as they're listed on Amazon, its in my pre-order list for the kindle and paperback, my library on my kindle and on my shelves is looking might fine!
Each book I find by Anna del Mar has kept me on the literal "edge of my seat". Kane (and the Alpha Heroes series) holds true to form. At the risk of his professional career Kane is on rescue to save a special woman. Kane, with or without his team, fights the odds in foreign lands and back home. His lady is every bit as strong and stubborn. Romance and friendship, funny and serious. Page turning and many unexpected turns. Looking forward the continuing series (and this is a series I love rereading)! Bravo!
Doc and Kane met under some of the most dire of Circumstances. As much as they both were head over heels neither wanted to be the first to declare how they felt. However things change so quickly for them, but 1 thing doesn't change, namely Kane making his way back to rescue Doc who's been taken prisoner by a Lunatic. This is the first book l've read by this author, however l know something else. I Love her writing style & lve got a Lot of her books to catch up on reading. Highly Recommend! Anytime! 👍🌹🇦🇺💜🙏
Wow, another one of Anna’s alphas. Another amazing book in the Alpha Heroes series. Kane is a singular, silent, get-the-job-done SEAL who serves for his country and the rights of all. Facing all sorts of obstacles during his own mission to save Alix, his love, a humanitarian doctor who puts her life in the face of danger for others. BB’s Elite Team is one of the best and made up of alphas who right the wrongs. Waiting for the next instalment of Mac.
Good story. Not my fav of the series. There was a lot of emphasis put on their camp relationship, which must have been in another book, therefore causing love and devotional feelings from the beginning. Alix seems stubborn and at times foolhardy. I do like the action and the drama that shows up as the story moves along. Ita nice to see the Battle Brothers and their women.
I listened to this on audio. Guillaume Debois is the narrator. He does a good job.
Forced to leave her behind, Kane was focused on finding her and if he could bring "The Butcher" in for justice that would be a bonus. Danger, suspense, and unexpected twists will lead Kane and Alix on a journey of discovery of themselves and those around them.
Kane is a silent, get-the-job-done SEAL , but he puts his professional career at risk on rescue to save a special woman. Great romantic suspense with strongly developed characters. Loved the twists and turns in the plot with a action.
Alpha Heroes, Book Eight, this was another a really great adventure, a genuine love story with lots of danger and family problems, it comes right in the end
This book was absolutely AH-MAZING! Typically, when I cannot put a book down, I get aggravated when I have to; however, as I waited to finish this book, I just became more and more hooked! 😍😍
