There's something magical about venturing out into the chill, something deeply comforting about returning to the warmth afterwards. And, of course, something vaguely sinister about the long darkness...
These stories capture all of those aspects of winter. Some are dark, with the kind of cold teeth that'll gnaw off your flesh and turn your bones into crackling, disintegrating lumps of ice. Some are warmer, like sitting by a fireside and draining a cup of something hot and sweet while sleet pounds at the windows from outside.
Enjoy your adventures into winter's depths. We'll make sure you come home safe!

'Chris Durston refuses to be dull ... He doesn't see the point of writing a story if he can't take full advantage of the medium and do things within that medium that can't be done in any other.'
From Devon, in the South West of England, Chris Durston has always wanted to be a writer and only just got around to doing anything about it. Each Little Universe is his debut novel, initially conceived while studying English literature and philosophy at Cardiff University and finally published five years later.
In addition to being a new author, he is the host of Philosophiraga, a podcast about video games and philosophy.
Winter Wonders conjures many emotions, from the coziness of "The Frail Flittermouse", the creepiness of "The Christmas Elf", and the suspense of "Exodus". This anthology is well worth adding to your bookshelf!
[Disclaimer: I have a story, 'Subniveal', in this anthology.]
This isn't the sort of thing I usually read and it isn't the sort of thing I usually get published in (there are nowhere near as many talking animals, for one thing). There's a dark edge to many of the stories, but there's no explicit gore or horror - think shivers, disquiet, unanswered questions. The common theme is winter, snow and ice and cold, from a biosphere a generation or two in the future to an Antarctic research station to fantasy realms to your backyard. (My story, if you're curious? Lemmings.)
A thoroughly enjoyable anthology filled with ghost stories, magical abilities, scary creatures, fear, loss and love. Highly recommended for reading during the winter months.
