The story and the way of showing same-sex relationships was definitely far from typical shounen-ai and is hard to find even in western books or films (that tend to avoid stereotypes and categorisation more often). This story contradicts every comment about manga or anime, and especially the shounen-ai genre, lacking depth or meaning or creativeness.
Its a sweet torture I am ready to take for next 3 volumes too!❤
Dear Hatter is the beginning of the second arc of the story, Ryou is now working in Satoru's store. Meanwhile, Satoru has to present a new hat design for the fashion week in New York and his impostor syndrome will get the best of him, but Ryou's persona becomes the inspiration for a new design as impressive as the one presented in the past show.
I like the pase of this book, its focus on the struggle an artist like Satoru goes through, and the slow burn the MCs have.
I read Canis: Dear Hatter while already being a bit emotionally charged so take what I have to say with a grain of salt.
This manga really touched me in an oddly profound way. The story and characters are quite charming with a lot of the main plot beats making me fight tears. A lot of them hit home personally for me. I sympathize a lot with the pressure Satoru puts himself under when creating and falling out of love with his own passion just to find that one thing that fuels it all again.
The art is also absolutely gorgeous. The linework is very dynamic and the characters incredibly expressive. Zakk has an amazing talent for making characters feel alive and conveying emotions through atmosphere and composition as well.
The ending was a huge heartbreaking cliffhanger so I recommend to get both volumes at the same time. Or you can be like me and immediately get dressed again after finishing volume 1 and go out just to buy volume 2.
I genuinely cannot recommend this enough and will definitely be trying to get my hands on all Canis mangas.
The art is so pretty~ Not much of a fan of hats tho. They all look the same to me. Especially the fedoras.
Dunno what to think about Ryou. In general, he's trying to live but the past still haunts him. Perhaps he gotta confront them and be done with it. I do hope he's strong enough, physically and mentally. Satoru is so dense, I can't believe he din't understand all those come-ons.
I think that Canis: Dear Hatter starts off a little too slow for my taste. The artstyle left me undecided for a long while, I was torn between "meh, not really for me" and "HOLY COW WHAT A STUNNING PANEL". The story felt convoluted and a little boring at first as well, but it definitely paid off to stick with it.
I… I can’t believe this. This is driving me insane; making me scream when irritated and mad at the story so far. I even had teary eyes (at you know where). I finally found a Yoai manga that isn’t making me uncomfortable; the art is just beautiful.
Finally finishing up this series. (Until KUMA licenses The Speaker.) I honestly do not know why it's taken me so long, even after I picked up my reprint edition of Dear Mr. Rain and reread that in preparation for the rest. I just kept getting sucked into other more pressing stories, I guess, as my new book mail arrived and I had other things on my plate.
This volume is back to the nearly 5 stars rating that I had my first time through Dear Mr. Rain; the development is a lot slower and less relationship-heavy than it feels like it should be, but I also just enjoy the storytelling? I don't know. I do think there could be more chemistry building up between the two of them, but I liked the bits at the end of this volume, and the sense that Kutsuna has really been holding back on getting attached to Ryou, because he's had a feeling since he met him that their time together would be temporary.
Kutsuna's the kind of guy who gets attached and stays attached. He couldn't let himself do that with Ryou, at least to the level that he could tell Ryou was wanting.
There's a serious cliffhanger here, with Ryou deciding to stay in New York - after finding out that Harold is still alive - and telling Kutsuna to forget about his ill-timed confession and kiss of the night before. Definitely makes me wonder how it can all be resolved in one more volume, particularly when they haven't had any conversations about their relationship or movement on that front in the two so far.
I liked the focus on Kutsuna's hats, though, and his struggle with defining who he is and what he wants to do. He actually didn't have that much support from his family - even though they clearly love him and do support him, they still talk about his "luck" and "good fortune," like it wasn't incredibly hard work that got him to where he is. But he wonders about that himself...was it just a stroke of luck that he's been able to make a go of it so far? Was that award-winning red hat a fluke that he'll never be able to repeat?
Honestly, his New York Fashion Week show didn't seem that outlandishly amazing, but the thing about his hats is that he's focusing on making wearable, comfortable hats that are for special occasions but aren't meant to be that flashy. Which is sort of hard to portray on the page, I think.
(Sidenote: I don't actually know that much about fashion show logistics, at least when it comes to an accessory designer. Where do the clothes come from? I feel like that's got to be such a big focus of the runway, when you're supposed to just be looking at his hats line...)
Anyway, I don't know if this is going to be an all-time amazing ultimate favorite series, but it is unique and I do really like it. Plus I kept being surprised throughout this volume about how smart and capable and practical Ryou was. He's drawn a bit uhh...Tarzanny (big-eyed and innocent-seeming, a fish out of water), like Alto in Lullaby of the Dawn, so I kept expecting him to be naive, etc.
Instead, he's the one who picks up on things like his coworker's crush on the fabrics guy, while Kutsuna was totally oblivious to it, and is just very put-together and reliable in a lot of unexpected ways. It's nice. He's the one living with and relying on Kutsuna, but in reality he's doing so much for him.
Will be interesting to see if Kutsuna starts flailing a bit after leaving Ryou behind in New York, or if he's able to transition back into his pre-Ryou self-reliant lifestyle.
"You only think that because I'm the closest person in your life right now. Once we go our separate ways, you'll realize it yourself"
This one was even more of an emotional ride. Ryou past catches up to him right when he feels like he can enjoy the life he's living now. Their relationship is even stronger than ever and it just continues to grow even more beautifully. The amount of times I had to take some time off to just rethink everything I read and process the information, omg I was right at the edge of my seat. Ryou and Satoru start to see and feel that they need each other and it becomes complicated when they leave on a trip where Ryou past comes back, putting him in a situation of what to do because he is scared to lose someone so dear and important to him. Canis: Dear Hatter 1 truly leaves you wanting to know what happens after, what happens to them both. A ride of emotional, memorable, and hilarious moments that just grab onto you.
Okay, first of all, Kuma's print quality is no joke! Everything about this release was gorgeous, right down to the font choices. High quality paper, vibrant ink, the dust jacket is a lovely touch, and the binding felt sturdier than anything any of the big manga publishers are putting out. If only more manga got released by publishers that cared this much lmao.
The art in this was GORGEOUS and the story was like of Paradise Kiss and Re:Play had a little gay baby. I'm definitely glad I bought this just off trusting Kuma's taste and printing quality bc it didn't let me down.
What more can I say about this good manga, if you read the first, with this and the next one you finish the arc of Satoru and Ryuu. This is cute, filled with different feelings and at the same time has some sad points that add spice to the plot.
One thing i love of Zakk is it's well-drawn comics. This story surely is beautiful compared to the other one that is tougher and with more mature content. All the series he does are purely amazing, srsly.
First off, the cover art is fabulous! The storyline dives deeper into the "spy/mafia" plotline that is mentioned vaguely in the first volume. Here, the twosome is no longer together, but fate has other plans. And as the two get back in contact, there seems to be trouble brewing, yet that must wait for the next issue.
The Dear mr. Hatter Series will forever have a special place in my heart.
The Question of what we are supposed to do with our lives vs what we want from it. The struggle of every artist, slowly hating their own work just to fall in love with it again and the portrait of the Romance between Katsuna and Ryou, with all the struggle that Homosexual Relationships face. It’s truly too good.
