May 2024 Re-Read using the Horus Heresy Omnibus Project Reading Order Omnibus XIX Through the Neath (https://www.heresyomnibus.com/omnibus...) as part of my Oath of Moment to complete the Horus Heresy series and extras.

Sometimes the Horus Heresy is as subtle as a brick and I love it for that.

Oll and his merry band are following a nightmare breadcrumb trail across time and space as they escape the annhilation of Calth continuing their story from the end of Know No Fear and Athame...

This is just an incredibly fun crash course on the history, metaphysics, and mythology of the Dark Millennia through the incredible life/ lives on Ollanius Personn filled with references and allusions, sometimes cricket bat subtlety, to a world and mythology close to our own and how all those things collide and combine in the Warhammer galaxy.

Abnett balances the ridiculous with the reverent with quintessential Horus Heresy style. I absolutely love it!

All the guys having a job/ title and the one woman being girl did send my eyes into the back of my skull though.

Unmarked is another late addition to Omnibus Ω, continuing directly on from Athame and has the impressive laurel of being less subtle in its mythological references than Feat of Iron, as well as being the most explicit example of modern and recognisable Old Earth in its time and place wanderings that a that are reminiscent Stephen King's The Dark Tower, particularly the opening/ present for the ka-tet in Wizard and Glass. This retrospective omnibus has a distinct lack of Perpetuals so, once again, Oll is doing the heavy lifting.

Through the Horus Heresy Omnibus Project and my own additions, I have currently read 38 Horus Heresy novels (inc. 1 repeat and 4 anthologies), 22 novellas (inc. 2 repeats), 124 short stories/ audio dramas (inc. 10+ repeats), as well as the Macragge's Honour graphic novel, all 17 Primarchs novels, 4 Primarchs short stories/ audio dramas, 3 Characters novels, and 2 Warhammer 40K further reading novels and 1 short story...this run, as well as writing 1 short story myself.

I couldn't be more appreciative of the phenomenal work of the Horus Heresy Omnibus Project, which has made this ridiculous endeavour all the better and has inspired me to create and collated a collection Horus Heresy and Warhammer 40,000 documents and checklists (https://tinyurl.com/ywe8efrf):
Horus Heresy Complete* Checklist [May 2024], Horus Heresy Anthologies & Collections Checklist [May 2024], Horus Heresy Omnibus Project Reading Order Checklist, Omnibus Ω The Flavour Savour (My own essence of the Horus Heresy retrospective omnibus), Horus Heresy Omnibus Project & RatGrrrl Further Reading+ Checklist [Work in Progress May 2024], Horus Heresy and Warhammer 40,000 Fan Works (Focusing of Fan Adaptations and Recordings) [Works in Progress], Chimæra by RatGrrrl (My own Horus Heresy short story) [Rough Draft]

Initial Review:

AuDHD and an insatiable need to keep the Heresy rolling mean this is going get away from me if I don't write something, so this is a quick review of my reading this February 2024 as part of a Heresy Omnibus Project+ complete readthrough of the Horus Heresy series, as part of the Shadow Crusade II The Underworld War Omnibus (https://www.heresyomnibus.com/omnibus...

This is an absolute romp that Abnett was clearly having a lot of fun with this one. I can picture the mischievous grin as he just lets loose with Old Terran Hellenistic myth references, in case you didn't pick it up on the Jason of it all in Know No Fear.

Oll Persson and the Subtle Knife Sliders gang hopping, skipping, and jumping through time, space, memory, and the Warp, while chap who looks good for his age makes a dreadful racket as he name drops with the size and power of Telemachrus landing on Calth, as they are hunted by denizens of the Immaterium.

I love the ridiculous old Terran references of bizarrely spelled takes on historical and mythological figures. It harkens back to the old days when the High Gothic of the Imperium was even more esoteric pig Latin. I also adore the blending of familiar myths with the reality of the galaxy in the mythology of Warhammer 40K. It's turtles and refernces all the way down and it's a lot of fun. Especially when Oll mentions one of the places Jason and Co sailed to.

The descriptions of the 'Trumpeters' are wonderful. I believe they are wither Seekers of Slaanesh or something similar, and to tying them to the mast of the myth of Oll's past is amazing and absolutely absolutely tracks!

The reveals of how long humanity and its predecessor have been tainted by Chaos and the practical application of belief and song are incredible. If I was less tired I would absolutely get sidetracked into ranting about how I've been saying this about faith in the galaxy for a while and it's great to see it confirmed!

I always love some sidequest goodness that is as good if not better than the main story and that's what the Perpetuals are for me. Their strange familiarity and discordance with the rest of the narratives is magic and absolutely adds something wonderful to the series.

The only issue I have is:

"All five of them – two Imperial Army troopers, a labourer, a girl, and a servitor"

Ah, yes. The five genders.

Of course Imperial Army trooper is two gender. You might get a better exchange rate for Astra Militarum.

I wish that so many Black Library authors weren't such clueless fething lads, lads, lads because there are some parts of this series much worse than this that I *can't wait* to get to

The above isn't the worst, but it's indicative of the male focus of the series, even when there's no weak Astartes excuse

I totally get it if the Perpetuals storyline isn't everyone's favourite thing with its singing to help Santa's Sleigh make it out of Central Park and all it's oddly spelled classical references that might read as smug, but come across as merrily self-satisfied to me, and brings in a very different element of tragedy and whimsy that I adore, as it deepens the mythological nature of the 31st Millennium.

Love it!

Definitely my favorite story in this anthology. Loved to see Oll Person again, he is such a unique and intriguing character and putting him in this story/setting was fantastic. Great little addition to Calth.

A direct follow up to the perpetual plot line of "Know No Fear". Atmospheric and haunting story as Ollanius and his fellow travellers cut their way through reality, hunted by something not from our reality.
