What would Henry VIII, Elizabeth 1st, Richard III or King Arthur be like if they lived today? Questions like these inspire Olivia Hayfield's modern-day retellings of historical tales.

Olivia is in fact like her characters – a reimagined version of the truth. Olivia Hayfield is the pseudonym of author and editor Sue Copsey. Olivia is more glamorous and fair bit younger than children's writer Sue, and her behaviour is far worse.

Sue has two children and a husband; Olivia probably has lovers and a pedigree cat.
Olivia spends most of her time in London, while Sue is usually in Auckland, New Zealand.

4.5 rounded up

Some of these characters are indeed notorious including the Snow family; there is father Teddy a famous actor and mother Belle a world renowned singer. They have five children which includes two sons Elfred and River and a daughter Emma (Emerald but known as Emma) who wants to be a writer and has thoughts she probably shouldn’t about Rowan Bosworth. He is deep, dark, clever, complicated and inscrutable with tragedy that dogs him. Then there is affable but somewhat parsimonious Henry Theodore, surely a better fit for Emma? One Valentine’s Day a terrible event tears the Snow family apart and Emma embarks on a mission to discover the truth, no matter how bad it might turn out to be.

Absolutely fabulous! A stellar novel which is superbly entertaining from beginning to end.
It is so clever with some of the subtle and funny nods to history which makes me chuckle, very well played! This has a bit of everything with sex, drugs, love and some rock ‘n’ roll. There’s a darker element too with a murder mystery lying at the heart of it with several gut punching acts of betrayal. Oh yes, there’s also a “battle“ for a woman’s heart, it’s all here in spades.

The characterisation is masterful, there are a lot of characters but it doesn’t matter as they’re all so colourful they jump off the pages. There’s some to love (Rowan, I’ll marry you if Emma doesn’t!) and some to hate! In addition there’s a great ending and some terrific settings especially in Yorkshire but as a Yorkie I guess I would say that!

Overall, a highly creative novel loosely based on the mystery of the Princes in the Tower and the Wars of the Roses. You don’t have to know the story but it helps to pick up the witty allusions to history but the author does give an excellent résumé at the end. Highly recommended.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Little Brown Book Group for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

Notorious by Olivia Hayfield. (2022).

Everyone has heard of the famous Snows. Mother is Belle, singer. Father is Teddy, actor and party animal. Children: Emma, Pearl, Crystal, Elfred and River. Emma wants only three things: be a writer, have a cat, and never think about the dark, handsome and tragic Rowan Bosworth again. She certainly shouldn't love him, especially when she's never sure if he even likes her or if she's just a pawn in one of his twisted games. Then a terrible event occurs which rips the Snow family apart. Emma is determined to uncover the truth and to do so she is forced to delve into the dark underbelly of her celebrity family. She also has to decide to think with her heart or her head...

I was intrigued by the synopsis of this one and I knew for sure I was going to read it when I saw that it is loosely based on the unsolved mystery of 'the Princes in the Tower' and Richard III. After reading and enjoying Philippa Gregory's book series 'The Plantagenet and Tudor novels', I did a bit of curiosity research and thus I understood and appreciated quite a few references in this novel. I thought this was a clever modern retelling and I found it to be an entertaining read. Readers will appreciate the list of characters at the beginning that compares the characters to their historical counterparts. Mixing the elements of fame, love, betrayals and secrets certainly makes this one an engrossing and compelling read.
Overall: happily recommend this one for those looking for an engaging mystery story.

Emma Snow, daughter of famous actor; Teddy and beautiful rockstar; Belle, has always been followed by the limelight, making her job in journalism slightly more complicated. As a child Emma became infatuated with her father’s prodigy, mysterious screenplay writer turned teacher; Rowan, unfortunately it seemed the affection was one sided. In walks perfect, proper Henry, with money to his name and the offer to fill all of Emma’s desires.

Having not heard from Rowan in what felt like years, Emma is completely dumbfounded when she receives a call from him on Valentines Day, and even more shocked to find out why…
Her brothers are missing.

This book had me hooked from page one! Notorious is a completely compelling mystery, loosely based on historical figures and a unsolved crime. However, there is so much more to this drama filled story than meets the eye. From chapter one onwards it feels like a constant battle between Henry and Rowan, who will win Emma’s heart? (it felt like team Jacob vs team Edward and I loved every second of it!)

Each character was so uniquely described in this novel, you could immediately feel connections with every individual person. Soon discovering characters you will love, and characters you will love to hate. As for the mystery part of this novel, I was beyond captivated. Notorious grabs you with a rollercoaster of twists and turns, and just when you think you have it all figured out in comes another surprise.

I highly recommend this novel by Olivia Hayfield (@suecopseyauthor ). I could list 1000 reasons why you should read this novel, but then I’d be spoiling the story 😉
I am completely in awe of this authors work and can honestly say I’m already planning on reading her others ASAP!

Another great read from Olivia Hayfield. Very very rich gorgeous people behaving very badly.
Missing boys, a body in a car park, fox hunting, family secrets, Shakespeare. There's a bit of everything. A man with a crooked back, a woman who loves him, and his nemesis, Henry. Great characterisation, the scenery is stunning, the book a heap of fun, loads of sly little historical facts. Couldn't put it down.

Thank you Hachette for sending us a copy to read and review.
A modern retelling of the historic unsolved mystery that is the Princes in the Tower and the scandalous Richard III.
A famous family.
Meet the Snows.
Belle, is the lead singer for the infamous band, Woodville.
Teddy, is world renowned actor and party boy.
They have five children.
Emma just wants to be a writer and stop getting all giggly over Rowan Bosworth.
He’s trouble and has a hell of a past.
But she’s not sure how he feels.
Then a tragic event happens and rips the family apart.
Emma soon discovers the truth behind the family and finds out there’s more to the legendary name of Snow.
Olivia is known for masterfully taking famous historical events and figures and writing a tale set in the now.
This is third one of hers I have read and I absolutely, like the others, loved it.
If you know your history then you know the story but the author does a remarkable job of bringing the scandal into modern times and putting her own spin on it.
There’s a great “historical note” in the back of the book that gives the real story and for historians or for those that want to be in the know it’s a clever little guide.
It’s entertaining, mysterious, gripping, fun, juicy, dramatic and very addictive.
Can’t wait to see what ancient times are written about next from Olivia.

I was very lucky to receive a copy of this from the author, the publisher and Tandem collective. I got to take part in a Readalong with a group of lovely ladies, where we would chat about the book behind the scenes.

This book was brilliant, I could not put it down, honestly I pretty much devoured the whole thing in one day.

I loved the writing, I loved the storyline, I loved the setting but most of all I really loved the characters (except Lady Mad and Henry)

I was definitely team Rowan throughout this whole book, he has had a torturous past and still struggles with so much of it but I just had this feeling that there was so much more to him. I feel like he was different around Emma and let her in as much as he could though still managing to keep her at arms length. This man really has lost everything he has ever loved and it’s no wonder he wants to just shut himself off to the world.

I really didn’t like Henry for Emma, I found him so patronising and felt she could do so much better than him. I always thought that there was a bit of a dark side to him that he tried to keep hidden. His mother is a total b*tch and I hated how she looked down at Emma, she was childish in her pursuit of always trying to one up Emma, she annoyed the life out of me which I suppose means she played her part well.

Belle I really enjoyed, she was quirky and one of a kind and with everything that went on in her life she really proved to be a very strong woman.

I can’t really say too much more as I don’t want to spoil the actual storyline. All I can say is this book has some serious twists and turns and you will be shocked! You will probably scream at the book in frustration haha.

I absolutely recommend that you pick this book up, it’s utterly brilliant ❤️

Olivia Hayfield has created an absolute page-turner with her latest book, romance and mystery galore!

The Snows are a well-known celebrity family, with Teddy an actor and Belle a singer. Glitz and glamour is part of their lives and that of their children - Emma, Crystal and Pearl and their two younger brothers Elfred and River.

Notorious predominately follows Emma’s life, briefly as a teen, then in her 20’s as she navigates life as a journalist and the two men she loves. Then tragedy hits and life as the Snow family knows it, is never the same again

Olivia Hayfield has written an engaging story that had me guessing right till the end! I loved reading about Emma’s life, her dreams and ideals, with her teen-crush, the moody and mysterious Rowan never far from her thoughts. Then she meets Henry, affable and attractive and also a journalist, these two get along wonderfully well with Henry offering Emma a happy and settled life. Who will win Emma’s heart? And will her heart ever be happy again after a major tragedy unfolds?

Set in the wilds of Yorkshire and the city life in London, Notorious will have you hooked from the first page with the life of the Snow family and their mysteries and romance keeping you guessing till the very end!

What a fabulous ride!

I loved the characters (or loved to hate!) The mystery, the love, the family dynamics, the twists and turns... and Rowan, I loved Rowan!

Also immensely enjoyed the small nods to some of my favourite classics 👌

My first by this author, definitely won't be my last!

The ending slightly ruined what could have been a 5 star book. This was a lot of fun and I enjoyed the thriller aspect of it. However, the rushed nature of the reveals made it feel like the author had to hit a certain page count and not go over it. Alas, it was still a worthwhile read.

Emma Snow is the eldest of five, she is introverted, intelligent and passionate about the environment. She also happens to be the daughter of two celebrities, think Stevie Nicks and Colin Farrell, making her family life chaotic and subject to the opinion of most of the British public.
As a girl, Emma develops an intense crush on her fathers protege, Rowan, a dark and troubled young man. Rowan keeps Emma at arms distance but she struggles to move past her feelings for him.
As Emma's career as a writer develops, so does her relationship with a journalist who is everything Rowan is not; loving, attentive and reliable. The impending fairytale ending is interrupted by the mysterious disappearance of Emma's two young brothers. Her quest for the truth will uncover her family's chequered past and jeopardise everything she holds dear.
This story is gripping and unexpected with an equal balance of heartwarming and heartbreaking moments and I loved every second of it.

WOW! I loved this book so much! In my top 5 for the year so far. (out of over 200 books)
A stunningly beautiful, heartwrenching and deeply emotional read. I couldn't put it down and I read it in a day.

I felt emotionally invested in these characters. Olivia really brought them to life for me, making them very close to how I'd imagine the royals being like in modern times.

I really enjoyed Wife After Wife & Sister to Sister as well and I thought after Sister to Sister that the author couldn't possibly write a book I'd enjoy more, but I was obviously wrong. Notorious is her best so far. It left me an emotional, sobbing mess in parts and smiling from ear to ear in others.

5 stars from me. I'll be waiting very impatiently for her next book.

Olivia Hayfield delivers on her third modernisation of Plantagenet / Tudor England.

To avoid spoilers I will keep this review general.

Told from the perspective of young journalist, Emma Snow (a modern version of Elizabeth of York), Notorious is a thriller / rom-com.

Emma navigates love interests in Rowan Bosworth (Richard III) and Henry Theodore (Henry Tudor) while investigating what happened to her two missing siblings.

Once again, Ms Hayfield has written a tale that keeps a reader engaged, wanting to follow each of the breadcrumbs she has laid and follow each new path that is hinted at.

As a reader I wanted to reach the end to find out what has happened while also wanting to savour each page and the tale to never end.

Ms Hayfield has taken a few liberties, explained in the historical notes at the end, to keep readers on their toes. Don’t expect an ending you know.

Overall an easy, fun read that you will struggle to put down.

Now for the wait for her next book!

I really enjoyed 'Notorious' by Olivia Hayfield. 'Notorious' is the third book by Hayfield and this is the first one I've read. I really liked the modern twist on Richard the Third and the Tudor history. I'm not clued up on this part of history so, the final revelation of what happened to the two boys may have been obvious to other readers. I was shocked, however, and felt the resolution came out of nowhere as readers are lead to believe it is either love interest of Emma Snow. I felt like 'Notorious' is very similar to 'Daisy Jones and the Six' by Taylor Jenkins Reid which I love. Belle Snow is a famous Worldwide singer off travelling while her actor husband Teddy engages in 'debauchery', looking after his protégé Rowan a family friend and, Teddy and Belle's five children are somewhat left to their own devices. I liked the modern twist to this story and I honestly could not put this book down. There were a lot of literary references to; Pemberley, Mr Bingley and Heathcliff and, sometimes slightly repetitive but, it was an easy and captivating read. There are a lot of different threads that evidently follow true events of history (there is a small excerpt at the back discussing the historical facts and how Hayfield's characters lend themselves to the original people in Tudor England).
Initially follows the story of Emerald or Emma Snow as she tries to make a name for herself in the journalism World without relying on the fame of her influential parents. Emma's two rapscalion brothers, Frederick and Rivers (or Freddy and Riv as they are affectionately known) mysteriously disappear. It takes over one year to find out what happened to her brothers with final closure at the end. An enjoyable read, however, often with difficult themes.

Firstly, HUGE thank you to Tandem Collective Global, Hachette NZ and Sue Copsey for inviting me to be a part of this Notorious readalong and sending me the book. I was impressed by this book and so thankful to receive a copy!

Everyone has heard of the Snows. Belle, world-famous singer of Woodville fame. Her husband Teddy, acclaimed actor. Their children: Emma, Pearl, Crystal, Elfred and River. Emma Snow wants three things in the world: to become a writer, own a cat, and never think about Rowan Bosworth again. Darkly handsome with a tragic past. This book is loosely based on one of history's greatest unsolved mysteries - the Princes in the Tower - and the royal enigma that was Richard III.

This was so good! I was a little late starting the readalong but once I got into it I didn’t want to put it down! I read the second half if it in one day and was absolutely hooked. This book has everything. Mystery. Romance. Family. Scenic locations. Historical references. A range of great characters. And it was so well written which made it easy to read. This book had me asking so many questions, considering the suitability of the relationships and wanting to research the historical legend this was based on.

The love triangle situation was very well done! I had reservations about both Henry and Rowan throughout but I’m glad with the way it turned out! One of my top books of 2022 so far.

I’ve always been fascinated with the Wars of the Roses, Richard III, and the princes in the tower. I was sceptical about this modern retelling, especially with the novel’s cover and the title.

However, I was pleasantly surprised. I got totally absorbed in the story and the characters very quickly. Yes, it’s light, but it’s pacy, with the mystery of the boys’ disappearance being the main focus, along with the romantic entanglements of Emma aka (Elizabeth of York), with her beau Henry (Henry Tudor), and her fascinating family friend, the tortured soul Rowan (Richard III).

Perfect novel for when you feel like something entertaining, and not too cerebral. Suitable for young adults/ senior college too. 4.5 stars.

Loved this book, I did not previously know any of the actual history and although I wanted to I deliberately did not Google it halfway through the book; I wanted to see how the story ended then learn about the actual historical story. Some excellent characters in this story and the plot line was very fascinating, such a clever book. Would recommend!

Description 🔖

The Snows are a family that everyone has heard of. Belle is a world famous singer, her husband Teddy is a serious actor by day and a wild party animal by night and their children Emma, Pearl, Crystal, Elfred and River are dragged along for the ride.

Emma doesn’t buy into fame like her parents. All she wants from life is to be a successful writer, own a cat and to steer well clear from family friend; Rowan Bosworth. Rowan is darkly handsome and carries with him some equally dark baggage from his past. Emma never knows where she stands with him. Does he want her or does he want to push her away forever?

One Valentine’s Day a tragic event rips through the Snow family, taking Rowan and other bystanders down with them. As an investigative journalist, Emma is determined to find out the truth, even if it means unearthing all of her family’s dirty secrets.

General Thoughts 🤔

I went into this one knowing absolutely nothing about it, so when I started and saw that it was loosely based on Richard III and The Princes in the Tower mystery, I was pleasantly surprised and was excited to dive in to the story. I was happy that it certainly was a “loose” connection and I would say the story gives the odd nod here and there to the historical events which was nice. I was glad it wasn’t a straight modern day re-write.

The story itself was easy to follow but very entertaining. There was a bit of everything thrown in there; romance, sex, drugs, rock n roll, elitism, celebrities and all of it made for an exciting read. Of course I love having a mystery to solve, so that aspect of the book definitely kept me engaged.

Characters 👫👭👬

There were quite a lot of characters in the story but I didn’t struggle to keep track of who was who which is something I have been known to complain about. I had some firm favourites and some characters I’d love to meet in real life and give them what for.

Firstly, I loved Emma. She wasn’t perfect by any means and made some questionable decisions, but her heart was in the right place. It was interesting to see her childhood crush on Rowan turn into something a lot deeper and more serious and heartbreaking to see it crumble time and time again and her feelings get stomped all over. However, this didn’t mean I didn’t like Rowan. In fact I really liked Rowan and I had a feeling all through the book that there was a softer side to him that was waiting to come out.

Henry on the other hand, I could not get on board with. He gave me psycho vibes from the time he came into Emma’s life. His obsession with tidiness; weird. His insistence that he knew what was best for Emma’s career and financial decisions; super weird. His relationship with his awful mother; urgh. The red flags were waving high.

Writing Style ✍️

I haven’t read an Olivia Hayfield book before so I didn’t know what to expect from her writing. I enjoyed her tone and I particularly liked her pacing. At times, the story skipped forward significant chunks of time and I was appreciative of it as it never felt like there was filler or supplementary bits of story to move from one event to the next.

It has taken me a while to finish this book but that’s on me and my reading slump, nothing at all to do with the book or the writing. In fact it was good that I was able to put this book down and come back to it multiple times without having to re-read sections or get my head back into the characters and the story.

Conclusion & Scoring 🎖

Everything about this book felt juicy and entertaining; the story was full of drama but also intrigue and mystery and the characters were colourful, each one of them I either loved or loved to hate. The nod to the historical story of Richard III was a nice touch, but I also liked that it wasn’t a pre-requisite to know everything about that time in history to understand the loose connections. If you’re a fan of books with family drama, secrets and dark pasts then you will enjoy Notorious as much as I did.

According to the blurb, the author’s books are modern day retelling of historical tales, speculations about what certain historical figures would be like today. Notorious is loosely based —and I mean very loosely—on the story of Richard III and the princes in the tower. It is told from the POV of Emma, the eldest daughter of Teddy Snow—a world famous actor and party animal and his wife Belle, lead singer with Woodville. She has two younger sisters and two even younger brothers, Elfred and River. The story opens at Middleham School where Teddy, an alumnus, performs a modern day version of A Midsummer’s Night Dream written by a 17-year-old student Rowan Bosworth. The play is a success and Teddy and his manager-impresario, Neville Warwick, draw Rowan into their circle. Teddy becomes like a father to Rowan, who grew up with an abusive one. Young Emma is drawn to the dark brooding Rowan.
Emma becomes a journalist and meets the handsome, lovable uncomplicated Henry. Although they intend to marry, his mother Lady Madeleine Beauregard, presents an obstacle. Anyway, Emma can’t stop thinking of Rowan even though he marries Warwick’s sickly daughter Abigail. When the latter dies, it turns out Rowan does have strong feelings for Emma but tells her she is better off with Henry because he is too f—d up.
When Emma’s two brother’s disappear, people suspect Rowan—their teacher at Middleham—-everyone except Emma and Belle. There are several twists in the end involving Rowan’s possible relationship with the Snow family
If as a Ricardian, this storyline sounds appealing, forget it. Rowan’s portrayal is one dimensional—dark and brooding. I found Emma’s environmental activism insufferable and downright silly when she wanted to advocate for urban rats as being misunderstood. The anti-fox hunting theme did play a part in solving the mystery, however. Although the book had some points in its favor, in the end it was a long drawn out uninteresting romance. If you want to read an enjoyable updated (well, to the 1930’s) telling of the story, try Richard Unwin’s Death at Hagminster .

What a treat! 'Bad boy' and tortured soul Rowan Bosworth is an enigma. Why won't he let the gorgeous Emma Snow get too close? What secrets is he keeping? Was he involved in the disappearance of Emma's two young brothers? This is a contemporary, twisty turny take on the history of Richard the Third, brief and ill-fated King of England, and it was enormous fun. I loved all the historical Easter eggs and the modern cultural ones as well. With a good dose of romance thrown in too I was well entertained. Recommended.

This was a very fun read, loosely based on the story of Richard the third and the Princes in the tower

It took me a little while to settle with this one, and figure out who all the characters where but once I did I flew through this. It didn't answer any questions about the Princes but then it wasn't supposed to. It was a fun, light and entertaining read
