When it looked like life had finally settled down for The Shire, the young adults went on a scavenging mission nearby.
It definitely wasn't safe out there yet.
They learned just how evil some people can become, and how quickly—once there's no fear of consequences for breaking the law, when they encounter the most despicable people yet.
Can they survive this, or is this the end of the road for Jazlyn, Cole, and their young friends?
Ok - in this ALL 5 STAR SERIES thus far - this is the 1st 4 Star rating I’ve had to give. In testing my patience … perhaps ALL reader’s patience, and solely for that … it may even be a 3&1/2 Star book in reality. Everything is great about this story except 1 thing. Ok, 2. One major, and 1 pretty minor. The MAJOR issue with this story is — there is ZERO ACTION from about 53% of the way through (before which it’s pretty consist), until the 83% point. !?!?!!? (That’s about 118 pages … fyi…) I don’t want to share WHY, as in what they were busy - or not so busy doing, as that would certainly be a spoiler. But in dragging out what is going on … I guess it REALLY makes it “feel like we are there with them.” Right?? Lol Yet the problem with this is…. My own mundane daily life is more exciting than reading these page-after-page’s were. Just waaaiitinggg for the absolutely inevitable to occur. Eventually. At some point. Oh! And there are even a couple of (pointless, false) “tease” chapter headings, toward the far end of those 100+ pages … to “really get your hopes up - that YES! This, THIS is the chapter, at long last, where it’s gonna FINALLY happen!!!….” But … Nope. ? For example, a heading such as, “Mystery Finally Solved!” Would lead one to believe that, in fact, this chapter would have a focus - or at least touch upon - the subject cited in the chapter heading, yes?? Well. In this case, you’d be wrong. It’s not even mentioned. Huh. Just adding fuel to the frustration fire. So … extremely anemic “action” occurrence at that 83% mark. Which is also over far too quickly. To have the action totally disappear again, & the aggravated waiting return to stay … until almost the end of the book. By then, though it is an interesting little battle - there was zero anticipation leading up to it (any ability to feel that deliciously enjoyable sensation, had been bled outta me loooongg ago, by 1st having to sustain the emotional state for such a long time with no resolution, and with no action/resolution came the natural boredom, maybe somewhere around the 69% mark… ). It was just a CRAZY amount of space within a book, y’all, with a whole lotta nothin’ goin’ on. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything quite like it before?? I have no idea who, how many “who’s” told the authors this was a solid read with no edits required. ?? I’m honestly shocked. (Not a spoiler, below, at all if you’ve read previous books…….) The other, much lesser in magnitude but still important area of note — is one scene where the authors have Mathew visiting the classic car showroom with others. They state it’s, “Mathew’s 1st time hearing of the classic car garage.” And he’s all excited about it; in awe of the vehicles. Now we ALL KNOW don’t we …. that this just isn’t at the case in any shape or form? In fact, Mathew & this garage area, plus a few other key players, are central to a pivotal moment within the series storyline, altering the arch of the rest of this entire world. Kinda important little nugget you’d *think* at least 1 author, a beta reader, editor, heck - a spouse, or SOMEONE would recall prior to publishing … Yk?? Also, in the end, it seems like there is this one scout group which is just …. forgotten about. ?? Not mentioned anymore?? I am left wondering what happened to them? Where they went? Why no one but me is worried for them?? Odd…. Overall … it is … meh. The best part about the story is all the YA romance stuff. Witnessing the relationships of the young adults change, grow, & develop. But — that’s not what this book is supposed to primarily be about, now is it ..?? Nor a horse training manual. It’s just a bummer to leave our group - JAKE’S group - off here, on such a bummer. After 3 phenomenal books prior. Well … let us see what’s ahead, who we meet. What the author’s have cooked up for us. And then catch up with our Shire, Willow, etc friends again in the future…. (Hopefully Mathew will have his memory problems sorted by then! Lol ;) On to … Minnesota is it?? Pullin’ out my winter long-johns for the ride……
I'm trying really hard to power through this series, I really am. For the first three books, I kinda was giving this series and all its structural issues a pass because it's just like a hundred other "EOTWAWKI"/Prepper fantasy books, most of which I generally enjoy reading. However, the issues are starting to pile up and I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to make it to the end, because the story is absolutely pulled from any number of other places. Biker gangs, then invaders from an enemy country, now we're at cannibals. I expect aliens, zombies, or evil US Government forces aren't far off. But, let me go into a bit of detail here, so you understand the issues.
1. The absolutely convenient and fantasy-land nature of the plot: If they mention needing something at their home base, the survivors randomly drive out in search of things, and just "randomly" run RIGHT into what they need. A Veterinarian is needed? The very next group of people they run into, the first guy they talk to is going to be a Veterinarian. A doctor? Next group, "I'm a doctor!!" What? They need some camping equipment? Oh look, here's an outdoors sporting goods store that's conveniently crammed full of everything we need over a month after the event, and nobody has gotten around to taking or looting anything! Quick, let's grab all these cases of MREs, equipment, propane tanks that nobody took, and on, and on. Come on, already. It's so contrived, it's really starting to get annoying.
2. Another issue: virtually EVERYone they run into who is (for some reason) immediately friendly is always a Veteran, or Law Enforcement (or prior LEO). Right away, they get asked to join the group, and then after that, they're just another background character. At this point, there are something like forty plus characters and I just don't care enough to keep most of them straight, since they're all written in the same "voice".
3. The completely unrealistic characters: So, this large group of survivors of this EMP disaster is comprised of a core group, to which a bunch of characters have been added as they keep just conveniently running into people with the skillsets they need, but the issue is that there isn't so much as a single independent thinker or contrarian in the bunch. The leader of the group is like "We need to go KILL these bad guys!" and literally every single person is just like "Yeah, we have to do that!" Really? Not a single person raises their hands like "I'm sorry, I have a few questions...."? It's just "The entire group is immediately onboard with whatever the leaders, made up of a few characters who were the original group from Book 1 decide we have to do." No argument, no disagreement, just all one voice. It's really contrived, and getting worse and more noticeable as the cast gets bigger with each book, and each group they find.
4. The way new characters are introduced: Every time they run into a stranger, or a wandering, starving family or group, our main characters are like "Who are you?" and the other people just immediately start volunteering names, professions, and some trite expository dialogue. I am not kidding. One scene in this book where the heroes are eating lunch in a parking lot as they're on their way to fight the cannibals, some rando family wanders up, starving, and hoping to eat some of the food they have. "Who are you?" "I'm Steve, a doctor, and this is my wife, who was a bartender, who also assisted me in surgeries from time to time! And this is our daughter Jenny who loves horses and wants to learn to be a gardener! We were hiding in our house from the bad guys who were robbing our neighborhood, and we're here now! Anyway, can we join?" And the crew are like "OH MAN! We totally needed a doctor, let me ask the leaders, but you're totally in!" This exact scene has happened several times throughout all four of these books so far. It's just so....tired. Now see, a good author could actually make use of this in later books where somebody walks up to these morons and pretends to be someone useful (or actually has useful skills, but is a bad guy) and could gain access to the homestead and reveal their location to a bad guy group, now THAT would be awesome to read. Hint, hint Loren.
5. The writing: Ok, so. I have been able to handle the really amateurish writing, where entire paragraphs are constructed of short, choppy sentences, but it's getting really old. Here's an example:
"Everyone began to bump fists and pound backs. Testosterone spiked in all the men. Even Cole was excited to become a Jeger...It sounded cool to be a Jeger."
See what I mean? It's written like someone's writing a book report in grade school, and they aren't great at writing so they're doing their best. It's becoming fairly grating, especially since the first book really seemed to have better writing than this one, and the author seems like he's just churning these out at this point.
HONORABLE MENTION: Ok, ok, ok, I absolutely had to add this. I'm going to keep this as generic and non-spoilery as possible, but bear with me. So, there are these two girls, both of whom were best friends. Ruth and her best friend Taylor. They are written to be pretty trashy in the first couple of books. They get better up to this point, but the story had made it pretty clear that there were issues with their continued existence. Ruth really wants to be with Cole (the son of the main hero from the first book), but can't because Cole is in love already with another girl. Taylor is in love with Mathew (Ruth's cousin). Problem is, one of the core leaders of the original group has a daughter who's written to be of "better stock" than Taylor, ie: she's not trailer trash. So, clearly, Ruth and Taylor have to go, so in a SUPER quick scene in this book, they are grabbed and killed off pretty much immediately. Like....what? It's pretty clear that the author had no idea how to write himself out of this plot tangle, so he just decided "These two gotta go and then everyone will be happy with the people I WANT them to be with". It's absolutely insane, and tremendously bad writing, incidentally.
I don't know, man. I'm halfway through this book, and am hoping this thing gets back on track really fast. At this point I'm starting to wonder if my time wouldn't be better spent just rereading some of the other authors in this genre who do...well, everything better. Unfortunate.

I won't spoil the end of the series for anyone, though the kids have stepped up in their leadership roles, they are young. They do have some good basics to learn from though and they have someone looking over their shoulder during trying times. The cannibals' was a new twist in any book that I have read, and a good one, as it could truly happen with the loss of the supply chain to deliver food. Hope there is another couple of books to this series.
This is a great series. The characters are believable and I enjoy watching the maturity and growth of the younger members of the group. The Author is not afraid to End old characters of the book to make it new and Interesting as time goes by. The author also finds new challenges that are interesting and imaginative in a dystopian book. The characters of will written and imaginative. I really enjoyed this book. I'm only sad because it ended.
I found the worst thing about the first 3 books was the title, the story was very good and very believable. Then we come to this book which I found to be a struggle. The story takes a less believable turn which alone does not ruin this book, but I feel the good material was used up in the first 3 books. This edition was just a stretch too far for me. But thank you for the first 3 books great read.
I didn't enjoy it as much as the previous books in this series. There were too many new characters without any personality, just names at various places that were given Tolkien names, so it wasn't easy to even know where they were, or what group that were with. They seem to have a never ending supply of flour, since they make, and give away huge numbers of pizza and loaves of bread. Just a few of the things I found disappointing in this book.
Some may think the addition of the cannibals to the story is a bit far fetched, but when the supply train dries up, people will resort to anything to survive. The "mystic" aspect that was added only shows how much people will go to in order to rationalize doing foul things.
Loved this book as well as the ones before it. Stayed up way too late as I just couldn't stop reading. Read about this close knit group, who call themselves the Federation, and fight groups of cannibals intent on killing them, as they also work to make a better life for them and their families. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
This book fell way short of anything good. I felt I was reading a child's writing. I can't help but think a different person wrote it than the first 3 books. Uh it wasn't very well written or interesting. It was more bragging about killing and naming horses because that's what's important. Read it if you must, but make sure it was free or you're wasting your money.
Ok several of the names were silly. Odd discrepancies like what was Gryf's Doctorate when it was vaguely mentioned after he told everyone he was an electrician. And the flying dead was odd abd some of the dialog in this last book was odd. But I still liked it a lot.
Really enjoyed reading this series and would definitely recommend it . This book follows the groups as they hunt down a group of cannibals. A few people are lost along the way . Great ending to the series .
These books scare me but give me great hope for the continuation of our country, if the worst were to happen. I miss Jake and Samantha. Cole and Jaclyn are becoming leaders their parents can be proud of. Can't wait for the next boo.
I enjoyed following the October fall. I found the whole series excellent and entertaining. I had a hard time putting the book down to sleep at night.. I look forward to !ore adventures of Cole and Jaz.
I enjoyed reading the four book series, but did not enjoy the detailed information of relationships throughout the story. I personally look for problem solving after the SHTF not relationships.
It’s hard putting these books down! They are a excellent read with great character development and personality! Looking forward to the rest of the series and the other series that will tie into this!
This book shows the power of hard work for Cole. Plenty of action and interesting characters. Well written and thought out series. Waiting for the next edition.
Characters I could relate to. Even tugged at the heart strings. I even got my wife to start the series. She had never read these types of books before. I have read many of these types of books and this was one of the best.
Fun book, but the bad guys shoot as bad as stormtroopers
Overall a fun book to read. No really helpful tips for surviving an apocalyptic event, and the bad guys can't shoot straight, so storming a defended location is super easy for the heroes.
This book was disappointing. I gave it 3 stars because of the writer's imagination and ability to come up with the tale. The lack of proper grammar is very bothersome. Missing words and misuse of I, me, my, and myself is like chalk on a blackboard.
I understand literary license. In narrative, or speech by characters, it is acceptable to use improper grammar. However, the author should proofread a bit more closely. Either that or get a different editor.
I have read all of the books in the October Fall series through this one. The creativity at the start of the series was very entertaining. But, I don't think I can take another. The insertion of dead characters as apparent guardian angels is a bit much. Still, I wish I could come up with something so fantastic. Maybe I, too, could write a novel.
With so many characters, it is noteworthy that these authors somehow keep readers engaged and able to remember who is who. The various neighborhoods help.
This book shows what can happen And did happen after an EMP event. It shows how young people can grow and take on responsibility and actually Thrive in a post apocalyptic world.
I really enjoyed this series. I didn't want people to die. Really got me thinking of preparation if something where to happen. I read all four books in about 6 days. I liked the content and the different characters I was rooting for.
Even though I miss Jack and Samantha, it was a very good book. Hope this group shows up in the following books. Haven't been able to put the books down and are " chain" reading them.
This is book number 4 in this series, and it was an outstanding read. If you have not read the 1st three, please go back to them and read. You will not be disappointed. Please support the writers with positive comments.
I enjoyed this book and series immensely! The cohesion of this group with the extended sections was really well done. I would recommend all of the books to anyone looking for a post apocalypse story.
