Carnage slashes his way into his own Epic Collection! When the offspring of Eddie Brock's alien symbiote bonds with Brock's psychopathic former cellmate, Cletus Kasady, the result is the most deranged and bloodthirsty foe Spider-Man has ever faced! Against the remorseless killer that is Carnage, Spidey must do the unthinkable and forge an alliance with Venom! But Carnage soon gathers some fiendish friends of his own: Carrion, Demogoblin, Shriek and the evil six-armed Spider-Man Doppelganger! And now a small army of heroes - including Spidey, Captain America, Iron Fist, Black Cat, Cloak and Dagger, Morbius and Venom - must hit the streets in a desperate bid to stop Maximum Carnage!
Collects Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #361-363, 378-380; Web of Spider-Man (1985) #101-103; Spider-Man (1990) #35-37; Spectacular Spider-Man (1976) #201-203; material from Spider-Man Unlimited (1993) #1-2, Amazing Spider-Man Annual (1964) #28.
This is a fun collection, but it is a bit bloated. I know they were trying to run this through 4 Spiderman titles and introduce a 5th with Spiderman Unlimited, but they needed to cut it by 2-3 issues - a little less Web of Spiderman and Spiderman would have been nice. The art overall is great, especially the stuff Bagley & Buscema, and the storytelling is solid enough.
Of course with a big crossover event, you need guest stars and this collection is full of Spiderman staples: Black Cat, Venom, Cloak & Dagger, Morbius, Iron Fist, and Captain America. And to balance all the heroes, Carnage gets Carrion, Demogoblin, Shriek, and the evil six-armed Spider-Man Doppelganger.
Get ready for a dark journey as Spiderman has to decide just how far he is willing to go to defeat a monster with no conscious.
Talk about a ride down nostalgia road. Picked up this Epic for the Maximum Carnage arc and I somewhat remember it from when I was a kid. As soon as I started reading it, the memories started flowing back and I was a tween again sitting reading single issue comics in my bedroom! Love this story line, and it still holds up pretty well even 30 years later!
Ok. The first three issues here were 5-stars and worth the slog that is Maximum Carnage.
Carnage's origin was awesome and seeing his unhinged use of the symbiote to kill was pretty awesome. Easily Spider-Man's most dangerous villain from a purely physical standpoint. Seeing Spider-Man and Venom team up and working together to fight Carnage was pretty cool, especially when they both dive off a building mid-fight to save a baby. Fun, short, and intense story with some great main characters and antagonists.
Then we have Maximum Carnage. All the complaints I make about 90s comics can be found here. Dated dialogue, new (at the time) and since forgotten characters who tried to be extra edgy whilst rocking punk rock attire, and stories going on for way too long. The stakes were great. Spider-Man teaming up with an ensemble to fight the villain team was pretty nice, except both sides fought at least of 14 times! The same story beats were hit so many times, by the time everything paid off, it was probably more satisfying than it should have been. Luckily, I loved the message of the story and Spider-Man's relationship with Venom developing further. Carnage and Shriek had a great relationship too (in a villain sort of way), but the rest of the villains felt very forced into the narrative. In fact, many of the heroes did too...
In short, Carnage's origin was awesome. 5/5. But Maximum Carnage could have been trimmed quite a bit.
I dont know if this counts as one book cuz its a bunch of comics but im counting it as a book. Marvel may try to make a movie that does these comics justice and they will fail. Miserably. Carnage is marvels masterpiece. It doesn’t get better than this, folks. Quite honestly i think even if you dont like comics or spiderman or marvel on the whole, this book is still good. You don’t even need to know anything else about the MCU to enjoy this. It is just such a beautiful piece of literature and I recommend it to literally anyone and everyone who has a brain and knows how to read. And its about MURDER! Thats fun! The art is so cool and everything about this book is awesome. So yeah. Thats me ranting about how much I love Carnage for twelve sentences.
Collecting AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (1963) #361-363 and #378-380, WEB OF SPIDER-MAN (1985) #101-103, SPIDER-MAN (1990) #35-37, SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN (1976) #201-203 and material from SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED (1993) #1-2 and AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL (1964) #28.
The origin of Carnage's story is good but they have to add Maximum Carnage even though it has its own epic collection. I hate it when they add Maximum Carnage as filler honestly I would recommend Carnage Classic.
Near complete double dip of amazing spider-man vol 25 epic collection, only issues 361 -363 & annual 28 are different but still an enjoyable 90s story.
